no suelen resultar tan llamativas.
Appreciating art. When we go to an exhibition, very rarely do we stop to think about all that complex
organizational network that is hidden behind it. Whose idea was it? How were they able to achieve this or that
piece? Who makes it possible for millions of people all over the world to be able to contemplate first hand the
same piece of art? Our curiosity has taken us to enter the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum behind the scenes.
There, all the departments involved in the organizing and placing in motion of an exhibition have guided us
through the hidden aspects of a fascinating job, a chain of tasks that are lengthy and complex. We have seen
how an exhibition is conceived, how the loaned items are negotiated, how the items are transported, revised
for their perfect conservation, how the exhibition rooms are prepared for their public showing… The logistics
are overwhelming. And in this particular case, the Head Curator of the museum, Guillermo Solana, calls our
attention to the true passion for art that a person who collects drawings must feel, a type of “less spectacular”
artistic work, he says, but very authentic for someone who truly appreciates art.
Appreciating art is precisely that; having passionate feelings also for artistic objects and manifestations that
are not usually so striking. Someone who feels passion for art always wants to go a little further. A legendary
movie-maker, Francis Ford Coppola did so, one his major concerns (as he explains in the interview published
by our magazine) having been getting over to the public propositions that surpass mere entertainment and
achieve the awakening of something really profound in the way we see the world. In his day, Gonzalo Torrente
Ballester did so, a universal writer who created one of the most moving stories in 20th century Spanish
literature: fifty years have passed since the first edition of his trilogy “The Joys and the Sorrows”, an
indispensable piece of writing for understanding why, despite all, we continue to be spurred on by ideals.
This time we complete our voyage through art and culture with a visit to a city that emanates art at each
step. Buenos Aires, capital of the tango, hides some emotion around each corner, a way of seeing life as
something to be celebrated at every instant, daily life made into art. Enjoy the journey.

B aron von Thyssen’s collection contains an important volume of work on paper by 20th
century maestros. One of my ideas when I planed the exhibition of The Abelló Collection
of Modern Drawings was to create a series in which tribute is paid and recollection made of
the names of people devoted to collections of drawings and works on paper and which are
usually far less spectacular, less obvious, amongst other reasons because they cannot be
permanently displayed in museums. This new series of exhibitions consists of bringing over every year, or every other year,
depending on the functioning of the projects we encounter, a large collection of drawings or, alternatively, a private collection – as
most probably will be the case – or a museum collection; but, above all, taking into account the private collector. The collector of
paintings is widely compensated: meaning that collecting paintings – important paintings –is very showy thing. On the contrary,
the collector who in addition to collecting paintings is also a collector of drawings, in my opinion reveals genuine passion.
What is more, the collector of drawings is more likely to be so by reason of a genuine passion than a collector of spectacular
paintings. Drawings provide less opportunity to be shown off; to begin with, they are not as spectacular as paintings and, in
addition, they are more fragile; they cannot be
continually exhibited, they cannot be sent everywhere.
“El coleccionista de dibujo siente In this kind of intimacy and apparent modesty of the

On the other hand, there has been little interest on

of drawings in Spain. For example, all the people who
one way or another had some relationship with painting, love drawing as the basis or
essence underlying artistic training. Anyone who has had any connection with the
arts is familiar with drawing and loves drawing. But the general public love the colour
and the large format and, of course, drawings cannot compete. It is one of those fields
in which one has to educate or accustom the public to see other things. It is all very
well to see paintings and, indeed, when we have exhibitions I like to emphasize the
spectacular, light-filled paintings but, in drawings there is a legacy, a western, artistic
tradition; the whole history of European art and the Renaissance can be understood
marvellously in drawings, sometimes even better than in painting.
Drawing is closer to the intimate feelings of the creator; drawing is where the
artist, at times, gives vent to his first ideas, his first intentions; those things not
entirely crystallized, when the drawing is then an area where artists think aloud and
reveal to us their secrets, their tricks... For all these reasons, I find it very interesting.
We are beginning with the Abelló collection, not all of it because the Abelló
collection is a vast art collection in which there are a considerable amount of old and
modern paintings and in which there is an important section of drawings. On this
occasion we have preferred to focus on more modern drawings, exhibiting all the 71
modern drawings that comprehend works ranging from a Goya drawing through
impressionists and living artists, such as Lucien Freud and contemporary artists like
Warhol.
There are larger works, smaller works, more brilliant works, more modest works
but the collection comprises an enormous variety and some very spectacular pieces
which include a pastel by Dégas that has never been exhibited. It is all of a jewel.

When the exhibit arrives at the museum, the unpacking process is undertaken in conjunction with the Security Department and
in the presence of a restorer or a courier, that is, a representative assigned by the loaner to supervise the processes involved in the transportation,
handling, technical review of the exhibit and its placement in the museum. The couriers are usually keepers and restorers from the museums from
which the exhibits are sent. In the reception hall, each piece is checked to certify that no alterations have taken place with the movement.
The day the Modern Masters of Drawing collection arrives, the hall is in good order and the works come down in a lift. The transportation company
staff, trained professionals wearing white gloves, carefully unpack each work of art, remove the special adhesives protecting the glass (in the event of a
breakage, the glass sticks to it without damaging the work), placing them on the supervision table where the restorer, a specialist in drawings in this
case, together with the courier prepare their report, which will allow them to pass through for the placement process. The museum has its own framing
workshop for repairing any slight, last minute imperfections. All this process is carried out in reverse order when the exhibition closes. If the exhibition
is extensive and works of art arrive from all parts of the world, there may be as many as sixty couriers, who are received by turn, and the unpacking
process may last as long as a week.

not only for publication purposes but to obtain more data to benefit their conservation. All
that happens on an exhibition site, such as the environmental conditions, are studied and taken
into account. This implies that every so often the works are revised and cleaned to eliminate
possible accumulation of fibres or dust brought in by the public visiting the museum and which
can become a breeding ground producing biochemical or biological alterations; at the same
time, advantage is taken to make a study of the composition of the materials that make up the
works, which is very valuable information as it gives us an indication as to the state of the
works and the conditions in which they should be exhibited.”
All this compendium of techniques is very valuable for the conservation of the museum’s
collection. In the Thyssen-Bornemisza, each Monday when the museum closes its doors to the
public, revision is made, one by one, of each of the works of art to detect any deterioration.
Sedano points out: “We also include information provided by other departments, such as
Security, regarding the behaviour of the public: if they tend to touch or come too close, which
are valid details for completing the studies. These cycles are constantly repeated in order to
keep the collection well supervised.”

Ballester at his library,

XX no alcanzan a comprender.

January 1999). It is one of the many qualifying adjectives that could be bestowed on one of the most relevant
Spanish writers of the 20th century who, despite having published several of his best works around the middle of
the century, did not receive due recognition until the eighties; at least, by the general public. Such recognition
came about, as could be expected in those days, thanks to television.
In December of 1957, Torrente Ballester published The Master Arrives, the first of the three parts of The Joys and
the Sorrows. That book passed with more pain than glory, something that nowadays, experts in 20th century
Spanish literature cannot quite understand. Perhaps it was because of the regional setting and ambiance or
because readers were scared off by its length (around 500 pages, depending on the edition), but be that as it may,
as Torrente Ballester himself acknowledged later in life that “barely 300 copies were sold from the date the book
was published until July, 1959”. As the friend that he had been for dozens of years, García de la Concha also recalls
the difficulties experienced by this writer to have the first volume of The Joys and the Sorrows published, during a
period when “the literary panorama was dominated by European objectiveness and social and political commitments
were a matter of concern”.
