Landwehr Infanterieregimenter as at August 1914 The Austrian Landwehr infantry was organised in 37 Landwehr infantry regiments and a further

three "Landesschtzen-Regimenter" which were trained as specialist mountain infantry regiments. Additionally Landwehr infantry regiments Nr.4 and Nr.27 were also trained for mountain duties. Landwehr infantry regiments generally had in peacetime 3 field battalions as opposed to the four in a common army regiment. Landesschtzen regiments I and III had however four battalions and Landwehr Infantry Regiments Nr.23 and 27 had two each. Two redesignations of regimental names took place in January and April 1917 respectively to reflect the valour of the Austrian Landwehr: The regiments were renamed as followed:
16 January 1917 11 April 1917 11 April 1917 Landesschtzen-Regimenter I-III Landwehr Infanterie-Regimenter Landwehr Infanterie-Regimenter 4 and 27 Kaiserschtzen-Regimenter I-III Schtzen-Regimenter Gebirgsschtzen-Regimenter 1-2

Unless otherwise noted the brigades and divisions in the table are those of the Austrian Landwehr. If a regiment was assigned to a common army brigade or division on mobilisation, then that division's title is given in the table.

Austrian Landwehr Higher Formations August 1914 Just prior to mobilization in August 1914 the Austrian Landwehr was organized territorially into nine Landwehr Districts with eight Infantry Troop Divisions and three independent Cavalry Brigades. The whole organization was under the control of the Austrian Ministry of Defence in Vienna whose Minister was General der Infanterie Friedrich Freiherr von Georgi. The senior officer of the Landwehr was the "Oberkommandant" a post held by General der Infanterie Archduke Friedrich. Tactically the Landwehr formations were placed under the control of the Commanding General of the Common Army Army Corps District within which they were recruited and stationed with the exception of the Ragusa based 16th Army Corps and to all intents and purposes became a third Infantry Division of the respective Army Corps. A Landwehr Group Headquarters was thus part of each of the Army District Headquarters in which a Landwehr Division was based. At mobilization some reorganization was effected and regiments assigned to other Brigade and Divisions including formations of the Common Army. These changes can be seen on the Landwehr Infantry Page. Commanders who changed at mobilization can be seen on the August 1914 OOB pages for Galicia and Serbia. The Hungarian Landwehr (Honvd) were authorized to form their own artillery regiments beginning in 1913. That year saw the establishment of regiments 1 and 8 each of five batteries and eight independent field artillery divisions. By the following spring this complement had been increased and reorganized into eight regiments and an independent horse artillery division. Regiments no. 1 and 4 7 had 4 batteries, regiments no. 2 and 3 had 3 batteries and regiment no. 8 had 5 batteries. On mobilization they were attached to the divisions as shown in the table below. Hungarian Landwehr (Honvd) Higher Formations August 1914

Originally formed in 1868 following the Ausgleich or compromise between Austria and Hungary, the Royal Hungarian Landwehr (Honvd) developed into a sizeable military force which by the outbreak of the First World War had it's own divisional organization including integral artillery. Just prior to mobilization in August 1914 the Hungarian Landwehr (Honvd) was organized territorially into six Landwehr Districts with an additional two Infantry Troop Divisions*, two Cavalry Divisions and 12 independent Infantry Brigades. The Brigades were formed into a further six Divisions on mobilization. The whole organization was under the control of the Hungarian Ministry of Defence whose Minister was Feldmarschalleutnant Samuel Freiherr von Hazai. The professional military head of the Honvd was the Landwehr Commander General der Kavallerie Franz Rohr with his Headquarters or k.u. Landwehroberkommando in Budapest. Each of the six Landwehr Districts was headed by a General Officer assisted in most cases by another General as a Deputy and a Field Officer as Chief of Staff. Originally numbering seven, the districts were reorganized in 1912 to mirror the six Common Army Corps Districts in Hungary. In Hungarian parlance the Landwehr district command was known as a "honvd kerleti parancsnoksg". It should be noted that General Officers within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy were liable to serve in any of the three separate armed forces and therefore it would not be true to state that an individual was a Landwehr or an Honvd General. Upon being promoted to Generalmajor, a former Oberst or ezredes (Colonel) from the Common Army or the Austrian or Hungarian Landwehr would be placed on the Common Army seniority list regardless of his prior service. The six District Commanders became the Divisional Commanders of the newly formed Divisions (Landwehr-Infanterietruppendivision) at mobilization:
