Whoarewe?

TheYoungArchitectsWorldFederation(FMJA)isaFrenchassociationfoundedin 1996.Itcontributestoimplementingactionsinfavourofyoungarchitects.Itprovidesaplatformto coordinate,promote,stimulateandstrengthenactionsinitiatedbyitsmembersorbythebodies accreditedtotheAssociation,inparticular,toorganizeinternationalforumsforyoungarchitects.

TheInternationalcouncilofFrenchArchitectes(CIAF)istheofficialrepresentative ofFrancewithininternationalarchitecturalassociations,inparticulartheInternationalUnionof Architects(UIA).Itactivelyparticipatesintheworkofinternationalworkgroupsand,onthestrength ofitsexperienceandnetworks,regularlyorganizesworkshopsforyoungarchitectsandarchitecture students. Accordingly,itisquitenaturalthatthesetwoassociationscollaboratetoorganizeeventsandactions forarchitecturestudentsandyoungarchitects.

WhatisaForum?

TheForumsarestudyanddialogueopportunitiesforyoungprofessionals;architects,townplanners andlandscapearchitectswhodevelopproposalstogether. Theyenablearchitectsfromdifferenthorizonsandculturestomeet,tocomparetheirworkmethods andtobringanewandoriginalapproachtoarealissueidentifiedbyapublicsectorclientfroma municipality,city,agglomeration,groupofadjoiningmunicipalitiesorfromaregion. Thenumberofattendeesvariesaccordingtothescaleoftheproject.Participantsareorganizedin teamsof5architectsofwhichatleast1architectisnativetothecountrywheretheForumisheld. TheworkinglanguagesareFrenchandEnglish.

TheForumsareorganizedinthesummermonthsduring2weeks. TheForumsareorganizedbytheFMJAandCIAFinpartnershipwiththeprofessionalorganizationsof thehostcountry.Aclosecollaborationwiththeclientbeforetheeventdefinesathemepertinentto theForumandidentifiesallthenecessaryskillsforitssuccess. Onthestrengthofitsnetworks,theFMJAandCIAFteams,allocatedtoorganizetheForum,can engagetheexpertiseofspeakersandarchitectstoanimatetheForum. A2dayconferenceprecedestheForum.Itassemblesattendees,localrepresentativesand internationalspecialistschosenfortheirexpertise.Thiseventisopentothepublicandlocal inhabitantsareurgedtoparticipate.

Attheconclusionoftheconference,eacharchitectreceivesadatapackthatincludesallthereports andanalysesthatwereindispensabletotreattheissue.

WhocanparticipateinaForum?

Architects,townplannersandlandscapearchitectslessthanfortyyearsoldfrommembercountries oftheInternationalUnionofArchitects,whichrepresents124countries,areentitledtoparticipatein theForumsthatarealsoopentofinalyeararchitecturestudents. Subsequenttoacalltotheprofessionalorganizationsandschoolsofarchitectureofthe124member countries,theselectionofdelegatesismade.Itisbaseduponthecandidatescurriculumandhis/her experienceinregardtotheForumtheme.Theselectionisalsocarriedouttoensure,withinthe teams,abroadrepresentationofculturestoguaranteetherichnessandoriginalityofproposals.

WhoanimatestheForums?

TheFMJAhasatitsdispositionaninternationalnetworkofpracticingarchitectsandteachersto animatetheForums.Thenumberofspeakersdependsonthenumberofdelegates;thereisatleast1 leaderperteam,eachteamconsistsof5architects. DependingonthespecificissueoftheForum,theFMJAalsoengageinternationalandnational expertstointerveneduringtheForum. Allthesecontributionsarevoluntaryandbearwitnesstotheirpersonalcommitment. Moreover,theCIAFandFMJAdisposeoftheirownlogisticteamexperiencedintheorganizationof Forums.

Thelastevent:

FontRomeuForum,2031July2009
TheForumclientwastheCityofFontRomeuthataskedtheCIAFtoorganizeaForumand ArchitectureWeekinFontRomeu.TheForumthemewas"MountainEcoStation"and,inparticular, thedevelopmentofareturntracktothecitycentrefromhighaltitudeskiruns.25youngarchitect participated. JeanLouisDemelin,MayorofFontRomeuaddressingthedelegatesattheconclusionoftheForum: "IthankyouforyourtremendousimplicationinthiscrucialstudyforthefutureofFontRomeu. Difficulttogiveapreferencetooneofthesedifferentprojects.Allhadgoodreasontowinthevote. Allcontainedbrilliantideaswhichweshallstudyduringthedevelopmentoftheproject". QuestionedlateraboutthesubsequentoutcomeoftheForum,MrJeanLouisDemelinstated:"The CityCouncilwidelyconsultedthelocalpopulationbyexhibitingalltheprojectsduring6months,in ordertoconsultnotonlyresidentsbutalsosummerandwinterseasontourists.Thispermanent exhibitionenabledpeopletounderstandthephilosophyoftheprojectandespeciallyenabledlocal representativestosupportthisprojectwiththeadministrationthathadpreviouslyopposedtosucha 3

project.Itshouldberecalledthattheprojectislocatedwithinaclassifiedsiteandthesolutions proposedbytheForum,inparticular,convincedtheMinistryofEnvironmentthatgaveitsapprovalin principle.Themunicipalityisatthedevelopmentstageofapreciseplanofthereturntrack,withall theconsequencesoftheurbanizationthatwillencroachupontheclassifiedsite.Theideasofthe Forumhelpedtoproposealternativesolutions;thecreationofaretentionbasinnotonlyfortourism (artificialsnow)butalsoforagriculturalpurposes.Themunicipality,thatdrewideasfromallthe Forumproposals,decidedtodevelopastationwithoutcars.ItcreatedaSustainableDevelopment Department(withjobcreation).Theorganizationoftravelwithoutcars(horsedrawncarriages, sledges,etc.)isoneofthemajorpreoccupationsofthisDepartment.Stillwithsustainable developmentinmind,themunicipalitycreatedapublicdomainlanduseandlocaladvertising regulations.Itworksontheinclusionofthereturntrackprojectwithinthesustainabledevelopment planofthelocaltownplanningplanandthecreationofanecodistrictscheme.The1970sobjective tomakeskierscomeintothetowncentrehasfinallyenteredtheconstructionphase.Itgoeswithout sayingthatitwillbecarriedoutstagebystagegiventhelackofexperienceofthemunicipalityonthe subject.Themunicipalityhastotakeintoaccounttherequirementsandaspirationsof"newtourists" whoaskforareturntonature,tothevaluesofthelandinsummerandtothemountaininwinter,to ski. InconclusiontheYoungArchitectsForumwasanextraordinarymeanstoputontrackourEcoStation Project,inphasewiththeregionalparkcharterwhichstressesthevaluesofsustainabledevelopment withinourterritory".
