Precious Gems Memorial Run honors lives taken by drunken driver
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Participants in the Precious
Gems Memorial Run did more
than show their athletic ability at
the June 29 race. They helped
fund a video that will be shown to
students across the area.
According to Maggie Blong,
the mother of Megan Blong, who
was killed by a drunken driver in
1999, the task of speaking over
and over about the loss of her
child has become physically and
emotionally exhausting.
According to the Precious
Gems Memorial website, on
Tuesday, April 6, 1999, the com-
munities of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.,
and Medford, were greatly im-
pacted by a terrible car crash.
A drunken driver with a previ-
ous history of drunk driving ar-
rests ran a red light in Kill Devil
Hills and slammed into a car car-
rying five teenagers.
One of the teens lived in North
Carolina and the other four were
from Burlington County.
The teenagers Blong, Aman-
da Geiger, Shana Lawler and An-
gela McGrady all died at the
crash. Mike Horner sustained se-
rious injuries, but survived.
The drunken driver sustained
minor injuries and was charged
with DWI and other offenses.
The girls were from Medford,
and the race took place at
Shawnee High School.
Its getting too difficult,

Color Run was to
deliver same message
as Precious Gems
Blong said. Were concentrating
more on Burlington Countys
boot camp, where its a last
chance for teenagers to either go
to jail or boot camp.
The task of speaking on the
tragedy and loss has also taken a
toll on Erin Lawler, the substance
awareness coordinator at Seneca
High School and Shana Lawlers
older sister.
In May, Lawler organized a
Color Run for Seneca students,
due to the challenge of speaking
about the accident.
There are thousands of cross-
es that are erected every year be-
cause someone didn't think,
someone didn't step in and say
something, take the keys. Some-
one's somebody is represented
with each cross, and that isn't
fair, Lawler told The Sun in May.
That's why we created the Pre-
cious Gems Memorial because
we refuse to let their loss be in
vain.
Lawlers intent of the Color
Run was to deliver the same in-
formation the Precious Gems les-
son provided in a lighter manner.
For the past 14 years, I and the
other families have pressed for-
ward and entered new chapters
in our lives, Lawler said. But
there is not a day that I do not
think of my sister. Melissa Mar-

Golf tournament raises
more than $152K
Get Loud FORE! A Good
Cause, Samaritan Healthcare &
Hospices 22nd Annual Golf Tour-
nament, recently welcomed 173
golfers to Little Mill Country Club
to raise funds and awareness for
Samaritans not-for-profit servic-
es.
The tournament, sponsored by
The Richardson Family Dealer-
ships, raised more than $152,000 to
help Samaritan provide care for
community members coping with
aging, serious illness or grief and
to assist patients and their fami-
lies live each day to the fullest
with dignity, comfort and support.
We are so grateful for the out-
pouring of support for this years
tournament, said Maryann Boc-
colini, Samaritan president and
CEO. This generosity allows
Samaritan to care for uninsured
patients and offer programs such
as Palliative Medical Partners,
Transitions, bereavement support
and the comfort of services such
as massage, music, pet and aroma
therapies.
The tournaments theme cen-
tered on getting loud about
Samaritan programs and servic-
es.
We encouraged golfers to wear
their most brightly colored shorts
to show their support. Each pair
of striped, polka-dotted or paisley-
printed shorts helped Samaritan
spread the message loud and
clear that our expanded family of
services is here to serve all who
need us, Samaritan Director of
Development Robin Todd said.
We are so grateful for the work
of our golf committee, chaired by
Roy Fazio of The Protocall Group
and Cliff Mancine of Mancine
Optical, Boccolini said. The
support of 80 sponsors and
donors, 173 attendees and more
than 50 volunteers means that
Samaritan can say yes to pa-
tients, families or clients who
seek our services without regard
to their ability to pay.

earth. The girls, their families
had no say.
In January 2000, Marvin was
found guilty of four counts of
second-degree murder and one
count of assault with a deadly
weapon. She was sentenced to a
minimum of 60 years in prison.
Currently, Precious Gems is
working with the Art Institute of
Philadelphia on the video, which
began production in the spring.
This video will be distributed
to any high school that wants it
when were done at their prom
assembly, health classes or driv-
ers education, Blong said. Its
about a decision that impacts so
many other people.
The video will also be sent to
North Carolina.
People dont realize it, but we
couldnt have done it without this
run, Blong said.
Organizing the most recent
run was a seamless process for
the organization.
Ive been associated with the
Pinelands Striders since 1978,
and as time went on, I ran with a
few friends. After our daughter
was killed, the Pinelands Striders
gave us a call one day to do this
race, father of Amanda Geiger,
Mike Geiger, said. Everyone in
the Striders is wonderful and en-
thusiastic.
According to Geiger, the run
was originally the Independence
Day Run, but with the partner-
ship, it transformed into the Pre-
cious Gems Memorial Run.
Geiger hopes the run will help
raise awareness and inspire peo-
ple to use common sense.
Its hard to measure but we
hope we made an impact on the
others and the community,
Geiger said.

F
or once, New Jersey should get
some positive national atten-
tion. Last week, the state made
two major moves in a public higher ed-
ucation reorganization in an attempt
to put New Jersey colleges on the na-
tional map.
Rutgers University added two new
medical schools, immediately jumping
the school into the top 25 in the coun-
try for research funding. Gov. Christie
said it puts Rutgers on the path to
being one of Americas great research
institutions.
Rowan University also became a re-
search university through the reor-
ganization, giving New Jersey a solid
foothold of attractive public colleges
in the southern part of the state.
New Jersey is the 11th most popu-
lous state, with 8.8 million people, as of
July 1, 2012, despite being the fourth
smallest state in terms of size. Howev-
er, due to a lack of major public uni-
versities, many of the Garden States
college students were traveling to
neighboring states for higher educa-
tion.
Penn State University, Temple Uni-
versity, the University of Delaware,
the State University of New York, the
University of Maryland and the Uni-
versity of Connecticut are all popular
public school choices for New Jersey
students.
Over the last 10 years, Rutgers and
Rowan have made great strides in
keeping students in our home state,
and last weeks moves only further
that aim. We must continue to im-
prove our public universities, in addi-
tion to focusing on our local K-12 pub-
lic school districts.
If we keep our home-grown stu-
dents in state for public higher educa-
tion, then were all able to reap the re-
wards. If were able to go even further,
well be able to attract outside talent,
and become part of the list of dream
colleges for out-of-state students.
New Jersey is filled with promising
students and bright minds ready to be-
come world leaders.
Lets continue to foster that intelli-
gence, that drive and that desire right
here in New Jersey.
Producing more home-grown talent
Improvements at Rutgers, Rowan may keep students in-state for college

Senates passes bill that is
anti-U.S. citizen worker
The Senate in its "can't wait to read the
bill or understand its implications" hurry
passed an immigration bill that is the most
anti-U.S. citizen worker legislation ever.
It will affect your income and help insure
any unemployed American stays unem-
ployed longer.
"Registered provisional immigrants" for-
mer illegal immigrants granted legal status
to remain in America, are by this law ineli-
gible for Obamacare.
Employers who hire U.S. citizens as
workers and can't afford to offer health in-
surance would pay a $3,000 penalty. Penal-
ties are not tax deductible, so in effect it will
cost business $5,000 to hire a U.S. citizen
over a formerly illegal immigrant.
Is that change you can believe in?
Now this will especially hurt low-skilled
American citizens. The working poor will
get poorer and suffer yet greater unemploy-
ment. But this will also affect every other
American who still has a job. Because these
11 million illegal immigrants, and it could
be as high as 20 million, will cause all wage
rates downward. If you think getting a
raise is hard now, just wait!
Lenin was famous for saying that a capi-
talist would sell you the rope that commu-
nists would use to hang them.
Now, I can't tell you whether the 68 US
senators who voted for this bill are econom-
ic illiterates or if this legislation is meant
to force US worker wages lower to benefit
certain business interests, but regardless
Americans will be seeing their wages cut if
this becomes law. Is this how Obama wants
to change America, creating certain special
classes of people with special rights?
Can you describe this legislation as any-
thing except un-American as it violates the
most basic of concept of equality of all
men before the law?
It's time to actively oppose anyone who
supported this legislation as they have
shown their true colors.

bankruptcy closed unprofitable
plants, and slashed jobs, wages
and benefits.
Ford Motor Company followed
in their wake. Out of the smoky
ruins emerged the world's most
competitive automotive industry.
Stop for a second and compare
that with a dwindling and highly
unprofitable car industry in Eu-
rope. In line with good socialistic
ideology, the governments of
France, Italy and Germany are
prioritizing jobs over profitabili-
ty with the inevitable result that
Europe is stuck with an automo-
tive sector in steep decline, fol-
lowed by massive losses of jobs.
Forty percent of European as-
sembly plants are operating in
the red, costing their owners bil-
lions of dollars in losses.
It is assumed that any plant op-
erating below 70 percent of ca-
pacity looses money.
Even worse, carmakers are not
investing in new plants and new
equipment in Western Europe,
and probably never will.
The good news is that Euro-
pean automotive workers earn
$60 per hour, including benefits
compared with $38 per hour in
the US.
The bad news is that the $60
per hour jobs are disappearing
fast.
Not willing to face economic
reality and do what's necessary,
the European governments are
turning a blind eye, allowing the
situation to get worse by the day.
As a matter of fact, these gov-
ernments do not allow carmak-
ers to close unprofitable plants.
Even governments, as you may
have noticed, can't hide from the
economic reality of globaliza-
tion. A few years ago, who would
have thought that BMWs and
Mercedes would be made in the
United States and that 70 percent
of all BMWs and Mercedes made
here would be exported to mar-
kets that would otherwise have
been served by BMW and Mer-
cedes plants in Germany?
Not me and certainly not the
European unions!
