Ratana Sutta The Discourse On Jewels Yndha bhtni samgatni

Whether terrestial or celestial May every being be happy Whatsoever beings are here assembled

Bhummni v yni va antalikkhe Sabbeva bhta suman bhavant Athopi sakkacca sunantu bhsita
Moreover, may they attentively listen to my words!

Tasm hi but ni smtha sabbe


Accordingly give good heed, all ye beings Show your love to humans who,

Metta Kartha mnusiy pajya Div ca ratt ca haranti y balim


Day and night, bring offerings to you Therefore guard them zealously

Tasmhi ne rakkhatha appa-matt

Yankici vitta idha v huramv Saggsu vyam ratana panita Nansama atthi tathgatna

Whatever treasure there be either here or in the world beyond Or whatever precious jewel in the heavens Yet there is none comparable to the Accomplished One

Idampi Buddh ratana panita Etena saccena suvatthi hot


By this truth, may there be happiness

Truly, in the Buddha is this precious jewel found

Khaya virga amata panta

That cessation, Passion free, Immortality Supreme

Yadajjhhag sakya mun samhito Na tena dhammena samatthi kici Idampi dhamme ratana panita Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this truth, may there be happiness

Through concentration, the tranquil sage of the Sakyas realised There is nought comparable with that Dhamma Truly, in the Dhamma is this precious jewel

Yambuddha seho parivaayi suci


That sanctity praised by the Buddha Supreme

Samdhi-mnantari kaa-mhu Samdhin tena samo navijjati


There is nought like that concentration

Is described as concentration without interruption

Idampi dhamme ratana panita Etena saccena suvatthi hotu


By this truth, may there be happiness

Truly, in the Dhamma is this precious jewel

Ye puggal aha satampasatth Cattri etni Yugni honti


They constitute four pairs

Those Eight Individuals, praised by the virtuous

Te-dakkhineyy sugatassa svak Etesu dinnni mahapphalni


To these gifts given yield abundant fruit

They, worthy of offerings, are the disciples of the Welcome One

By this truth, may there be happiness

Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel

Ye suppa yutt manas dalhena Nikkmino Gotama ssanamhi Te pattipatt amata vigayha

With steadfast mind, applying themselves Thoroughly in the Dispensation of Gotama Exempt (from passion), they have attained to that which should be attained

Laddh mudh nibbuti bhunjamn Idampi sanghe ratana panta Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this truth, may there be happiness Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel

And plunging into the Deathless, they enjoy the peace obtained without price

Yathinda khlo pathavim situ siy


Just as a firm post sunk in the earth

Catubbhi vtebhi asampa kampiyo


Cannot be shaken by the four winds

Tathpama sappurisa vadmi Yoariya saccni avecca passati

Even so do I declare him to be a righteous person Who thoroughly perceives the Noble Truths

Idampi sanghe ratana panita Etena saccena suvatthi hotu


By this truth, may there be happiness

Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel

Ye ariya saccni vibhva-yanti Gambhra-paena sudesitni


Well taught by Him of wisdom deep

Those who comprehend clearly the Noble Truths

Kicpi tehonti bhusappa matt


Although they may be mightily neglectful They can never undergo an eighth birth

Na te bhava atthama diyanti Idampi sanghe ratana panita Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this truth, may there be happiness Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel

Sah vassa dassana sampadya


For him with acquisition of Insight

Tayassu dhamm jahit bhavanti


Three things are abandoned, namely, Self-illusion, doubt and

Sakkya dihi vici kicchi taca Silabbhata vpi yadatthi kici Cat hapyehica vippa mutto
Indulgence in (wrongful) rites and ceremonies, whatever there are From the four states of misery, he is absolutely freed

Chacbhithnni abhabbo ktum Idampi sanghe ratana panita Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this truth, may there be happiness Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel

And is incapable of committing the six heinous crimes

Kicpi so kamma karoti ppaka


Whatever evil actions he does

Kyena vc uda cetasa v


Whether by body, speech or mind He is not capable of hiding it

Abhabbo so tassa paticchdya Abhabbat diha padassa vutt Idampi sanghe ratana panita Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this truth, may there be happiness For it has been said that such an act is impossible for one who has seen the Path Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel

Vannappa gumbe yath phussitagge


In the first heat of the Summer season Has the Sublime Doctrine

Like unto the woodland groves with blossomed treetops

Gimhna mse pathamasmim gimhe Tathpama dhamma vara adesayi Nibbna gamim parama hitya Idampi sanghe ratana panita Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this truth, may there be happiness Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel That leads to Nibbana, been taught for the Highest Good

Varo vara varado varharo

The unrivalled Excellent One, the Knower, the Giver, and the Bringer of the Excellent

Anuttaro dhamma varam adesayi


Has expounded the excellent Doctrine

Idampi sanghe ratana panita Etena saccena suvatthi hotu


By this truth, may there be happiness

Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel

Khna purna nava natthi sambhava


Their past is extinct, a fresh becoming there is not

Viratta citt yatike bhavasmi

Their minds are not attached to a future birth

Te khna-bij avirlhicchand
Their desires grow not

Nibbanti dhira yath yam padipo Idampi sanghe ratana panita Etena saccena suvatthi hotu
By this truth, may there be happiness Truly, in the Sangha is this precious jewel

Those wise ones go out even as this lamp

May there be happiness Salute the Buddha, the Tathagata honoured by gods and men

Bhummni v yniva antalikkhe Tathgata deva-manussa-pjita Sangha namassma suvatthi hotu


May there be happiness Salute the Sangha, honoured by gods and men

Etena sacca vajjena - dukkh vpa samentu me Etena sacca vajjena - bhay vpa samentu me Etena sacca vajjena - rog vpa samentu me
By the firm determination of this truth, may all fears cease

By the firm determination of this truth, may all suffering cease

By the firm determination of this truth, may all diseases cease
