Students are introduced to the Studio Habit of Mind ''Stretch and Explore'' Students experiment freely with unconventional art making tools

MA Standards 1.13 Make reasonable choices of 2D and 3D media, materials, tools, and techniques to achieve desired effects in specific projects. 2.15 Create artwork that demonstrates understanding of the elements and principles of design in establishing a point of view, a sense of space, or a mood. 3.10 Create 2D and 3D artwork that explores the abstraction of ideas and representations Relationship to Unit Half of the class has just completed a series of rigorous lessons involving observational drawing and painting. This lesson will allow these students to experience the other side of artistic productionplayful experimentation. The other half of the class has been following their own interests in a variety of projects, and this lesson will serve as another option for them to consider. Relationship to Life Students have shown eagerness to explore freely using non traditional techniques and materials, and this project will allow them to investigate their interest more fully. Materials A variety of brewed teas, vegetables, assorted foods, paper. Introduction of Lesson The Studio Habit ''Stretch and Explore'' is introduced along with the ''Food Art'' table. Students are encouraged to explore the new activity or continue to work on their current projects. Stress is placed upon student productivity within one of the choices despite the approaching holiday

and long weekend. Demo #1 Students are given demonstrations of a few printing techniques with carrots and tea, and are reminded of the skills that they have already learned through the completion of other projects. 55 Minutes of work time Tools for Assessment Students self-assess through the use of check-in folders. These folders contain sheets with questions which are answered by the student every day regarding the progress and performance he or she saw in him or herself over the course of that days class. Students are further assessed through a group critique at the very end of the project and through End of Project Assesment sheets that are filled in by students and by the teacher. Adaptations for Differentiated Learning The project is relatively open ended. Students can work within the framework of the project to the best of their individual abilities. Extensions of Lesson/Unit Students who grasp the construction concepts early on have the opportunity to learn more complex building techniques.
