Sometimes shopping at the supermarket can be financially frustrating. However, if we focus and understand the options that we have to save, it doesnt have to be overwhelming. Lets consider these tips:

Check your pantry, refrigerator and surrounding areas to establish a list of items. One way to do this is by keeping close to your refrigerator, paper or a whiteboard where you can write down what you need. This way you buy what you need without exceeding and avoid impulsive buying. A weekly, biweekly or monthly food budget is a good choice. This allows you to handle cash efficiently and do an actual estimate of your charges. Be careful with the buy one get one free offers, they are not always feasible. Sometimes we consume one item and the other expires before consumption, resulting in loss of money. Evaluate expiration dates, the conditions of the item, quantity and unit cost. Opt for store brands, they are of good quality and many times at a reasonable price. Compare the prices of other brands of the same product and determine which is the best choice

for you and your pocket. Use discount coupons. Organize them by date and products, it will help when shopping.

Stay focused on your list. Remember that the purpose of the establishment is to sell; establishments organize products so that you buy thinking that Plan meals, this will help rotate and you need a particular item or that it is consume what is in your refrigerator absolutely necessary that you have it. and pantry. This will allow you to use your budget to vary food selections Do not underestimate the offers. depending on the available offers and Usually the products that the help you plan portions, making good establishment want you to buy is going use of your current resources. to be displayed at eye sight or at the reach of your hands. Visit the establishment in days and hours that are not very busy. Being at the supermarket for a long period will prompt you to select items that you do not really need at the time. Eat healthier and promote home cooked meals. This will encourage you to create family activities which in the end will result in extra savings.

Compare price of items in other locations. Sometimes creating two sets of shopping lists to compare price reductions is feasible, but selecting more than two establishments in the end is not necessarily a savings. Estimate whether time spent, effort, and fuel will outweigh the savings.

Remember that the end result of any Do not go to the grocery store hungry. food that is not consumed will result in This will generate anxiety and you will money in the trash; lets put back the end up buying everything you see, savings in our pocket. even without needing it.

Every day, clinical trials and studies are helping to find better ways to treat and prevent disease. But theres one problem: Latinos dont participate in health research as much as others do. And that means we dont know enough about the best ways to keep you healthy. Theres something you can do to change that: Consider participating in a clinical trial or study to improve treatments for diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. Ileana Roman

She was dressed with a friar tuck and tab collar. At a business fair and with much excitement, Missionary Ileana Roman, shared of her new ministry Guerreros de Luz (Warriors of Light). There was a table with flyers, folders, business cards and a team who was recruiting volunteers for their Summer Family Festival. Ileana Roman is from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico and is an educator by profession. She has a Bachelors degree in Special Education from the American University in Bayamon, PR. She also holds a Bachelors in Speech Therapy from the Carlos Albizu University in San Juan, PR. Prior to these studies, Ileana received an Associates degree in Dental Technology from Ramirez College in Hato Rey, PR. Ileana arrived to Rochester in 2001 when she accepted to work for the Rochester City School District (RCSD) as a Speech Therapist and later as a Special Ed teacher. During this time she recalls how challenging it was to adjust to a new country, a new language and without any family support. The first few weeks were particularly very difficult as Ileana had to leave her 2 children in Brooklyn while she looked for a place to stay, furnish her apartment and find transportation. She experienced firsthand what it was to be homeless and the trials and tribulation one has to endure during this period. Ileana only had $100 to get herself settled in the US; bread and water was literally all she could afford for about 2 weeks. Beginnings were tough but the sun would shine her way; her desire to succeed, overcome barriers and her strong faith in God were her motivation. To this day she is very grateful to her recruiter, Rebecca Torres-Linch who went beyond her means to assist her in getting a bed, sheets, blankets and the basic necessities of a home. Soon after, her children reunited with her. Ileana continued to adapt to a new culture and honed on new language skills. One of her personal learning tools was keeping a notebook close by where she would write English words and phrases that she did not fully understand. She would then plug them to the internet to find their meaning. She also met a Chilean teacher who became a good friend and ally and pushed her to the extreme so that

she could lose the fear of speaking E n g l i s h fluently. Elena Escos is now retired from the RCSD but was a great influence in the life of Ileana during her first years as a teacher in Rochester. As an e d u c a t o r, Ms. Roman says that in actuality it was she who learned from her students. Eventually, 5 years had gone by and Ileana was being recognized by her peers, students and parents for her strength in character and her relentless dedication. She loved her job teaching and learning, and has fond memories of her time at Freddie Thomas when she worked predominantly with African American high school seniors. She recalls how patient and helpful they were to her despite many sharing of their tough and challenging upbringing. Ironically, Ms. Roman was teaching a foreign class which in turn helped strengthened her skills -- English as a Second Language. While shes always loved teaching, she also loves reaching out to people. Perhaps because of her own experiences, she has a keen interest for the homeless and the destitute. A worker from a non-for-profit organization appreciated her heart for people and approached her one day. She was asked to consider working as a Residential Counselor. Before she knew it, Ileana accepted the opportunity and soon grew within the organization. She was promoted to Manager, then became a Supervisor and lastly worked as a Director of 5 programs before the position was closed due to budget cuts. Ileana has proven that she is a survivor and a hardworking human being. She currently works as an Inventory Associate where she travels to Albany and other bordering cities but it was during her tenure in the nonprofit organization where her love for people grew stronger and where her

All About Immigration:

Green Cards? Citizenship?
Los Centros de Cuido Diurno sufren debido a la disminucin de fondos
WASHINGTON (AP) This may be the year Congress decides what to do about the millions of immigrants living illegally in the U.S. After years of gridlock, there are ideas whizzing all around Washington. For now, all eyes are on an 844page Senate proposal with the yousaid-a-mouthful title of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013. Look for the Senate Judiciary Committee to take its first votes on the legislation on Thursday. Whats in that bill? Is there a Plan B? And who are all these immigrants, once you get past the big round numbers? A big dose of facts, figures and other information to help understand the current debate: Talk about comprehensive residents, and more than 11 million immigration reform generally are in the country without legal centers on four main questions: permission, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, a private research What to do about the 11 million- organization. plus immigrants who live in the U.S. without legal permission. The cards had been a variety of colors over the years. New green cards are good for 10 years for lawful permanent residents and two years for conditional residents.

THE A-WORD
Nothing stirs up a hornets nest like talk of amnesty for immigrants who are in the country illegally, although theres a lot of disagreement over how to define the term. A 2007 effort to overhaul the immigration system, led by Bush, failed in part because Republicans were dismayed that it included a process to give otherwise law-abiding immigrants who were in the country illegally a chance to become citizens. Critics complained that would be offering amnesty. All sides know its not practical to talk about sending 11 million-plus people back to their countries of origin. So one big challenge this time is finding an acceptable way to resolve the status of those who are in the country illegally. Backers of the Senate bill stress that those who are in the country illegally would have a longer and more difficult path to citizenship under their plan than would immigrants who followed all the rules. WHY NOW?
Major problems with U.S. immigration have been around for decades. President George W. Bush tried to change the system and failed. President Barack Obama promised to overhaul it in his first term but never did. In Obamas second term, hes making immigration a priority, and Republicans also appear ready to deal.

IS THERE A PLAN B?
And C and D.

WHERE TO?

Why the new commitment?

Obama won 71 percent of Hispanic voters in his 2012 re-election campaign, and he owes them. Last years election also sent a loud message to Republicans that they cant ignore this pivotal voting bloc.

Census figures show that between 1960 and 2010, immigration from Europe declined while the numbers coming from Latin America and Asia took off. As the immigrants points of origin changed, so did their destinations. Concentrations shifted from the Northeast and Midwest to the South and West.

BMI in Young Children

Growing up in a poor household and with parents that wanted to give my siblings and I everything they didnt have; we were taught not to let anything go to waste and this included food. My father, who growing up was extremely poor, would tell us to eat everything on our plate because we never knew where our next meal would come from. Therefore, I understand first hand the importance of teaching our young children healthy eating habits and how as adults we play a big part. physical activity and family history are other factors to consider.

He challenged public officials to be accountable to the peoplethe ones who elected them. One of the issues my dad challenged was the lack of a TRUE civilian review board in Rochester, one with teeth and real subpoena power. difference was that when I went over, by just 10 seconds, City Council President Lovely Warren ordered the time keeper to turn my microphone off. Lovely Warrens actions that evening solidified for me what I had already known for years -- that she and other elected officials, such as City Councilman Adam McFaddenanother minoritydo not care about citizens. In fact, many of them have completely sold out their own community and their own people, just like Adam McFadden did when he walked through Rochesters inner city, poverty stricken neighborhood, asking African-American families who are struggling just to eat, to vote for a millionaire mayor. Rochester City Council in 2007, and since being elected as City Council President in 2010. If elected as Mayor, Lovely Warren will be another Bill Johnson, who ran on his Blueprint for Change, promising voters the world, then completely selling out and betraying the very same people who put him in office. Its time for the Rochester community, especially African-Americans and Latinos to finally wake up and realize that your vote is precious! Your vote is power! Dont waste it on someone who really doesnt care about you. Theres a Spanish saying that goes, mejor conocido que por conocer, which basically translates to better someone one you know than someone one you dont. Personally, I wouldnt vote for Richards, or Warren, but I understand you may ask; ok so who should I vote for? Your choice may have to be the lesser of two evils. After all, at least with Richards, we already know what were getting: a white millionaire who doesnt care about minorities. Better than a black woman who feels the same way.

she was destroying us. Dr. Rosa Montero from Spain, who is a consultant for the CentralAmerican Psychiatric Association says: Please lets not add more pain with our prejudices, to the intense mental illness. Psychosis is a serious and chronic condition but if its well treated and well integrated into its surroundings, patients can practically live a normal life. The downside is that these circumstances, good treatment, good integration, occur infrequently, precisely because society rejects them because it degrades and prevents them from being human beings. Right away we call them crazy. In my opinion, the mass media is one of the most responsible for Latinos and immigrants to have many prejudices in this area. IMAGINANDO TU PROPIO LIBRO

Imagining your own book Translated by Steve Farrington

The Poem of the Butterflies

Todays story contains a lot of real situations. A while ago, my friend Oscar and I were talking about butterflies. I also have a friend whose name is Vera she is an artist who paints porcelain. Each year, Vera travels to different parts of the world to show her artwork. This year, she will go to Thailand! All of this is real; it is also real and true that I have no idea what she is painting now. Remember that when you imagine, things are neither good nor bad. Everything is possible in the world of imagination! The book that you are going to create today for your library will take us to the land of butterflies. But before imagining and creating your own book, remember that we have to do various things; for example, ask an older person to read this for you or to help you read it. When you finish, you will be the author of your unique and marvelous bookyour own book!

thing about the vase was what the monarch butterflies had done. They had written an invisible poem on the vase for their friends from Thailand. It had been many years since the butterflies had visited each other and they wanted their friends, the butterflies of Thailand, to know about their arrival. The poem of Eugenias magic vase said the following: In the paradise of your forests, in your hills of bamboo, tea and coffee, I will go to visit you, my friend. When the sun heats the mountains, And the fog has gone far away, The daytime butterflies will let us see each other.
