GENERAL LIGHTING
A sconce is a type of light fixture affixed to a wall in such a way that it uses only the wall for support, and the light is usually directed upwards. It does not have a base on the ground. The word applies both to traditional forms of torch lighting, but also to modern gas and electric light sources affixed in the same way.
Cove lighting is a form of indirect lighting built into ledges, recesses, or valences in a ceiling or high on the walls of a room. It directs light up towards the ceiling and down adjacent walls.
A lamp is a replaceable component such as an incandescent light bulb, which is designed to produce light from electricity. These components usually have a base of ceramic, metal, glass or plastic, which makes an electrical connection in the socket of a light fixture.
The Inverted Pendant is a single or multi light fixture that hangs from the ceiling through a mono point power connection. It cast light upward rather than downward generating ambient lighting that contributes to a warm and inviting glow for your home.
A chandelier is a branched decorative ceiling-mounted light fixture with two or more arms bearing lights. Chandeliers are often ornate, containing dozens of lamps and complex arrays of glass or crystal prisms to illuminate a room with refracted light.
A Ceiling light, light fitting, or Luminaire is an electrical device used to create artificial light by use of an electric lamp. All light fixtures have a fixture body and a light socket to hold the lamp and allow for its replacement
Landscape lighting or garden lighting refers to the use of outdoor illumination of private gardens and public landscapes; for the enhancement and purposes of safety, nighttime aesthetics, accessibility, security, recreation and sports, and social and event uses.
Picture lighting creates the perfect scene for displaying paintings or photography, and makes ordinary pictures shine like works of art.
Lamps are the removable and replaceable part of a light fixture, which converts electrical energy into electromagnetic radiation.
Bathroom Lighting -- When you have a small bathroom, you need some decorating tricks to help visually expand the space. Make your tiny rooms feel bigger through effective lighting.
Cabinet Lighting -- Fixtures which are placed under a cabinet or room recess to provide task and accent lighting. They include slim, energy-efficient fluorescents, miniature track lighting and strips of low-voltage mini-lights.
Countertop Lighting Brighten up dark countertop spaces with an undercabinet light fixture.
A sconce is a type of light fixture affixed to a wall in such a way that it uses only the wall for support, and the light is usually directed upwards.

X. What is Monorail Lighting? Monorail lighting is getting more and more popular everyday because they offer several advantages over traditional track lighting systems. As of late, monorail systems have been appearing in more and more homes as businesses. With its customizable features, monorail lights have become a favorite of interior designers, lighting designers and architects alike. XI. What is Flexible Track Lighting?
Track lighting has come a long way. The days of heavy, non attractive, rigid track lighting system is a thing of the past. Now we have tracking systems which are flexible and curvy. Moreover these flexible track lighting systems are more convenient and malleable. Flexible track lighting systems come in different shapes and sizes. They are more bright and brilliant with different colors to blend or standout with the rest of the room. XII. What is Accent Lighting? Accent Lighting is lighting that emphasizes an area of or an object in a room. This lighting adds to the drama or style of a room by highlighting certain aspects of a room's decor. XIII. Modern Lighting Trends: Fixtures with Slim Lines
Many Americans are coming back into a state where they can afford to start spending money on other items, such as home updates. Light fixtures are a great option for updating a space while still being wary and cautious of overspending. Fortunately, lighting trends for 2012 feature a look that will be worth the money and last for several years, so you can enjoy without feeling guilty over any money youve spent
For 2012, look for light fixtures that feature clean, slim lines. Bases that consist of a single center rod on table lamps and floor lamps are a great example. You can find this basic style with a clean drum shade for a modern, updated look that will compliment a number 21
of decors. Plus, a variety of finishes, from brushed nickel hues to warm bronze hues, exist. This makes it incredibly easy to blend this style in with a variety of decor styles from contemporary to traditional.
Of course, slim lines dont have to be straight, either. The key look is slim, not straight, so keep this in mind as you browse light fixtures that will compliment your space and your style. This is especially true of fixtures such as table lamps or kitchen lights. Furthermore, ones definition of slim can vary from person to person. 2011 was all about large bulky glass blown lamps and other light fixtures, so by those standards, anything that is slimmer will be the right look for this style.
Another popular trend for 2012 will be the use of more fluid, organic lines. Fixtures that feature subtle curves are key and this particular look will easily compliment a variety of decor styles, so dont be afraid to stray from the straight and narrow path to a more fluid, organic look for your lamps and other light fixtures. 22
For pendant lights, look for clean looks: fluid, contemporary shapes with clean curves. You can opt for pendant lights that hang from a wire or pendant lights that feature a stem, as both of these types will easily blend in with this trend.
For shades, look for the drum shade shape which will continue to remain popular well into 2012 and beyond. The clean lines and curvy shape are complimented by a variety of colors and styles, so its impossible not to find the right shade for any given light fixture whether its lamps, ceiling fixtures or even chandeliers.
23
2012 is all about clean lines and organic, fluid curves. People feel safe investing in this style because no matter what their decor style may be, these lines always seem to blend in. So if youve got a traditional space or a modern space, a classic and romantic space or an eclectic space, the slim lines, organic shapes will work wonders. Plus, with a variety of finishes to choose from, youll find that finding the right light fixtures for your space is quick and easy, no matter what your style is. XIV. Plant Shelf Lighting Basics
Plant shelves are a great way to showcase your home dcor and other fantastic accessories that complete your living room, bedroom, kitchen and dining room designs. But without the right lighting, these up and away spaces can be as distant as the moon. Use this guide to using lighting fixtures for plant shelving and youll be sure to get the most out of your plant shelving spaces.
Ensuring that there is a way to get power to the site is the first and foremost part of this project. Without the right power supply, your plant shelf lighting fixture is a no go. Youll need to access the attic space above the plant shelving to determine if the space is reachable by conventional methods. Once you know that you have access to the site with a power supply, you can then insert an outlet box. Use an outlet box that is designed for drywall. These attach to the back of the drywall, allowing a quick and painless way to get your outlet secure. Once the outlet box is
24
ready, insert a wire into the box. Have another partner help you to pull the wire through the crawl space and over to an existing outlet or directly to the service panel.
25
Accent and task lighting can be used to complete avoid having to install a new lead wire and outlet. By using an existing nearby light source and installing a system of track lights, you can easily display plant shelving with ease. From colored spot lights to soft lights that strike the perfect balance between your design and your dcor, a track or monorail lighting system is the perfect choice for lighting a nearby plant shelf area.
XV.
Some of the most beautiful homes look their best at night, thanks to their evening landscape lighting. Many people are stumped as to how to achieve a similar look on their own home, especially when it comes to buying the right light fixtures and where to place them. Here are a few tips and tricks for night lighting a landscape. Work at Night
26
This is a great tip for those looking to save a bit of money and do their own outdoor night lighting on their landscaping. The best time to experiment with night time lighting is to turn on your outdoor lighting fixtures at night. You can even pre plan using flash lights to give yourself an idea of what the space might look like once youve installed the actual light fixtures. Remember the Different Effects
A professional lighting designer knows that even outdoor night lighting requires a number of different lighting types: accent, uplighting, downlighting, silhouetting, grazing, moonlighting and shadowing. You dont necessarily have to use all of these on a single home, but using multiple styles and light fixtures can help pack a punch on an otherwise bland night lighting scheme.
27
Accenting is used to highlight specific elements, such as a bird bath or a statue. Uplighting is when light fixtures are placed so that the light shines upward onto the item, whereas downlighting is the exact opposite: light fixtures are placed overhead to shine light downward. Silhouetting uses light fixtures placed behind an item so that when turned on, there is a silhouette. Shadowing is when multiple light fixtures are arranged so as to create a shadow onto a wall such as a fence or onto the home itself using a wall sconce. Finally, grazing is when light is used to show texture while moonlighting is a technique that creates a gentle glow similar to that of the moon. Considerations for Light Fixtures
28
When choosing light fixtures for your outdoor lighting scheme, know what you want to achieve before you purchase the actual fixtures. For example, if youre going to do a lot of silhouetting with your bushes, youll want to purchase light fixtures for exactly that purpose. Other questions to ask include: are your fixtures sturdy? Will they withstand the elements of your specific region? Are they U.L. wet listed or damp listed? Can you actually install the light fixtures yourself or will you need to hire the help of a professional? You may find that while you can plan everything and make all the purchases, actually installing the light fixtures, like wall lamps, may prove to be a bit more daunting than you had anticipated. It is better to be safe than sorry, so dont skimp on the help if you need it! Maintenance
Finally, consider maintenance for these fixtures. Light fixtures located on the ground will need to be monitored for debris build-up, as they can potentially catch fire if certain items, such as leaves or twigs, build up over top. You should routinely clean your fixtures, wipe off the dirt and debris from the shades to ensure that you are getting maximum light and the most bang for your buck. For wiring that is exposed, be sure to regularly check the wiring to ensure it has not become compromised or that the casing has not been worn away or chewed off by animals and other pests. Always make replacements immediately to avoid additional damage, such as a fire.

XVI. What are the Benefits of Entryway Lighting? The entryway of the home is perhaps one of the most important sections when it comes to lighting, especially for homeowners who entertain often. The entryway gives guests an idea of what to expect. If the entryway is warm and inviting with adequate lighting from the light fixtures, theyll feel comfortable walking up to the home. If its not inviting, well, that could be a problem. If youre not convinced your entryway may need some new outdoor lights, here are some of the many benefits to entryway lighting. Safety
One of the biggest benefits of installing adequate lighting fixtures on the entryway of the home is the safety it adds to the space. Outdoor lights ward off intruders because it is more difficult to break into a home that is well lit on the exterior than it is to break into a home that has no outdoor lights on at all. 30
This is especially true if you have a family, as you wouldnt want a burglar breaking in during the late night hours. Safety is important, whether you live alone or youve got a family. Warm and Inviting
Another huge benefit of outdoor lights around the entryway is that it gives the appearance of a warm and welcoming home. This is especially important around the holiday season, especially if you have plenty of guests during this time. A warm, inviting outside should also lead to a warm, inviting inside. So, dont forget to take a look at your interior lighting and update or add new light fixtures where needed. Lighting helps create a welcoming space. Landscaping
31
Starting with entryway lights is a perfect way to dive headfirst into adding additional landscape lighting and outdoor lights to your home. Landscape lights help highlight the different landscaping and architectural features of the home. These light fixtures allow you to set a scene and improve the evening look of your home.
You can install these outdoor lights behind bushes, in front of windows or around a flag pole to create visual interest in the space. You can also install them to point upward into trees to help highlight the tree and take it from looking flat to looking more dimensional in the dark. Interior Elegance Entryway lighting can also refer to the lighting just inside your home, in the entryway or foyer of the house. To light this space, you can use wall sconces, a chandelier or even a simple overhead ceiling light depending on the size of the space. Remember, you want the entryway of your home to be inviting both inside and out!
32
In short, entryway lighting can have a number of benefits. It can dramatically change the exterior of your home, making it warm and inviting. You should always carry this feeling inside and apply this to the light fixtures on the interior entryway as well.
XVII. What Is Daylighting and Is It An Option For My Home? Certain light fixtures are a necessity in the home. However, many homeowners are looking for ways to cut costs or just be greener and more eco-friendly while also reducing their electricity consumption. Daylighting is one option that could do it all: save money, reduce electricity consumption and allow the homeowner to be more eco-friendly; all without having to install additional or new light fixtures.
33
What Is Daylighting?
Daylighting is an environmentally friendly way of lighting a space using natural day light rather than a number of different light fixtures. It specifically brings indirect natural light into a large or small space, reducing the need for electrical ceiling fixtures or other sources of artificial light, such as lamps or track lights.
34
35
Light shelves are reflective surfaces that are placed along a wall on the interior of the building. Their goal is to reflect additional natural light upward around the building; thus producing additional natural light for the interior space in the same way that lamps and mirrors work together in the evening to produce additional artificial light into the space. Light reflectors work in a similar fashion, except they are installed outdoors and aimed in a way so that light is directed into the building rather than just being wasted. Meanwhile, sunscreens and sunshades work to control heat and glare while still maintaining maximum allowance of daylight into the space.
Daylighting should be combined with a combination or series of light fixtures to maintain an even amount of light throughout the entire day. A lighting professional can work with the homeowner (or perhaps, business owner) to create an electrical system in which artificial sources of light (lamps, track lights, ceiling fixtures and so forth) turn on and adjust throughout the day as the amount of daylight available changes. An electrical system can be especially beneficial during rainy, cloudy or dark wintery days when less natural light is readily available.
36
These electrical systems can even be programed to work on a timed schedule. For example, in the early hours of the day, more light fixtures may be in use and as the day goes on, the electrical system shuts these light fixtures off in favor of natural daylight. As noted earlier, some electrical systems are equipped with sensors and may be able to alter their timed schedule if the lighting is inadequate and additional lighting is needed.
Daylighting is a great way to save money and be eco-friendly, so its a great option for homeowners and business owners alike. It can also be easily taken advantage of during a remodel or even installed in an existing space for a modest cost.
