East Bay Community Law Center Pro Bono Opportunities

The East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) provides free legal services to over 6,000 low-income residents of Alameda County annually. The community-based clinic for Berkeley Law (Boalt Hall), EBCLC trains nearly 100 students each year. Given our mission of Justice through Education and Advocacy, EBCLC is an ideal place for volunteer attorneys and legal professionals to contribute their time in the service of the community. EBCLC offers meaningful support for pro bono work that fits many interests, skills, and availability in our numerous projects. To the left is EBCLCs brief Pro Bono Menu that describes generally the practice areas, service opportunities, and time commitment. Following is more information about EBCLCs programs. Clean Slate Clinic (Community Re-entry) provides assistance to people seeking to clean up their criminal records to foster re-entry and reduce recidivism by helping clients overcome barriers to employment. Green-Collar Communities Clinic (Economic Development/ Transactional) provides comprehensive professional assistance to low-income workers and entrepreneurs to incubate cooperative and environmentally-sustainable small businesses. Health and Welfare Clinics offers multidisciplinary legal services to stabilize health and welfare: 1) an HIV/AIDS law project, 2) a Medical Legal Partnership (MLP) with Childrens Hospital and Research Center Oakland, 3) a middle school-based MLP, and 4) a direct service and policy advocacy welfare law project. Immigration Clinic works with individual clients and families to stabilize their immigration status in order to increase health and stability. Housing Clinic prevents homelessness, preserves affordable housing, and helps low-income tenants maintain decent affordable housing in this fast-paced, high-volume litigation practice. Neighborhood Justice Clinic (Consumer Law/Homeless Rights) provides self-help assistance to unrepresented litigants facing a range of legal issues, including consumer law and debt relief debt, homeless rights and citation defense, and general civil law. Youth Defender Clinic & Starting Over Strong Project represents youth at the intersection of the juvenile justice and education systems.
