1. . [Example from a dictionary] Probably I thought you could begin with TWO example from a dictionary analyzing the characteristics of the definition: that the characteristics chosen are the distinctive one for that object Transverse shear An external shear force at a cross section of a bema or other member subject to bending, equal to the algebraic sum of transverse forces on one side of the section Vertical shearing stress The shearing stress developed to prevent stress developed along a cross section of a beam to resist transverse shear, having a maximum value at the neutral axis and decreasing nonlinearly toward the outer faces. And then present definitions where they have to look for the main characteristics and the verbs used in definitions. What do you think?

A beam that covers the space between two piers or columns or between a pier or column and a wall is called an Architrave, or Epistyle. Above it, between the architrave and the cornice, there is generally a little strip of wall called the Frieze. Architrave, frieze, and cornice constitute the Entablature.

The activity or profession of determining the future physical arrangement and condition of a community, involving an appraisal of the current conditions, a forecast of future requirements, a plan of the fulfillment of these requirements, and proposals for legal financial, and constructional programs to implement the plan is called city planning, it is also known as town planning or urban planning.

Fiber glass is a very common insulating material, used in about 90% of new homes. Made largely of sand and recycled glass, quality fiber glass insulation is permanent and will not absorb moisture, deteriorate, or spawn mold and mildew. When placed within interior w all and ceiling cavities, its also an excellent acoustical product. Fiber glass insulation comes in many forms, including rolls and batts or the blow-in variety.

The word classic derives from the Latin and means of the highest class or rank. It referred to the superior tax-paying class of Roman citizens. However, within architectural history the term has been developed to take on several meanings. The term classical is often used to refer to the style of architecture that developed during antiquity [] Classical is also used as a label for buildings constructed in ancient Greece between c. 490 BC and 338 BC. The reason for calling the buildings of that period classical is that they are considered to have reached a peak of perfection, for this is the period when the Parthenon and the Erechtheum were built. The term classical in this case is being used as a label for particular period in Greek architecture and also implies a value judgment. Classicism is another related term. It is used to mean a revival or return to the principles of ancient Greek and Roman architecture [].

According to Le Corbusier, Architecture is the masterly, correct and magnificent play of masses seen in light. For him Architecture with a capital A was an emotional and aesthetic experience, but if we restrict our definition of architecture solely to those buildings that raise our spirits, then we would end up with rather a short list. According to which dictionary you use, architecture is defined as the art, or science, of building, or as one of the fine arts, that is to say it is concerned with the aesthetic arts as opposed to the useful or industrial arts such as engineering. [] The foremost critics and theorists of the day such as John Ruskin and William Morris contributed to the debate. Generally they agreed that the distinction between architecture and building could be summarised as: Building + Art = Architecture It is a definition that some people would still agree with today, but this dualism between art on the one hand and utility on the other is an unsatisfactory one. It does not tell us about the relationship between art and utility, and it omits our experience of the reality and meaning of architecture.

Language X is ... X is called ... X is known as ... X may be defined as ... X is a type of Y that/which ... A type of Y which ... is X
This is a chart I found about definitions [expressions used in definitions] probably its useful to adapt it to the verbs you have in the definitions. - Activity I imagined for the previous definitions: look for a definition of an object ... look for a definition about ...

Extended Activity: Objective: Ss have to match the definition with the corresponding term [in Spanish] [in this case we have to provide the equivalents in Spanish and more than needed] Then we can provide the equivalent in Spanish what do you think? This is for them to become aware the in the definition only the most distinctive qualities of an object are provided.

Verandah/veranda [galleria / veranda] Terrace [terraza] Hipped / Hip roof [techo a cuatro agues]

a large, open porch, usually roofed and partly enclosed, as by a railing, often extending across the front and sides of a house an open, often paved area connected to a house or building and serving as an outdoor living area. A roof that consists of four sloping planes that meet at the ridge (peak). The roof seems to sit on top of the supporting walls, creating a pyramid shape when viewed from the side.

(distractor) Gable roof = techo a dos aguas (distractor) Absortion =absorcin Adsorption = adsorcin The adhesion of a thin, condensed layer of gas, liquid, or dissolved substance to the surface of a solid, usually without any physical or chemical change in the material. Glare = A visual condition which results in discomfort, annoyance, interference with deslumbramiento visual efficiency, or eye fatigue because of the brightness of a portion of the field of view (lamps, luminaires, or other surfaces or windows that are markedly brighter than the rest of the field).
