Year of Faith: Catechism Corner

Without the help of grace, men would not know how to discern the often narrow path between the cowardice which gives in to evil, and the violence which under the illusion of fighting evil only makes it worse. This is the path of charity, that is, of the love of God and of neighbor. Charity is the greatest social commandment. It respects others and their rights. It requires the practice of justice, and it alone makes us capable of it. Charity inspires a life of self-giving: Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it. (CCC, n. 1889)

Our congratulations to Frank Ostrowski, Dick Clish and Tony O'Connor who on June 13th obtained Frist Degree status in the Knights of Columbus at Christ the King Council 11027. Anyone interested in joining or knowing someone who would like to join the Knights of Columbus at Christ the King please contact Ed Schumann at (630)627-8213.

MASS CHALLENGE Summer Faith Challenge-Week 3 June 23, 2013 GOSPEL LK 9:18-24
Question of the Week Adult: How do you wear Christ? Youth: How would you describe Jesus to himself? Children: What special qualities do you have that make you a follower of Jesus? Activity of the Week Read Act of Hope together as a family. Discuss the meaning of each line of the prayer, and define words that need an explanation. If possible, memorize the prayer and repeat it during the week as a family. Discuss ways we die to ourselves. When we let our will die to Gods perfect will, isnt it always much better than we thought? How do we know Gods will? Do we depend on Scripture, Tradition, and the Sacraments to define our boundaries? How are these more reliable than our feelings? Reenact a Baptism with a doll. Discuss how submersion or sprinkling is symbolic of dying to ourselves and rising to a new life. Describe how water cleanses and refreshes and brings peaceful contentment to our outlook.

Making Sense Out of Suffering

We all experience suffering at some time in our lives. Our tribulations range from small disappointments to serious tragedies. Listen as scripture scholar and lay theologian, Dr. Scott Hahn, makes sense out of suffering by drawing from the wisdom and insight of God's Word. He helps us find the meaning of our suffering by showing us how to unite it to the suffering of Christ on the Cross.

One day we are all going to face suffering in one form or another. To have this spiritual knowledge will make that journey endurable. Jay - Cincinnati, OH

Were You Married in the Catholic Church? Eucharistic Holy Hour for Life, Marriage and Religious Freedom
Join us for a Eucharistic Holy Hour for Life, Marriage and Religious Freedom the last Sunday of every month throughout the Year Of Faith at 3 pm at St. Petronille Church in Glen Ellyn. There will be adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, readings and a short homily, and benediction. All are welcome to join our voices and hearts in prayer before the Eucharistic Lord. Upcoming dates are June 30, July 28, August 25, September 29, October 27 and November 24. Feel free to contact Joe or Margee Simeo at 630-469-1409 for details. Catholic Church law ordinarily requires baptized Roman Catholics to marry before a priest or deacon. Unless they requested and received a dispensation from canonical form, Catholics who exchange marriage vows in the presence of only ministers from other religious traditions or authorized civic officials are not considered validly married in the eyes of the Catholic Church. Couples may seek to have their union officially recognized by the Church. In technical Church terms, this is known as convalidation of a marriage. In 1981, Pope John Paul II issued an apostolic exhortation called On the Family. Among many things, this document outlines a procedure for pastors and pastoral leaders to assist families about convalidation ceremonies. The first step for the couple is to meet with the Pastor, Deacon or Pastoral Associate for a personal meeting. Each situation is unique and requires special attention. Please call Fr Peter, or Deacon Peter or Frank, at 630-629-1717. You may also call Eileen, the Pastoral Associate at 630-396-6076.

There are no distinctions or divisions; we all belong to Christ (Galatians 3:26-29).

Why a Fortnight in 2013? The second annual Fortnight for Freedom will take place from June 21 to July 4, and will consist of national and local efforts to educate Americans on challenges to religious liberty both at home and abroad. The Fortnight for Freedom in 2013 emphasizes the need for conscience protection as the August 1, 2013 deadline for religious organizations to comply with the HHS mandate approaches, as well as religious freedom concerns in other areas, such as immigration, adoption, and humanitarian services. Focus on faith and marriage in the face of the potential Supreme Court rulings during this time are also of concern. For more information go to : http://www.usccb.org/issuesand-action/religious-liberty/fortnight-for-freedom/fortnight-freedom-prayer-resources.cfm Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcomefor the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after usthis great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Good News! Important! Good News! Important! Good News! Important!

Dear Parishioners, Academy Families and Parish Friends, We are very excited to prepare for the installation of a Parish playground! This has been a dream come true! It will be an inviting place for children to play and families to gather! A beautiful Little Tikes Commercial grade climber will be a reality soon! The cost of the playground is $18,900. Please consider making a donation. We hope that your generosity will take care of the total cost-we are not asking the church directly to give us funds for this project. We are asking parishioners, academy families, private donors, and friends to help us now! Please use the envelope in the bulletin and make a check payable to: Christ the King with a memo for playground donation. You may also drop off a check at the school Monday thru Friday 8am-noon during the month of June or mail a donation to the school or church. We will be taking donations for the next couple of months but hope our goal of covering the cost will be taken care of this month. Naming rights will be given for a donation of $10,000 or more with consultation with Fr. Peter Jarosz, Javier Aguilera, and Jill Placey. Please clearly mark your donation for the playground. We appreciate all your support! This is an important project to enhance what we offer to our children at Christ the King and to be used by all parish families. Thank you in advance for your donation. God bless you and wish you a happy and safe summer! Javier Aguilera, and Jill Placey

Ministers of Care are Needed
Ministers of Care are needed to bring Holy Communion to the Catholic patients at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. The census of the hospital includes a high percentage of Catholics every day of the week. Good Samaritan Hospital is very welcoming and appreciative of our Catholic Eucharistic Ministry. This work of mercy serves others as well as enriching the volunteer in a deep spiritual way. This is a ministry in which one can serve often or occasionally, as substitutes are also needed. Ministers of Care are given on-site ministry training by Chaplain Laura Williams and volunteer orientation specifically for Good Samaritan by the volunteer services office. Free flu shots and TB tests are provided by the hospital as well as other perks. Good Samaritan works together with the Diocese of Joliet to provide the best training for Ministers of Care. Sr. Jane Schlosser at the Carmelite Retreat in Darien offers the initial training periodically throughout the year. Your fee for this training will be reimbursed by Good Samaritan Hospital. If you are interested in learning more about this ministry please call Chaplain Laura Williams at 630-2751473.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In todays Gospel Jesus tells his disciples that if they wish to follow him they must deny themselves and take up his cross daily. In Jesus time the cross was not something nice or cool that one could hang on the wall or around ones neck. It was an instrument of torture and execution. His point: We are to lay down our lives and let him take control. Good stewards hand over their lives to Jesus no matter the cost. They realize that all they take with them into the next life is their relationship with Christ Jesus. What are we pursuing?
