Sculpture of woman unveiled at ceremony
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Haddonfield Sun
Haddonfield is dipping its hand
further into the artistic scene
after a ceremony on June 8 pre-
sented a deformed naked woman
sculpture, it is the beginning of
Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture
Trusts endeavor to establish the
borough as the sculpture capital
of South Jersey.
The borough has added public
art to Mechanic Street by display-
ing 16 ceramic tiles along the
brick wall of the parking lot,
which leads to the Mechanic
Street Sculpture Garden.
According to HOST chair Stu-
art Harting, the non-profit orga-
nizations goal is not only to turn
Haddonfield into the first town in
the area to host multiple artistic
works, but to transform this
walkable, attractive and histori-
cally significant borough into a
significant center for juried out-
door sculpture in the great tradi-
tion of public art.
For one year, the garden will be
home to HOSTs first placement
statue, Uno by Miguel Antonio
Horn a sculpture graduate from
the Pennsylvania Academy of
Fine Arts. It took a few years for
Horn to complete the sculpture.
Originally I had a sketch of it
that turned into a bigger drawing.
That turned into a small model.
In the end, I think I built the en-
tire piece and the casting in about
a year, Horn said.
Uno is the first of a four-part
series that was inspired by a se-
ries of ornamental plaques. Horn
said he has yet to begin the last
sculpture.
According to Horn, the statue
was displayed at the Museum of
Contemporary Art in Mexico
City, Mexico, before coming back
to the states. It was also displayed
at the Brownsville Museum of
Fine Art in Texas.
It was awesome when Stewart
told me HOST wanted to display
this piece. I was really excited. I
actually just had it brought up
from Mexico, where it was for
two years, Horn said.
After a year, another ceremony
will be held honoring another
sculptors work.
HOSTs selection advisory
committee selected Uno for dis-
play and will decide on future
sculptures. The committee in-
cludes Robert Roesch, chair of
the Department of Sculpture at
the Pennsylvania Academy of
Fine Arts; artist and sculptor
KRISTINA SCALA/The Haddonfield Sun
Miguel Antonio Horn discussed his work and thanked the Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture Trust for
selecting his sculpture, Uno, for display at a ceremony on Saturday, June 8, at the Mechanic Street
Sculpture Garden.

BOE denied appeal
in case regarding
24/7 policy
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Haddonfield Sun
The Appellate Division denied
the Haddonfield Board of Educa-
tions appeal in a First Amend-
ment case filed against the dis-
trict in relation to its 24/7 policy,
which was revoked in February.
Earlier this month, the court
rejected the appeal since the
proper paperwork was not filed.
According to the school districts
attorney Joe Betley, there was a
disparity in the interpretation of
court rules.
We believe we did not have to
file the transcript because we
were appealing the decision of
the DOE commissioner, he said,
adding another appeal will be
filed.
According to Betley, the case
was originally transferred to an
administrative law judge who
agreed with a decision in
Ramapo in Bergen County, where
the commissioner felt its similar
policy needed to prove it actual-
ly created a material and sub-
stantial impact on the ability to
operate the schools.
The judge made a recommen-
dation to the DOE commissioner
regarding Haddonfields case.
The commissioner is able to ap-
prove, deny or alter the judges

I
f the only exposure you had to
New Jersey was what others said
or wrote about it, youd think it
was the worst place on the planet.
Scan the Internet just this week, and
youd find these stories:
Our governor called the authors of
a League of Municipalities report on
tax reform corrupt and labeled the
groups leader as a whiner.
A Little League coach in Newark
plead guilty in court to assaulting an
umpire because he wouldnt call a
game due to darkness.
A new report says that the Garden
State is the most expensive state to get
your car repaired.
A great white shark circled a boat
off the coast (not that this has much to
do with Jersey).
The greater public perception of
New Jersey is that it is a crowded, ex-
pensive state full of loud, obnoxious
people (thanks Real Housewives and
Jersey Shore) who think they are
better than everyone else (well, arent
we?). Our governor fits that mold per-
fectly, even as he is being mentioned as
a potential candidate for president of
the United States when the next elec-
tion comes around.
Heck, of the three professional
sports teams that are located in the
state, only one (the Devils) are
proud enough to label themselves
from New Jersey. The other two (the
Giants and Jets) act like theyre from
New York.
So why does anyone still live here?
Why are we doing this to ourselves?
Because, for those of us who live
here, who grew up here and are rais-
ing families here, we know the good-
ness that is here in New Jersey, even if
we recognize the bad. We love our
beaches, our mountains and our easy
access to major cities. We are proud of
our small, quaint towns, our history
and our top-notch schools, even if we
pay exorbitant prices to be here.
We are New Jersey, and well always
be New Jersey.
And we dont care what you think.
What are we still doing here?
With all the negativity about the state, why does anyone live in N.J.?
Your thoughts
Are you proud to be a New Jerseyan?
Let us know why you choose to call the
Garden State your home...and also what
youd like to see improve.

Mabel Kay Senior Center had
Start of Summer picnic
The Mabel Kay Senior Center con-
ducted its Start of Summer picnic on
Saturday, June 8.
It was a wonderful event with many
seniors enjoying the food and the compa-
ny.
However, the success of this picnic
was the middle school students who gave
of their time in true community spirit
and volunteered to serve our senior citi-
zens.
They did so with efficiency plus care
and a smile.
We at the MKH thank you so much.

director of senior services
Its uplifting to see history
portrayed in artistic way
Im so pleased and proud of our town
and the group that planned the area of
Mechanic Street and Haddon Avenue.
Its uplifting to see the historical refer-
ence portrayed in an artistic way, and the
addition of the sculpture is very impres-
sive.
Its a welcome addition to our well-
loved Haddy, and Im looking forward to
additional works.

UrbanPromise Ministries
hosts successful fundraiser
Suburban Promise, a Haddon-
field-based committee whose
focus is to support UrbanPromise
Ministries in Camden, hosted a
successful fundraiser on May 22
at the beautiful Haddonfield home
of Bruce and Cheryl Paparone.
More than 80 people attended to
celebrate the launch of Urban-
Promises Wellness Center, which
officially opened in September
2012. Co-chaired by Elizabeth
Mangino Wallace and Linda Giu-
dice, the event offered guests
ample food and drink, all donated
by local restaurants and wine
merchants. A joint venture with
First Presbyterian Church, Had-
donfield, UrbanPromises Well-
ness Center seeks to address the
impact of toxic stress on Camden
youth, providing the opportunity
for optimal wellbeing of body,
mind, and spirit. Children grow-
ing up in Camden are at extreme-
ly high risk for experiencing toxic
stress levels, which occur when a
child experiences intense and pro-
longed adversity that overwhelms
support structures and coping
mechanisms.
The Wellness Centers director,
Rebecca Hilgen Bryan a nurse
practitioner with more than 20
years of primary care experience
gave up her practice and teach-
ing position at the University of
Pennsylvania School of Nursing
to begin this venture at Urban-
Promise. The Wellness Center
seeks to address the impact of
trauma by increasing access to
trauma-informed counseling for
youth and families, empowering
staff and volunteers with knowl-
edge about the impact of toxic
stress and increasing resilience
among youth through peer leader-
ship opportunities Additionally a
17-bed garden has been built to
help UrbanPromise youth become
food smart, and a cadre of yoga
volunteers provide opportunities
to youth and staff to practice
mindful physical movement.
Volunteers are also welcome,
particularly those interested in
helping to maintain the garden
and offer cooking classes, as well
as health professionals willing to
offer individual or group therapy,
nutritional counseling, or yoga
and massage. More information

Wellness Center can be found at

munity outreach, participate in
federal stewardship programs
and carry out programs to en-
hance the environment.
The DEP has verified more
than 760 businesses and other en-
tities as implementing various
environmental stewardship prac-
tices. They include manufactur-
ers, chemical companies, phar-
maceutical companies, govern-
ment agencies, utilities authori-
ties, medical facilities and educa-
tional institutions.
The facilities are also assessed
on a variety of other factors, such
as having programs to reduce
emissions of greenhouse gases,
conserving energy and water, re-
ducing generation of hazardous
waste, encouraging green-build-
ing construction, requiring ven-
dors to utilize environmentally
friendly practices and encourag-
ing employees to car-pool and use
mass transit.
10 THE HADDONFIELD SUN JUNE 19-25, 2013
We are the only community in the area with four separate and
distinct neighborhoods that allow residents to participate in a
program specific to their cognitive ability. In fact, our innovative
approach focuses on meaning and purpose, enabling many of
our residents to achieve a higher level of functioning and
greater quality of life versus traditional programs.

Mayor: The hope is to bring
attention to downtown
Beth Wagner; HMHS art teacher
Allie Westerside; and Harting,
who is also a member of the bor-
oughs Planning Board.
Mayor Jeff Kasko said the
HOST initiative underwent dis-
cussion before the newly elected
commissioners took office. The
hopes were, and will continue to
be, to draw attention to Kings
Highway, Mechanic and Tanner
streets, and Kings Court.
I think that is a great thing for
our downtown. Its a great thing
for our town in general, Kasko
said.
Adding to the artistic atmos-
phere, 16 students were selected
from Westersides ceramic arts
class to display their work along
Mechanic Street. Westerside said
adding a piece of professional art
to the work of local students
draws attention to Haddonfield,
art history and community in-
volvement. Resident Sharon
Hooblers daughter, Meredith,
was one of the students selected
to display her ceramic tile, and
was at the ceremony admiring
Horns work as well as her daugh-
ters displayed tile.
I think Haddonfield is such a
destination town. I think more ac-
tivities, culture and visual things
around town would really enrich
the culture of Haddonfield, she
said, adding she is pleased to see
the commissioners supporting
the high school students, encour-
aging them to be involved in the
community and showcase their
artwork.

recommendation.
He said the commissioner
agreed with the judges recom-
mendation. The board of educa-
tion had to submit an appeal
through the state Appellate Divi-
sion. The Ramapo decision deals
with a different issue compared
to the constitutional rights case
that arose in Haddonfield.
The Ramapo policy dealt with
a broader spectrum, Betley said.
Our policy from the get-go
was only addressing drug and al-
cohol use, he said.
Enacted in 2006 and undergo-
ing revision in 2007, Haddon-
fields 24/7 policy invoked in-
school punishment for out-of-
school drug or alcohol miscon-
duct. Some parents felt the policy
violated students First Amend-
ment rights.
In December 2010, a family
filed a lawsuit against the
Haddonfield school district after
a juvenile faced charges for un-
derage drinking and was re-
moved from extracurricular ac-
tivities.
The family filed a second law-
suit in February 2010, after the
Camden County Superior Court
judge ruled it was improper to
declare a ruling in the courtroom
and the DOE commissioner
would be the proper authority to
make a judgment.
Plaintiff s attorney Matt Wolf
told The Sun this past February
that there are two cases still
pending in federal court.
Although the Haddonfield
school district revoked the policy
on its own in February, the battle
continues in court.
The allegations there are that
the 24/7 policy violated the con-
stitutional rights of the particu-
lar family as well as others,
Betley told The Sun in February.
According to superintendent
Rich Perry, the school district
still stands behind the standards
of the policy.
We felt that it did its job dur-
ing that time period to enhance
the culture of our high school,
Perry said.
According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
alcohol is responsible for more
than 4,700 deaths among under-
age youths per year in the U.S. As
of 2011, 22 percent of youths
binge drank, 8 percent drove
after drinking and 24 percent
were passengers of someone
under the influence.
Perry said the school board
still supports the policy, but in
light of the courts decision to
deem the policy inadequate, the
district had to revoke it.
Its a viable policy, howev-
ergiven the legality and land-
scape of the state in regard to the
Ramapo decision, the district had
to retract that policy, Perry said.
The school board plans to rein-
state the policy if it wins the ap-
peal, Betley said.
