A solid shaft is supported on two bearings 2000 mm apart and rotates at 340 rpm. A 20 involute gear D 300 mm diameter is keyed to the shaft at a distance of 1500 mm to the left of the right hand bearing. Two pulleys B and C are located on the shaft at distances of 700 mm and 1400 mm respectively to the right of the left hand bearing. The diameters of the pulleys B and C are 820 mm and 620 mm respectively. 50 hp is supplied to the gear, out of which 30 hp is taken off in the pulley C and 20 hp from B. The drive from B is vertically downwards while C the drive is downwards at an angel of 30 to the horizontal. In both the cases the tension ratio is 2 and angle of lap equal to 160. The combined fatigue and shock factors for torsion and bending are 1.5 and 2.0 respectively. Design a suitable shaft taking working stress to be 42 MPa in shear and 86 MPa in tension. (16)

A rope drum of an elevator having 650 mm diameter is fitted with a brake drum of 1 m diameter. The brake drum is provided with four cast iron brake shoes each subtending an angle of 45 degrees. The mass of the elevator when loaded is 2000 kg and moves with a speed of 2.5 m/s. The brake has a sufficient capacity to stop the elevator in 2.75 m.

The gears used are of 20 full-depth involute spur gears. The drive is obtained from a 25 cm diameter pulley fixed into a 3 hp motor running at 480 rpm. The pulley drives another pulley 45 cm diameter on cross-section which carries a 3-stepped cone pulley of 35 cm, 25 cm and 15 cm diameter. The safe working stress for shaft and key material is 42 MPa in shear. The safe tension per cm width of the belt is 200 N. Ratio of tension T1 T2 = 3. Safe stress in the arm of pulley is 35 MPa. Other data if needed may be assumed. Design the following (i) (ii) Main hollow spindle Belt
