HISTORIANS DO IT FOR OLD TIMES SAKE.
May 6 - June 21 Unit 6

Central Idea: Learning about our personal histories helps us discover who we are
For our new unit, Year One students will inquire into their personal histories and learn about being historians. Through experiential activities, we hope that students will come to some understanding of the process of finding out about the past, and gain knowledge about the changes that happen over time.

LINES OF INQUIRY *How we can nd out about history * How we know we have changed over time * Signicant events and milestones in our lives

KEY WORDS AND PHRASES: HISTORY/HISTORIANS ARTEFACTS MUSEUM SIGNIFICANT EVENTS

Collaboration between home and school is key for the success of this unit. We will need your time and effort to help students gather information and artifacts to help them know more about their personal histories. Please expect home learning related to our unit over the next few weeks. Thank you in advance for your help!!

We will read books about being historians and about changing over time.

LITERACY

KEY ACTIVITIES TO HELP STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE CENTRAL IDEA: Personal History Museum Students will bring something to school that represents a signicant event in their life, sort of like an 'artefact' from their past, to add to our personal history museum in the classroom. Having these artifacts will help us to begin to learn about our history and how we have different signicant events in our lives that give us a snapshots of our past. Signicant Events and Milestones Students will be asked to interview parents about specic stages and phases of their lives. We will be sending home interview sheets or questionnaires, and guidelines for discussion. Each time, there will be a focus on a particular d e ve l o p m e n t a l s t a g e ( e x . I n f a n c y, toddlerhood, schoolage). We might ask for photos and/or artefacts to accompany each developmental phase. The Day I was Born We will be talking about "The Day I was Born". We will be reading a book and then coming up with a list of interview questions that the students will bring home and ask you about the day they were born. Please have a hunt at home and try to nd a photo of the day your child was born. Students will interview parents about this and it would be great if you had a photo you could send in to school about the day that your child was born. Siblings Day We will ask families to bring in younger siblings for Year One students to observe. We hope that this activity will help them see and understand how human beings change as they grow older. Museum Visit (pending) We are looking into visiting a museum so that students can view a real museum where they can learn more about history and how history is documented and presented. *Home learning related to these activities will be emailed periodically throughout the next 6 weeks.
