The new teen wave is bigger, richer, better educated and healthier than any other in history. But there's a dark side too... Punks, Goths, Geeks, Dreads. They may sit at separate tables in the cafeteria, but they all belong to the same generation. In many ways, these teens are uniquely privileged. Theyve grown up in a period of relative prosperity. Cable and the Internet have given them access to an almost infinite amount of information. Most expect to go to college, and girls, in particular, have unprecedented opportunities; they'll be going into a professional world without barriers, where they can be anything they want, from sports professionals to politicians, with plenty of female roles to follow. But there is clearly another dimension to this picture, and it's far more troubling. In survey after survey, many kids even the best students - say they feel increasingly alone, unable to connect with their parents, teachers, and sometimes even classmates. They are desperate for guidance, and when they don't get what they need at home or in school, they adhere to cliques or immerse themselves in a universe out of their parents' reach, a world defined by computer games, TV and movies. Even the best, most caring parents can't protect their teenagers from all the problems, but involved parents can make an enormous difference. Kids do listen. Teenage drug use (which is still high) is slowly declining, and even teen pregnancy and birthrates are down slightly--largely because of improved education efforts, experts say. Many teens say they feel overwhelmed by pressure and responsibilities. Some have lived through their parents' divorce. Most live in households where both parents work outside the home and so they are at home by themselves after school. That unwanted solitude can extend well into the evening. Mealtime, for this generation, often begins with a touch of the microwave. Loneliness creates an emotional vacuum that is filled by an intense peer culture. "They spend a lot of time thinking about what others think of them," says psychologist David Elkin. "Dressing alike is, for example, a refuge, a way of hiding in the group." The pop-culture industry makes it harder than ever for adults to read their kids. But they must try. Ellen Galinsky has studied teenagers' views of parents and teachers. One boy told her how he had appreciated being told off by a teacher, when he was caught bullying a smaller boy. And a 16-year-old girl told her 'Im proud of the fact that my mother deals with me even though I try to push her away. She's still there." So pay attention now. The kids cannot wait.
