SKILLS & INTERESTS

I have excellent communication skills, as shown by my work in journalism with various media publications. This work is done in my time when I am available and would not cause problems with any working hours. I am hard-working, able to work on my own or as part of a team and ready to take on any challenge handed to me. Whilst at Boston Grammar School, I played for various sports teams and participated in the school newspaper, the Grammar Gazette. I started to attend the newspaper when I was 13, and by the age of 15 I was made editor. More of my journalism work can be found on my website, which is listed at the top of this page.

UNIVERSITY

I am currently a Sports Journalism student at the University of Sunderland. As part of my course, I meet and interview people regularly. I am also very proficient on many social network sites, and all of this has enhanced my communication and people skills. My course also sees me writing and proofing work, so I am more than adept at checking and re-checking my work to make sure that it is perfect. Despite its obvious focus, my course is much more diverse than just studying sport, in that I have studied politics, news, newspaper production, law and many other topics.

WORK EXPERIENCE

To go into more detail on the experience outlined on page one, I have had two part-time jobs in the past, both of which involved constant customer interaction, till service and working as part of a team and individually. I worked at Sports Direct over a busy Christmas period, serving customers on the footwear section of the store. This involved constant interaction with customers, both looking to buy footwear and looking for help and advice where needed. The store closed down in February and I was only a temporary employee, meaning there were no opportunities for me elsewhere in the company once the store was shut. At Home, I mainly worked as part of the floor team, collecting and preparing glasses for service for the busiest bar of a five-bar nightclub. The occasions that I worked on the bar and my floor duties saw me dealing with problems ranging from helping customers who were sometimes vulnerable due to the amount of alcohol they had consumed, or solving more testing problems with customers. For instance, I quite often had to explain to irate, drunk customers that they were too drunk to be served which, in an environment where it is very difficult to talk to anyone due to the noise, was a challenge. But communicating with customers in constantly hectic, raucous surroundings was excellent practice for me to develop this skill. I have also had work experience at the sports desks of the Shields Gazette (May 2013) and the Lincolnshire Echo (March 2013 & summer 2013) where I have voluntarily contributed articles to the newspapers and their websites. My work at both newspapers saw me interview a variety of people from different sports as well as producing work to a deadline and to an expected high standard.
WEBSITES & MAGAZINES

In October 2012, I set up a hyperlocal website called Run Of The Millfield, which covered all news concerned with the Millfield suburb of Sunderland. In running the site, I had the chance to interview local councillors - including the Mayor of Sunderland - as well as key figures in political groups and local organisations. The site had a succesful run, gaining over 2,500 page views in around seven months. The website also had a Twitter page, which amassed a decent following of 50 followers and provided live updates on events such as protests over a mosque and a destructive fire on a take-away. I closed the site in May 2013 due to other commitments but the project allowed me to hone my reporting and key communication skills. Since March 2012, I have covered various sports teams for local sports website SportsByte and I am also a sub-editor for the site. In my time with SportsByte I have covered football, volleyball, handball, table tennis and hockey, and I have reported on events such as the Marathon of the North and international table tennis in Gateshead. My work with SportsByte lead me to apply for the position of Sports Editor of Spark Magazine. I was appointed as Sports Editor in July 2013. This role involves me commissioning content from a team of writers who I have to be in direct contact with, communicating with PRs and liasing with the SportsByte editor to create a bi-monthly magazine.
ACHIEVEMENTS

In May 2013 I won the Sports Portfolio award at the SportsByte Media Awards for a broad and diverse list of sports covered over the year. I was also among the finalists for the Reporter of the Year award. Between the ages of 11 and 15 I played football for my local team and school, and I also played cricket sporadically. In four seasons with my local football team, I won Most Improved Player and Managers Player of the Year and was known for being an excellent team player.
