Textbook and Materials : ECE 412 Course Notes a. Other Supplemental Materials : None 4. Specific Course Information : a. Brief description of the content of the course (Course Catalog Description) : Operating characteristics of power semiconductor devices such as Bipolar Junction Transistors, IGBTs, MOSFETs and Thyristors. Fundamentals of power converter circuits including dc/dc converters, phase controlled ac/dc rectifiers and dc/ac inverters. Practical issues in the design and operation of converters. Course available on videotape. b. Pre-requisites or Co-requisites : ECE 342 or equiv or cons inst c. This is a Selected Elective course. 5. Specific Goals for the Course : a. Course Outcomes : 1. Develop and quantify common performance objectives for power electronic circuits, such as efficiency, power factor, etc. 2. Develop simple dc-dc power electronic converter topologies to meet certain functional specifications 3. Analyze dc-dc power electronic converter operation to develop design guidelines for choice of switching devices and reactive elements 4. Identify and use switching device and reactive component performance characteristics to apply them appropriately in dc-dc power electronic circuits 5. Complete preliminary design of inductors and transformers 6. Describe steady state and dynamic behavior of dc-dc power electronic converters using equivalent circuits, matrix models and small signal transfer functions 7. Design simple closed loop regulators for dc-dc power electronic converters to meet functional objectives 8. Identify and synthesize general circuit topologies to realize inverters and rectifiers for single phase and three phase applications 9. Describe operation of diode and SCR based power electronic circuits 10. Use systematic problem solving techniques to partition complex problems 11. Use simplifying assumptions to approach solutions to ill-posed design problems 12. Present solutions to technical problems effectively 13. Use mathematical analysis software tools to solve engineering design problems b. ABET Student Learning Outcomes : (a) Ability to apply mathematics, science and engineering principles.
