Warning: This instruction manual must be read and understood by all individuals responsible for the installation, operation, calibration and maintenance of the equipment. Warning: Electrochemical gas sensors are not designed or intended for on-line continuous gas analysis or operation in a constant (or near constant) background of gas. Such conditions of continuous or very frequent gas exposure will significantly reduce sensor life and require more frequent gas calibrations. Sensors operated under these or similar conditions are excluded from any warranty. Additionally, sensors operated under these conditions will require more frequent recharging (or replacement) to maintain gas sensitivity. It is recommended that spare sensors be maintained to reduce down-time under such conditions. Warning: Electrochemical gas sensors are not designed or intended for exposure to high concentrations of gas (in excess of full scale gas concentration). Depending on sensor type, the concentration, duration and frequency of exposure, gas sensitivity will be degraded. Sensors operated under these conditions are excluded from any warranty. Additionally, sensors operated under these conditions will require more frequent maintenance related to calibration and recharging (or replacement) to maintain gas sensitivity. Electrochemical sensors do NOT have an unlimited capacity to react gas and depending on levels and frequency of exposure, can become chemically saturated and therefore, unresponsive to gas. It is recommended that spare sensors be maintained to reduce down-time under such conditions.

Warning: Do not attempt to repair or modify instrument. If repair is needed, contact Mil-Ram Technology to obtain a Returned Material Authorization (RMA) number and further assistance.

WARNING: As is the case for all electronic circuit boards, the smarter Transmitter includes electronic components that can be damaged by static electricity. Circuit boards should only be handled when absolutely required and with power removed. Personnel should always wear a wrist strap connected to earth ground prior to handling any circuit board. This will discharge any stored energy. Hold circuit board by edges only. Do not touch either surface of board or any electrical components or circuit traces.

Warning: Electronic assemblies are sensitive to lightening damage. Always install proper lightening arrestor with the transmitter to reduce likelihood of damage in lightening prone areas. WARNING: Electromagnetic radiation can interfere with the normal operation and performance of the smarter Transmitter. Radio communications equipment, including hand-held radios (walkie-talkies) should be used at a safe distance from the Smarter Transmitter. Safe distances vary depending on radio frequency, power and environmental factors. Typically, a distance of at least 3 meters should be observed and increased accordingly, if any interference is observed. Electromagnetic radiation can damage electronic components. WARNING: Properly seal all junction box conduit entry fittings to exclude water and liquid from entering box. Water or liquids will damage circuit boards and require immediate replacement. WARNING: Although the smarter Transmitter incorporates a self-calibration feature, this feature is intended to supplement and NOT replace a regular calibration program using a certified gas sample of known concentration. Although the sensors are normally quite stable, it is generally recommended that calibration be performed monthly in the interest of safety. Unusually harsh or severe environments will require more frequent calibration checks. A routine program of field calibration will help determine if more or less frequent calibration and maintenance are required. This is the only method to accurately determine Instrument performance under the specific operating conditions and make appropriate adjustments to the maintenance schedule. Gas calibrations are the only absolute method of assessing Instrument/sensor performance. WARNING: The smarter Transmitter determines Remaining Sensor Life based on actual field calibration data, sensor life curve and specific electrical characteristics of the sensor. The remaining sensor life is an approximation and does not replace a regular calibration program using a certified gas sample of known concentration to validate sensor response. Near the end of sensor service life, the smarter Transmitter will indicate Replace Sensor. At that time, the sensor must be replaced with a new sensor and properly gas calibrated.

Declaration of Conformity FMEDA

The Model TA-2100 Gas Detection Transmitter was assessed by exida Consulting LLC regarding Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostics Analysis (FMEDA). A Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostics Analysis is one of the steps taken to achieve functional safety certification per IEC61508 of a device . From the FMEDA, failure rates and Safe Failure Fraction are determined. The Model TA-2100 is classified as a Type B device according to IEC 61508, having a hardware fault tolerance of 0. The analysis shows that the device has a Safe Failure Fraction between 90% and 99% and therefore, may be used up to SIL 2 as a single device based on hardware architectural constraints. Refer to FMEDA report for details.

I. Description The model TA-2100 smarter Transmitter provides remote detection of a specific toxic gas using Mil-Rams patented no false alarms electrochemical sensor technology. The transmitter features a standard 4-20mA output and RS-485 serial output (optional) utilizing Modbus RTU protocol. The model TA-2100 is available with a relay module (optional) in the same enclosure. The smarter transmitter operates on 15-30 VDC. Installation

WARNING: The transmitter LCD display/main circuit board assembly is sensitive to damage by static electricity. Always touch earth grounded junction box before handling/removing electronic circuit board assembly. When handling electronic assembly, hold circuit board by edges only. Do not touch either surface of circuit board. Do not touch electronic components or circuit traces on circuit board. Electronic assemblies are also sensitive to lightening damage. Always install proper lightening arrestor with the transmitter to reduce likelihood of damage in lightening prone areas. For further assistance, please contact Mil-Ram factory.

Sensor Installed at Junction Box

The sensor is provided with 3/4 NPT external threads opposite the sensing end of the device. The sensor screws into an explosion-proof junction box that houses the smarter electronics. The sensor/smarter electronics/junction box assembly constitutes the transmitter. Install transmitter as follows: 1. Unscrew cover (with glass window) from junction box.

2. Remove LCD display/main circuit board assembly by pulling up on face plate at two locations marked PULL (banana jacks secure the assembly in the junction box). Carefully lift assembly from junction box and disconnect relay ribbon cable connector (with relay module option only) from main circuit board. 3. Carefully guide sensor cable connector(s) through opening in bottom of junction box. Screw sensor into junction box hand tight. Attach Black sensor connector to bottom of main circuit board at connector marked SEN. Some sensor types will also include an additional white cable connector that attaches at circuit board connector marked AUX.

4. Attach relay ribbon cable (with relay module option only) to connector on bottom of main circuit board. 5. Install LCD display/main circuit board assembly in junction box by carefully aligning banana plugs on bottom of main circuit board with sockets in junction box. Gently push (directly above face-plate screws) until banana plugs seat fully in sockets.

6. Replace cover on junction box. 7. Mount junction box to a vertical surface with the sensor pointing downward.

Note: Transmitter junction box should be connected to earth ground using grounding lug provided inside of box. Proper grounding is required to ensure safe and proper operation of transmitter Note: It is generally recommended that the sensor be installed at a location as close as possible to the source of gas.

Transmitter Wiring The smarter transmitter can be connected as either a 3-wire or 4-wire 4-20mA device. A. When connecting the transmitter to a controller, PLC, etc. with a 3-wire input and local 24 VDC power supply, make connections as follows:

NOTE: The three wires must be isolated from other wires and should therefore be shielded or run in metal conduit to avoid electrical pick-up. If a shield is used it should run continuously from the controller electronics to the inside of the transmitter junction box. The shield should be terminated at the controller power common but left floating (do not attach to anything) inside the transmitter junction box to avoid ground loop interference. Apply electrical tape to exposed shield inside junction box B. Note: The use of a loop-powered isolator represents best engineering practices to avoid ground loop effects. However, an isolator may not be required if the voltage differential between PLC Power Common and Gas Detection Transmitter Power Common is not excessive.

VI.

Transmitter Operation The smarter transmitter provides four magnetic switches to configure the alarms (relay module optional) and calibrate the toxic sensor. The switches are activated using a magnet held directly over the switch outside the junction box glass window.

The switches are designated as follows: ENTER: A magnet switch used to enter and exit the alarm set-up routine as well as enter (accept) various set-up parameters. Alarm set points, non-latching/latching relay function, non-energized/energized relay operation, relay time delays, alarm on increasing/decreasing meter reading and relays on/off are configured in the set-up routine. The remaining sensor life (months) is displayed at the end of the set-up routine. UP: A magnetic switch used to increment alarm set points and relay time delays. Switch also used to display other set-up options. DOWN: A magnetic switch used to decrement alarm set points and relay time delays. Switch also used to display other set-up options. ALARM RESET: A magnetic switch used to manually reset latching relays. Latching relays can only be reset when the meter reading falls below the corresponding alarm set point. Also used to abort calibration mode.

Setup Routine The smarter toxic transmitter setup routines (standard and advanced) provide simplified configuration using magnetic switches in conjunction with the LCD display. No dip switches are used to configure the Model TA-2100. The standard setup routine includes the following: Analog Output Test: generate 4/8/12/16/20 mA output to verify readings and alarms at centralized control system (PLC, DCS, controller, host computer, etc.) Digital Filtering: provides increased stability in electrically noisy environments Alarm Set Point: select low, mid and high alarm set points for activating on-board relays (optional) Alarm Trigger: alarms can be triggered on increasing meter reading or decreasing meter reading Alarm Function: select non-latching or latching function for low, mid and high alarm relays Alarm State: select de-energized or energized state for low, mid and high alarm relays Alarm Delay: select 0-255 second time delay for low, mid and high alarm relays Remaining Sensor Life: expressed in months Last Gas Calibration: number of days since last field calibration 15 Minute Time Weighted Average: rolling 15 minute average value (meter readings) Peak Value: maximum value (meter reading)

The smarter toxic transmitter additionally provides an advanced setup mode for configuring the following parameters: Gas Type: select gas label from list of several dozen different compoundsused on LCD display

Decimal Point: select decimal point resolution .01 / .1 / 1 Range: select full-scale meter reading Units of Concentration: select ppm, ppb, %LEL or %Vol

Warning: Do not change advanced setup parameters without ensuring changes are compatible with transmitter electronics and sensor type. Contact factory to determine if proposed changes are permissible. Immediately after running the advanced setup mode, gas calibration of the sensor is required to ensure proper operation of the transmitter. Remove shorting clip at completion of advanced setup to avoid unauthorized or inadvertent entry into advanced mode. A. Standard Setup

The smarter toxic transmitter is available with an optional on-board relay module. If the relay module is installed, the following alarm set-up procedure is used to configure set points and relays (non-latching/latching, non-energized/energized, 0-255 sec. time delays). During normal operation, the transmitter will display appropriate alarm messages on the LCD related to low, mid or high alarm conditions. If the smarter toxic transmitter is provided without the relay module option, a jumper is factory installed on the main circuit board to similarly allow access to alarm set-up. In this case, however, set points are selected for the sole purpose of obtaining appropriate alarm messages on the LCD related to low, mid or high alarm conditions. In this configuration it is recommended that all alarms be configured non-latching, non-energized with 0 sec. time delay. This will ensure the alarm messages appear immediately and self-reset when readings drop below corresponding set points. To enter Standard Set-up mode, momentarily hold magnet directly over ENTER switch until LCD display shows the following message

B. Advanced Setup

The purpose of entering the advanced setup mode is to change factory installed parameters (gas type, decimal point, range, units of concentration) not accessible in the standard setup mode. Warning: Do not change advanced setup parameters without ensuring changes are compatible with transmitter electronics and sensor type. Contact factory to determine if proposed changes are permissible. Immediately after running the advanced setup mode, gas calibration of the sensor is required to ensure proper operation of the transmitter. Remove shorting clip at completion of advanced setup to avoid unauthorized or inadvertent entry into advanced mode. The Advanced Setup mode is entered by holding magnet directly over ENTER switch similar to entering Standard Setup mode. However, to access Advanced mode continue holding magnet over ENTER switch until LCD display shows ADV SETUP selection. VII. Alarm Trigger

The low, mid and high alarm relays can be configured to trigger on either an increasing or decreasing reading. For the purpose of general gas detection, most alarms for toxic and combustible gases are triggered on an increasing reading. In the case of oxygen detection, however, the low (and possibly mid) alarm is usually configured to trigger on a decreasing reading to provide alarm in the event of oxygen depletion. Other process applications, may also require an alarm trigger with a decreasing reading. Alarm function is as follows: Alarm on Increasing Reading: Alarm condition achieved when meter reading is greaterthan or equal-to alarm set point. Alarm on Decreasing Reading: Alarm condition is achieved when meter reading is lessthan or equal-to alarm set point.

Corrective Actions
The following fault conditions can generally be corrected in the field: EEprom Fault: stored data has been corrupted. Requires re-installation of configuration parameters. See Section VI, above.

Flow Fault: requires correction of pump flow rate to acceptable level. Ensure pump is operating normally and no restrictions exist at Inlet and Outlet side of pump. Sensor Disconnected: remove power from Transmitter and ensure proper sensor connection to main circuit board. Relays Disconnected: remove power from Transmitter and ensure proper ribbon cable connection to main circuit board. Bias Voltage: sensor voltage is out-of-range. Consult factory for further details. DAC Disconnected: signal wires are disconnected at Transmitter or measurement instrument. Ensure signal wires (4-20ma/Signal Common) are properly connected to measurement instrument.

Fatal Conditions
Generally speaking, ROM, RAM, +3VDC, -3VDC faults are non-recoverable. The RAM fault may possibly clear on recycling power. IX. Memory Diagnostics: Sensor Embedded Memory Chip The smarter toxic transmitter incorporates advanced memory check capability to ensure integrity of all stored parameters and values. In the event of memory corruption, the transmitter will acknowledge a memory error and automatically proceed to the advanced setup routine for re-configuration of stored values. Relay Module (optional) The relay module consists of a circuit board with four SPST (single pole-single throw) relays rated 10A @28VDC, 12A @ 120VAC, resistive. Terminal blocks provide access to Common (C), Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) relay contacts. The relays are fully programmable in the standard setup routine for non-latching/latching, deenergized/energized, trigger on increasing/decreasing reading and 0-255 sec. Time delay. The relays are designated as follows: Relay #1: Relay #2: Relay #3: Relay #4: Low Alarm Relay: Activated when the low alarm set point is reached and exceeded. Mid Alarm Relay: Activated when the mid alarm set point is reached and exceeded. High Alarm Relay: Activated when the high alarm set point is reached and exceeded. Trouble (fault) Relay: Activated when the transmitter looses power or sensor is disconnected.

The trouble (fault) relay is factory set energized and non-latching. The low, mid and high alarm relays can be configured in the field for non-latching/latching function, deenergized/energized operation, trigger on increasing/decreasing reading and 0-255 sec. time delay. (Refer to Section V, Operation).

XIII. Rain/Splash/RF Shield (Optional) A black anodized aluminum shield offers protection to the sensor from rain, splashing, radio frequency (RF) and mechanical shock. The upper portion of the housing is provided with internal and external 3/4 NPT threads. The external threads screw into the explosion-proof junction box which houses the remote amplifier. The sensor screws into the 3/4 NPT internal threads. The lower portion of the housing consists of a cylinder with bottom plate; the housing is perforated to allow gas entry. The cylinder is secured to the upper housing with four set screws. Install the shield as follows: 1. 2. Screw upper portion of housing into junction box. Carefully guide brown sensor cable connector through housing into junction box. Screw sensor into housing hand tight. Attach sensor connector to bottom of main circuit board at connector marked SENSOR. Seat the sensor connector fully to lock in place. Position lower portion of housing (cylinder) around sensor. Push upper edge of cylinder over upper housing. Tighten four set screws to secure cylinder.

XIV. SENSOR CALIBRATION NOTE: A routine program of calibration should be employed to ensure proper operation/performance of the sensor and system. Although the sensors are normally quite stable, it is generally recommended that calibration be performed monthly in the interest of safety. Sensor calibration is performed at the smarter transmitter using a gas sample of known concentration. To calibrate the sensor, follow the steps outlined below. NOTE: The sensors are factory calibrated with gas prior to delivery. Field calibrations must be performed with an appropriated gas sample of known concentration.

XV.

Off-Site Sensor Calibration The smarter transmitter toxic gas sensors include an EEprom encapsulated inside the sensor housing (except sensors on cables). The EEprom provides non-volatile storage of all set-up parameters (alarm set points, relay operation/function, etc.) and sensor calibration factors. Therefore, the sensors can be calibrated in the instrument shop (i.e. off-site) with Mil-Ram Remote Calibration Electronics (contact factory) and the sensors re-installed in the field without further calibration. Upon installing the sensors, the field installed transmitter electronics automatically up-loads the calibration data to properly configure the transmitter.

XVI. Self-Calibration The smarter transmitter provides unattended self-calibration features whereby every 30 days the micro-controller electronics increments the span calibration based on the typical life curve for the sensor type. When a field calibration is performed with a gas sample of known concentration, the life curve is re-extrapolated based on actual calibration data.

Note: The self-calibration feature is intended to supplement and not replace a regular calibration program using a certified gas sample of known concentration. Although the sensors are normally quite stable, it is generally recommended that calibration be performed monthly in the interest of safety. Unusually harsh or severe environments may require more frequent calibration checks. XVII. Remaining Sensor Life The smarter transmitter determines Remaining Sensor Life based on actual field calibration data, sensor life curve and specific electrical characteristics of the sensor. The remaining sensor life is an approximation and does not replace a regular calibration program using a certified gas sample of known concentration to validate sensor response. Near the end of sensor service life, the transmitter will indicate Replace Sensor. At that time the sensor must be replaced with a new sensor to ensure proper calibration.

1. Warranty- Seller warrants that this product will be free from mechanical defect or faulty workmanship for a period of twelve (12) months from date of shipment or one (1) year from installation, whichever occurs first, provided it is maintained and used in accordance with Seller's instructions and/or recommendations. This warranty does not apply to expendable or consumable parts whose normal life expectancy is less than one (1) year such as, but not limited to, nonrechargeable batteries, sensor elements, filter, lamps, fuses etc. The Seller shall be released from all obligations under this warranty in the event repairs or modifications are made by persons other than its own or authorized service personnel or if the warranty claim results from physical abuse or misuse of the product. No agent, employee or representative of the Seller has any authority to bind the Seller to any affirmation, representation or warranty concerning the goods sold under this contract. Seller makes no warranty concerning components or accessories not manufactured by the Seller, but will pass on to the Purchaser all warranties of manufacturers of such components.
