1. Hubble Space Telescope Turns 19 [Read Online]

The shuttle Atlantis is set to deliver hundreds of millions of dollars'
worth of belated birthday gifts next month.

Since the telescope's launch aboard the shuttle Discovery on April

24, 1990, Hubble has traveled 2.8 billion miles in space during more
than 100,000 orbits around the earth. More than 570,000 pictures have been taken of about 29,000
celestial objects. The data transmissions sent back from Hubble add up to almost 39 trillion bytes -
twice as much as all the data contained in all the books in the Library of Congress.

You can find these and other fun facts on the Space Telescope Science Institute's Hubble trivia page.
You'll also find a rundown of Hubble's top discoveries to date - including insights into the nature of
dark matter and dark energy, the speed-up of our expanding universe and the development of
galaxies, stars and planets.

Just in the past month, Hubble has delivered a new batch of beauties, including its 19th-anniversary
picture of a galactic "fountain of youth," a stunning view of an intergalactic smashup and a "People's
Choice" picture of a three-galaxy traffic jam.

And there's much more to come, thanks to the Atlantis mission now due for launch as early as May
11: If all goes as planned, two new and improved instruments will be installed, two more will be
fixed, and the telescope will be outfitted with new batteries and gyroscopes to keep it on track until
the 2013-2014 time frame. Source:

2. The iPhone’s Sweet Sixteen [Read Online]

The Home screen displays sixteen icons, each representing a different
application or function. Here is a brief descriptions here.
Starting at the top left, the applications on your Home screen are as
follows:
1. Text: The Text application lets you exchange text messages
with almost any other cell phone user. We’ve used a lot of mobile
phones in our day and this application is as good as it gets.
2. Calendar: No matter what calendar program you prefer on your
PC or Mac (as long as it’s iCal, Microsoft Entourage, or Microsoft Outlook), you can
synchronize events and alerts between your computer and your iPhone. Create an event on
one and it’s automatically synchronized with the other the next time they’re connected. Neat
stuff.
3. Photos: This application is the iPhone’s terrific photo manager. You can view pictures that
you take with the iPhone’s built-in camera or photos transferred from your computer. You can
zoom in or out, create slideshows, e-mail photos to friends, and much more. Other phones
may let you take pictures; the iPhone lets you enjoy them in many ways.
4. Camera: Use this application when you want to shoot a picture with the iPhone’s fine 2-
megapixel camera.
5. YouTube: This application lets you watch videos from the popular YouTube Web site. You
can search for a particular video or browse through thousands of offerings. It’s a great way to
waste a lot of time.
6. Stocks: If you follow the market, this application lets you monitor your favorite stocks, which
are updated in near real time.
7. Maps: This application is among our favorites. View street maps or satellite imagery of
locations around the globe, or ask for directions, traffic conditions, or even the location of a
nearby pizza joint. The only thing that would make it even better would be GPS.
8. Weather: This application monitors the six-day weather forecast for as many cities as you
like.
9. Clock: This program lets you see the current time in as many cities as you like, set one or
more alarms for yourself, and use your iPhone as a stopwatch or a countdown timer.

www.bench3.com Page 6
bench3 April 2009

10. Calculator: The Calculator application lets you perform addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division. Period.
11. Notes: This program lets you type notes while you’re out and about. You can send the notes
to yourself or anyone else through e-mail or just save them on your iPhone until you need
them.
12. Settings: Use this application to adjust your iPhone’s settings. If you’re a Mac user, think
System Preferences; if you’re a Windows person, think Control Panel.
13. Phone: Tap this application icon to use the iPhone as a phone. What a concept!
14. Mail: This application lets you send and receive e-mail with most POP3 and IMAP e-mail
systems.
15. Safari: Safari is your Web browser. If you’re a Mac user, you know that already; if you’re a
Windows user, think Internet Explorer on steroids.
16. iPod: Last but not least, this icon unleashes all the power of a video iPod right on your phone.

3. Reasons Why Your Google Page Rank Can Drop [Read Online]
There were few reasons why your sites page rank can drop.. dont
panic... Here is why.. and how you can overcome it!

• Loosing Your Fresh Content Bonus. When you first put a

piece of content online, it will often rank extremely well right out of
the gate. This happens because Google has a filter in their system
that gives a bonus to brand new content. You’ll notice that after a week or two, your ranking
can start to slide. This happens because the fresh content bonus goes away. A lot of people
panic when they find themselves in this situation. The solution is to promote the content well
so that plenty of other sites link to it. Even though you lose the fresh content bonus, you can
still rank well (even #1) if your piece of content has the most link strength of all the
documents that are related to the keyword in question.

www.bench3.com Page 7
bench3 April 2009

• Your internal link structure changes. This reason affects most bloggers, sometimes without
their knowledge. Think about it, when you first click publish, your blog creates a new page for
your post and also usually lists your post on your home page. Some blogs also link to their
newest posts, with a ‘Recent Posts’ section of the sidebar. This means that the home page of
the site is linking to the new post, and also means that each page of the site is linking to the
new post (if you’re using a ‘Recent Posts’ section). If you publish a bunch of new posts, that
will all change. The original post will fall off of the home page, and will drop out of the
‘Recent Posts’ section. When that happens, most of its link juice goes away and it won’t rank
as well as it originally did. The solution is to do a better job linking to the post from within
your site. ProBlogger has a great post about this concept: Interlink Your Old Blog Posts. If
you’re not a blogger the same concepts still apply. You need to pass more links from within
your site to your new piece of content.
• The link structure on sites that are linking to you changes. Let’s say that some solid blogs
like this post and decide to link to it - so they create some posts on their sites and link here. If
that happens, their posts will be on their home pages, at least until they’re pushed off. While
their posts are on their home pages, I will be getting more link juice than I will a month from
now. Here in a month they will have tons of new posts and the posts that linked to me won’t
be as strong as they originally were. This happens on a lot of different types of sites. Ezine
Articles is a site where you can submit a piece of content, in exchange for a link. When your
article is first published on Ezine, it will be displayed prominently on the site, in fact it’s often
linked to from the Ezine home page. As time goes on the article will fall deeper and deeper
into the site until it settles in as just any other page on the site. At that point it will be much
weaker than it was when it started out and therefore won’t pass as much link weight as it
originally did. The solution to this issue is to do a better job of promoting your piece of
content. You’ll need more links to replace what was lost. Multiple links from blogs, Ezine
Articles, and other sites can make up for the strength that’s gone.
• Duplicate content. I’ve had a few times where I’ve seen entire sites copied and put up on
another domain by a black hatter. In other cases I’ve seen single articles being stolen. This
isn’t usually a problem until the black hatter starts throwing tens of thousands of links at his
version of the original site or article. In some situations, Google doesn’t handle this well.
Usually the stronger site wins. If a black hatter is able to make a stronger version of your site

www.bench3.com Page 8
bench3 April 2009

or article because of black hat links, you may see a huge drop in your rankings. This is
because Google now believes that your site is the spam site.If you find yourself in this
situation, there are a lot of things that you can do. First of all, you can contact the site who
stole your content to let them know that you’re aware of their theft. You can also report them
as spam to Google - you can do this inside your Google Webmaster Tools account. Make sure
to tell them everything you know about what happened. Give them dates, if possible. That
alone will usually take care of the problem because Google can easily figure out who put up
the content first with a manual review. If it comes to it you can file a cease and desist order,
and in some cases a civil law suit. If you only have a single article that’s stolen from you, it
doesn’t usually affect your entire site. It will only affect that single article. You may have
bigger problems if your entire site gets ripped off. If a spammer steals your content and links
back to you, you usually won’t have any problem at all. Google uses links to determine the
original source of content. You’ll run into more of an issue if their version of your article
doesn’t link back to you.
• Your site becomes stale. Over time your competition may attract more and more links. They
may publish more and more content. If you fall behind them in these two areas, you’ll start to
lose momentum with Google. Google counts not only the overall link strength of your site, but
also the momentum you have for attracting new links. If you don’t attract any new links,
you’ll start to slip (assuming your competition is attracting new links). The obvious solution
here is to create new content and attract new links. Usually when this happens to me on a site
it only takes a few new links and a few new articles on the site. This of course will depend on
how competitive your keyword is.

4. Social Factors And Politics In India Got Precariously Mingled [Read Online]
India is the largest democracy in the world in terms of the number
of its voters. In most of the democratic countries, many factors
which are of national and international importance come to the fore
during the elections and the political parties seek votes from the
electorate on the basis of their ideas and stand on various such
issues. There are healthy debates and the people decide about the party or the candidate to be voted
on the basis of such debates and ideologies. Unfortunately, in India, though democracy has matured
considerably, yet the basis on which the elections are fought have nothing to do with issues or
ideologies.
• Though the Indian Constitution bars the caste system, yet even after more than six decades of
independence caste considerations remain among of the most important considerations in the
society, creating serious social problems.
• There are several so-called ‘secular’ and ‘non-secular’ political parties in the country. But
every party, at the time of selecting its candidates gives due consideration to the caste
composition of voters in every constituency. In other words, caste continues to play an
important role in selection of candidates as well as the perceived character of political parties.
• The serious mingling of the politics with caste has created a serious social problem and has
also resulted in persistence of castebased divide in the society.
“In India, the social factors and politics have got precariously mingled.”

5. How To Improve The Search Engine Ranking | SEO [Read Online]

You know all that extra time you have to work on Search Engine
Optimization? [A little sarcasm there] Actually, I tried to put
together a list of quick things you can do that will help you move a
little higher in your Google or Yahoo results.
1. Get listed in more search engines. There are tons of them out
there. There are also many free services that will help you get listed.
Or just set aside some time to get it done yourself. Here is a free search engine submission site that
will let you cycle through the top 100 search engines and get your site submitted.
2. Get listed in more directories. Again, there are a lot of them out there. Look for higher pagerank
directories. Improvingrank.com has some listed by pagerank. Look on the left side of the homepage.
3. Clean up your html and check your links. You want the bots to have smooth sailing through
your site. Use the tools on W3c.org and have a real person check them over too.
4. Get a few more links to your site. Make them relevant and at least the same pagerank as you.
5. Make your page filenames descriptive and keyword rich. Naming your page new_page_1.html is
wasting an opportunity to do some SEO. Use names that describe the content and keep the keywords
flowing.
6. Check your Title tags. You can use 90 - 100 characters in the title, so add some keywords. We
know Google looks at them, and so do many more search engines.
7. Check your ALT tags. Searchbots can’t see pictures. Make sure you have ALT tags on all of your
pictures, and make sure they are descriptive and keyword rich.
8. Rewrite your URL (anchor) tags. Good anchor tags (the text between the http: and /a tags)
reinforce the message and key words of your site.
9. Go post in a few forums and put your website in your signature. Forums are a great place to put
one way links. And you can help somebody out at the same time.
10. Put together a text based sitemap and put it on your site. There’s a lot of navigation that spiders
can’t understand, such as flash, forms, java and javascript. Putting together a text-based sitemap gives
the bots a way to navigate around the site.

Fifteen minutes every couple of days will make a huge difference in getting your rank higher.

6. How to Earn Extra Income | Earn Part Time [Read Online]
There are many little things i do to earn a little extra money each month
that require little effort, and can begin to really pay off if done en mass.
Most of them don't require any real effort and can be done in your
spare time with ease. A lot of people tend to forget these ways you can
make money, but they really are pretty simple.

Firstly if you look out into your yard you might see some grass, trees or
plants. What most people don't see however is a gold mine. There are
numerous ways to earn from the space that you have in your yard that are as easy as planting and
waiting. The easiest way is to plant some fruit trees. Getting quite a mixture is usually the best idea.
From here you have enough free fruit for all the family, as well as being able to sell the extra. Many
farmers markets and similar roadside outlets will let you sell your produce there once they have
sampled it. As well as selling the fruit as it is you can also bake fruit pies, and make preserves and
jelly from certain fruits as well.

www.bench3.com Page 12
bench3 April 2009

The same thing can be done with a simple vegetable patch. Things like corn, chili peppers and
potatoes are fairly easy to grow in most climates. These not only save you the money in not having to
buy them, but again you can sell the extra that you don't need. Growing uncommon things such as
herbs is also another good idea. Because these are sold in small quantities anyway, you will be able to
make more money as per the space that the plant requires.

While you're in the garden, its time to think about other peoples. Many people either cant be bothered
or don't have the time to keep their garden in good shape. If you are good at gardening then you can
work for people part time, a few hours per week to keep theirs looking tidy. Even simple things such
as hedge trimming or lawn mowing can generate a lot of interest and it can earn you a good amount
as well if you have a few houses to maintain.

Another thing many people underestimate is collecting cans and bottles for the return price paid for
them. If you get through a lot in your house then the money can really add up when taking them to be
recycled. Depending on where you are in the country you can collect sometimes as much as 10 cents
for every can or bottle brought back. This might not sound like a lot, but if you make a trip every few
months or so, you might have 500 cans and bottles by then. Thats $75 for basically making one trip to
the recycling plant.

If you have any hands on skills such as woodworking, or making jewelry then those can be put to
good use as well. Making things to sell and then either selling on ebay or using local ads or Craigslist
can be very effective. You can even set it so that the buyer will pick up the goods and pay cash as
well, which is obviously handy as it saves you a trip. But any skill such as this should be put to god
use. Some people are good with paintings or other craft making, and these can be very easy ways to
make money as well.

Helium of course is another source of income, albeit not a huge one at time or writing, and writing on
a diverse selection of subjects, and trying to write a few articles per day has helped the money begin
slowly growing into a steady trickle. Knowing what articles pay well is really the key to earning a lot
on helium i have found, and it seems to be niche interest or general popularity rather then being some
high brow financial or business related articles that have earned me the most money so far. Taking

www.bench3.com Page 13
bench3 April 2009

part in the competitions is another easy way to earn a few dollars here and there, because writing a
few articles for a competition will often put you in the $5 bracket at least and a lot of other writers
will read your articles when looking at what to write themselves and to judge the level that they need
to write to to be ranked highly.

There are also a number of other sites that are similar in make up to helium that pay you when people
view your articles as well, with varying degrees of payment and popularity in terms of how many
people will likely view your writing. There are some however such as associated content that will
only pay people in the United States so always check these sites thoroughly before you decide to join.
Some require exclusive content as well, so reposting your helium articles wont do for those either. A
lot of them tend to be review based rather then article based and don't tend to have formal titles to
work from, which can make it difficult to decide on what to write about. I can honestly say that so far
helium has been the best i have used, but i am still experimenting on this one.

Buying and selling a variety of things on Ebay is another great way to make money, and with a little
insider knowledge on particular subjects, bargains are fairly easy to find and make a profit on. I
personally tend to buy cheap dvds from my local stores that have a high average selling price, as well
as buying job lots of metal detector finds, which can usually be sold individually for profit. Obviously
this isn't something that can be done all the time because it does take time to find things that can be
sold on for profit, but browsing yard sales and the like can turn up a lot of items for very little money
that can be sold on for a lot more, particularly if you have a basic knowledge of things like antiques
and collectibles, and the seller doesn't, which happens a lot more then you might think.

Having car boot or yard sales can also be a good way to make money, as well as clear out clutter
which would otherwise be thrown out, and most people will be able to find a lot of old things that
they wont even remember that can be sold in their homes. It is always a fine balance of whether to
sell these types of items in yard sales or on ebay however, so i tend to check the prices of similar
items on ebay before i will take them to the yard sales, as with a lot of things you can get a lot more
on ebay.

www.bench3.com Page 14
bench3 April 2009

There are several sites that pay for posting, or through blog views using google adsense etc, such as
blogger or mylot.com. I have only recently started to experiment with these types of income, and like
many things the more time invested means more earned. I have recently heard of another similar site
which is payperpost.com, this is basically another paid to blog site, which i have heard can actually
make you decent money unlike a lot of other sites out there. Generally making money with blogs
tends to be quite difficult unless you intend to write on there a lot and are in a niche market rather
then being one among thousands of the more popular subjects, because there is bound to be someone
with better content than you out there if you choose a very mainstream topic as a basis.
Babysitting for friends or relatives is easy money as well, (why not get paid for sitting watching TV
that i was going to do anyway?)

Lastly being paid to take online surveys or read emails has been touted by some as an easy method to
make money, i have had no success so far with this type of thing, the few that do seem to pay per read
will only send emails very sporadically, and earning the threshold for a withdrawal, usually around
$25 takes a very long time, making it seem pointless to me. Surveys are similar, many sites will make
you take a qualifying survey to take part in any particular paying one, and no matter what answers are
given you will be found unsuitable and will have wasted your time.

Similarly there are a lot of sites that will offer points for signing up to offers and filling out forms that
can supposedly be redeemed for prizes later on. a lot of these sites will very rarely actually give you
the points you earn or will make it so that it will take you months to get even the most basic prize.
The only positive experience i have had with such sights is Ipoints.com, and although i haven't
redeemed my points yet i do already have enough for several dvds of my choice.

7. User Account Control In Windows Vista [Read Online]

Microsoft tried something new with user accounts in Windows Vista. In the past, the purpose of
having separate accounts was to make it easy for more than one person to use a single PC: each user
got his or her own desktop, documents, settings, and even a password to keep private things private.
But in Vista, user accounts also help your PC protect itself from...well, you.

User Account Control (UAC) is the name of the system that displays the “Windows needs your
permission to continue” message whenever you try to make a change to your system. On one hand,
having to watch the screen go black while you wait for the UAC prompt to appear every time you
open Device Manager can be tremendously annoying. On the other hand, the system is designed to
let you know whenever a change is being made to your system, which (in theory) makes it harder for
spyware and viruses to do their dirty work.

Otherwise, User Accounts are the primary means of protecting your data, even if you’re the only
person who uses your PC. The user accounts system allows you to encrypt your data, so it can’t be
read by someone who doesn’t know your password, and it makes it possible to securely share your
files with those on your network who do. And it means you can share your PC with your kids without
having to stare at their “Astronaut on a Surfboard” desktop wallpaper.

There are actually three different User Accounts dialogs in Windows Vista, each with a completely
different design and “intended audience,” so to speak. The problem is that each tool has a few options
not found in the other, so no single window can be used exclusively to handle all your tasks.
User Accounts The primary user accounts interface, found at
Control Panel ➝ User Accounts and shown in the Figure, is the one
that most users see. It’s large, friendly, and unfortunately, somewhat
cumbersome.

Some additional settings also can be changed only with the alternate User Accounts window, which,
incidentally, is identical to the sole User Accounts tool in Windows 2000. To open the old-style User
Accounts dialog, open the Start menu, type control userpasswords2 in the Search box, and click OK.

www.bench3.com Page 16
bench3 April 2009

Local Users and Groups

The third way to manage user accounts in Windows is to use the
Local Users and Groups policy editor, shown in the second figure;
open the Start menu, type lusrmgr.msc in the Search box, and press Enter. The Local Users and
Groups window (LUaG) is actually a Microsoft Management Console (mmc.exe) snap-in, like the
Disk Management utility and the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window, and therefore
can be accessed remotely if necessary.
Now, How to Control User Account Control?? we will see it later!

8. Recession In India Is A Psychological Phenomenon [Read Online]

The global economic meltdown has begun to show its effects in
India also. The growth rate of the economy, which was initially
expected to be around 7.5 per cent during 2008-09, is now expected
to be much less after being more than 9 per cent during the previous
year.

But at the same time, various sectors of the economy have been doing very well despite the global
slowdown. The capital markets are down and are not expected to do well in the next several months.
Rural economy, on the other hand, does not seem to be affected by the slowdown and continues to do
well. Many people feel that various economic indicators in the economy do not give ample evidence
of the recession in the country.
• There has been no economic crisis in the country and except for the plummeting of the stock
markets most sectors have shown good performance. It would be correct to say that the
recession in India is more in the mind.
• Over 60 per cent of Indian population lives in the villages and is dependent on agriculture and
allied activities. With huge sums of public expenditure being made by the government, the
economic activity in the rural areas is robust and there is no sign of slowdown in these areas.
• There has hardly been any unemployment in the country due to the domestic economic
operations going slow. It is only in the sectors like the BPOs, exportoriented sectors or other

www.bench3.com Page 17
bench3 April 2009

outsourced IT services sectors that the global effect of the slowdown has been experienced in
India. The very fact that the domestic sectors are doing well implies that the effect of
recession is largely in the mind in India.

Also we have to consider these points!

• The very fact that during 2008-09 actual growth rate in the country has come down by more
than two percentage points, the recession in India can no longer be termed as psychological
and is real and tangible.
• Jobs have been lost by lakhs of professionals in the country in the recent months and the
government for the first time has been forced to provide the unemployment dole to the
professionals who have lost their jobs due to the recession. This is official testimony of the
fact the global recession in India has taken its toll.
• The government of India has taken several economic policy measures in the recent months to
improve the liquidity position in the country. A few economic packages were announced
towards the beginning of 2009 and the interest rates were brought down with the aim of
increasing money supply in the economic system. There can be no better confirmation from
the government about the slowdown than this.
Shall we still consider that the "recession in India is still nothing but a psychological phenomenon."?

9. Hack the Windows Logo Key [Read Online]
What if your keyboard has no Winkey? Strictly speaking, you don’t
really need it, but there are a bunch of nifty keyboard shortcuts you
can only do with the Winkey, such as Winkey+D to show the
desktop, Winkey+R to run a program, and Winkey+Tab to use the
Flip 3D task switcher.
To give your keyboard a Winkey, or any other key it doesn’t have,
you need a keyboard remapping tool. Most tools use an obscure feature already built in to Windows,
such as

www.bench3.com Page 18
bench3 April 2009

• Sharpkeys (free, http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys/),

• KeyTweak (free, http://webpages.charter.net/krumsick/), and
• Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/software/mklc).
First, pick a key on your keyboard you don’t use the righthand Alt key is usually a good candidate for
the Windows Logo Key and remap it to the key you want Windows to think you pressed.

In SharpKeys, for instance, click Add, select Special: Right Alt from the Map this key list, select
Special: Left Windows from the To this key list, and click OK. Back in the main window, click Write
to Registry, and then log out and back in again for the change to take effect.
Of course, the Winkey isn’t for everyone. On most keyboards, it’s right next to the Space bar, which
means it’s easy to hit by accident. And since it’s one of the few keys that takes the focus away from
the active window, it can be decidedly inconvenient if you press it while you’re typing.

To disable Winkey, all you do is use one of the aforementioned keyboard remapping tools to remap
Winkey to something innocuous, like Ctrl or Pause/Break. Or, if you have the MyExpose task
switcher installed, you can remap the Winkey to activate MyExpose instead. While you’re at it, you
can likewise disable some other nuisance keys like Insert (Ins), so you’ll never again inadvertently
delete text as you type.

If you want to keep your Windows logo key, but you don’t like the Winkey hotkey combinations
(e.g., Winkey+R), you can turn those off with a quick Registry hack. Open the Registry Editor and
expand the branches to -
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ Explorer. Create
a new DWord value by selecting Edit ➝ New ➝ DWord Value (32-bit), and then name the new
value NoWinKeys. Double-click the new value, type 1 for its data, and click OK. You’ll need to log
out and then back in again for the change to take effect.

10. Indian Society Is Full Of Various Contradictions | About India [Read Online]
Most of the societies in the world have unique features and
characteristics. The societies in the South Asian countries are
agrarian in nature. With plethoPreviewra of languages spoken and
religions practised in India, it becomes a unique case of unity in
diversity.
Every such society becomes difficult to tackle administratively.
Indian society has had its own problem from time to time.
Economically as well as socially, the Indian society has wide variations.

There are various divides, including rural urban divide, rich and poor divide and the class divide. This
is why many people believe that the Indian society is full of contradictions.
(a) India has almost 250 million people living below the poverty line, which in absolute terms is the
largest number of such people in any country. But at the same time, the number of the billionaires in
the country is also on the rise. This is a great contradiction for any society.
(b) India is considered to be a tolerant society. Indian history is replete with the instances that would
vouch for this fact. But at the same time, we do experience the ghastly instances riots, blasts and
communal clashes every now and then. This is a glaring example of social contradictions.
(c) While majority of the Indian population lives in the rural areas, constituting almost 60 per cent of
the work force, the incomes in the rural areas have been the slowest to rise during the era of rapid
economic growth. This contradiction has made the large rural majority suffer despite the high growth
rate.
Also Consider This!
• All the societies in the world, including the most developed ones, have had certain
contradictions and the contradictions in Indian society are the extension of this global
phenomenon. There is nothing unique in the Indian society.
• No society in the world is absolutely equitable. Even the most developed societies like the US
have their own contradictions and divides. The erstwhile communist countries also could not
achieve completely equitable societies. Disparities and contradictions are the law of nature
and cannot be avoided in any modern society.

www.bench3.com Page 20
bench3 April 2009

The government has taken several steps to reduce the contradictions in Indian society. Several mega
schemes to uplift the people of the backward classes and backward areas to bring them at par with the
mainstream population are also being implemented.

11. iPhone’s Excellent Features [Read Online]
On the phone side, the iPhone synchronizes with the contacts and
calendars on your Mac or PC. It includes a full-featured QWERTY soft,
or virtual, keyboard, which makes typing text easier than ever before
for some folks.

Granted, the virtual keyboard takes a bit of time to get used to. But we
think that many of you will eventually be whizzing along at a much
faster pace than you thought possible on a mobile keyboard of this type.
The 2-megapixel digital camera is accompanied by a sophisticated photo management application, so
taking and managing digital photos is a pleasure rather than the nightmare it can be on other phones.
Plus, you can automatically synchronize iPhoto photos with the digital photo library on your Mac or
PC.
Finally (not really), one of our favorite phone accoutrements is visual voicemail. (Try saying that
three times fast.) This feature lets you see a list of voicemail messages and choose which ones to
listen to or delete without being forced to take in every message in your voice mailbox in sequential
order. Now that’s handy!
Those are merely a few of the iPhone’s excellent telephony features.

13. Facebook On iPhone [Read Online]

More and more very popular internet services are embracing the
iPhone with especially optimized versions. After Skype and
Netvibes, the latest Apple iPhone optimized portal was launched by
Facebook. Probably everyone knows what Facebook is by now —
it’s a very popular social interaction website that allows folks to
open their own profile pages, find new and communicate with old
friends, and more.
The newly launched iPhone optimized Facebook interface allows you to easily access four categries:
Home, Profile, Friends, and Inbox. This way you will be able to easily keep up with all the latest
communications and news feeds from your iPhone on the go.
What Is FaceBook?
Facebook is a free-access social networking website that is operated and privately owned by
Facebook, Inc. Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect
and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their

personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. The website's name refers to the paper facebooks
depicting members of a campus community that some US colleges and preparatory schools give to
incoming students, faculty, and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus.

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook with fellow computer science major students and his roommates
Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes while he was a student at Harvard University. Website
membership was initially limited to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the
Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It later expanded further to include any
university student, then high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over. The website
currently has more than 200 million active users worldwide.

14. Plus And Minuses Of Windows Vista | Love It or Hate It [Read Online]
Internally, Windows Vista refers to itself as Windows 6.0. When held up
against Windows 2000 (Windows 5.0) or XP (5.1), that means nothing
more than the fact that Microsoft considers Vista to be a major milestone,
and the basis for its operating systems for the next few years at least.

Windows Vista is like a papaya: sleek on the outside, but a big mess on
the inside.

Love it or hate it, Vista is what Microsoft is serving up right now. Whether it goes down smoothly or
gives you heartburn is up to you. On the plus side, Vista gives you a new, faster Search tool; the
shiny, translucent “Glass” interface; and a revamped Windows Explorer. It’s also the first version of
Windows where you can get Tablet PC and Media Center in the same package, which means you can
use it to build a DVR(Digital Video Recorder) without a keyboard. And Vista handles videos and

www.bench3.com Page 23
bench3 April 2009

pictures much better than earlier versions of Windows, with improved thumbnail and metadata
support built right into Windows Explorer.

As for the minuses, Vista seems intolerably slow compared with its predecessors, and its reliability
leaves something to be desired. The Green Ribbon of Death is an everyday occurrence, bringing
down Windows Explorer if you so much as bat your eyes at it. And the horrendously annoying User
Access Control (UAC) prompt forces you to endure repeated prompts for even the most mundane
tasks in Control Panel.
Fortunately, you can deal with most of the minuses...

15. The Fox And The Grapes | Moral Story [Read Online]
It was a sunny day and fox was walking across the fields. Soon he came to a
vineyard. As he came nearer, he could see some bunches of juicy grapes.
The fox looked carefully around him. He had to make sure that he was safe
from the hunters. He decided to steal some before anyone came along. He
jumped upwards but he could not reach the grapes. He jumped again as high
as he could. He still could not reach them. The grapes were just too high for
him! He was not ready to give up. He backed off, took some running steps
and leapt into the air towards the grapes. Again he failed to reach them.

It was getting dark, and he was getting angry. His legs hurt with all that running and jumping. At last
he stopped trying. As he walked away, he said to himself, “I don’t really want those grapes. I’m sure
they are too sour to eat.”
Sometimes when we cannot get what we want, we pretend that it is not worth having.

18. Windows Vista | Why Am I Annoyed? [Read Online]
Why do so many people find computers difficult to use? Over the
years, Microsoft has uncovered many startling facts about PC users
with this system, and the software has been changed accordingly. For
instance, people new to computers apparently have a hard time with
the concept of overlapping windows. (Did I say “startling”? I meant
“idiotic.”) So, Microsoft spent six years designing a “Glass” interface
for Windows Vista with translucent borders that sort of show stuff
underneath.

Of course, most people new to PCs figure out the concept of stacking windows after about 10 minutes
of fiddling, so is this actually a solution to a genuine usability problem, or just glitzy eye candy
included to give those still using XP a compelling reason to pgrade?

Here’s another one: lots of people seem to get lost searching through long menus for the tools they
need, so once again, Microsoft snapped into action. The team’s first attempt was “personalized
menus”—a feature found in earlier versions of Windows (including XP) and Microsoft Office—
which caused about half the items in a menu to vanish so nobody could find them. In Windows Vista,
Microsoft took a different tack and removed the menus altogether. The good news is that you’ll no
longer get lost looking through menus. Of course, you won’t be able to find anything, either.

Or take the fact that, for years, people have been complaining about the time it takes to load
Windows. Rather than making the operating system leaner and cleaner so that it starts faster,
Microsoft’s designers have continued to add features and complexity to the software, which results in
longer load times. The solution? Replace the Shut Down button in the Start menu with a Sleep button,
so once Windows starts, it’ll stay loaded in memory even when you shut it off. Thereafter, it’ll take
only a few seconds to get your desktop back. Truth be told, features like Sleep have been around for
years, but they’ve always sat on the sidelines, waiting for inquisitive people to discover them.

www.bench3.com Page 26
bench3 April 2009

But thanks to Vista, Sleep is now the main dish, which means Windows should start much faster
now—whether you’re the inquisitive type or not— and this should make a lot of people happy. The
downside, of course, is that it takes a constant supply of electricity to keep windows loaded in
memory, causing your PC to suck power 24 hours a day, 7 days a week...even when you’re not using
it. This means shorter-lasting laptop batteries, higher electricity bills, and more pollution from the
power plants that now have to power millions of sleeping Vista PCs.

What most people don’t know is that Sleep is actually a hybrid of the old Standby and Hibernate
power-saving modes, which means you can now completely power off your PC and still get it to load
quickly. Once again, only the inquisitive—you, presumably—will be in the know, leaving the masses
to leave their PCs on all night. Probably the most substantive change in Vista’s interface is the
prominence of the Search tool. Rather than being a separate window, it’s now permanently lodged in
the Start menu and at the top of every Explorer window. What’s more, Windows now invisibly
indexes most of your data, making search results more or less instantaneous (a feat possible in earlier
versions of Windows only with free add-on desktop search software).

Unfortunately, that speed comes at a cost—namely, that your searches may be out-of-date or
incomplete, and you won’t even know it. In some cases, you can search a folder full of JPEG images
for *.jpg and get absolutely nothing, or worse, a partial listing with no warning that it may be
incomplete. And when you do get the search results you want, there’s no telling whether or not your
favorite Details columns will be present since Vista seems incapable of saving your preferences from
one session to the next.

In short, the new Search feature shows promise, but its competence is limited by a company that
values marketable features over usable ones. Hundreds of design decisions are made this way. Take
content protection, Vista’s copy-protection initiative for so-called “premium content” like
highdefinition movies from Blu-Ray and HD DVD discs.
According to Microsoft’s standards, software and hardware manufacturers are supposed to disable
“premium content” across all interfaces that don’t provide copy protection. One such interface is the
S/PDIF digital audio port—usually in the form of a TOSl ink optical plug—that comes on most high-
end audio cards. Since S/PDIF doesn’t support copy protection—meaning that you could

www.bench3.com Page 27
bench3 April 2009

theoretically plug it into another PC and rip the soundtrack off an HD movie—Vista requires that
your TOSlink plug be disabled whenever you play back that HD movie on your PC. As a result,
you’ll only be able to use your analog audio outputs when watching HD content, and that expensive
sound card you just bought is now trash.

Why would Microsoft hobble an important feature? For you, the consumer? Of course not. Vista’s
contentprotection feature is intended to appease piracy-wary movie studios, so Microsoft won’t be
left behind as the home theater industry finds new ways to rake in cash. And ironically, Microsoft
boasts “content protection” as a feature of Vista.

Would Microsoft be making decisions like these if it had to compete fairly for your business? After
Europe’s second-highest court upheld a ruling that Microsoft had abused its market power and stifled
innovation, Neelie Kroes, the European Union competition commissioner, stated that “the court has
confirmed the commission’s view that consumers are suffering at the hands of Microsoft.” So that
leaves us lowly Vista users with a choice: do we continue to suffer with Windows’ shortcomings, or
take matters into our own hands?

Last month a TV program educated about the treatment of Blood
Sugar (Diabetes). Please note that the other name for "Ladies
Finger"(vegetable) is " OKRA "

Take two pieces of "Ladies Finger" and remove/cut both edges.

Also make a small cut in the middle and put these two pieces in a glass of water. Cover the glass and
keep it at room temperature for a whole night.

Early morning, before breakfast simply remove the two pieces of ladies finger from the glass and
drink that water. Keep doing it on daily basis. Within two weeks, you will see remarkable results in
reduction of your blood SUGAR level.

My friend has got rid of her diabetes. She was on Insulin for a few years, but after following this
every morning for a month, she has stopped Insulin but continues to take the "ladies finger"
treatment every day. But she chops the" ladies fiingers" into fine pieces in the night, adds water and
drinks it all up the next morning. Try it...! You have to keep taking it for a few days before you see
results, as most cases might be chronic.

21. Choosing Between Clean Install And Upgrading In Windows Vista

Microsoft suggests that anyone installing Vista on a PC that already
has a recent version of Windows on it should use the Upgrade
feature; that is, boot into the old Windows installation and start
Vista setup from within.

There are a few reasons you may want to do this:

www.bench3.com Page 29
bench3 April 2009

Preserve your programs. If you upgrade to Vista from within, you won’t have to reinstall all your
applications and their settings. Of course, most of your programs will need to be updated or
eventually reinstalled to work with Vista, but at least you won’t have to do it all at once.

Preserve your settings. Some of your custom file type associations and Windows Explorer settings
will be preserved during the upgrade, as will most of the settings (custom toolbars, etc.) in your
installed programs. Preserve your drive letters. If you have more than one hard disk (or morethan one
partition), the upgrade process preserves your drive letters.

Sure, you can reassign drive letters at any time, with the exception of the Windows drive. When you
do a “clean” install, setup insists on naming the Vista drive C:, regardless of the partition you choose
during setup.

Save time, sort of. It takes a lot less time, at least initially, to upgrade a previous version than to
install Vista “clean” and subsequently install and set up all your programs. Of course, down the road,
you’ll spend a lot more time troubleshooting your upgraded system than you would a fresh install.
And there’s also the fact that a freshly installed Vista will easily outperform an upgraded one.

It’s easier. Upgrading is easier, but again, only initially. As you can see, it’s not all lollipops and
rainbows.

Here’s why you may want to install fresh rather than upgrade a previous version.
Time for a little spring cleaning. How long have you been using that previous version of Windows?
If you got XP when it came out, you’ve amassed as much as six years of junk—drivers, software,
spyware, video codecs, and countless leftovers from software you don’t even use anymore—that will
continue to bog down Vista once you upgrade. If you take this opportunity to start anew, you’ll have
a leaner, faster PC when all is said and done, even if it does take more time to set up at the outset.

Be free of old hardware drivers. Even if Vista updates every hardware driver on your PC during an
upgrade installation, pieces of the old drivers and support software—not to mention Registry settings
from those old versions—will remain on your system and undoubtedly cause headaches down the

www.bench3.com Page 30
bench3 April 2009

road. Don’t be surprised if you can’t get your sound card—or any sound card, for that matter—to
work on an upgraded Vista installation.

It’s harder. OK, this may not seem like a selling point for a fresh install, but why back away from a
challenge? It’s not that much harder than upgrading.

Set up a dual-boot system. You’ll need to install fresh if you want to keep your old Windows
installation intact.
Before upgrading or installing fresh on a hard disk containing data, you’d be wise to back up the
entire system. But make sure the backup software you use—not to mention the backup device—will
also operate in Windows Vista so you can read the media after the install is complete; otherwise,
your backup will be worthless.

So, if you want to proceed to upgrade your old software, just pop in the Vista disc and start the setup
program.

22. Send And Receive MMS On Your iPhone | iPhone Tricks [Read Online]
You might already know it but when I read this trick over at iPhone
Central @ MacWorld, I thought of sharing it with you. One of the
features missing in the iPhone is it’s lack of integrated support for
MMS. If you were used to using MMS in your previous mobile
phone then it can be that much more painful. However, there is
some good news for you. You can make use iPhones built-in
support for email to work around this lack of functionality to send
and receive picture messages and importantly without the need of some nerdy iPhone hack.
www.bench3.com Page 31
bench3 April 2009

What is An iPhone?
The iPhone is an internet-connected multimedia smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc.
with a flush multi-touch screen and a minimal hardware interface. The device does not have a
physical keyboard, so a virtual keyboard is rendered on the touch screen instead. The iPhone
functions as a camera phone (including text messaging and visual voicemail), a portable media player
(equivalent to an iPod), and an Internet client (with email, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi
connectivity). The first-generation phone hardware was quad-band GSM with EDGE; the second
generation also adds UMTS with HSDPA.

Apple announced the iPhone on January 9, 2007. The announcement was preceded by rumors and
speculation that circulated for several months. The iPhone was initially introduced in the United
States on June 29, 2007, and has since been introduced worldwide. It was named Time magazine's
"Invention of the Year" in 2007. On July 11, 2008, the iPhone 3G was released. It supports faster 3G
data speeds and Assisted GPS. On March 17, 2009, Apple announced the iPhone firmware version
3.0, due to be released in mid 2009.

23. Indian Spy Satellite Can See Number Plates Of Cars [Read Online]
Indian spy satellite launched two days ago can see even number
plates of cars. This is a great achievement for a nation that has seen
terrorist attacks very frequently. By using the satellite fully India
may be able to foil attacks like Mumbai in future. RISAT-2 has
been developed by India’s premier space agency Indian Space
Research Organisation (ISRO) in collaboration with Israel. India had launched a similar Israeli
satellite last year to keep an eye on its Arab neighbors and Iran.

For ISRO and India the launch of RISAT-2 is a big achievement. ISRO had a very humble beginning.
It was in fact close ties with the Soviet Union in early seventies and eighties that enabled ISRO to

rapidly develop the Indian space program and advance nuclear power in India even after the first
nuclear test explosion by India on May 18, 1974 at Pokhran.

The prime objective of ISRO is to develop space technology and its application to various national
tasks. The Indian space program was driven by the vision of Dr Vikram Sarabhai, considered as the
father of Indian Space Programme.

to the next iPhone, because the second-generation iPhone is the
current iPhone 3G. In this way, should I be calling the next iPhone
the iPhone 4G. even if it doesn't have 4G connectivity? Whatever
you choose to call the next iPhone, I choose to call it pretty freaking hot. Forget about curves,
because it's hip to be square once again.

The concept shown below is obviously not an official announcement coming out of Cupertino, but it
easily falls within the line of reason for what Apple has been doing in the last year or so. With the
new unibody MacBooks, we're seeing renewed interest in even sleeker lines and aluminum bodies. In
this way, the iPhone 4G (or whatever you want to call it) could take on this design aesthetic as well.

As you can see here, the concept calls for lines that are definitely more square than the current model
and the black front has been replaced by the silky silver of aluminium sturdy titanium and glass.

In terms of the wish list for features, the designer calls for a bright OLED touchscreen display, 3G
data, true GPS, a secondary iChat camera mounted on the front, a removable battery, standard
headphone jack, 3.2 megapixel camera on the back with video, 32GB internal memory, and a
messaging light.

Some of these ideas, like the increased capacity and secondary camera, sound very feasible, but I

www.bench3.com Page 33
bench3 April 2009

wouldn't be at all surprised if Cupertino cast the removable battery aside yet once again. Hopefully,
cut and paste will be part of their plans though.

25. Blue Screen Of Death And Green Ribbon of Death On Windows [Read Online]
Take the Blue Screen of Death, a Windows mainstay for more than
a decade. Yes, it’s still alive and well in Vista, but now it has a
cousin: the Green Ribbon of Death. The Green Ribbon of Death
capable of bringing Windows Explorer to its knees comes from a
combination of poor design and bugs in its code.

And thus the reason for distinguishing where an annoyance becomes clear: you need to know what
you’re dealing with in order to fix it.The User Account Control (UAC) feature in Windows Vista is a
perfect example of a feature gone awry. Most of the time, UAC does precisely what it was designed
to do—prevent programs from doing harm to your PC, occasionally asking your permission when it
deems it appropriate to do so—but the result is a system that frequently bothers you with UAC
prompts, while intermittently breaking your applications without telling you why.
Because this behavior isn’t caused by a bug per se, fixing the
problem is instead just a matter of customizing the system so that it
suits your needs. This inevitably leads to an important conclusion:
one person’s annoyance is another’s feature. Although Microsoft
may be motivated more by profit than excellence, often leading to products designed for the lowest
common denominator, you’re not bound to that fate.

In other words, you should not be required to adjust the way you think in order to complete a task on
your computer; rather, you should learn how to adjust the computer to work in a way that makes
sense to you.

26. Do Your Boss Like You? | Management Story [Read Online]

It's a fine sunny day in the forest and a rabbit is sitting outside his
burrow, tippy-tapping on his typewriter. Along comes a fox, out for
a walk.
Fox: "What are you working on?"
Rabbit: "My thesis."
Fox: "Hmm... What is it about?"
Rabbit: "Oh, I'm writing about how rabbits eat foxes."
Fox: "That's ridiculous ! Any fool knows that rabbits don't eat foxes!"
Rabbit: "Come with me and I'll show you!" They both disappear into the rabbit's burrow. After few
minutes, gnawing on a fox bone, the rabbit returns to his typewriter and resumes typing. Soon a wolf
comes along and stops to watch the hardworking rabbit.
Wolf: "What's that you are writing?"
Rabbit: "I'm doing a thesis on how rabbits eat wolves."
Wolf: "you don't expect to get such rubbish published, do you?"
Rabbit: "No problem. Do you want to see why?" The rabbit and the wolf go into the burrow and
again the rabbit returns by himself, after a few minutes, and goes back to typing. Finally a bear comes
along and asks, "What are you doing?
Rabbit: "I'm doing a thesis on how rabbits eat bears."
Bear: "Well that's absurd ! "
Rabbit: "Come into my home and I'll show you"
Scene :
As they enter the burrow, the rabbit introduces the bear to the lion.
Moral:
It doesn't matter how silly your thesis topic is; what matters is whom you have as a supervisor.

Management Lesson In the context of the working world:

It doesn't matter how bad your performance is; what matters is whether your boss likes you or not.

28. Jobs Beyond Doom And Gloom [Read Online]

Challenges of Job Search and How to Avoid the Pitfalls

With the economy having entered into a downturn and key

industries slowing down, things are looking bad on the job front.
People are losing jobs and are fearful as to when the axe might fall
on them. Those who are graduating this year face bleak prospects as
many industries are not hiring. While some companies have resorted to pay freezes and even asked
their employees to take pay-cuts, others have starting terminating employees. Young people who are
finishing their education find that lucrative jobs that they had heard about, are no longer available.
What should one do in a crumbling job market? How does one survive? This feature describes the
realities of the job market in a declining economy and what should be done to avoid the pitfalls.

For more than one year, the economy has been on a downtrend. Now it is beginning to hurt: industrial
output is 5%, half of last year’s. Manufacturing is down 4% from 9.5% and exports are down more
than 12%. Industries are suffering. Even reputed companies have curtailed their plans of expansion.
The stock market has seen a steady decline. The free flow of capital and credit has run dry. It was
only a matter of time before the effects started showing up in job reductions. Industries are cutting
down operations across the board, from engineering to financial services. Estimates vary, but it seems
likely that more than 25 lakh jobs will be lost in India. Already, export-oriented units in textiles and
diamond polishing have reported widespread lay-offs. Executives in companies live in fear of being
sacked and many have already lost their jobs. Students graduating from engineering and business
management colleges across the country are finding that the promised dream job has vanished. Since
many have taken loans, the hardship of not finding a job and inability to pay the EMI has become
immense.

To survive, a graduate must take up any job in order to acquire skills that college degrees do not
provide...

29. The Role Of A Manager In An Organisation [Read Online]

A manager in an organisation is not always a leader. Management and
leadership are two different concepts, though often appear to overlap.
Modern organisations tend to be complex and operate in a global
business environment.

Therefore, there is renewed focus on the importance of management

and leadership and their distinctive roles in promoting and advancing
the interests of the organisation. Hard competition and continuous
pressures for change demand that managers and leaders work closely together for achieving business
goals.

On the practical level, a manager is called upon to evince the quality of leadership and a leader the
knack for managing difficult situations in their respective roles in any organisation. Pragmatically
speaking, then, the distinction between a manager and leader is not problematic. “A manager is often
portrayed as a procedural administrator/supervisor—an individual in an organisation with recognized
formal authority who plans, coordinates and implements the existing directions of the organisation
(Koontz et al, 1986).”

A leader, on the other hand, is defined as someone who occupies a position of influence within a
group that “extends beyond supervisory responsibility and formal authority” (Vecchio et al. 1994:
504) and is involved in devising new directions and leading followers “to attain group, organisational
and societal goals” (Avery 1990: 453). This distinction between the supervisory manager and
visionary leader has to be understood in terms of their respective tasks and functions. Dunsford, a
management guru, believes that management is concerned with ‘efficiency’—with tasks such as
coordinating resources and implementing policy, while leadership has to concern itself with
‘effectiveness’ of making decisions, setting directions and principles, formulating issues and
grappling with problems.

Katz (1974: 90-102), however, has identified three critical managerial skills and the last two happen
to be attributes of competent leadership. These are: technical skills (the ability to perform particular

www.bench3.com Page 38
bench3 April 2009

tasks or activities); interpersonal skills (the ability to work well with other people); and conceptual
skills (the ability to see the ‘big picture’). Modern leadership theory supports an integrated approach
to management and leadership. Early work on leadership identified the various styles of leadership
based on personal traits and behaviour of an effective leader, such as drive, desire to lead,
decisiveness, honesty and integrity, self-confidence, intelligence, job relevant knowledge (Kirkpatrick
and Locke 1991: 48-60). The behaviourist models focused on the relationship between a leader’s
actions and their impact on the attitudes and performance of employees.

These studies compared various styles of leadership, such as authoritarian and democratic styles.
They studied if an effective leader was more prone to efficient accomplishment of a task rather than
being inclined to the welfare of employees and subordinates. The ideal style, as proposed by Stogdill
in 1974, combined the best of both approaches. In later work we find considerations of leadership
theory as part of a wider approach to modern management.

The traditional distinctions between a manager and leader is disappearing. Modern business operates
in the midst of uncertainties as the current global slowdown and enveloping financial crisis show.
Accordingly, the role of a manager demands flexibility, dynamism, management skills as well as
leadership quality.

30. The Wolf And The Lamb | Moral Story [Read Online]
A lamb was grazing with a flock of sheep one day. She soon found
some sweet grass at the edge of the field. Farther and farther she
went, away from the others. She was enjoying herself so much that
she did not notice a wolf coming nearer to her. However, when it
pounced on her, she was quick to start pleading, “Please, please
don’t eat me yet. My stomach is full of grass. If you wait a while, I
will taste much better.”

The wolf thought that was a good idea, so he sat down and waited. After a while, the lamb said, “If

www.bench3.com Page 39
bench3 April 2009

you allow me to dance, the grass in my stomach will be digested faster.” Again the wolf agreed.
While the lamb was dancing, she had a new idea. She said, “Please take the bell from around my
neck. If you ring it as hard as you can, I will be able to dance even faster.” The wolf took the bell and
rang it as hard as he could. The shepherd heard the bell ringing and quickly sent his dogs to find the
missing lamb. The barking dogs frightened the wolf away and saved the lamb’s life.
The gentle and weak can sometimes be cleverer than fierce and strong.

31. Clothing Forbidden At German Hotel | Unusual Concept [Read Online]

A passionate German naturist has revealed his plan to open Germany's first hotel where clothes are
banned.
HOUSE RULES
• Access to the hotel is reserved exclusively to followers of the nudist movement
• By entering the hotel grounds, guests agree to comply with the binding house rules
• Guests are obliged to be naked inside the hotel precinct
• Sexual harassment will not be tolerated
• Sexual acts are strictly prohibited in the common areas
• Photography and filming are only allowed with permission of those photographed
Frieder Haferkorn, the entrepreneur behind the venture, says he is turning a conventional hotel in the
Black Forest into a haven for naturists.

According to the house rules, clothes are not only optional, but strictly forbidden at all times. In
keeping with naturists' belief that nudity is non-sexual, acts of a sexual nature are banned in common
areas.
The exact opening date has not yet been set, but Mr Haferkorn has already published the house rules
for the hotel he soon hopes to run.

Some, like the request to keep noise in the corridors to a minimum, would not raise an eyebrow
anywhere.

www.bench3.com Page 40
bench3 April 2009

Others are more unusual. Rule number one limits access to the hotel to followers of the nudist
movement. And rule number three demands that guests be naked at all times.

Hotel Rosengarten has until now been a destination for walkers taking advantage of its idyllic
location in Germany's Black Forest.

Mr Haferkorn plans to turn it into "a place of relaxation for people who live naturism and who want
to spend their leisure time playing sports and games, and mingling with like-minded people in
complete nudity."

He says the new Rosengarten will boast 32 rooms, a restaurant, a sauna and a tanning salon, for those
days when the German weather does not play ball. Mr Haferkorn hopes his hotel will attract both
walkers who like to go bare and nudists who like to walk. And while the strict nudity rule only
applies within the grounds of the hotel, guests keen to bare it all on their walks may not have to wait
too long for permission: two villages in the Harz mountain region are reportedly looking into
designating some of their walking paths as nudist routes.

Even without official permission, nudists have for over a century roamed naked through Germany's
forests. Nudist walkers freely advertise the dates of naked walks on the internet. If spotted, they are
sometimes fined by police, but in general, they say, clothed people's reaction is one of surprise, not
anger. The nudist movement, or free body culture as it is called in Germany, goes back to the 1890s,
when sociologist Heinrich Pudor wrote about stripping off and getting back to nature.

And many more Germans are believed to enjoy bathing, walking, playing and camping naked. Mr
Haferkorn is hoping to attract as many of them as possible to his new hotel, although he may have to
think hard about where his guests should pin their DFK badge if his hardline anti-clothing stance is to
work.

34. Features Of Gnome Do | Linux Made Easy [Read Online]

A small utility that is starting to get lots of popular attention is Gnome
Do.

This oddly named piece of software lets you perform sometimes complex
tasks with just a couple of keyboard strokes. For instance, you can enter
part of a file name, and from there perform a variety of tasks on the
matched file, including opening it, moving or renaming it. You can also
enter a Firefox bookmark or any URL and have Firefox launch and access
that site.

A very useful feature is the ability to launch an application quickly by typing part of its name. It can
easily be extended too; a variety of plug-ins come as standard to enhance the features, all of which

www.bench3.com Page 43
bench3 April 2009

can be enabled or disabled at will. One plug-in lets you quickly upload images to the Imageshack
hosting site, returning the URL to you ready to use. To launch Gnome Do, press the ‘super’ key
(mapped to the ‘Start’ key) and the spacebar together.

Type whatever you wish (such as a URL, a file name, an application to launch, etc). and then perform
the action, or press the Tab key to decide which action to perform. If youmatch the name of an image
file, you could decide to open this, upload it to Flickr or to Imageshack.
The utility is available directly from the Ubuntu and Fedora repositories.

35. New Delhi To Observe Earth Hour Every Month [Read Online]
The Delhi government has proposed to hold an Earth Hour on the
last working day of every month, urging residents to switch off non
essential lights to save power on the lines of the recently held
global campaign. The proposal has been given the go-ahead by chief
minister Sheila Dikshit,
In addition, the government also plans to advertise the monthly campaign and screen promotional
videos in 50 cinema halls similar to the lines on which they promoted the global campaign.
So will it work?
The concept of the Earth Hour campaign was started in Australia in 2007. This year's Earth Hour and
climate change initiative by the World Wide Fund (WWF) saw 80 countries taking part in the
community initiative to save energy.

The Delhi government's action shows that positive voluntary action by citizens can lead to good
things for larger benefits for environment. Secondly, if Delhi takes the lead then other cities and
states are likely to follow and can be pursued.
The global campaign to save energy emerged at a crucial time, months ahead of the Copenhagen
climate change summit. The government's role now is even more pressing than ever.
The one billion people in India endorsed the Earth Hour campaign that says something significant
about how the issue of climate is perceived here.

36. IPV6 Is To Rescue IPV4 [Read Online]
According to experts, we will run out of IPv4 web addresses next year.
Thankfully, IPv6, which uses 128-bit binary numbers as opposed to
IPv4’s 32-bit, is here to save the day.
What is IPv6?
IPv6 supports most of the same functions and applications that were
supported in IPv4. Those functions that were not successful in IPv4 were
either not included or improved in IPv6.

IPv6 is a new version of the internetworking protocol designed to address the scalability and service
shortcomings of the current standard, IPv4.

The changes in IPv6 include:

• The most obvious change is the increased address size from 32 bits to 128 bits. The larger
address size supports a larger internet base, a flexible and diverse internet architecture, and
auto-configuration.
• The header format has been greatly simplified for IPv6. Some of the header fields have been
removed and others have been moved to the optional IPv6 Extension Header. The IPv6 header
is only twice the size of the IPv4 header, yet the IPv6 address is four times as large.
• IPv6 header options are encoded differently. Options are now carried in a separate IPv6
extension header that travels between the normal IPv6 header and the transport-layer header in
a packet. Also, the options length is no longer limited to 40 bytes. The IPv6 Extension Header
facilitates routing by allowing routers to quickly identify whether an option should be
processed or ignored.

www.bench3.com Page 45
bench3 April 2009

• The creation of the Anycast Address. The Anycast Address is simply a Unicast Address that
associated with more than one interface/node. When routed, the Anycast Address packet is
only sent to the closest routable address.
• The addition of the scope field to the Multicast Address. The scope field allows for the
scalability of multicast routing. In this fashion, the Multicast Address can be addressed
globally-specific; to routers, groups of routers, or special nodes.
• Quality-of-Service support in the Flow Label Field of the IPv6 Header. Packets may be
labeled according to the type of traffic they contain, such as real-time service for video-
conference links.
• Privacy and Security support is also included in IPv6. IPv6 Extension Headers may now better
carry authentication options that were not practical for use in IPv4. The authentication options
only need to be processed by specific routers along the path, instead of forcing every router to
process all of the options for every packet that it receives. Internet Protocol Security (IPSEC)
works below the application level.
• Automatic configuration with Internet Control Messaging Protocol version 6 (ICMPv6)
allows interfaces to identify or verify addresses. Using ICMPv6 Neighbor Discovery; an
interface can verify its Link-Local Address. Using ICMPv6 Router Solicitation; an interface
can identify an IPv6 prefix to create its unique Global Address
Unfortunately, IPv4 and IPv6 are not directly compatible, so programs and systems designed to one
standard can not communicate with those designed to the other.

37. The Fox And The Stork | Moral Story [Read Online]

A selfish fox once invited a stork to dinner at his home in a hollow

tree. That evening, the stork flew to the fox’s home and knocked on
the door with her long beak. The fox opened the door and said,
“Please come in and share my food.”

The stork was invited to sit down at the table. She was very hungry

www.bench3.com Page 46
bench3 April 2009

and the food smelled delicious! The fox served soup in shallow bowls and he licked up all his soup
very quickly. However, the stork could not have any of it as the bowl was too shallow for her long
beak. The poor stork just smiled politely and stayed hungry.

The selfish fox asked, “Stork, why haven’t you taken your soup? Don’t you like it?” The stork
replied, “It was very kind of you to invite me for dinner. Tomorrow evening, please join me for
dinner at my home.” The next day, when the fox arrived at the stork’s home, he saw that they were
also having soup for dinner. This time the soup was served in tall jugs. The stork drank the soup
easily but the fox could not reach inside the tall jug. This time it was his turn to go hungry.
A selfish act can backfire on you.

38. Windows 7 Beta Debut | Review [Read Online]
The just released Microsoft Windows 7 Beta 1 retains much of
Vista's Kernel architecture, as well the final verson.

But the new OS is more compact than Vista, has an updated

interface, and builds in better networking capability. It also includes
some cool advances, such as multitouch support and a redesigned
taskbar with movable buttons.

You can put the beta on as many machines as you like, but you can't use it for real business purposes,
and it expires in August 2009.

Though the interface has its own new look, Vista users won't have much to learn. Even upgrading XP
users will have little trouble, but neither will then be able to cling to the past. There's no XP
emulation theme in Windows 7, as there is in Vista. The taskbar has the most noticeable changes,
with taller buttons and the choice to combine multiple docs/windows in one app or keep separate. The

www.bench3.com Page 47
bench3 April 2009

buttons glow when you hover the mouse over them and show a preview thumbnail of open docs.
Also, the Libraries folder-arrangement system let you group related files - regardless of their location.
Windows 7 is also optimized for touch-screen systems.

Some other noteworthy features in Windows 7 relate to hardware and networking. Device Stage is a
feather that, when you plugh in a cell phone or other device, pops up a screen specific to that device
with options, including syncing. (However, this feature relies heavily on the device manufacturers
providing Mictosoft with the necessary data.) When you join a wireless network with Windows 7,
you can choose to set ir as home, work, or public. When you choose the first, you can create a
HomeGroup. That way, you can specify libraries and devices to share, as well as migrate settings to
your home environment.

Although the licensing agreement for Windows 7 beta prevents me from publishing benchmark test
results, I can say informally that in a couple of months of running the pre-beta and a short period of
heavy-duty testing on beta 1, I have yet to see any thing remotely resembling a crash. I have,
however, encountered occasional error dialogs. As far as recommending Windows 7, we'll have to
wait to see how the pricing and final code bears out. But for those who like to tinker, I definitely
recommend taking a look at the future of Windows.

39. $ 2000 Car | What Is The Nano Like To Drive? [Read Online]
THE cacophonous capillaries of India’s infrastructure may be about
to get a lot more clogged. By the end of 2010 there could be as
many as 300,000 Tata Nanos on India’s roads. Well before its
launch, the tiny car had become an object of loathing for
environmentalists (unfairly—it is one of the cleanest vehicles
around). But for potential buyers, what matters is whether it is any good.

Despite the Nano’s size (it is a bit over ten feet, or three metres long) its interior is surprisingly
spacious. This is no accident. The car is the pet project of Ratan Tata, the Tata group’s revered

www.bench3.com Page 48
bench3 April 2009

chairman, who is over six feet tall. Accordingly, the Nano is optimised for the 95th percentile of
American men. In South Asia, this makes the car downright cavernous. When it comes to
performance, the Nano goes from zero to 100kph (60mph) in a languid 30 seconds, but it is
surprisingly enjoyable to drive. And with a petrol consumption of 67mpg, few cars can match its fuel-
efficiency.

But the Nano’s real beauty lies in its design. Putting the engine at the back means the car’s footprint
is 8% smaller but provides 21% more interior space than that of the Maruti 800, the next cheapest car
on the Indian market, which costs twice as much.

The Nano has its flaws. When left open, the doors do not remain ajar, and the rear hatch does not
open at all (to increase the car’s strength and safety). There is no radio or glove compartment. The
interior is made of cheap grey plastic chosen more for its durability than its aesthetic or tactile appeal.
And the engine sounds like a lawnmower.

But the Nano does not shake as it approaches its top speed of 105kph, and feels reassuringly stable.
There is a crumple zone at the front, and a bar across the car, on which the front seats are mounted,
improves rigidity in the event of a side impact. (It also doubles as a footrest for passengers in the
back.) Tata has filed for three dozen patents for the Nano, mostly for innovations that are out of sight.
The designers found that there was no room for the battery in the back with the engine, for example.
Placing it under the bonnet at the front, along with the spare tyre, would have required long, costly
copper wires. To balance the car and save money, they put the battery under the driver’s seat—an

40. The Monkey And The Dolphin | Moral Story [Read Online]
One day long ago, some sailors set out to sea in their sailing ship.
One of them brought his pet monkey along for the long journey.
When they were far out at sea, a terrible storm overturned their
ship.

Everyone fell into the sea, and the monkey was sure that he would
drown. Suddenly a dolphin appeared and picked him up. They soon reached the island and the
monkey came down from the dolphin’s back.

The dolphin asked the monkey, “Do you know this place?” The monkey replied, “Yes, I do. In fact,
the king of the island is my best friend. Do you know that I am actually a prince?”

Knowing that no one lived on the island, the dolphin said, “Well, well, so you are a prince! Now you
can be a king!” The monkey asked, “How can I be a king?” As the dolphin started swimming away,
he answered, “That is easy. As you are the only creature on this island, you will naturally be the
king!”
Those who lie and boast may end up in trouble.

41. Alternatives To Remote Assistance [Read Online]
Helping people sort out PC problems remotely – or getting help
yourself – isn’t difficult, and best of all Windows comes with all the
free tools you need. Windows Remote Assistance lets another user
see your PC’s entire desktop and optionally take control of your
mouse and keyboard.

Although the Windows Remote Assistance feature is quite

www.bench3.com Page 50
bench3 April 2009

powerful, an even more flexible option exists in the form of UltraVNC. UltraVNC is commonly used
as a support tool to take control of other computers that are used on the same local network. But it can
also be used like Remote Assistance to take control of a remote computer via the internet or used
solely to view the screen of another PC.

Just as with Remote Assistance, remote sessions with UltraVNC must be confirmed by the person
whose computer is being connected to, helping them to avoid unwanted connections from malicious
users. UltraVNC can be downloaded free from www.uvnc.com and, while it’s more complicated than
Windows Remote Assistance, it is also far more powerful and can be put to a variety of uses. It’s
definitely worth a look for experienced users.

Paid-for help:
There are numerous commercial remote access applications available, such as Gotomypc
(www.gotomypc.com), I’m in Touch (www.01com.com/imintouch) and Log Me In
(www.logmein.com), but most of these are aimed at getting access to your own PC from a remote
location, rather than giving someone remote support. But Gotomypc does allow you to let someone
else take control of your PC (and chat to them) and costs £11.99 per month.

If you wanted to set up a small remote access and support network for, say, a club or organisation, a
Gotomypc Pro subscription is cheaper at just over £110 per PC per year (monthly plans are also
available) and allows you to act as a central administrator for users. Those products aimed purely at
remote support, such as Log Me In Rescue, are generally business-oriented, with prices to match – a
monthly subscription to Log Me In Rescue costs £76, but this lets you support unlimited users. Log
Me In Rescue doesn’t require the PC you’re assisting to have any special pre-installed software – a
small file is sent to the remote PC that allows communication just for the duration of the session.

42. Muslim Education | Studying Their Faith Is A Time-Consuming Business [Read Online]
Every school urges its pupils to spend time on extra-curricular
things such as crafts, hobbies and special computer lessons. But
they have to happen before school starts / time after class. When the
bell goes in mid-afternoon, most Muslim pupils head straight to a
madrassa to learn the Koran.

It finds the children “very spiritual”, with a deep belief in God. But though they study the same
subjects as other pupils—these children spend a lot of time in a Muslim cocoon. They are drilled
intensively in their faith outside school; what goes on inside school reflects both Govt. policy and
local social reality. There is huge demand among Muslim parents for Islamic schools, partly because
the academic results of the best of them are excellent, and partly because the Govt. doesn’t offer what
parents want. Their wish-list includes prayer facilities, segregated sport and science lessons that treat
evolution only as a theory. Places at the few Govt.-funded Muslim schools that exist are
oversubscribed. Whether they go to a Evening school linked to a mosque or to a full-time Muslim
college, young Muslims devote many hours to learning their faith. Wherever these hours are spent, it
adds up to an experience of life that differs vastly from that of other young—and this complicates, at
the least, official efforts to boost social cohesion.

Mosques and religious schools must do more to help youngsters make sense of the world. But at the
grass-roots the force of this point is clearer. For all the time spent on instruction, many young
Muslims have never heard much about how to apply their faith to daily life. That is partly because
madrassas stress learning by rote, and sermons in mosques tend to be in Urdu or Arabic which few
understand. In the words, the failure of mosques and madrassas to communicate well with youngsters
creates “ungoverned spaces” into which extremists step.

Dealing with this by boosting—with cash or advice—the capacity of mosques and the schools they
run is a long shot. But life in some urban parts is so steeped in Islam that it needs to be well and
responsibly taught: that, at any rate.

43. The Ant And The Dove | Moral Story [Read Online]
One hot day, an ant was searching for some water. After walking around for
some time, she came to a spring. To reach the spring, she had to climb up a
blade of grass.

While making her way up, she slipped and fell into the water. She could
have drowned if a dove up a nearby tree had not seen her. Seeing that the
ant was in trouble, the dove quickly plucked off a leaf and dropped it into
the water near the struggling ant.

The ant moved towards the leaf and climbed up there. Soon it carried her safely to dry ground. Just at
that time, a hunter nearby was throwing out his net towards the dove, hoping to trap it.

Guessing what he was about to do, the ant quickly bit him on the heel. Feeling the pain, the hunter
dropped his net. The dove was quick to fly away to safety.
One good turn deserves another.

45. Sharing Files Between Windows and Linux [Read Online]

So, your Windows PC is already set up to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux, and you’ve explored Linux
enough to know that you want to live inside it for a while. Problem is, all your files are on an NTFS
partition on the Windows half of your machine, and Ubuntu can’t see that partition, no matter what
you do. That’s because Microsoft considers the workings of the NTFS fi le system a highly
confidential trade secret (unlike the workings of FAT32, for example). What to do? There’s the old
standby of e-mailing the fi les to yourself, or uploading them to an FTP site or a Yahoo! Briefcase or
some such storage location. It works. But come on—it’s 2008, already. For regular work you need
something more direct, and Linux’s development community has come up with multiple ways to
work around Microsoft’s roadblocks and help this happen.

Three quick and easy solutions present themselves: NTFS-3G, Samba, and NTFS for Linux. NTFS-
3G is a driver that gives Linux users full access to NTFS drives installed on the same PC. Ubuntu’s
new Gutsy Gibbon distro includes the driver in the Synaptic Package Manager. Samba (also found
through Synaptic) is designed to provide fi le and print services to all SMB clients, including
Microsoft Windows.

It functions primarily as a network utility, in effect mounting your NTFS drives onto your Linux
network. NTFS for Linux is a powerful tool for IT managers, but the personal version gets you simple
read/write access.—Neil Randall

www.bench3.com Page 54
bench3 April 2009

1 USE THE FILE BROWSER

After installing either Samba or NTFS-3G, use Ubuntu’s File Browser to locate the NTFS partition
you want to work with and double-click to open it.

2 CHECK THE VOLUME’S PROPERTIES

The Volume Properties dialog box in Ubuntu shows that this folder has indeed been formatted as
NTFS.
3 GO PRO WITH NTFS FOR LINUX
Well-known Windows utility maker Paragon Software distributes NTFS for Linux, as either an IT-
targeted tool ($149.95), a full-featured package ($29.95), or a free download. The free version gives
access to your Linux partitions but is read-only.

ON THE WINDOWS SIDE: LINUX READER AND EX2 IFS

Two programs provide access to your Linux drives from within Windows. The Linux Reader from
DiskInternals (pictured) gives you read-only access and makes you use its included viewer, while Ex2
IFS provides both read and write access from Windows Explorer. But before installing Ex2 IFS, read
the site’s troubleshooting page, which lists some issues you might experience (although I had no
trouble with either program). Both give access even to protected Linux partitions, ignoring Linux
security, so be aware of this before installing.

46. The Hare And The Tortoise | Moral Story [Read Online]
A tortoise one day met a hare who made fun of her. “My, my, you
move so slowly, you will never get far!” The tortoises, upset by the
hare’s manner, said, “Let’s have a race and see who is faster.”

The hare laughed and said, “You must be joking! But all right, we’ll
see who reaches the other side of the hill first.” Off he ran, leaving
the tortoise far behind. After a while, the hare stopped to wait for

the tortoise to come long.

He waited and waited till he felt sleepy. “I might as well take a nap,” he thought. “Even if she catches
up with me, I can easily win the race.” So he lay down under a shady tree and closed his eyes.

When the tortoise passed the sleeping hare, she walked on slowly but steadily. By the time the hare
woke up, the tortoise was near the finishing line. He ran as fast as he could, but he could not catch up
with the tortoise.
Slow and steady can win the race.

47. Web Spiders Are Used To Track Down Terrorists Online. | Dark Web [Read Online]
Terrorists don’t use the Internet solely to recruit members, spread
their ideology, and raise funds for their activities. They also use it to
conduct their own internal debates, creating a rich pool of
information for analysis by counterterrorist groups.

Gabriel Weimann, a professor of communication at the University

of Haifa, Israel, and author of the book Terror on the Internet
monitored just 12 Web sites operated by terrorist groups in 1998.
Today he monitors 5,800.

Intelligence agencies are having trouble keeping up with the volume. That’s why researchers from the
Artificial Intelligence Lab at the University of Arizona have developed a set of automated tools to
collect and analyze terrorist content on the Internet in a systematic way.

The project, named the Dark Web, uses Web spidering to find and catalog millions of Web pages,
postings to terrorist forums, videos, and other multimedia content. The Dark Web has identified seven
jihadist Web sites that host 90 percent of the information related to improvised explosive devices,

www.bench3.com Page 56
bench3 April 2009

such as instruction manuals and videos, says project director Hsin chun Chen. The findings are passed
on to military intelligence agencies. To make spiders more effective at retrieving forum contents,
proxies and randomized processes are used so that they don’t get blocked. The group (chen) has also
developed analysis tools to make sense of the content and prioritize the information.

For example, “authorship analysis” captures the writing styles of anonymous senders, and “sentiment
analysis” identifies who on the Web is the most violent and radical. “Some forums have a quarter
million people posting, so there is no way anyone can eyeball those results,” explains Chen. “[Now]
we can analyze millions of postings in a matter of seconds.”

Tools such as the Dark Web help intelligence analysts do the first pass. “They take this massive entity
of the Internet and scale it down into something more manageable.” But Moran (Deputy Director,
Virginia-based Terrorism Research Center.) retains some skepticism about the ability of such
automated tools as spiders to differentiate adequately between relevant data and junk.

Weimann agrees with Moran that human judgment remains an invaluable tool in determining which
sites contain potentially harmful content. “What automated search can do is save expenses,
manpower, and time. But it is limited in the depth of the analysis. Human eyes and mind see more
and deeper than a crawler,”

FINDING TERRORISM ONLINE: HOW IT WORKS

Methods (beyond Web spiders) To Identify Terrorist Web Content.
• Searching the Web using the State Department’s list of known terrorism groups.
• Sharing information with other terrorism research groups.
• Searching known keywords of several terrorist groups (for example, many jihadist sites refer to Osama bin
Laden as the “Big Chief”).
• Doing link analysis—following links posted on terrorist sites to explore other possibly dangerous sites.
• Employing domain experts skilled in Arabic to analyze and browse domains. Chen emphasizes that the team
does not pursue fundamentalist Muslim sites that do not advocate or promote violence.

48. The Framer And The Stork | Moral Story [Read Online]
Finding that cranes were destroying his newly sown corn, a farmer one evening
set a net in his field to catch the destructive birds. When he went to examine
the net next morning he found a number of cranes and also a stork.

“Release me, I beseech you,” cried the stork, “for I have eaten none of your
corn, nor have I done you any harm. I am a poor innocent stork, as you may
see - a most dutiful bird, I honor my father and mother. I...”
But the farmer cut him short. “All this may be true enough, I dare say, but I
have caught you with those were destroying my crops, and you must suffer with the company in
which you are found.”
People are judged by the company they keep.

49. Determine Your Backup Process
As your storage increases, so do your backup needs.
There are nearly as many ways to back up your business data as
there are ways to lose the data and require that backup. Products
available to perform archiving duties range from the venerable tape
backup to newer technologies such as hard drive, CD, and DVD, or

www.bench3.com Page 58
bench3 April 2009

even remote storage facilities. No matter which you select, the principles of data backup are the same,
and it’s important to understand which data needs to get backed up, how often, and for how long.

The first step is pure common sense, yet it is frequently skipped: Conduct a thorough analysis and
inventory of existing systems with a focus on data storage. It will be tedious, but you need to catalog
the location, owner, and importance of each bit of data. The alternative is to back up everything,
wasting time by writing extraneous files and wasting money on extra media.

That “total backup solution” is what a lot of so-called experts advise, probably because they take
advice from companies looking to sell more tapes / DVD. But you may not have to do it. A good
place to start is simply by listing the directories on each server or storage device in a spreadsheet and
then adding columns for the type of data in that directory (the content, not the file type— “Contracts”
or “Bookmarks,” not DOC or XLS), the owner (who would care if the fi les were deleted), and
whether they are essential to your business. In a more complex environment—for example, an online
business that has no off-hours—add another column for a time when no one is using the fi le and it
can be backed up.

This brings up an interesting question: What is essential to your business? For a simple answer,
ask yourself, “If I lose that file, could I lose money?” Note that the question is could rather than
would; this casts a wider net—better safe than sorry. Next consider your backup schedule; there’s a
whole theory and science to backup rotations. There are three common methods.

A full backup includes all fi les whether they have been changed or not; differential includes all
files changed since the last full backup; and incremental includes only those files that have changed
since the last backup of any kind. Beyond that, here’s some sound, basic advice for proper business
backup.

Back Up Data Every Day, Applications Less Often Save your backups for longer than you think you
have to—something unexpected always comes up. (Why is it still unexpected? No one knows.) I tend
to use an adapted version of Grandfather-Father-Son: I call every third Grandfather an archive and
don’t overwrite it.

www.bench3.com Page 59
bench3 April 2009

Test Your Backups : Like many of my friends, I have learned the hard way that just because you set
up a job, load a tape, run the job, and even read a successful report does not mean that files were
actually backed up. Tapes fail (they are mechanical), files are locked and can’t be copied, and
software errors do occur. Frankly, backup software is notorious for reporting that everything is
satisfactory when in fact the job has failed. As a fail-safe, at least once a month, you should select a
few files at random and restore them, making sure not to overwrite newer versions. Then open the
files and confirm that they are intact and usable. If you find that they aren’t, you have time to address
the problem before an emergency arises. Make sure that you do so. Always Keep Some Sort of
Backup Off Site The reason for off-site backup is simple: If something physically catastrophic
happens at your place of work and your backups are there, they will be rendered inaccessible or
destroyed. Store your offsite backup securely, in a lockbox or safe, and update it with a current
backup every six months. Protecting something just long enough for someone to steal (or something
to destroy) every bit of data your company cherishes is not going to help you.

50. The Boy Who Cried 'Wolf' | Moral Story [Read Online]
Once there was a shepherd boy who had to look after a flock of
sheep. One day, he felt bored and decided to play a trick on the
villagers. He shouted, “Help! Wolf! Wolf!”
The villagers heard his cries and rushed out of the village to help the
shepherd boy.
When they reached him, they asked, “Where is the wolf?” The
shepherd boy laughed loudly, “Ha, Ha, Ha! I fooled all of you. I was
only playing a trick on you.”

A few days later, the shepherd boy played this trick again. Again he cried, “Help! Help! Wolf! Wolf!”
Again, the villagers rushed up the hill to help him and again they found that boy had tricked them.
They were very angry with him for being so naughty. Then, some time later, a wolf went into the
field. The wolf attacked one sheep, and then another and another. The shepherd boy ran towards the
village shouting, “Help! Help! Wolf! Help! Somebody!”

www.bench3.com Page 60
bench3 April 2009

The villagers heard his cries but they laughed because they thought it was another trick. The boy ran
to the nearest villager and said, “A wolf is attacking the sheep. I lied before, but this time it is true!”

Finally, the villagers went to look. It was true. They could see the wolf running away and many dead
sheep lying on the grass.
We may not believe someone who often tells lies, even when he tells the truth.

51. Five Reasons To Backup Your Data [Read Online]
Storing your entire digital life on a PC or laptop has never been
easier. However, keeping your treasured memories, digital
entertainment, and crucial documents in one place also means
you’re in constant danger of losing it all in the blink of an eye.
That’s why protecting your data with regular backups is as
important as ever:
1. Without a reliable backup, data loss is painful, costly, and often permanent:Your data isn’t
just a bunch of electronicbits, it’s your life! And you could lose it all in an instant. Hard drives
crash, laptops disappear, people delete things they shouldn’t have…it happens all the time.
Sure, you can spend the time and money to download all your favorite MP3’s and TV shows
again. But what about your digital photos, college term papers? Without a backup of your
irreplaceable data and memories, once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.
2. Viruses, worms, and malware are a constant threat: As if hardware failure and theft weren’t
enough to worry about, malicious code can also wreak havoc on your data. No virus scanner
is 100% effec-compromise an entire machine. During a successful infection viruses and
malware can corrupt files and data inaccessible.
3. Restoring data after a loss is a huge hassle: Without a solid backup and restore plan in place,
getting back on your feet after losing a hard drive can take an eternity. Unless your idea of fun
is spending countless hours re-installing your operating system and programs, restarting your
latest school or office projects from scratch, or finding and downloading your favorite music

www.bench3.com Page 61
bench3 April 2009

and movies all over again, taking the time to make a backup copy is well worth the
investment. In a pinch, professional data recovery services may be able to salvage data from a
failed or corrupted hard disk using specialized software or by repairing the drive in a clean
room environment. However, the cost of these services often run into the hundreds or even
thousands of dollars and success is not guaranteed. When it comes to protecting your data, an
ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure.
4. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best: Flood, fire, earthquake, tornado, tsunami—
disaster recovery isn’t the most pleasant thing to think about but it is important. Ensuring your
data is safe, ideally with an offsite backup, is a good way to protect yourself and your loved
ones when Mother Nature lets loose. When the dust clears it’ll be nice to have one less thing
to worry about.
5. The backup drive isn’t just good for backups: External hard drives make great backup devices,
but they have other benefits as well. For Example, they cann provide additional storage
capacity when you run out of space on your laptop or desktop PC. They’re also a convenient
way to share files with friends and family. Also, compact mobile drives make it easy to bring
your digital life with you on the road.
Now that you know why backup is so important. Start up...

Two men were walking along one summer day.
Soon it became too hot to go any further, and
seeing a large plane tree nearby, they threw
themselves on the ground to rest in its shade.
Gazing up into the branches one man said to the
other:
“What a useless tree this is. It does not have fruit
or nuts that we can eat and we cannot even use its
wood for anything.”
“Don’t be so ungrateful,”
Rustled the tree in reply.
“I am being extremely useful to you at this very moment, shielding you from the hot sun. And you
call me a good-for-nothing!”

54. Turn Back Time With Disk Imaging | Hard Disk Backup [Read Online]
There will always be times when the only way to restore yuor PC to
its former glory is to bite the bullect and reinstall windows. This
process, however, created its own problems, not least that you'll
have to also reinstall all your applications.

If you do decide to reinstall windows, or have just bought a new PC,

it's worth investing in some disk-imaging software. Imaging is the
proces of creating a snapshot of your hard disk, enabling you to returb your PC to that precise srate.
It's best to create the image after you've installed all your essectial software, so when you re-image
your hard disk you'll have everything up and running.

55. Why Someone Undeserved Is Promoted | Management Story [Read Online]

In the forest a lion is sitting outside his cave, lying lazily in the sun.
Along comes a fox, out on a walk.

Fox: "Do you know the time, because my watch is broken"

Lion: "Oh, I can easily fix the watch for you"
Fox: "Hmm... But it's a very complicated mechanism, and your big
claws will only destroy it even more“
Lion: "Oh no, give it to me, and it will be fixed"
Fox: "That's ridiculous! Any fool knows that lazy lions with great claws cannot fix complicated
watches"
Lion: "Sure they do, give it to me and it will be fixed"The lion disappears into his cave, and after a
while he comes back with the watch which is running perfectly. The fox is impressed, and the lion
continues to lie lazily in the sun, looking very pleased with himself.

big claws can fix a complicated TV“
Lion: "No problem. Do you want to try it?"The lion goes into his cave, and after a while comes back
with a perfectly fixed TV.
The wolf goes away happily and amazed.

Scene :
Inside the lion's cave. In one corner are half a dozen small and intelligent looking rabbits who are
busily doing very complicated work with very detailed instruments. In the other corner lies a huge
lion looking very pleased with himself.

57. Google Is In Late Stage Negotiations To Acquire Twitter [Read Online]
Google is in "late stage" talks to acquire microblogging service
Twitter, according to a report Thursday on TechCrunch citing
two unnamed sources.

Twitter lets people post short 140-character messages; people

often subscribe to follow the stream of these tweets from
acquaintances and, increasingly, companies and celebrities. After
an unpleasant rocky period when the company's servers
frequently were crushed under the strain of the service, the Twitter has experienced tremendous
growth.

Google's origins, core technology, and profits come from search, but Twitter would fit in neatly with
the company's somewhat lackluster attempt to become more of a social hub, too. Facebook, which
attempted to acquire Twitter in 2008, is the exemplar of just how rich a medium the Internet can
become for social interactions. Social sites, though, have had a hard time showing they can mean
revenue and profits as well.

Twitter isn't just about sharing with friends, though. It's increasingly about search as well. Twitter has
been working to elevate the prominence of search, which can give a near-real-time window into
what's on the mind of innumerable users.

And Google knows well how to treat new sources of information as signals that weigh into search
results. The company has been gradually blending into its search results data sources such as blogs
and news stories that reflect new information arriving on the Web.

Plenty of people search for relatively timeless information, but plane crashes, earthquakes, election
results, and other events are popular search subjects, too, and Google constantly strives to better
match its results with what people are actually seeking.

58. Things Aren't Always What They Seem | Moral Story [Read Online]
Two travelling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a
wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels
stay in the mansion's guestroom. Instead the angels were given a
small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the
hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it.
When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, "Things aren't always what they seem."

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his
wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they
could have a good night's rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer
and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.
The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen? The
first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused. The second family had little but was
willing to share everything, and you let the cow die.

"Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied. "When we stayed in the basement of
the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed
with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn't find it."

"Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the
cow instead. Things aren't always what they seem." Sometimes that is exactly what happens when

www.bench3.com Page 67

things don't turn out the way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every outcome
is always to your advantage. You might not know it until some time later...
Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams
when the first tree said, "Someday I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and
precious gems. I could be decorated with intricate carving and everyone would see the beauty." Then
the second tree said, "Someday I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters
and sail to the corners of the world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull."

Finally the third tree said, "I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People
will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how
close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time and people will always remember
me." After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came
upon the trees. When one came to the first tree he said, "This looks like a strong tree, I think I should
be able to sell the wood to a carpenter" and he began cutting it down. The tree was happy, because he
knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest.

At the second tree a woodsman said, "This looks like a strong tree, I should be able to sell it to the
shipyard." The second tree was happy because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty
ship. When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened because he knew that if
they cut him down his dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said, "I don't need
anything special from my tree so I'll take this one", and he cut it down. When the first tree arrived at
the carpenters, he was made into a feed box for animals. He was then placed in a barn and filled with
hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for. The second tree was cut and made into a small
fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end. The third tree
was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark.

The years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. Then one day, a man and woman came to
the barn. She gave birth and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the
first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to
do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of
all time. Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them

www.bench3.com Page 68
bench3 April 2009

was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose and the tree didn't
think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and he stood and
said "Peace" and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings
in its boat.

Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets as the people mocked
the man who was carrying it. When they came to a stop, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in
the air to die at the top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong
enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been
crucified on it.

The moral of this story is that when things don't seem to be going your way, always know that God
has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got

59. Know About 'Chain of Command' [Read Online]
Chain of Command: In military context, chain of
command is the line of authority and responsibility
along which the orders are passed in a military unit
and between different units. The orders are
transmitted down the chain of command from
higher officers to the lower ranked personnel.

Generally, orders are given in military only by the

personnel directly above and are received by those
who are directly below the person giving the orders.
Further, the orders are taken by the military
personnel only from the officers posted
immediately above them in their own unit and not in other units.

60. Gazelle Browsers Sinks Roots Into OS [Read Online]
Microsoft is developing a new browser called Gazelle, which it says
is more secure than Firefox, Google Chrome and even its own latest
offering, Internet Explorer 8.

The Gazelle kernel is effectively part of the operating system,

having exclusive control of system resources and responsiblity for
protecting them.

One aim is to address vulnerabilities caused by the fact that browsers have to deal with many sites at
once, and that web pages themselves may draw resources from different domains.

Gazelle opens a new browser, with high-level functions such as rendering and HTML parsing, for
each domain in its own protected zone; but all links with the host resources, and between browser
stances, are handled by the Gazelle OS kernel.

The browser is slower than existing code and the project, outlined in a paper at
www.tinyurl.com/baza29 is currently only a proof of concept. But other browser vendors are not
standing still Apple's now available in beta has gone native in windows, taking on the microsoft look
and feel. Mozilla, too has released an update for Firefox addressing security issues.

61. A Glass of Milk | Moral Story [Read Online]

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found
he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next

house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he
asked for a drink of water.
She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then
asked, "How much do I owe you?" "You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us
never to accept pay for a kindness." He said..... "Then I thank you from my heart." As Howard Kelly
left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He
had been ready to give up and quit.

Year's later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent
her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was
called in for the consultation.

When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he
rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to
see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best
to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case. After a long struggle, the battle
was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then
wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure
it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her
attention on the side of the bill. She read these words.

"Paid in full with one glass of milk"

(Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly.
Tears of joy flooded!

62. Anti-Virus Firms Defend Fees [Read Online]
Anti-virus companies have responded to complaints that users are being
pushed into paying for support to remove malware their own software has
failed to get rid of. One of my friend raised the issue with symantec after
trying to clear a virus from his computer. Symantec's instructions did not
work and twice when he contact its online support. He was told the issue
would be 'escalated' - and was then confronted with a web page giving him
the option of paying or going back where he started from. The page does
not even make clear which service is paid for and which isn't.

Then another friend told me McAfee had tried to charge him $90 to clear a virus its own product had
failed to remove. Both companies say users should not need to pay in these circumstances and that
they would look into the problem. Symantec is reviewing the design of its pages. But if users are
paying for security maintenance and support, what is the point of the paid-for service? And in what
circumstances is one expected to pay?

Symantec said paid-for services are for customers with specific needs, for instance to cover for when
there are no technical staff.

McAfee said its fee-based removal service was for non-customers or for those infected by viruses
because their McAfee protection was out of date.

"Customers with current and up-to-date McAfee subscriptions will not be charged for the removal of
a virus, providing they have not done anything to put themselves at risk". Customers infected with a
new form of virus can use instructions provided by the software to submit their virus to Mcafee Avert
Laabs. "McAfee will attempt to remove any infection for the customer without charge."

Have you been charged extra for virus removal?

63. Three Wishes | Moral story [Read Online]

Long time ago somewhere along the river coast lived a fisherman.
He was leading a happy and content life catching fish and selling
them in a local market to earn his livelihood. He was all alone in
this world. He had lost his parents at an early age, in a flood that
swept his village. He was few of the fortunate to survive.

On one such day, when he was in his boat catching fishes, he caught
amazingly large amount of fishes in his net. This is going to be my
lucky day, he thought while heading toward the local market along with his booty. Suddenly he heard
a strange cry coming from nearby. At first he ignored it, but he heard it again, this time somewhat
sharply. Help, help, save my life... was the cry. The fisherman was puzzled and scared. This is not
possible, he thought for he was all alone and there was no sign of any one else near by, the only
possibility was that his fish could be talking. Thinking that this could be an illusion in his mind, he
dismissed it and started walking towards the market. As he was nearing the market, he again heard
something. If you save my life, I will grant you three wishes said the voice. This time the fisherman
was absolutely sure that he heard it coming from the fish. Immediately, he emptied his load and
started looking into his booty.

Suddenly one fish stood up and started talking. Put me back into water, save my life and you will
have three wishes granted said the fish. The fisherman was scared at first and wanted to run away, but
then as he took a second glance at the small attractive fish with golden fins, he gently lifted it and put
in his carrybottle which he always carried along with his food. After swimming for a while in the
bottle, the fish recovered and thanked the fisherman. The fish then spoke again Thank you sir for
saving my life. Now it is my turn to keep my promise. You see I am a gifted fish and do have some
magical powers, so feel free and ask what you want without any fear. But remember you have only 3
wishes to ask for.

The fisherman could not believe his luck. He could not think what to ask for and was lost. Seeing
this, the fish asked Don't you want to be rich, eat good food, live in a big house, wear good clothes
and live like a king? . Hearing this, the fisherman was dumbstruck all he could say was Yes, Yes, and

www.bench3.com Page 73
bench3 April 2009

nod in excitement. The fish smiled slyly and said so be it. Suddenly a flash appeared and the
fisherman was blinded for a second. The next thing he saw was that he was completely in a different
place. He was dressed up like a king and was sitting on a big dinning table with lots of good food and
as many servants to serve him. Suddenly he looked around for the fish and found him near his seat
comfortably lodged in a fish tank. Don't worry said the fish I won't leave you till I grant your three
wishes. This made the fisherman happy.

Now his lifestyle changed completely. He would get up late in the mornings lazily eat good food,
drink wine and the gamble with his friends till late night and then sleep on his soft and silky bed. This
went on for sometime and then the fisherman started feeling lonely. He again went to the fish and
started talking to him. He asked, Is it a good time to ask for my second wish now?. The fish smiled
and said, Of course my friend, I was waiting for you to come and ask me your second wish.

The fisherman now got very exited and smiled. He then asked for his second wish. You see I have all
the pleasures and wealth that money can buy but no one to share with, Because of that I am feeling
very lonely. I wish for a very beautiful wife, the one who would care for me and love me like no one
else has ever had. The fish again smiled the crooked smile and said 'So be it'. The fisherman could not
believe his eyes when a beautiful damsel appeared before him and bowed down to touch his feet. This
is too good to be true he thought and pinched himself, to find out if he was in a dream but he wasn't ,
this beautiful lady was indeed his wife.

Now the fisherman was no longer lonely. His life became very organized for he had a good wife to
take care of all his needs and make him happy. Life went on for the fisherman and he was content
now. He did not have any worries and there was nothing more he could ask for. Till one morning he
woke up and realized that he does not have much energy left in him. It struck him that he was getting
old. Age was fast catching up with him. This could not happen to me he said and was left puzzled. He
became very grave and started thinking about a solution. Suddenly his eyes lit up and he started
running towards the fish. The fish was expecting his arrival and waited for him to speak. 'My friend'
said the fisherman; you have given me everything I wished for I was all content till I realized that I
am not fit as I used to be earlier to enjoy all the privileges. The fish was calm and asked him 'What
can I do for you. Ask me and your wish will be granted'.

www.bench3.com Page 74
bench3 April 2009

The fisherman knew exactly what he had in his mind and loudly announced. 'My third wish is that
you should make me immortal. Death should not embrace me and I should live forever.' Hearing this
fish started screaming with joy and shouted 'I am free, I am free'. The fisherman asked somewhat
puzzled what happened to my wish. The fish exclaimed delightfully 'So is it'. To his horror, the
fisherman started shrinking and started loosing his legs and hands.

'What have you done to me'?, asked the fisherman to the fish who was slowly turning into a human
form now. The fish smiled and said, 'Thank you for letting me free. I was also leading a simple life
like you before I was trapped into the unholy world of wealth and misery. I was also granted three
boons by one sage and the last boon I asked for was immortality. The sage had to grant my wish for
he was compelled to do so, but at the same time he was aware of the great truth that one who comes
to birth has to die. So he converted me into a fish. After realizing my fault, I prayed to the sage to
relieve me of this curse and he told me to wait for the next greedy man. As my luck would have it I
found you after 100 years. Now it is your turn to find another greedy man to free yourself. And now I
can die in peace. So saying the fish turned into a very old and frail human being.

64. Vista Service Pack 2 Preview | Vista’s Second Coming [Read Online]
Vista’s second service pack has quietly sneaked into beta testing, but
does it fix much?

With all the fuss about Windows 7, it’s easy to forget that Microsoft
has a current operating system to maintain. Since its release the much-
maligned Vista platform has seen many updates and bug fixes, both
major and minor, which have cleared up many of the issues responsible
for the mixed reception it received at its debut.
The most significant of these, Service Pack 1 (SP1), incorporated significant improvements in
performance and reliability which some would say brought the operating system up to the level of

www.bench3.com Page 75
bench3 April 2009

quality it should have attained prior to its general release. SP1 also included fixes for issues that
affected large numbers of users, for example poor network file transfer performance.

As the time draws near for the release of Service Pack 2 (SP2), Microsoft has made a beta version of
the patch publicly available for testing. You can try out the software for yourself by following the
instructions here. Tempting as it may be to some of us to immediately download the very latest code
available, SP2 is unlikely to provide many new toys to play with. If you crave the thrills and spills of
a daring new desktop experience, get thee hence to the Windows 7 preview. This beta is for people
who want to ensure their applications and infrastructure will work properly in time for the release of
the service pack.

However, within the relatively minor selection of new features there are some interesting additions
and improvements. What’s new The content and scope of a Windows service pack varies greatly from
service pack to service pack. Sometimes major new features are added, for example the Security
Center introduced in Windows XP Service Pack 2, and sometimes deeper changes are made: Vista’s
SP1 updated the Windows kernel code to bring it in line with that in Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft uses these service packs to deliver whatever changes it deems necessary. All you can be
sure of is that you’ll get a raft of bug fixes, which will be incorporated into retail copies of Windows
so you don’t have to go through the painful process of downloading hundreds of patches every time
you do a re-install. If you’ve been diligent in your regular visits to the Windows Update service, or
allowed Windows to install updates automatically, you may already have a large number of these
patches installed.

One of the main purposes of a service pack is to provide a one-step process for bringing a PC up to
date with these updates. SP2 also provides further compatibility improvements targeted at specific
applications. For example, Zone Alarm and Spysweeper now work correctly when integrated with
Pop3 email accounts. For end users, there’s almost nothing new to see in Vista SP2. It’s all about
improving the running of the operating system, with most new features restricted to hidden, under-
the-hood updates aimed at developers and administrators. A great deal of the content of SP2 is aimed

www.bench3.com Page 76
bench3 April 2009

primarily at Windows Server 2008 – this now runs in parallel with Vista from a service pack point of
view.

The two operating systems share the same kernel and, thanks to Microsoft’s single serviceability
model, can share service packs and updates. This service pack will therefore install on both operating
systems, although we’ll be concentrating here on those changes that affect Vista. Remember, the
service pack is still in beta, so there may yet be new features added that aren’t covered here.
The details Below is a list of the main specific changes, fixes and improvements in SP2:
• Improved audio and video performance for streaming HD content.
• Enhanced hardware support for DirectX.
• The operating system has also been patched to enable better Wifi connection performance when
resuming from sleep mode.
• Windows Search has been updated to version 4.0 and provides better indexing and more relevant
search results. This Windows service helps you find and preview information on your PC whether it’s
stored in documents, emails, photos, music files or many other types of data.
• Over 400 previously available updates have been incorporated into SP2. SP2 allows drag and drop
from Blu-ray drives.
‘Service Pack 2 is all about improving the running of the operating system’

One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus,
and drove off along the route. No problems for the first few stops, a
few people got on, a few got off, and things went generally well. At
the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got on. Six feet eight,
built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at

the driver and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" and sat down at the back.

The driver was five feet three, thin, and basically meek... Naturally, he didn't argue with Big John, but
he wasn't happy about it. The next day the same thing happened -Big John got on again, said "Big
John doesn't pay!" and sat down. And the next day, and the one after that, and so forth. This irritated
the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking advantage of his size.

Finally he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body building program, karate, judo and all that
good stuff. By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong; So on the next Monday, when Big
John got on the bus and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" the driver stood up, glared back and screamed,
"And why not?" With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, "Big John has a Bus pass."

66. Yahoo Music To Include iTunes, YouTube Integration [Read Online]
Yahoo will launch a revamped version of its music service today,
which will include artists' pages and modules from competing
services like iTunes, Pandora, and Amazon.

Users visiting Yahoo Music will have the option of listening to

music from iTunes, Amazon, Last.fm, Rhapsody, Pandora, or
YouTube while remaining on the Yahoo site.

The site will also feature artists pages with tour dates, music videos, downloads, streaming content,
editorial content, and more from top artists. Yahoo said that it will soon open up its platform to any
musician, artist, or record label so they can create their own artist pages.

Yahoo first announced plans for a more open music platform in September. Yahoo had its own music
service – Music Unlimited – from 2005 to 2008, but Rhapsody became the exclusive provider for

Yahoo music in February 2008. Amidst a controversy over non-transferable music purchased from
Music Unlimited, Yahoo announced in July that it would provide refunds or Rhapsody credits to
people affected by the closure.

"Yahoo is focused on attracting and engaging the largest online audience and connecting each
individual to the people and experiences that matter most to them," Jeff Dossett, senior vice president
of Yahoo's North America audience group, said in a statement.

67. Browsers Boost Security Features | Web Wars [Read Online]

With the phenomenal growth of ecommerce and online banking,

browser security is now a bigger issue than ever, and phenomena
such as phishing and malware are now becoming commonplace.
What was considered good security in 2000 is now totally
inadequate due to the constant game of cat and mouse played out
between malware writers and browser developers.

Thankfully all the main browsers now offer phishing alerts that tell you when you try to visit a
compromised website. The databases used are constantly updated and a high level of security is
offered. Some browsers, such as Firefox 3, also now come with inbuilt virus checking for
downloaded files, a trend the other browsers seem likely to follow.

Even so, a 2007 study showed that 20 per cent of UK PCs scanned with Nanoscan
(http://nanoscan.com) exhibited signs of either active, inactive or latent malware infections. This
means it’s still very important to ensure you have both a solid virus checker and an up-to-date
malware and spyware remover, on top of whatever security your browser offers, and many
commercial products are available, as well as the following freeware offerings:
• AVG Anti-Virus Free
• Spybot S&D

69. The Mouse Trap | Moral Story [Read Online]

A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and
his wife opening a package; what food might it contain? He was
aghast to discover that it was a mousetrap! Retreating to the
farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning, "There is a mouse
trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house."

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell you this is a
grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me; I cannot be bothered by it." The mouse
turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mouse trap in the house." "I am so very sorry Mr. Mouse,"
sympathized the pig, "but there is nothing I can do about it but pray; be assured that you are in my
prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow, who replied, "Like wow, Mr. Mouse, a mouse trap; am I in grave
danger, Duh?" So the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected to face the farmer's
mousetrap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a
mousetrap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she
did not see that it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's
wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital.

She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so
the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient. His wife's sickness
continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the
farmer butchered the pig. The farmer's wife did not get well, in fact, she died, and so many people
came for her funeral the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat. So the
next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember
that when the least of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

time, the “world’s first flying hotel. It’s an amazing piece of work, like a double-decker bus for the
skies. It’s the ultimate in luxury, with private entertainment systems and room service. Plus you get
extras like spa treatments, yoga classes, gaming and a tea garden. To give you some idea of it’s size,
check out the specs below.

Length: 42 m (137 ft), Height: 14m (45 ft), Maximum Takeoff Weight: 105850 kg (232,870 lb),
Maximum speed: 255 km/h (137 kt) (158 miles/h), speed: 237 km/h (127 kt) (147 miles/h), Original
Mi Range: 515 km (320 mi), Our augmented Mi Range - 1,030 km (640 mi). The inaugural is
scheduled for June 26th for an unknown price. If you have to ask, you can’t afford it.

This monster is a concept for a flying luxury hotel equipped with 18 rooms. As you can see from the
windows on the side, it is 4 story high. This is a distant cousin on the Russian Mil V-12, today's
biggest helicopter. The concept is interesting, but we're having a hard time to believe that this thing is
flying and that is really comfortable to travel in. Do you? That said, Hotelicopter (the company) has
announced that the first flight will happen on June 26th 2009. Let’s wait and see...

71. How To Identify Online Frauds | Internet Security [Read Online]

"Digitisation of elections in India is in its nascent stage right now.
There are 100 million first-time voters in the 18-24 age group, and
they are all most likely to be connected via the Internet and mobile
phone."

With Lok Sabha elections just over a month away, a lot of

institutional bodies have launched online campaigns to connect with
the young, literate and Internet-savvy generation.

But online initiatives have their downsides too. Creating awareness on security issues and setting in
place security tools right from the very beginning will go a long way in ensuring that we will be ready
to establish a secure online election campaign in the future. Going online means that users are more
exposed and vulnerable to security threats."
The Press Information Bureau has launched a micro site for the benefit of journalists covering the
general elections this year. VoteIndia.in helps voters make an informed choice by e-mailing them
information on various politicians' qualifications, work, track record and criminal background. The
site owners have also uploaded videos on Youtube. Election news will also come via microbloggers
on Twitter.com. Twitter was used by thousands to track and report on Barack Obama's progress as a
presidential candidate.
How can cyber criminals use these Web sites to cause security breaches? When a user logs on to a
Web site, he is prone to online fraud attacks such as:

Phishing: Here, criminals distribute false e-mails in the name of a legitimate company or institution
to acquire sensitive personal information, such as usernames, passwords, and credit card numbers.
Phishing is cost-effective for a fraudster to conduct with slim-to-none chances of being caught.

Pharming: This refers to a hacker's attempt to divert traffic from a legitimate Web site to a false site
in order to steal user information For example, an online banking customer clicking on a link in a
bogus e-mail which directs to a Web site set up to appear like the real bank's site.

www.bench3.com Page 83
bench3 April 2009

Trojans: Trojans can be used to assume control over the infected PC and can cause damage in a
number of ways; one of these would be for the Trojan to act as a Key Logging application. Key
Logging refers to the process of capturing and recording user keyboard strokes to obtain passwords or
other encryption keys. Given the sheer volume of users that go online, even if a small percentage of
them fall victim to scams, it would make scamming worth it for the criminal.

How can people judge if the site is an authentic one?

Fraudulent or malicious Web sites will change or re-direct to another Web site. Often, users stumble
upon malicious or duplicate fraudulent Web sites through something as basic as typos. There are Web
sites that exploit users' misspellings to siphon off traffic from the official Web site for commercial or
corrupt purposes.

Users should give as little information as possible. In case a Web site insists on information and can't
justify its request, leave the site immediately. Choose strong passwords and update them regularly
and clear the "cookies" from the hard disk for increased protection against potential hackers. Switch
on the anti-phishing feature of your browser - this will help you avoid most of the known fraudulent
Web sites.

72. Do You Need A Desktop Firewall? [Read Online]
A common question is whether or not desktop firewalls are really needed
if you’ve already got a firewall protecting the network. The answer is
that desktop firewalls can’t hurt and are essential when users connect to
the internet via gateways they have no control over. For example, when
they take notebooks out of the office and connect to the web via a home
or public Wifi network.

Unfortunately a desktop firewall can block legitimate traffic as well,

www.bench3.com Page 84
bench3 April 2009

leading to problems when new applications are installed. To fix this, temporarily turn the Windows
firewall off to see if it solves the problem. Then create an exception rule to allow the blocked packets
through. Developers are increasingly aware of the need to check for an active firewall and create
exceptions automatically, should they be required.
Desktop firewalls can cause problems with some applications, but exception rules are easy to apply

73. Tackling Violence in Society | A Safe And Pleasant Life [Read Online]
Tackling Violence in Society Suggest some effective measures to deal with the growing menace of
violence in Indian society.

Violence Vitiates Social Climate and Human Rights:

The irony of life has been that ‘the more we change, the more we remain the same’. If in the past
violence resulted from ignorance and irrational behaviour based on petty parochial prejudices, now it
emanates from ‘bad blood, blinkered biases and perceived wrongs’ that have no basis, either now or
in the past. It is both shocking and shameful that in the land of Buddha and Gandhi, the cult of
violence has made deep roots, not only in people’s psyche but also in their day-to-day dealings.
Knowing fully well that violence vitiates social climate and violates human rights, the scourge
continues to grow. No doubt, we live both in the best of times as well as in the worst of times.

State-Of-Art Technology For Unsafe And Unlpleasant Life:

If we have the state-of-art technology at our disposal to render life less boring and painful, we have
an easy access to arms and other means of violence to make life equally unsafe and unpleasant. It is a
matter of deep concern that the curse of violence is no longer, confined to criminals and anti-social
elements; it is very much evident among students in schools, colleges and universities that are
supposed to be nurseries of knowledge and civilisational values. In order to re-inculcate the spirit of
tolerance and understanding among those who easily lose self-control, the teachings of Gandhi can
work as balm to pacify the ruffled ego of the prospective violators of social norms and laws of the

www.bench3.com Page 85
bench3 April 2009

land. The time has come to re-discover Gandhi in our mental make-up and convince ourselves of the
relevance and reverence that Gandhi symbolised as the supreme symbol of non-violence, both in
thought and action.

Meditation and Yoga have also proved their efficacy in controlling one’s agitated nerves and dubious
desire to wreak vengeance. India is fortunate enough to have been the home of both meditation and
Yoga and there are examples aplenty to show how these twin gifts have worked wonders in
bestowing mental and physical health and harmony on those who practise them.

75. What Is Web Design? [Read Online]

web design has been a profession for over a
dozen years, yet nothing is known...

In the decade since the word "dot" became a part

of our everyday discourse many things have
changed. We've moved through a time when
people and organizations had an almost
indistinguishable face, to the world on the Web,
to the "gold rush" time when differentiation and
innovation (often by forgetting the business model) were all-important.

Today we understand that design, technology and business must all work seamlessly together to
enable people to participate in activities and achieve their goals in a networked world. Ok, "What is
Web Design?" In my view, web deisgn fulfills a need for the community as a compilation of issues,
process and practice in design for connected interactive experience and sets the stage for the
conversation about the effective integration of design with business and technology. Then, what is
web design for people who are not into business? Need Answer!!!

76. How the Sun God Can Heal Your illness? [Read Online]
All life on earth derives its sustenance from the
sun. Solar rays that are emitted from the sun helps
our bodies and plants to grow. So we can use the
Sun God to help cure us and to keep diseases and
infections away.

HERE IS HOW IT WORKS

The sun's light has seven colours ( VIBGYOR )
1. Violet, Indigo, Blue (Cold Spectrum)
2. Green (Neutral Spectrum)
3. Yellow, Orange, Red (Warm Spectrum)
I. To cure fever, accidental injuries we use cold colors - Blue,Violet or Indigo
II. To remove or prevent infections, we use neutral color – Green
III. To cure cold, cough, we use warm colors - Yellow, Orange, Red or Brown

MEDIUM
Water, granulated sugar or coconut oil can be turned into solar medicine by keeping them in different
color bottles and exposing to the sun's rays as follows:
I. Water takes only 4 to 6hours
II. Granulated sugar takes 4 to 6 weeks
III. Coconut oil also takes 4 to 6 weeks

METHOD
One can easily find Blue, Green and Brown color bottles anywhere. Wash the bottles and dry. Fill the
bottles with any one of the three mediums - water, granulated sugar or coconut oil up to 2/3rd the
bottle only. Close the lid tightly. Expose the bottles in the sun's rays for the stated period of time. The
longer the exposure the better it is. Sugar exposed in sun's rays for six months will be twice as strong
as a six-week-old medicine. One year will be four times stronger. The same is true of coconut oil.
Water, of course, should be used on the same day or on the very next day. Oil is for external

www.bench3.com Page 88
bench3 April 2009

application only. Sugar can be taken 3 times a day (two teaspoons for children and adults
respectively).

So, for example, fever can be treated by taking Blue bottle sugar twice a day or applying a few drops
of coconut oil to the parts of the body which are warm. For cold and coughs, you can apply a few
drops of Brown oil to nose, chest or neck and rub gently. You will find breathing quickly becoming
easier. For infection of any kind, drink green water all day long or use green sugar three times a day.

RESTRICTIONS
I. Do not use green color one hour before or after meal. Its potency will affect digestion.
II. Brown bottled sugar or water is not to be taken on an empty stomach.
Shake the sugar bottles daily while you are exposing them to the sun's rays so that heat of sun can
penetrate evenly.

RESULTS
Almost all chronic illness can be cured by the SOLAR COLOR THERAPHY. There are no adverse
side effects and the cure is fast and very effective. You can vary the dosage to suit your needs.

77. Making India Knowledge Society [Read Online]
Having maintained steady economic growth over the years, it is time to make India a knowledge
society / hub.

When the goal is to excel, expediency is ruled out; when the only course open is merit, mediocrity is
out of reckoning; and when the competition is cut-throat, compromise on quality is out of the
question. Making India a knowledge society is not a pipe dream but a reality, both actionable and
achievable. We have already taken the first step in this direction by establishing the ‘National
Knowledge Commission’.

www.bench3.com Page 89
bench3 April 2009

Since the objective of making India a knowledge hub is closely linked with the setting up of World
Class Universities and Institutions undertaking high ranking research, it is imperative that we focus
on right perceptions and correct practices, irrespective of the compulsions of electoral politics or
other petty considerations. The master plan of establishing World Class Universities may hit many a
roadblock unless and until the three key agencies—Human Resource Development Ministry,
University Grants Commission and National Knowledge Commission—agree on the need of allowing
the proposed universities to prosper and excel in pursuit of the highest standards of academic and
research achievements.

Since public finance is an integral constituent of universities worldwide, most of the new universities
shall need significant initial financial support from the government, without any political and
bureaucratic control or interference. Once it is admitted that the universities shall grow without any
covert or overt outside influence, and there will not be any automatic career advancement but through
open competition, the goals envisaged now will begin to appear after some years and India will be on
top as the fountain of knowledge.

We need intellectuals and original thinkers and for this to happen we must provide facilities to our
universities at par with world standards. Granting intellectual freedom to universities, Vice
Chancellors and faculty members is also the prerequisite of making India a knowledge hub.

78. Don’t Change The World | Moral Story [Read Online]

Once upon a time, there was a king who ruled a prosperous country. One day, he went for a
trip to some distant areas of his country. When he was back to his palace, he complained that his feet
were very painful, because it was the first time that he went for such a long trip, and the road that he
went through was very rough and stony. He then ordered his people to cover every road of the entire
country with leather.

Definitely, this would need thousands of cows’ skin, and would cost a huge amount of money. Then
one of his wise servants dared himself to tell the king, “Why do you have to spend that unnecessary

www.bench3.com Page 90
bench3 April 2009

amount of money? Why don’t you just cut a little piece of leather to cover your feet?” The king was
surprised, but he later agreed to his suggestion, to make a “shoe” for himself.

There is actually a valuable lesson of life in this story: to make this world a happy place to live, you
better change yourself - your heart; and not the world.

79. Preventing Corporate Scams | India [Read Online]
‘Corporate Scams’ not only bring a bad name to the country but also cause immense losses to small
investors.
How To Prevent Corporate Scams In India:
Business frauds are not new in India. Businessmen are known to go to great lengths to make money
through fair and foul means. What has shocked the country is the size and scale of ‘Satyam Scam’.
Over the years those at the helm of affairs of the company had been fudging accounts and yet almost
all our monitoring agencies remained blissfully unaware.

When the lid was removed from the ‘can of worms’ by the scamster himself, much damage had been
done to the corporate image, as well as to the small investors. Since the fraudsters in India have
proved better than the law enforcers, by design or default, it is time to sit up and think of ways and
means to prevent the occurrence of such scams in future. It is a well-known fact that frauds and scams
are committed by big business houses and corporations in the developed countries also. The only
difference is that in India the conviction rate of the guilty is abysmally low.

If the scamsters are handed down fast punishment, and that too in commensurate with the nature and
magnitude of the fraud, it would act as an effective deterrent for others. The investigative trial and
judgement procedure will have to be vastly improved so that the fraudsters do not succeed in
circumventing the law in their favour.

www.bench3.com Page 91
bench3 April 2009

Since scams of ‘high profile nature’ cannot take place without patronage and preferential treatment
from the right political quarters, it is in the fitness of things that the nasty nexus between the powerful
businesses and their political mentors is broken beyond repair. If the wrong-doer, however well-
connected he/she may be, knows that law would not spare him for his massive mischief, it is quite
possible that many scams having national and international ramifications may not take place. In the
wake of ‘some companies like Satyam’ over-extending or functioning in an unethical manner, there is
a crying need for stronger corporate governance than ever before. There must be clear principles of
accountability. An effective internal control mechanism to manage risks arising out of greed of those
at the top, should be introduced.

80. A Pond Full Of Milk | Moral Story [Read Online]

Once there was a king who told some of his workers to dig a pond. Once the pond was dug, the king
made an announcement to his people saying that one person from each household has to bring a glass
of milk during the night and pour it into the pond. So, the pond should be full of milk by the morning.
After receiving the order, everyone went home. One man prepared to take the milk during the night.
He thought that since everyone will bring milk, he could just hide a glass of water and pour inside the
pond. Because it will be dark at night, no one will notice. So he quickly went and poured the water in
the pond and came back. In the morning, the king came to visit the pond and to his surprise the pond
was only filled with water! What has happened is that everyone was thinking like the other man that
“I don't have to put the milk, someone else will do it.”
Moral: do not think that others will take care of it. Rather, it starts from you, if you don’t do it, no one
else will do it. So, change yourself and that will make the difference.
