For Information about the

Sacrament of Baptism
Baptismal Preparation for parents and godparents: 7 8:30 pm the last Monday of the month. Call for Reservations. Baptisms are usually the first Sunday of the month.

Anointing of the Sick

Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lords special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!

Sacraments of Reconciliation and first Eucharist

Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or St. Rita Elementary School.

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One

Please call us at 355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest, sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

Sacrament of Matrimony
Contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament!

Sacrament of Confirmation

A two-year program for freshman/sophomore age teens. Apply through the Office of Religious Education.

NOTE: Adult applicants for the sacraments should contact the Parish Office.

PASTORS CORNER
Dear Parishioners,
In todays gospel passage from St. Luke, Jesus declares:

If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself

For many years now, I have parenthetically added the observation (that is, a healthy self) that is to say, then: not a scrupulous self, not a narcissistic self, not any kind of sick or deranged self. Makes sense when you think about it, doesnt it? If ones life has been all but erased by neglect or abuse by another or others, denying self will most render that person even worse off; such a person will most likely crumble under the weight of self-denial. Someone, for instance, who needs to play the victim, is just going to get that addiction fed by self-denial and feed the fire of Oh, look how I suffer! Jesus on the cross, in sharp contrast, was not about that, but was rather the suffering servant, taking upon himself the sins of us all, and with full confidence of his Fathers love, able to say to another,

This day you will be with me in paradise.

Growing up, some of us may have had the benefit of a family more functional than dysfunctional. On top of that, we may have had the blessing of good rolemodeling and wholesome, well-balanced, faith-filled mentoring. Now, more likely, this would be a person who could effectively take up his or her cross and follow. I might add that scripture seems to bear out that none of the apostles, with perhaps the exception of John, was healthy enough spiritually to take up his cross prior to Pentecost. It is Gods own Holy Spirit that bestowed the gifts needed to become spiritually healthy, fortified apostles. It was only spiritually healthy, confident, wiser, and more balanced apostles (though not perfectly), that were ready to take the Good News to all corners of the earth. In the Gospel today, Peter makes bold to profess that Jesus is The Christ of God. How about us? As a parent, as a friend, as clergy or minister, as just a new acquaintance, how do we come across as someone wanting to give witness to our faith? Are we taken seriously? Are we just perceived as sanctimonious or, maybe, just downright annoying? Some people seem to be able to naturally attract others to faith. Why is that? I would wager that those who naturally attract are those most comfortable in their own skin. They are people who are probably at peace with themselves in the knowledge of Gods love and mercyand of the assurance of heaven. They have healthy selves. I believe that the parent who will most effectively influence a son or daughter who has wandered from the faith is the one who has a certain calm and peace about him or herself; in other words, parents whose lives make obvious the joy and advantage of belonging to and participating in a faith community are the most likely to communicate the value. Even if we do not see immediate results, this is the type of modeling and mentoring that can pay off long after we are gone. And thats what we want. Isnt it? Msgr. Richard

Theresa Costanzo ym@st-rita.org Teach children to protect themselves at home aloneWe consider our homes to be safe places. But being home alone can pose risks for a pre-teen or teenager. Here are a few tips to teach them that will help keep them safe when you are not with them at home: 1. Never answer the door if alone; 2. Do not invite anyone in the house, even a friend without the permission of a parent or babysitter; 3. Dont tell anyone on the phone that your parents are not home. Instead tell them your parents cant come to the phone right now and offer to take a message; 4. Use extreme caution when on the internet. Do not give out personal information or reveal the fact that you are alone. 5. Keep emergency numbers in a visible location. Office of Safeguard the Children jvienna@la-archdiocese.org

Meetings, Ministry & Special Events
Much good news for St. Rita Parish!
Many thanks to all who took part in our recent Feasibility Study In-Pew Survey. The survey results overwhelmingly support proceeding with a fund raising campaign. CCS, the company who was conducting the survey, has advised that while the parish needs to have more information about individual components of the campaign, St. Rita Parish is very much in favor of beginning this effort. It is a sign of our parishs growing sense of stewardship that we accept and embrace our responsibility to provide for a secure future for St. Rita Parish and School.

At the same time, we are happy to announce that the Archdiocese has secured for St. Rita Parish a residence for our priests. Located on Baldwin just across from St. Rita School, this property will enhance our ability to provide a comfortable living environment for Fr. Richard and any other priest who serves our parish community. The close proximity of this property offered an opportunity that advisors told us was too good to not take action, even though we had not expected to make a move this soon. The purchase also will allow us to use the former rectory, the building on Alegria, for offices and small meeting space for parish administration and ministries. We thank the office of Real Estate of the Los Angeles Archdiocese for their efforts on our behalf. Mary Lou Butler
