In summary, the site is a former landfill which sits on River Terrace Deposits which form a Secondary A Aquifer. At depth, the solid geology consists of the Mercia Mudstone which is designated as a Secondary B aquifer. The River Derwent flows immediately to the south and east of the site. A bentonite cut-off wall was constructed in the 1990s to prevent migration of contaminated groundwater from Pride Park into the River Derwent. It is reported that radioactive waste was deposited between 1961 and 1966, in trenches, in advance of the landfill waste fill front. The majority of the radioactive waste reportedly consisted of materials slightly contaminated with Uranium, emitting alpha radiation; a relatively non-penetrating form of radiation. The Geotechnical Engineering Desk Study reports that an investigation in 1993, undertaken by Sir Owen Williams & Partners failed to find any radioactive materials. It is understood that the recent ground investigation by GEL also failed to identify any radioactive materials.

types. However, the Contractor is free to propose any pile type but must provide full justification for the selection of his chosen option with the tender return. The Contractor will need to consider the impact of negative skin friction. The design and construction of the piles must take full account of all necessary measures to prevent pollution of controlled waters (refer to the Environment Agency guidance Piling and penetrative ground improvement, methods on land affected by contamination: a guidance on pollution prevention, National Groundwater and Contaminated land Centre Report NC/99/73, Dated 2001. The Contractor shall ensure that the pile design and construction fully complied with the requirements of the Local Planning Authority and the Planning Conditions, and provide method statements and works proposals as required to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of all stakeholders to the planning process. The Contractor shall provide a tender design with his tender return.
(e) Sequence of the works and other works proceeding at the same time
Refer to Main Contract documents.
Reference should also be made to drawings for other below ground items such as drainage and incoming services. The Piling General arrangement drawing is based on 450mm diameter piles with an indicative capacity (compression) of 750kN. The number of piles and sizes of pile caps shown are indicative and have been produced prior to receipt of ground investigation data. The quantum may change depending on the pile size and load capacity selected by the Contractor.

(x) Site Investigation including geotechnical and geoenvironmental information, and the need for further Site Investigation
The following Desk Study and ground investigation data is included in the main Contract Documents: Geotechnical Engineering Limited (GEL). Phase 1 Geo-Environmental Desk Study, Pride Park, Derby, for the proposed Outdoor Sports Hub (Multi-sports Arena). GEL Report No. 25759/01, dated 5 August 2011. Geotechnical Engineering Limited (GEL). Derby Multi-sports Arena, Factual Report on Ground Investigation.
The Contractor shall confirm in his Tender return that the site investigation information provided is adequate for his design and / or construction. If he is concerned about its adequacy, his tender should list his concerns and include proposals for any additional ground investigation.
(y) Disposal of excavated material and trimmed excess pile and wall material
1. Spoil generated from the site will require disposal in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act 1990, the Landfill (England and Wales) Regulations 2005 (as amended), the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005, the Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994 and any other relevant statutory instrument and guidance. 2. All material removed from site must be adequately described including reference to the appropriate codes in the European Waste Catalogue. Appropriate documentation shall be retained, and be available for inspection, that demonstrates the nature of the material to be disposed of including chemical analysis where appropriate. Copies of the relevant documentation may be requested by the Engineer 3. The Contractor is responsible for carrying out representative chemical analysis of the waste material before the material is removed from site if such analysis is necessary. The Contractor shall determine if existing information is adequate and representative and undertake additional analysis where appropriate. 4. The Contractor is responsible for registering the site with the Environment Agency as producing hazardous waste, where appropriate.

Amendment to Table B1.4: Table B1.4 is amended as follows: Plan position for piles/walls with cut-off level below commencing surface and constructed with a guide wall to be 25mm + 13.3mm for every 1m below cut-off level. Addition to B1.15 Supervision and control of the works: The Contractor shall provide a qualified full time supervising engineer competent in piling works of the nature of this contract. The supervising engineer will be responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the specification are satisfied during the works and will also be responsible for issuing the Engineer with piling records. The piling contractor shall not remove the supervising engineer from site without obtaining written permission from the Engineer. The CV of the supervising engineer shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval at least 14 days prior to commencing the Works.
