Sometimes shopping at the supermarket can be financially frustrating. However, if we focus and understand the options that we have to save, it doesnt have to be overwhelming. Lets consider these tips:
Check your pantry, refrigerator and surrounding areas to establish a list of items. One way to do this is by keeping close to your refrigerator, paper or a whiteboard where you can write down what you need. This way you buy what you need without exceeding and avoid impulsive buying. A weekly, biweekly or monthly food budget is a good choice. This allows you to handle cash efficiently and do an actual estimate of your charges. Be careful with the buy one get one free offers, they are not always feasible. Sometimes we consume one item and the other expires before consumption, resulting in loss of money. Evaluate expiration dates, the conditions of the item, quantity and unit cost. Opt for store brands, they are of good quality and many times at a reasonable price. Compare the prices of other brands of the same product and determine which is the best choice
for you and your pocket. Use discount coupons. Organize them by date and products, it will help when shopping.
Stay focused on your list. Visit the establishment in days and hours that are not very busy. Being at the supermarket for a long period will prompt you to select items that you do not really need at the time. Eat healthier and promote home cooked meals. This will encourage you to create family activities which in the end will result in extra savings.
Compare price of items in other locations. Sometimes creating two sets of shopping lists to compare price reductions is feasible, but selecting more than two establishments in the end is not necessarily a savings. Estimate whether time spent, effort, and fuel will outweigh the savings.

Every day, clinical trials and studies are helping to find better ways to treat and prevent disease. But theres one problem: Latinos dont participate in health research as much as others do. And that means we dont know enough about the best ways to keep you healthy. Ileana Roman
She was dressed with a friar tuck and tab collar. At a business fair and with much excitement, Missionary Ileana Roman, shared of her new ministry Guerreros de Luz (Warriors of Light). There was a table with flyers, folders, business cards and a team who was recruiting volunteers for their Summer Family Festival. Ileana Roman is from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico and is an educator by profession. She has a Bachelors degree in Special Education from the American University in Bayamon, PR. She also holds a Bachelors in Speech Therapy from the Carlos Albizu University in San Juan, PR. Prior to these studies, Ileana received an Associates degree in Dental Technology from Ramirez College in Hato Rey, PR. Ileana arrived to Rochester in 2001 when she accepted to work for the Rochester City School District (RCSD) as a Speech Therapist and later as a Special Ed teacher. During this time she recalls how challenging it was to adjust to a new country, a new language and without any family support. The first few weeks were particularly very difficult as Ileana had to leave her 2 children in Brooklyn while she looked for a place to stay, furnish her apartment and find transportation. She experienced firsthand what it was to be homeless and the trials and tribulation one has to endure during this period. Ileana only had $100 to get herself settled in the US; bread and water was literally all she could afford for about 2 weeks. Beginnings were tough but the sun would shine her way; her desire to succeed, overcome barriers and her strong faith in God were her motivation. To this day she is very grateful to her recruiter, Rebecca Torres-Linch who went beyond her means to assist her in getting a bed, sheets, blankets and the basic necessities of a home. Soon after, her children reunited with her. Ileana continued to adapt to a new culture and honed on new language skills. One of her personal learning tools was keeping a notebook close by where she would write English words and phrases that she did not fully understand. She would then plug them to the internet to find their meaning. She also met a Chilean teacher who became a good friend and ally and pushed her to the extreme so that
she could lose the fear of speaking E n g l i s h fluently. Elena Escos is now retired from the RCSD but was a great influence in the life of Ileana during her first years as a teacher in Rochester. As an e d u c a t o r, Ms. Roman says that in actuality it was she who learned from her students. Eventually, 5 years had gone by and Ileana was being recognized by her peers, students and parents for her strength in character and her relentless dedication. She loved her job teaching and learning, and has fond memories of her time at Freddie Thomas when she worked predominantly with African American high school seniors. She recalls how patient and helpful they were to her despite many sharing of their tough and challenging upbringing. Ironically, Ms. Roman was teaching a foreign class which in turn helped strengthened her skills -- English as a Second Language. While shes always loved teaching, she also loves reaching out to people. Perhaps because of her own experiences, she has a keen interest for the homeless and the destitute. A worker from a non-for-profit organization appreciated her heart for people and approached her one day. She was asked to consider working as a Residential Counselor. Before she knew it, Ileana accepted the opportunity and soon grew within the organization. She was promoted to Manager, then became a Supervisor and lastly worked as a Director of 5 programs before the position was closed due to budget cuts. Ileana has proven that she is a survivor and a hardworking human being. She currently works as an Inventory Associate where she travels to Albany and other bordering cities but it was during her tenure in the nonprofit organization where her love for people grew stronger and where her

THE A-WORD
Nothing stirs up a hornets nest like talk of amnesty for immigrants who are in the country illegally, although theres a lot of disagreement over how to define the term. A 2007 effort to overhaul the immigration system, led by Bush, failed in part because Republicans were dismayed that it included a process to give otherwise law-abiding immigrants who were in the country illegally a chance to become citizens. Critics complained that would be offering amnesty. All sides know its not practical to talk about sending 11 million-plus people back to their countries of origin. So one big challenge this time is finding an acceptable way to resolve the status of those who are in the country illegally. Backers of the Senate bill stress that those who are in the country illegally would have a longer and more difficult path to citizenship under their plan than would immigrants who followed all the rules. Sources: Pew Hispanic Center, Migration Policy Institute, Department of Homeland Security, Census Bureau, Government Accountability Office, Population Reference Bureau, Encyclopedia of Immigration.
WHY NOW?
Major problems with U.S. immigration have been around for decades. President George W. Bush tried to change the system and failed. President Barack Obama promised to overhaul it in his first term but never did. In Obamas second term, hes making immigration a priority, and Republicans also appear ready to deal.

It had been many years since the butterflies had visited each other and they wanted their friends, the butterflies of Thailand, to know about their arrival.
