Reducing our educational system
Dear Editor: The words a pollster chooses to use will have a powerful effect on the outcome of the poll. For example, in the current CUSD budget discussions, you admittedly favor the option that will reduce the educational opportunities of Claremont children by more than 3 percent over the option of using district reserves to meet possible school district budget short-falls. In the COURIER poll you did not use the wording 3 percent reduction in the educational program; you substituted the phrase teacher furlough. Furlough, unlike the word reduction is actually quite a nice and positive word. It means a vacation. Your poll made no mention of the 3 percent reduction in educational opportunities for our children and it inferred that using the reserves would cost the taxpayer extra funds. In fact, neither option would cost the citizens of Claremont an additional penny. Your poll had two options, #1, send our teachers on vacation or #2, use (spend) current reserve money. You, of course, got the answer you wanted. Solving the districts problem at no cost while sending the teachers on a vacation undoubtedly seemed like a winwin situation to many poll takers. Finally, the CUSD maintains it is in a situation requiring it to either reduce our educational system or to use some of our educational reserves. It appears the district will opt for the former and reduce our educational system. My question then is, If avoiding a 3 percent reduction of our entire education system for the children of Claremont is not a valid reason for tapping district reserves, what would be?

Local man indicted for weapons smuggling

Claremont man has been indicted by the US Attorneys Office in Florida on charges of attempting to illegally smuggle weapons to Somalia.
Joseph OToole, 79, a retired Air Force Colonel, is accused of brokering a deal that would have sent hundreds of AK-47s to Somalia in violation of US arms export laws. Since 1992, a UN arms embargo has been in place against the African nation. According to the indictment, Mr. OToole allegedly conspired with Israeli national Chanoch Miller, 53, to export and transport the weapons by plane from the United States to Africa. Customs agents arrested Mr. OToole on Monday in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Mr. Miller was arrested on June 18 at Miami International Airport. Both men are charged with 7 counts of conspiracy to export defense articles without a license and money laundering. If convicted, Mr. OToole could face up to 55 years in prison and a fine of up to $1.5 million. Mr. Miller could face up to 75 years in prison and a fine of $2 million. These are very serious charges that threaten our national security, said Nicole Navas, Spokesperson for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Enforcing our nations export laws to ensure that sensitive

military technology and weapons do not end up in the wrong hands is a top priority at ICE. This should send a message to those who seek to jeopardize the security of the United States by willfully violating our customs laws. According to the indictment, Mr. OToole and Mr. Miller conspired to obtain up to 2000 AK-47s from Bosnia by using false end user certificates. The plan was uncovered when the mens contact for the deal turned out to be an undercover agent for the US Customs and Immigrations Enforcement Agency. The indictment states the men communicated through email and phone calls about payment and a flight plan for the weapons operation with the undercover agent beginning in April. In one email dated April 21, Mr. OToole allegedly wrote he had enough cargo for 100 flights if the first is successful. For his role in brokering the deal, Mr. OToole was to receive a $4100 commission. Mr. OToole was previously accused along with 2 other men of involvement in the Iran Contra scandal in 1989. Federal prosecutors charged him with trying to sell 3 C-130 military transports to Iran for $12 million each and 712 Stinger surface-to-air missiles to another undisclosed country.

According to a Los Angeles Times article dated September 21, 1991, the case against Mr. OToole was dropped due to lack of credibility of 2 customs agents involved in the deal. The other 2 men were acquitted of the charges in a jury trial in New York. Over the years, Mr. OToole has been active in local politics. In 1997, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the city council, earning a total of 2628 votes. He ended up in third place behind winners Suzan Smith and Paul Held. Since then, he has volunteered in campaigns for other city council candidates. Mr. OToole has been an outspoken critic of the citys proposed affordable housing project on Base Line Road that was abandoned in 2008 due to a lack of funding. He was a board member of the group Citizens for the American Dream that was formed to oppose the Base Line project. Following the projects failure, Mr. OToole applied to be on the citys Affordable Housing Task Force in 2008 but was not selected by the city council. He often attends city council meetings to speak on various issues affecting the city. His arraignment hearing is tentatively scheduled for July 9 in US District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Ms. Navas said.

he 76-year-old man who was killed in Tuesdays car crash in Upland was well connected in the community. Bill Blanchard, an Upland resident, died after his vehicle was struck during a high-speed police chase on Benson Avenue in Upland.

After the accident, the Reach Medical Helicopter based at Cable Airport took Mr. Blanchard to Arrowhead Medical Center. Due to the severity of his injuries, medical staff personnel were not able to save him. Mr. Blanchard worked in different positions at Cable Airport since 1978 and most recently served as Planning Director. He wrote the original Master Plan for the airport back in the 1980s and was working on an updated one. He also wrote grant applications for the airport. He will be sorely missed, said Bob Cable, President

Mr. Blanchard grew up in Claremont in the historic Gumby house built by Gumby inventor Arthur Clokey. He attended Webb School and went on to study music at Pomona College, graduating in 1955.

Friday, June 25 Two men making criminal threats using a metal pipe were arrested. Around 1:30 p.m., the Claremont residents approached a home on the 200 block of E. Arrow Higway and made contact with the homeowner. One of the men was carrying a metal pipe and threatened the homeowner if he did not return money owed to him. He told the homeowner he would smash the victims head in with the pipe. Police were called to the scene and located the men not far from the location. David Ellis, 56, and Brian Godsey, 44, were arrested for making the threats. Last week, police served an arrest warrant at the same home on suspicion that fraudulent activity was taking place at the residence. While police did make arrests in the case, the homeowner who was threatened was not connected to any fraudulent activity. *** Police located an abandoned vehicle that was stolen earlier that day from an employee at Ability First at 480 S. Indian Hill Boulevard. At 5:15 p.m., police were called regarding a suspicious vehicle blocking traffic on Elder Drive near Arrow Highway. Police found the abandoned vehicle parked in the street blocking traffic. Police later determined it was an unreported stolen vehicle and was returned to its owner. An Airsoft pistol was found in the

car and was also returned to its owner. *** A man who threatened another person with a samurai sword during a fight was arrested for public intoxication. Around 6 p.m., the 2 men got into a verbal altercation at a residence in the 300 block of West 12th Street. At one point, the suspect brought out a 2-foot samurai sword and pointed it at the other man. Police were called and contacted the victim who declined to seek prosecution in the case. The sword wielding man was located and arrested when it was discovered he was under the influence of alcohol in public. Police confiscated the sword and are still in its possession. Saturday, June 26 Police were called to Padua Hill Theater after a wedding patron allegedly pointed a gun at a security guard. Around 10:20 p.m., the security guard saw the suspect walking to his vehicle carrying what appeared to be a beer bottle. The security guard approached the man from behind and asked if he was carrying alcohol from the premise. According to the security guard, the 36year-old man from El Centro turned around and pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the security guard, warning him not to sneak up behind him and scare him like that. Noah Ghotbi was the first player to cross home plate from Lawrence Pfaffs double to deep left field. Pomona Ted Greene pitcher Steven Medinas wild pitch and a throwing error brought in Nathan Macias and Pfaff before Andrew Bernstein singled in Bryan Landgreen. After Macias RBI single increased Claremonts lead to 5-0 in the 2nd inning, Pomona Ted Greene put left fielder Adrian Garcia on the mound. But Garcia also struggled as Claremont went on to score 4 more runs in the 2nd highlighted by Nicholas Guzmans 2-run single to left field. I think when we lock the other team down, we have a chance to win. We had some good pitching and we are trying to keep the momentum going. Claremont used all 13 of its players in Wednesdays contest, including 3 pitchers. Starting pitcher Bryan Landgreen struck out 6 batters while allowing just one hit and walking 2 batters in 2 innings of work. Jonathan Ochoa took the mound in relief in the 3rd and 4th in-

Claremont recorded 10 of its 15 total outs through strikeouts. Weve been practicing well and we brought it to the field, Landgreen said. I have a lot of confidence going into the next game and I thought that we played really good. The District 20 Tournament semifinals between Claremont and San Dimas will take place this Thursday at Pomona Jaycees Community Park. Both teams offensive firepower will be on display as Claremont and San Dimas have combined for 60 runs in 4 games. Game time is 7 p.m. San Dimas is a tough team right now and we cant look past them, Coach Robles said. Against Pomona [Ted Greene], we were fortunate enough to get everybody in. CHS alum recognizes those who make a difference

laremont High School 2008 graduate Kyle Manis is still making his mark at his alma matter.
The soon-to-be junior at USCs Marshall School of Business is already leaving a legacy at CHS with the creation of the PACK (Persistence, Accountability, Charisma, Knowledge) Leadership award that made its debut at the CHS Awards event prior to this years commencement. The PACK Leadership Award comes with a $250 prize to be distributed equally to 2 winners. Mr. Manis funds the monetary prize himself. This stems from Jack Harper inspiring me to give back and be involved when I was at CHS, he said. I just felt that these people give up so much time and they need to be awarded. When I went to Claremont High School, leadership was important to me. Lettering in 4 sports and involved in the Associated Student Body, Mr. Manis was active on campus during his tenure at CHS. He was the ASB sophomore and junior class president and became ASB president during his senior year. CHS ASB Advisor Jack Harper worked with the 2008 graduate to make the PACK award a reality. He also brought Mr. Manis back to CHS to hold a 3-day workshop on leadership with current CHS students in ASB. I gave them a broad overview on what to expect, Mr. Manis said. We did a lot of team building, going from having a vision of the big picture to implementation and looking at people managementhow to motivate and work with others. CHS 2010 graduate TJ Frank credits Mr. Manis with being an inspiration to him during the 2 years both CHS alumni attended the school. TJ and fellow 2010 graduate Hunter Davis were the first recipients of the PACK Leadership Award this year.

COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff Claremont resident Kyle Manis, center, has created a new scholarship for Claremont High School seniors called the PACK Award for Leadership. The 20-yearold 2008 graduate of CHS created the award to give back to the community that he says has given so much to him. Behind Manis are this years recipients TJ Frank, left, and Hunter Davis.

As ASB president during the 2009-10 school year and member of the CHS boys volleyball team, TJs CHS experience had similarities to that of his predecessor. Me and Kyle [Manis] are good buddies and I look up to him, TJ said. To receive an award that he created is really special. Its pretty cool that he wants to give back to leaders on campus. Hes a pretty good guy. To me, thats the ultimate leaderthat even through he graduated 2 years ago, his effect is still there. It was clear the award humbled Hunter. The 2010 graduate said the award meant more due to Mr. Manis being one of his peers. When they called me up to get the award, I had no idea why I was on stage because I didnt know that I was receiving an award, Hunter said. And Kyle was up there to present the award. I was very impressed that he created an award and even though it wasnt a ton of money, what made it legit was that it was a guy who graduated just 2 years ago who did this. Mr. Manis plans to increase the monetary amount of the award as he progresses through college and eventually into his career. He is currently majoring in Business Administration with a focus on entrepreneurship and management. TJ said the PACK Leadership Award will help to give more recognition to CHS leaders both in the present and the future. I think when Kyle was president, he wasnt recognized nearly enough for what he did, TJ said. Claremont High School does recognize leaders but I feel that by the time I graduated, it was different. Leaders are recognized even more now.

Celebrate Claremont style

by Judy Wright

he first recorded Claremont July 4 celebrations were held at the Claremont Grammar (Sycamore) School. They were a good deal more serious than current celebrationspatriotic songs were sung, oratory was delivered, and The Declaration of Independence was read.

When the Pomona College Greek Theater in Blanchard Park (the wash), was completed in 1910, it became the center for the towns outdoor summer activities. So many community activities were held here that it was considered, in the minds of some, to be a city park. A portion of the July 4 celebration was also held at the colleges athletic field, which has a better location for the annual baseball game and for 3legged, sack, and relay races. The entire community was invited to bring picnic lunches and to participate in the activities. The 1911 attendance was reported at 300. Claremonts population in 1910 was 1114. After supper there were other activities. Speeches were often given about the Revolutionary War. Professors Bissell and Colcord led a community sing, and the reading of The Man Without a Country was common. But the highlight of the evenings activities during these years was when, as darkness came, Solena Savory, garbed as the goddess of liberty, was escorted to the stage of the theater artistically ornamented with flags. As the goddess of liberty enlightening the world, she recited The Declaration of Independence. While she was performing, her body was outlined with red fire and she made a beautiful statue. In the 1920s Claremont began to have a morning parade. Its route went through the Village and ended at the Greek Theater. By then, Claremont had about

2000 residents. Parade entries in the 1920s usually included the Volunteer Fire Department and their equipment, the Claremont Band, the Boy Scouts, the usual decorated bicycles, the city council, and Pomona College. Organizational floats started to appear in the 1940sprobably as a sign of patriotic support during World War II. Before 1955, when the food booths became part of the Claremont 4th, the town had a community picnic. In the early part of the 20th century, the picnics were held at Blanchard Park next to the Greek Theater. One Claremont picnic in 1924 was sponsored by US Senator Hiram Johnson who offered barbecued steak and coffee on the knoll. Following the lunch, came the special bull throwing oratory contest. The COURIER reported that Senator Johnson was an authority and has offered to act as judge. Street dances were also introduced during the 20s. These usually occurred on Yale Avenue between First and Second with a jazz orchestra on the sidewalk and a waxed street. The Depression depressed July 4 celebrations as did World War II. During these periods the celebrations became rather low keymainly family parties. For several years during the 1930s, even the formal speeches and flag ceremonies were discontinued. In 1946 a successful bond issue allowed the purchase of what we know as Memorial Park. The first

July 4 celebration was held there in 1948 and was advertised as an old-fashioned community July 4 celebration that will launch the Claremont Recreation Program. The primary activities on that day were games for all ages, a picnic supper, a pie eating contest, and a folk dance. From that time to the present, some portion of the July 4 celebration has been held at the park. The parade, as we know it, was not introduced until 1955. That year the celebration featured floats, a city council entry, the new fire department pumper and, of course, the gaily decorated bicycles. Although there have been many and varied city ordinances outlawing them, fireworks have usually been a part of the celebration. The city-sponsored fireworks display was largely the responsibility of Bob Frampton, with assistance from the Johnson family. A photographer by profession, a pyrotechnic engineer by avocation, Frampton allowed that during the early days of the citys fireworks display, he was even referred to as a pyromaniac. Bob started with the July 4 fireworks as a very young man. He and his friends would go around town and collect money for fireworks. Bob and his father would then set off the fireworks at the evening festivities. Fortunately, his father was Claremonts longtime fire chief. The fireworks displays were held in many locations: the grammar school, Indian Hill Mesa, the Greek Theater, the 1910 high school, Claremont Mens College and Pomona College athletic fields, and Oakmont School. July 4 gives us the opportunity to express our appreciation for this country and to examine how successful we have been in achieving the goals stated in the Declaration of Independence. Fireworks, parades, songs, oration, and food are all symbols of the celebration.

Thats my grandfather. Thats a typewriter.

World Cup considerations

by Mellissa Martnez

elson Mandela once said, If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart. Although its likely the Nobel Peace Prize winner intended larger societal goals like world peace and human equality, his quote finds ironic meaning on a smaller scale for his country in recent weeks.

LEX IN THE

The language includes terms like a ronaldinho, a no-look pass, and a pel, meaning bicycle-kick. The term filegenfanger useless goalkeeper comes from the German word for flycatcher while a nutmeg, passing the ball between the legs of an opponent comes from the English Cockney nutmegs, a slang term for legs. Although these terms may cause a chuckle, these young entrepreneurs are gleefully content as sales of the book continue to climb. Their book, Socceranto: Birth of a Language, is currently for sale. Precocious young adults are not the only ones taking language seriously this season. The South African Government has assembled a multilingual team to assist with this months activities. They have set up a special court equipped with over 200 language interpreters to deal with unlawful behavior and a 24-hour multilingual hotline for visitors who require medical or police attention. In fact, multilingualism is a requirement for each of the over 18,000 volunteers! Referees have also been forced to spend some time considering language diversity. Not only are obscene gestures not permitted, those players who think they can sneak a swear word past an unsuspecting ref have another thing coming. Many of the highly trained refs

South Africa, which boasts 11 official languages, is no stranger to language diversity. Adding to this remarkable multilingual melting pot, the current World Cup tournament brings 32 teams and hordes of global fans together and language has emerged as a major player in this years tournament. Among the competing teams, 18 official languages are represented a dream come true for language lovers. One can imagine walking down the street hearing Afrikaans, Zulu, English, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Urdu, French, Ndebele and others. This language goulash has created more than just a melodious environment. Two young fans have cashed in on the situation by creating a new language devoted to communication among soccer lovers. The internet is buzzing with news of these youngsters from Argentina and England who have meticulously designed a new language, called Socceranto. Using the man-made international language Esperanto as a base, they combined the six native languages represented by the seven nations that have won the World Cup in the past: Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French, German and English. They also added a variety of words and phrases taken from soccer jargon and famous players.

have taken a crash course in offensive foreign words. English seems to have taken the brunt of the scrutiny when it comes to the no profanity policy. According to a spokesperson for the Brazilian referees, English is the target language. He said, We cant do this in 11 different languages, but at least we can know the swear words in English. It should be noted that the simple act of swearing is no longer a cardable offense in the game. It is the egregious slanderous scream (usually recognizable in any language) that gets players in trouble. As for the game, there is still one language divide that separates us from the rest of the world. We Americans are firmly settled on the word soccer while the rest of the English-speaking world uses football. Ironically, the word soccer actually comes from England, not the United States. Football first emerged in England in the 1400s to describe the game of kicking a ball, which had been played in various forms since the time of the Greeks. By the late 1800s several forms of the game existed. The term association football was derived to distinguish the game from other forms such as Rugby football. Soccer emerged as a shortened form of association. Although soccer lost favor in England, the Americans picked it up to avoid confusion between its other popular game grid-iron football. By the mid 1900s, soccer had completely replaced the term football in the US. The soccer tournament raging in South Africa this month has seized the attention of fans and non-fans alike. Although the thrill of watching a goal is exciting and the enthusiasm of a close game is surely fun, there are some added bonuses to this World Cup for language lovers to savor...the infusion of idioms into a small space, new emerging forms of communication and a profound respect given to language.

New budget problems, same tired solutions

by Jeff Hammill

hese pages have given us many thoughtful commentaries on CUSDs current budget crisis. The articles by Mr. Weinberger, Ms. Gardner, and school board president Hilary LaConte have all well-articulated the difficulties we are currently facing. This is an unprecedented situation which calls for (to use a tortured phrase) thinking outside-the-box. It appears, however, that we are only thinking about the ballot box.

view point
the information I was provided as a school board candidate, there are approximately 1200 CUSD students who do not live within the boundaries of the school district. The argument for acceptance of the inter-district transfers is the average daily attendance money received from the state. 1200 students, however, requires a substantial amount of infrastructure to provide a quality education. A ratio of 20 students to one teacher means 60 classrooms. Even a ratio of 30 to one is 40 classrooms. Aside from the need for certificated staff, there are additional facility and administrative requirements. Acceptance of inter-district transfers has been sold as a money maker, but a detailed analysis needs to be conducted to determine whether or not this is truly the case. Also, while its flattering that so many families wish to avail themselves of a Claremont education, it is also worth noting that these families would not be sharing the cost of a parcel tax or bond. The second and third issues are somewhat related and I recognize may be heresy: has the district considered closure of school sites and the sale of excess district property? The closure of a particular school site would have immediate upfront costs in terms of transferring students to other schools, possible early retirement packages for some of the employees at the school sites,

Thus, I think were running headlong towards the same tired solutions. Talk of a new bond or parcel tax is growing louder. We should be perfectly clear on what another bond or parcel tax means: borrowing money and/or raising taxes to cover spending we cannot afford. In addition, it appears that the proposed bond or parcel tax is already being earmarked for a specific interest group. While I appreciate that substantial cuts have been made in the CUSD budget and commend the board for its courage in doing so, before the community is asked to pay more, particularly in these difficult recessionary times, further analysis of CUSDs current structure and operations is warranted. I believe there are three major issues which have not been discussed and need to, at least, be reviewed. First is the issue of inter-district transfers. Based on

and the cost of closing down the facility. This idea, however, may be the type of long-term restructuring that is required to manage the district in a more limited budgetary environment. Certainly, this is not the best time to contemplate the sale of property. That being said, by the time such a plan was implemented and the property actually listed for sale, one would hope the economic picture has brightened and there is additional interest in the property. There might even be ways for the school district to work cooperatively with the city, as the city is currently looking for a location for a police station and there will also continue to be additional housing needs within Claremont. We must look at these bigger long-term structural issues as a way to try to protect ourselves from ending up in this budget situation again. Whether the teachers end up taking no furlough days or 5 days really is not relevant to the long-term budget situation we face. We will be having the same discussion again next spring, when RIF notices must be issued. A bond or parcel tax does not resolve the situation, because it merely applies a Band-Aid to the current situation and allows difficult choices or restructuring to be avoided or put off into future years. Furlough days or not, this is not the time to rely on the same solutions. It is time to put aside reliance on the ballot box and find real long-term solutions outsideof-the box. Jeff Hammill is an attorney and former school board candidate. He and his family in Claremont.

WILLIAM BLANCHARD continued from page 3

After spending some time in the Army, Mr. Blanchard returned to the area and taught music and math at Chaffey College. In his free time, he composed music and was lead conductor of his band, Bill Blanchards Little Big Band, which performed at locations around the area. Mr. Blanchard developed his musical talent at an early age with the help of his father, William Blanchard, who was a Professor of Music at Pomona College from 1936 to 1971. His 100-year-old mother still lives in Claremont and ate lunch with her son every day. She found out about his involvement in the accident after he didnt show up for lunch on Tuesday.

Margaret Nelson, Bills younger sister, described him as a very active man with a wide variety of interests and abilities. He was an ideal big brother because he was a problem solver and always willing to help out in any way he could, Ms. Nelson said. He was very family-oriented and was always attending activities by his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 11 years Arlene, 5 children, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. A memorial service for Mr. Blanchard has not yet been scheduled.

Jose Obeso postal worker, early Padua Hills Theater employee, Amnesty volunteer
Claremont resident Jose Obeso died on June 28, 2010 at the age of 89. Born in Mexico City in 1920, Mr. Obeso came to the Los Angeles area in 1949 and eventually settled in Claremont, finding a variety of niches here that fulfilled his interests, passions and creative abilities. He was all Claremont, said his daughter, Maryann Sled. This is where he came and this is where he stayed. While still in Mexico, Mr. Obeso was in his second year of law school when his father died, and it was financially necessary to curtail his studies. He graduated with an accounting degree and went to work for an import-export business. Just before he turned 30, he decided to come to the Los Angeles area to learn English. To support himself, he went to work at the Padua Hills Theater and Dining Room as a busboy. He soon became manager of the Mexican imports shop located at the theater. Mr. Obeso also wrote plays for the Padua Hills performers, occasionally performing in the productions himself. Most 1955 was with the US Postal Service in Claremont where he worked until his retirement. In addition to employment with the post office, he also worked as a dinner host at Griswolds Indian Hill Restaurant. At the time, it was the only really nice dining establishment around, said Mrs. Sled. As a child, I thought it was a 5-star restaurant. Mr. Obeso was also a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church where he helped establish the annual Las Posadas dinner-dance. In the summer of 1966, he served as the vice president of the city of Claremonts Sister City Program with Guanajuato, Mexico, which sponsored the visit of 20 Guanajuato school children to Claremont. It was a memorable event for the schoolchildren and host families alike, noted Mr. Obesos family. These were all childrenall good studentswho would never, in a million years, afford to have an opportunity like this, said Mrs. Sled. I remember when all the children and the host families went to Disneyland. It was something phenomenal that they would never have seen and that they would remember for the rest of their lives. That my father could help these children have a dream that they would remember forever, something he never had as a child, this meant something to him. After the passing of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, Mr. Obeso volunteered with Amnesty International and assisted countless individuals with the filing of paperwork to become US citizens. For his dedicated service, he received an award. Mr. Obeso is survived by his wife Estela Obeso; his son, Carlos Obeso of Las Vegas, Nevada; his daughter and son-inlaw, Maryann and Ron Sled of Brea; his son, Joe Obeso, Jr., and his fiance, Gail Beckham of Alta Loma; and his 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rita, and son, Bill. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 5, 2010 at Todd Memorial Chapel, Claremont.

of his plays revolved around various aspects of Mexican culture and folklore, and it was not uncommon for him to play a villain in one of his own melodramas. In 1951, Mr. Obeso married his assistant at the Padua Hills shop, Estela Alba, and decided that Claremont was where he wanted to stay. His first job after becoming a citizen in
