The Vincent Thomas Bridge is a 1,500-foot long suspension bridge crossing the Los Angeles Harbor linking San Pedro, California with Terminal Island. Prior to the bridges construction in 1963, the Terminal Island Ferry transported people and cars to Terminal Island. The Ferry building was a working ferry terminal from 1941 to 1963 and currently houses the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. The bridge is named after California Assemblyman Vincent Thomas of San Pedro. FT. MacARTHUR In 1888, the War Department took control of a tract of land next to the San Pedro bay, and added to it in 1897 and 1910. This became Fort MacArthur in 1914, and was a coastal defense site for many years, which also included a Nike missile site in the White Point area. In 1978, the Secretary of the Interior transferred ownership of the White Point U.S. naval reservation to the City of Los Angeles to be used for recreational purposes.

KOREAN BELL The Korean Bell of Friendship is a massive bronze bell housed in a stone pavilion in Angels Gate Park, in the San Pedro district of Los Angeles, California. It is located at the corner of Gaffey and 37th Streets. The bell was donated by the Republic of Korea to the people of Los Angeles, California to celebrate the bicentennial of the United States, to honor American veterans of the Korean War, and to symbolize friendship between the two nations. It was dedicated on October 3, 1976. POINT FERMIN LIGHTHOUSE Built in 1874 in the Stick Style Victorian style, the Point Fermin Lighthouse was the first navigational light into the San Pedro Bay. Phineas Banning, proposed construction of the lighthouse in 1854 however land disputes delayed its construction until 1874. On December 7th, 1941, Pearl Harbor was bombed and the coast was blacked out for fear of being a beacon to enemy ships and planes, that included turning off the lighthouse beacon. Sadly, the light was never to be lit again. THE MULLER HOUSE Steeped in history the Muller House was originally located at 129 Front Street in the Nob Hill neighborhood of San Pedro California and moved when Front Street was widened. The colonial Revival style house was built for the parents

Everyone is asking where the inventory is. We are still looking, jokes Ed Kaminsky of Shorewood Realtors, one of the top real estate agents in the South Bay.Kaminsky says that increased demand creates instant appreciation in the beach cities at the fastest pace hes seen in the entire 25 years hes been an agent. He has other observations, as well. One thing you will notice is the increase of new development projects around town, he says. Manhattan Beach is starting to become a second home market. Some of these buyers are actually local and they may already own a home in the Hill Section or Tree Section but they want a home on The Strand. Other buyers are permanent residents in Los Angeles or places like Scottsdale and The Silicon Valley with the best climate in the world, the greatest beaches, the best school systems and plenty of business opportunities, the South Bay continues to be a major draw. After transitioning into real estate from a job selling jewelry, Kaminsky found success within his first year. It took me six months to earn my first client, he says, but after that I went on a roll and sold 17 houses my first year in the business. The market has changed considerably since the late 1980s. Todays pace is lightning-fast and clients demand instant answers, 24/7 access, and they are armed with more information than ever so you have to stay ahead of the curve to provide valuable insight and skills in todays real estate market. Kaminsky eventually launched SportStar Relocation, a company that is dedicated to the relocation needs of athletes and anything related to their real estate moves. Additionally, in the early 2000s, he launched the Premiere Estates Auction Company to market luxury properties across the USA. He calls those marketing campaigns extremely aggressive and exciting. You can find Kaminsky at the new Shorewood Realtors office in downtown Manhattan Beach. We still maintain the Kaminsky Real Estate Groups main office at our Rosecrans location, he explains, but love to be able to pop into our office in the heart of downtown Manhattan Beach. It feels like youre on vacation when youre down there. We also have had a very successful re-launch of Itznew Development in partnership with Todd Wohl from Zaco Development, a company designed to renovate the older homes in the South Bay and bring them up to todays standards. Many buyers love the character of the older homes but want modern amenities. We have been able to do that while maintaining the original architecture and landscape of the South Bay as opposed to tearing down and rebuilding these beautiful homes. Kaminskys take on the South Bay is that it has a small-town feel that he loves. There is a sense of community that is hard to find in other areas, he says. I did transplant here from Cleveland, Ohio and certainly am glad I was able to raise my two daughters Candace and Tina in such a great environment. Now my wife Cindy and I get to walk our dogs around downtown Manhattan Beach, where a large percentage of the shop owners have doggy treats waiting behind their counters, and though they may not recognize us, they recognize our dogs and remember their names: Jake and Nala.

As a Top Chef runner-up, mom to a young son, and co-owner of two restaurants with her husband, chef Nick Roberts, its a miracle Hudson Houses Brooke Williamson ever gets to eat at a restaurant where someone else is in charge. But the self-taught chefwho happens to be the youngest female chef to have cooked at the prestigious James Beard House in New Yorknot only finds time to dine out, she relishes the experience. South Bay Digs sat down with Williamson and learned a thing or two about entertaining, food prep and the value of television cooking shows.

South Bay Digs: Tell me about the first time you fell in love with food. Brooke Williamson: I was probably 5 or 6 years old, and I would watch cooking shows on Saturday mornings. Julia Child, The Galloping Gourmet those are the shows that inspired me. Id spend most of my mornings as a kid testing out recipes in our kitchen. SBD: How does a 5-year-old get inspired to watch cooking shows? BW: My parents always appreciated food. We ate out once or twice a week when I was young, and my mom cooked dinner on school nights. I wouldnt call my parents foodies, but they really appreciated good food and they exposed me to everything. Before I could say no to a new dish, they would ask me to at least try it once before theyd let me take a pass. I do the same for my son, and with both of his parents being chefs, were adamant about him trying everything once. SBD: Speaking of TV cooking shows, how did you find yourself on Top Chef? BW: The show had approached me a few times over several years and the reason I didnt do it the first three seasons was because Id just had a baby, Id opened a restaurant, and then I opened another restaurant. I didnt have a major excuse this last time, and I felt if I didnt do it now, I might not get the opportunity again. It seemed like a great time to challenge myself in a new arena. SBD: Challenge is how the average person might view cooking at home. How do home cooks make meal preparation harder than it should be? BW: I feel like they over think some dishes, and they place too much emphasis on following recipes properly. Its hard for me to write recipes because the flavors in foods differ so much from season to season, and [flavors] can vary depending on where you buy the food. For example, its impossible to know how much sugar is in a tomato, and that makes it tough to really know how much sugar youll need [in a tomato sauce recipe] to make it sweet enough. People have to trust their palates. Cook according to how you want to eat, not how someone else says you should. SBD: I understand you love entertaining at home. What are some of your favorite dishes to make when you have company?
BW: It depends on the season. I cook fresh and clean at home, and often when we have company, I let the farmers market inspire me. Ill go shopping and see what looks beautiful. As much as I love cooking, I also love to enjoy my company so I try to keep it simple. Ill serve everything family style so that I can appreciate the ritual of having company. SBD: Any secrets or tricks of the trade youd like to share? BW: If you can prepare an element of a dinner ahead of time, maybe a day or two before, do it. Im all for worrying only about how beautiful your table looks, and being non-frazzled. I make a lot of lists, and I look at what I can cross off before it becomes stressful. It can be especially hard when you have a kid, because you never know what kind of mood theyll be in, if theyll want to help you or unhelp you, so Ill try to prepare stuff after my son goes to bed the night before a dinner party. SBD: Red wine or white? BW: Im a Level 1 Certified Sommelier, and as much as I love wine I choose all the wine for both my restaurants I feel there are so many other beverage options. Each meal should have its own beverage; if you want to serve beer with dinner, there are some fantastic local beers out there. Wine is my go-to. A classic way to enjoy a meal is with a glass of wine, but Im really into cocktails and mixology as well. SBD: I have to askwhat happens when two chefs go out to dinner? BW: We eat out because we enjoy eating out. We enjoy seeing what other people are doing and with every meal theres something to be learned. Sometimes well go out for research purposes, but other times we just want to eat what were in the mood for.

SHRIMP SALAD ON A FRENCH ROLL WITH PICKLED RED JALAPENO AND WATERCRESS
(SERVES 6) Kick off the summer with this fabulously fresh sandwich recipe, courtesy of Hudson House chef-owners Brooke Williamson and Nick Roberts.
INGREDIENTS:
6 French rolls (large enough for a hearty sandwich) 3 red jalapenos cup apple cider vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar 3 bunches cleaned watercress 3 pounds raw peeled and deveined shrimp (any size) 2 tablespoons canola oil Juice and zest of one lemon 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 6 tablespoons mayonnaise 3 finely chopped hard boiled eggs 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 2 tablespoons chopped dill pickles 1 tablespoon chopped capers cup celery, finely diced 1 tablespoon chopped tarragon 1 tablespoon chopped Italian parsley Kosher salt and fresh black pepper
Method:
1. Slice the jalapeno into rings, discarding the seeds, and place the rings into a small bowl with the vinegar, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Stir for a moment to make sure that the sugar dissolves. Set aside for at least an hour before straining off the liquid. 2. Fill the bowl of a food processor with the shrimp and pulse until the shrimp is roughly chopped. Heat a medium saut pan over high heat and add the canola oil. Add the shrimp and a pinch of salt and saut just until the shrimp is cooked through (about 3 minutes). Remove from the heat and drain off any excess liquid. Place the cooked shrimp in a bowl in the fridge to chill.

3. In a large mixing bowl combine the lemon juice and zest, mustard, mayonnaise, garlic, eggs, pickles, capers, celery, fresh herbs, and season with salt and pepper. Whisk until well combined. Add the cooked and chilled ground shrimp and stir to incorporate. 4. Slice the bread lengthwise and lightly toast in the oven until golden brown. Fill the toasted roll with the shrimp mixture, strained pickled jalapeno, and watercress. These sandwiches should be assembled just before serving. If assembled too far ahead of time, the bread will become soggy.
professional chef mindset when youre dining for pleasure? BW: Inevitably, the fact that were chefs makes us notice things other people wouldnt, but what really matters is your overall experience. If you go out to dinner and you didnt enjoy yourself, you probably wont go back to that restaurant. The restaurants that inspire us are the ones that make us say, Hey, we want to come back here.

next to the Redondo Beach Historical Museum. Surrounded by greenery and rose bushes, the Morrell House is a charming reminder of what homes looked like decades ago here in Redondo Beach.
Step inside the restored Morrell House and youll feel as though youve stepped

So much of Redondos history is here on display. The Morrell House is a 2,346-square-foot, multi-purpose facility which is available for rental by individuals, businesses and non-profit groups and organizations on a first come, first served basis. The home is located in Heritage Court at Dominguez Park on Flagler Lane (between 190th and Beryl St.) in Redondo Beach. On a recent, warm Saturday, the park was busy with activity and a Little League game was taking place in the nearby park. A gentle breeze rustled the rose bushes in front of the Morrell House. The door of the home stood open, welcoming visitors to a different era.

Working with antiques and salvage, with a background in ceramics, Breck Armstrong has handled some unusual materials throughout his career. So when he bought a few 35mm film reels on a whim from a friend, a new project was born. I really didnt know what to do with them in the beginning, Armstrong said. Then I just started playing around with the nuts and bolts of it and came up with the table. Helping people bring the big screen into their home or office, each film reel table by Moss Studios is made just outside of Lansing, Michigan with an original aluminum 35 mm film reel from the 1930s and costs $850. In between two sheets of glass, the reel is offset by a steel base made from salvaged gear parts. First introducing the design in 2008, Armstrong went through a few different prototypes before settling on the final table. The biggest change Armstrong made throughout the process was having the table become adjustable, ranging in height from 18 to 26 inches. I really like repurposing and designing products that speak for themselves and stand alone, Armstrong said. I want the object to be recognizable, but not too tricky. It has to be truly authentic. Finding and buying most of the film reels at flea markets and on the internet, Armstrong has traveled from New York to Ohio to California to find the parts he needs to make each table. While the aluminum film reels are from the 1930s, much of the actual film comes from other decades. A few of the movies hes come across have included: North by Northwest, Dances with Wolves and Nicholas Nickleby. Getting interest in the piece because of its authenticity, he even sold about 25 tables in 2011 to Anthropologie, who featured the table in stores across the country. Anything to do with movies, cameras and reels, people are nostalgic about, Armstrong said. People really connect to the piece and find comfort in it. This wine cellar was also a new construction, but the Vail, Colorado homeowners wanted something unique to accompany the moat that surrounds their unusual and palatial homestead. Designer Billy Beson planned a wine cellar at the end of a stylish bridge crossing the moat, which floats around the entire house (you even walk over a bridge to get to the front door). Enchanting touches add to the rustic, castle-like scene, such as lights under the water which change color (seemingly magically) and stones that form a pathway to enter the wine cellar door. When you step on the first stepping-stone, the waterfall which covers the cellar like an icy, chilly magical doorway turns off so you can walk in and select a wine, cellar look out at the churning, musical water.
