Characteristics of productive interpersonal communication: Openness: willingness to share ideas and feelings and to disclose appropriately to others; listen carefully and to consider the ideas and feelings of others; reflect on effectiveness of communication and adapt it to be more productive Empathy: ability to understand and appreciate, involves feeling with someone rather than far someone Equality: view receiver as equals, respect, rights opportunity Supportiveness: individuals supportive of one another, encourage and help each other reach their personal and organizational goals Positiveness: needed to build productive relationships

Integrating = blend things together so that they function together as a whole Personal style = pattern of clear and consistent communication choices that reflect a persons individuality and distinguish him or her from other individualshow one relates to world and others around him/her 4 types of personal style:

Dominant: fast-paced and more task-oriented than people-oriented; blunt, critical, sarcastic, gives instructions for big picture, omits details, inspires others, does not hide accomplishments, not patient, ask questions for more detail, stick to business Influencing: friendly initiator of communication, spontaneous and humorous, positive and enthusiastic remarks, physically expressive with face, tone of voice, uses excuses liberally, influences and persuades others thru verbal praise, physical communicator, empathic, may not hear negatives, responsive, Steady: usually not the initiator of conversation or new ideas, likes stability of group, gives practical advice, always takes time to think things over, very faithful and loyal, will not attack, presents well-thought-out, logical responses, can be blunt, tends to think in terms of either/or rather than compromise, patient, empathic listener, prefers honesty and openness, tends to withhold evaluative feedback, has excellent insights, fairly reserved Conscientious: slow-paced and task-oriented, highly analytical perfectionists who love detail, becomes defensive when threatened, exact about details, feels quality is extremely important, asks many, many detailed questions to clarify other persons position, slow to respond because he or she must process all information, listens attentively and intuitively, sensitive to feelings of speaker, may miss the main point and get off on tangent, will take criticism or comments personally even if not aimed directly at person
