Textbook/ Reference Materials 1. Management Information System: James A. OBrien, and George M. Marakas, 10th Edition, McGraw-Hill Irwin Introduction: Welcome to MIS 205. This course deals with the design of management information system and specific aspects of management control. The course describes how students can learn the technology with real business situation. Different information level of the business individuals or groups, information components and information development are also described in the course. Course objectives: At the end of the course, the students should be able to: Appreciate the increasing importance of information technology (IT) and how it is changing the role of the business manager. Understand what strategic information systems are and apply a framework to help identify strategic uses of IT. Compare the fundamental types of information systems and how they can be used to provide real business benefit. Explore new technologies and issues affecting the business world. Apply a business systems approach in analyzing the role of information systems in organizations. Describe the process used in developing information systems and the concepts of information engineering and business process reengineering. Analyze the skills needed for IT professionals. To identify the main telecommunication applications for supporting electronic commerce and electronic business. To understand how the Internet can be used for electronic commerce. Distribution of Marks: Class performance + Attendance : 10% Project Presentation : 10% Term Project Proposal : 5% Term Project : 10% Midterm Exams (I+II) : 40% Final Exam : 25% _____________________________________ Total : 100% Class Performance and Attendance Every student is expected to attend every class. However just attending the class will not earn class performance points. Students have to actively participate during discussion sessions to earn participation points. Students are also required to finish all in class assignments to earn class performance points. Bringing BOOK in the class is a MUST . Negative marking will be applied for not bringing books in the class. Exams Three examinations are required. The purpose is to give the students an opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of the course material. These exams consist of MCQs (multiple choice question), short and essay type questions. We will discuss the exam process throughout the classes. Term Project, Presentation, and Proposal: Each student will write a term paper on assigned topics. This is strictly an individual research paper and the research should include approximately at least 3 references/articles about the topic. This paper should be at least 5 pages long, double spaced typed in a word processor. This paper should provide the literature point of view as well as your assessment of that point of view. Research papers must include the bibliography of sources. During the last two sessions prior to the Final Exam, students will be asked to present their research to the class. Maximum of 5 minutes is allowed for each presentation. A minimum one paragraph proposal outlining the topic to be used for the research paper and potential sources of information must be submitted. Note: There will be NO make up for missed quiz. Inability to attend the final exam will result in a grade of zero for that particular exam. To get an incomplete grade, students must complete all assignment except the final exam. For all other issues NSU standard policy will be followed. -Nawaz Ameen
