Theme: Spy Thrillers Real & Imagined

Weeks 1 & 3
Week 1: What? Codes, Code Makers, and Code Breakers
Learning Targets Students will: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text. Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics. Activity Notebook presentation about famous real spies (Benedict Arnold) and fictional spies (James Bond). Use Destiny resource list to show the variety of spy novels / informational text in the library. Ex. Alex Rider Series, Artemis Fowl Series, etc. Use book trailers. Lesson on how spies used codes and ciphers to communicate information, even today with mobile devices / technology. Students will develop their own code / cipher with a key and write a message. Their team will have to break the code. Materials Writing paper Websites / Tech Tools (All lesson websites will be linked on Destiny.) Week 3: Spy School

Week 4: Write Like An Egyptian

Booktalk Main informational texts: o Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs by Kathy Allen (eBook) o Hieroglyphs by Kremena Spengler Main fiction text o Uncovering Mummies: An Isabel Soto Archaeology Adventure by Agnieszka Biskup o The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan Lesson Review of Week 1 Lesson 4th Graders will watch The Kane Chronicles book trailer and view the book website Notebook presentation using eBooks on Egyptian writing: Hieroglyphics Ancient Egyptians would often write their names inside a cartouche, which is an oval or oblong shape. They believed the cartouche would protect the holder of the name from evil magic. The ancients believed that a cartouche hanging around their necks acted as a magic amulet to ward off injury or the evil eye.

Activity Students will create their own cartouche after viewing a model of a cartouche. 2nd and 4th graders will also write a story using hieroglyphics.
