Lesson: Classifying Triangles Grade Level: 5th CCGPS: MCC5.G3.

Understanding that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belonging to all subcategories of that category. Essential Question: How can angle and side measures help us to create and classify triangles? Activator: The teacher will begin the lesson by showing the students a BrainPop video and then stating the essential question. Lesson Activities: Direct Instruction and Guided Practice: This will be a follow up lesson from days before on how to classify triangles by their sides (equilateral, isosceles, scalene) and the measure of their angles (obtuse, acute, right). After the activator the teacher will start the Promethean Flipchart on Triangles and have students write down any last notes about each type of triangle. The flipchart is set up for guided practice so students will have the opportunity to come up to the interactive board and match/identify the types of triangles. Once the teacher has went through each slide of the flipchart students will be given directions of the tasks they will have to complete. Tasks/Practice: Students will be placed in groups based on who brought their own device because some students may have access to or bring an Android device or iPad, iPod touch, iPhone. Depending on how many devices and what type of devices will determine which task they will complete. Students will choose which activity they want to complete in their groups. The teacher will also have an iPad for use for students who do not have access to a technology device. The mobile devices that will be used will range from iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, and Android devices. Task 1: Caster: Mobile Studio With this App students will record themselves talking about the characteristics of each type of triangle. Once students have recorded all they know about the types of triangles they will publish their work as a podcast and email the podcast to the teacher. (iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone) Full Version is $4.99 but basic version is free. Task 2: Flash Card Maker Pro This App will be used with students to create their own flashcards for their use or for others to use. Students will create flashcards to practice or test the knowledge of other students on the types of triangles. Teacher will review the flashcards for accuracy. (Android devices) $4.95. Task 3: Math Geometry: Fun Learning of Polygons Students will use this app to learn more the different types of triangles. This is a game for students to play that will test their knowledge of the different types of triangles. Teacher observation of the students playing the game. (iPad) Cost is $1.99. Assessment: Students will use ActivExpressions (student response system) to write the names of triangles that the teacher will post on the promethean board. After teachers gives characteristics of a triangle or a picture of triangle students will respond with the correct name for the triangle.
