Restore Active Desktop Recovery Fix

Rights Reserved. Magazine Premium created by Themes by Active desktop recovery is one of those errors you wish never existed. Its not a showstopper but definitely annoying. Ive run across this issue various times throughout computer tech career. Im not sure what causes this error but it could be virus or spyware related. It could also be one of the weird Microsoft errors that happens just because its a Microsoft product (you know exactly what Im talking bavotasan.com. about). Normally I would tell you to reboot your computer and try again. Chances are, youve already restarted your computer many times and thats how you got here. Below are four different fixes that might help you restore active desktop. You will need to restart your computer after each fix and see if it resolves your active desktop recovery error. Please comment whether it resolved your computer issue or not!

Active Desktop Recovery

Solution #1
1. This is by far the easiest fix if it works! 2. Click the Restore my Active Desktop button.

3. Reboot computer

Solution #2
This is probably the easiest fix. Copy and paste the below in notepad and save as fix.vbs on your desktop. Run the file and reboot your computer! HKEY_CURRENT_USER = &H80000001 strComputer = . Set objReg = GetObject(winmgmts:\\ & strComputer & \root\default:StdRegProv) strKeyPath = Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components strValue = 0 ValueName = DeskHtmlVersion objReg.SetDWORDValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, ValueName, strValue

Solution #3
1. Go to Run, type regedit and hit enter 2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet 3. Select the value DeskHtmlVersion 4. Select the Decimal radial button

Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components

5. Change the value of 272 to 0 6. Most of the time it might take a few seconds for your background to appear and other timesyou might need to restart your computer.

Solution #4
1. 2. 3. 4. Open an explorer window or My Computer Tools Folder Options View

5. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files 6. Now do a search for desktop.httit should be on your C: normally 7. Delete any desktop.htt files you find (there could be more than one depending on how many user profiles are on the machine) They should be located in Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer 8. Close all windows you have open 9. Now reboot your PC..Windows will recreate desktop.htt for you and it should work!

1. jessie on January 19, 2008 at 1:52 am as a Windows user myself, i encounter problems like this once in a while. and oh, man its so frustrating when this problem occurs. this is perhaps the best advantage of Linux over Windows. in Linux, script errors and virus attacks seldom happen. in fact, i havent encountered one.

2. TheOfficeCubicle on January 19, 2008 at 10:27 am Hi Jessiethanks for stopping by! Thats what I hear about Linux from others as well. I have never used linux before and Id like to start, but I dont know where to begin.

3. ziyembe moyo on March 13, 2008 at 9:40 pm hi, one thing ive noticed is that this problem mostly occurs on users who have just installed Internet Explorer 7. Personally i think the two are linked.

4. James Hill on April 4, 2008 at 3:53 am Hi I have same problem and followed your instructions to get rid of the active desktop recovery programme and all fine up to No 6 now search for desktop.htt - It should be on your C: normally and I cannot locate C; Please can you help me

6. TheOfficeCubicle on April 28, 2008 at 11:29 am To James Hill Im not sureI am not a tech support specialist.I just post issues that I come across and how I fixed them. If my fix doesnt work for you..then theres nothing else I can do for you.

7. TheOfficeCubicle on April 28, 2008 at 11:30 am To Jason Sounds like spyware to me.I suggest calling a local tech support specialist and pose them the question. I just post issues that I come across and how I fixed them. If my fix doesnt work for you..then theres nothing else I can do for you.

This did not work for me and my other issue is that when this all happened it took off all the liks on my start menu. I dont have a run link anymore. Does anyone know how else I could try to fix this issue. I may be beyond fixing it myself and have to bring it to a PC repair man. Thanks for any suggestions Denise

15. TheOfficeCubicle on June 5, 2008 at 6:15 am Betty, Go to Start then Run in the box.type regedit and hit Ok thats how you access regedit I would be very careful using it if I were you. If something were to be deleted that shouldnt be deleted, youre computer might not properly work anymore. Just Google it and do some research.

16. Betty Voldrich on June 5, 2008 at 9:02 am Thanks for the warning about REGEDIT, Ive tried everything on google, about ACTIVE DESKTOP RECOVERY, To no avail, Ill keep checking. Betty V.

19. Pappionme on June 5, 2008 at 10:26 pm Maria I have the same problem. i have been trying everything i know to solve the problem. Originally i thought i had 2 desktop. and i was trying to find out how to just make it one. Because when i turn on the computer while its booting up, i see the desktop with its background, the task bar at the bottom with the necessary buttons, the only thing i dont see are the icons i have on the desktop. then i get this other desktop screen comes up with all the icons and a white screen telling me to restore active desktop recovery. i just tried the first method, nothing happens, i tried the regedit method. i dont know what to say, i still have the 2 desktop screens, the first is the same as i describe earlier and the second screen is blue with only the icons in the background. can you help me. ive tried everything.

20. Pappionme on June 5, 2008 at 10:44 pm I wish there was a way that i can show you what i mean, if its possible i can record on my digital camera how the computer boot up and email it to you. that way you can see what im trying to describe. Pappionme

57. Ben on January 12, 2009 at 10:53 pm I have tried everything on here and nothing works what else should I try.

58. don on January 13, 2009 at 7:19 am Well, after trying to delete desktop.htt, and making the suggested changes to the registry (neither of which worked for me), I installed and ran Windows Defender it found 2 severe risks, removed them both, an volia, problem solved!

59. ELECTRIX on January 15, 2009 at 3:35 am change registry key to 0 instead 272 look like solve my problem but the problem appear again on the next boot, so i have to change DeskHtmlVersion key again again and again everytime my computer run. So i created small program to set DeskHtmlVersion to Zero Decimal and you must make it run every time my computer start and make DeskHtmlVersion keep to Zero Value. I upload this file to rapidshare so download it guys http://rapidshare.com/files/183577437/DeskHtmlVersionToZero.rar.html just follow this step : 1. Download and extrak the arcive, you will see DeskHtmlVersionToZero.exe and you have to make it to run on every time computer start, so follow next step. 2. Copy DeskHtmlVersionToZero.exe to C:\WINDOWS\system32\ 3. Type regedit on StartMenu > RUN 4. Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run 5. Create String Key, give it name DeskHtmlVersionToZero 6. Fill The Value with C:\WINDOWS\system32\DeskHtmlVersionToZero.exe 7. Restart Computer. 8. To Check it, type msconfig on StartMenu > RUN, goto startup tab, you will see DeskHtmlVersionToZero on your startup program. 9. And Check that Your DeskHtmlVersion Keep in Zero Value. If u like it please give me comments

101. scaretoreboot on July 21, 2009 at 1:05 pm This problem is your worse freakin nightmare. Microsoft has to know there is a problem so why dont they fix it? I had to combine all the remedies suggested here to reboot successfully. No single remedy suggested here actually worked on its own. Ive got two successful reboots now and am scared to press my luck with a third. Yall please pray for me cause this is making me pull my hair out. Ill never use IE again.

112. Betty on November 7, 2009 at 1:35 pm Yes fix # 2 worked for me ,,, took me a while to figure out that HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components once you find HKEY_CURRENT_USER you click on it,, and scroll until you see the word Software, click on it and scroll and find the word Microsoft ,, just keep doing that until you get to the last word Components once you click on it then look to the box to your right and just follow from there , I think that is why other people were having problems getting it, Thanks ever so much for the help

113. Azumi Shinuhara on November 9, 2009 at 11:58 pm thanks a lot it really helped me fixing the trouble. FIX #2 worked.

137. Moe on July 21, 2012 at 10:25 am Solution number 3 fixed the issue. This error keeps happening time and again. The computer is an old one that runs windows xp pro with SP3. To make matters worse the computer is in another country so I have to remote it every time. Thanks for the solution. If you have any idea why it might happen let me know. The computer does not get used for anything but e-mail and skype calls and a little web surfing.
