Mediating Variable Scales

Knowledge: The following questions were used in the calculation of the knowledge score. Responses were agree, not sure and disagree. Do you think bullying is: Calling someone names all the time Leaving someone out all the time Hitting, kicking and pushing someone all the time Saying nasty things about someone all the time Hiding or breaking someones things all the time Saying you are going to hurt someone all the time Giving mean looks to someone all the time Forcing someone to do things they dont want to do all the time Peer support: The following questions were used in the peer support scale. Responses were lots of times, sometimes and never. Are there kids in your class who would: Choose you on their team Tell you you're good at things Explain rules of a game Invite you to play at their home Share things with you Help you if you hurt yourself Miss you if you werent at school Make you feel better Pick you for a partner Help you if studs are being mean to you Tell you you're their friend Ask you to play when you are alone Tell you secrets Bullying attitudes: The following questions were used in the pro-victim and pro-bully scale. Responses were agree, not sure and disagree. Indicate how much you agree or disagree: Kids who get picked on usually deserve it A bully is really a coward * Pro victim Pro bully *

It makes me angry when a kid is picked on Kids should tell when being bullied Its funny to see kids get upset when they are teased Kids who hurt others weaker than themselves should be told off I like kids who stand up for themselves
You should not pick on someone weaker than you I like it when someone sticks up for kids who are bullied I feel uncomfortable watching bullying

Outcome expectancies: The following questions were used in the outcome expectancies scale. Responses were yes, maybe and no. If you bullied another student/s what do you think would happen: Other kids would be scared of me Other kids would like me My parents would find out and talk to me I would feel bad about myself Other kids would think I was tough I would get into trouble I would feel bad for kids I bullied Other kids would not want to be my friend My parents would be unhappy with me I would feel good about myself Other kids wouldn't bully me

Qualitative Research: Screening Survey

Confidential Survey
Dear Year X Student Thank you for participating in the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST), Covert Bullying Project. DEST is using this survey to find out how students treat each other. We are asking you some questions about bullying. All information you provide will remain confidential. No-one at your school or your home will see your answers. Please DO NOT put your name on this survey. This is not a test and there are no right or wrong answers. Please answer all the questions as honestly as you can. We are very interested in what you have to say and not what others around you think. If you dont want to answer any questions, you dont have to. If you do not want to complete this survey the research assistant visiting your class will provide you with an alternative worksheet to complete. Thank you for your help. Melanie Epstein Covert Bullying Project Project Director

Please read the following definition of bullying: You may have noticed that students sometimes bully other students. There are lots of different ways that students can be bullied.

Bullying is when these things happen AGAIN AND AGAIN to someone who finds it hard to stop it from happening:

1 Being ignored, left out on purpose,or not allowed to join in. 2. Being hit, kicked or pushed around. 3 Lies or nasty stories are told about them to make other kids not like them. 4. Being made afraid of getting hurt. 5 Being made fun of and teased in a mean and hurtful way. 6. But when teasing is done in a friendly and playful way we dont call it bullying. 7 While fighting is wrong, it is not bullying when two students who are AS STRONG AS each other get into a fight. Adapted from Olweus, 1996.

When you answer the next questions, please think about bullying in this way. You can look back at this definition to remind yourself what bullying is.

Qualitative Research: Interview Protocol

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, SCIENCE AND TRAINING (DEST) COVERT BULLYING PROJECT GENERAL INTERVIEW GUIDE INTRODUCTION Hi my name is ________________________ and I work at Edith Cowan University. We are doing some research to find out about how students treat each other. You probably remember doing a written survey in the last few weeks. So we can find out some more about what kids your age think we are interviewing students in Years 4, 6, 7 and 8. Like the written survey this is not a test and there are no right or wrong answers. If youre unsure or dont know what a question is asking you, its okay to say I dont know. I would like you to answer all the questions as best as you can. I wont talk to anyone at the school about the answers you give me today and your parents wont find out either. If you dont want to answer any of the questions or if you want to stop the interview let me know. Is it okay with you if I record the interview on a tape so I can write down all the things you say during our discussion? I will make sure your name isnt used in anything you say and teachers, your parents and other students will not hear or see what you say. When I leave here I will listen to the tape, write some notes then destroy the tape. Is that okay? Are you happy to start the interview? WARM-UP To start with, Id like to know a little bit about you.

1. Can you tell me how many brothers and sisters you have and all the people who
live at your house? [if student lives shared-time between parents, the house you spend most time at]

2. What do you enjoy most about school? 3. What do you enjoy the least about school [bullying may come up, if so, tell the
student you will give them some information at the end of the talk about who they can talk to for help]?

4. When you did the questionnaire at school last term, we asked you about some
things people may use to keep in contact with each other. These were things like mobile phones, chat rooms, social networking sites and web pages. Im going to list each one and Id like you to tell me what kids your age call these things:

a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i.

Text messages on the mobile phone? Pictures sent on the internet or mobile phone, webcam or video clips? Phone calls? Email? Chat rooms? Instant messenger (e.g. MSN)? Social networking sites? [prompt: like MySpace; what sort of sites like this do kids your age use?] Internet game? Web log/blog?
21

j.

Web page/website?

5. Can you tell me about any other things kids your age use to keep in contact with
each other?

6. Can you tell me what kids your age say to describe this group of things?
SCENARIO The next activity is a bit like some activities you might have done in class; I am going to tell you a story and then Im going to ask you some questions about the story. The story is about Chris. [Read scenario use male scenario for male students and female scenario for female students] Scenario - MALE Chris is in Year 7 and has a close group of friends. However, one morning things seemed to change. Some of his friends started treating him badly in ways that other people and especially teachers couldnt see during class. This continues every day until later in the week they start treating Chris in the same way also during the recess and lunch break. No-one else seemed to notice and he didnt tell anyone. Things went from bad to worse the next week for Chris when he went home and found the kids at school had found a way to treat him badly at home as well. He definitely didnt want to tell his parents about what they had done, and especially not about how they were reaching him to hurt him at home. Even though his parents were pretty good and around a lot they had no idea what Chris was going through. Chris felt he could put up with how they were treating him at school more than he could put up with how they were reaching him in his home as well. He finally told one of his favourite teachers Scenario - FEMALE Chris is in Year 7 and has a close group of friends. However, one morning things seemed to change. Some of her friends started treating her badly in ways that other people and especially teachers couldnt see during class. This continues every day until later in the week they start treating Chris in the same way also during the recess and lunch break. No-one else seemed to notice and she didnt tell anyone. Things went from bad to worse the next week for Chris when she went home and found the kids at school had found a way to treat her badly at home as well. She definitely didnt want to tell her parents about what they had done, and especially not about how they were reaching her to hurt her at home. Even though her parents were pretty good and around a lot they had no idea what Chris was going through. Chris felt she could put up with how they were treating her at school more than she could put up with how they were reaching her in her home as well. She finally told one of her favourite teachers TERMINOLOGY AND SCOPE

7. What sorts of things might Chriss friends be doing to him/her at school to treat
him/her badly?

8. Which of these things would teachers not be able to see or not want to see
during class?

9. What things could these kids be doing to hurt Chris at home in ways that his/her
parents wont easily find out?

10.In America some kids have an unusual name for some of this behaviour, that
happens again and again to students to deliberately hurt them, they call this punking what would you or other kids your age call it? What name is used most often? What name do older kids use? What about younger kids? What have you heard adults call this type of behaviour?
22

11.How often does this kind of thing happen to kids at your school? Who does it the
most boys or girls, older or younger? How much older/younger?

12.When this behaviour is done in the classroom and also at recess and lunchtime
how is it different? What sorts of things might Chris be experiencing in the classroom from kids at school that is the same or different to what he/she might be experiencing at break times or even on the way to or home from school? USING TECHNOLOGY

13.In the story, we found out that this behaviour followed Chris home. What do you
think this means? How could the kids hurt him/her in his/her home, without actually being there?

14.What things could these kids be doing to hurt Chris at home in ways that his/her
parents wont easily find out? [If student doesnt mention technology tools, Do you think they could be using technology to hurt Chris at home?] If these kids are using technology [or insert words used by student] to reach Chris in what ways would they do this? What about (e.g.: Text messages by mobile phone; pictures, webcam or video clips; phone calls; email; chat rooms; MSN messenger or another form of instant messenger; social networking sites like MySpace; Internet game; Web log (Blog); or Web page (website))?

15.How many of your family or friends have had nasty things sent to them using
technology [use words the students provide]?

16.How common do you think this behaviour is among kids your age, do you think
this happens: most days, about once a week, every few weeks, only once or twice a term, or not at all?

17.At what age do you think it becomes more common if at all? Why do you think
so?

18.Which behaviour would hurt Chris the most being hurt by kids from school
using technology in his/her home or hurting him/her in ways at school that adults and others cant easily see? Why?

19.Why do some kids use technology [or insert word provided by student] to hurt
other kids? Some kids say it is easier to hurt someone when you dont have to look at them face to face, what do you think about that?

20.Chris was treated badly by kids at school first and then they found ways to hurt
him/her when he/she was at home is this what you think normally happens: does it start at school and then follow kids home or the other way around or both at the same time?

21.What things do kids do to deliberately hurt someone again and again that hurt
kids the most? Why does this behaviour hurt more than other ways, what else can be very hurtful? Anything else?

22.What if Chris was being treated this way by kids of the opposite sex, would this
be harder to deal with? Why? /Why not? TELLING

23.Why didnt Chris tell his/her parents? Why do you think kids often dont tell their
parents if they have been treated badly by other kids, especially in ways that are not easily seen by others?

24. What should parents do to help their kids talk about these things?
23

25.Why might Chris not tell his/her teachers? Why do you think kids might feel this
way?

26.

What should teachers do to help kids talk about these things?

27.How would you feel if you were Chris? How would you feel if you were one of the
kids hurting Chris?

28.Now Im going to read you a list of things people might do. Id like you to tell me
what words you would use to describe each of these types of things that happen repeatedly to someone about your age. If youd like me to say any again, please let me know:

a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. j.

being deliberately avoided or ignored, not allowed to join in, or left out of a group; being teased in nasty ways or called hurtful names; being told another student wouldnt like you unless you did what he/she said; having lies told about you or someone trying to make other students not like you; being made to feel afraid that you would get hurt; having someone tell your secrets to others to deliberately hurt you; spreading hurtful rumours; being ganged up on by a group; someone deliberately trying to break up a friendship you had; or someone deliberately tried to frighten or threaten you by continually staring at you.

29.How else do kids try to hurt others like Chris in ways that are not easily seen by
adults or others? Are there any other names or words used to describe this? CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSON BULLYING

30.Now Id like you to think about the kids who are hurting Chris in the ways we
talked about before. How old do you think they were when they started hurting other kids like Chris in this way?

31. Why do you think some kids like to treat other students in this way? 32.What actions do you think girls are most likely to do if they try to hurt other
people in ways that cant be easily seen by adults or others people?

33.What about boys? What do you think boys are most likely to do if they try to hurt
other people in ways that cant be easily seen by adults or others? SUGGESTIONS FOR PROGRAM STRATEGIES Youre doing really well, theres just 1 more question. Think back to the story I told you about Chris when we started talking today. Chris class have been doing some activities in the classroom about how to respond to this sort of behaviour, but he/she hasnt found it useful.

24

34.If you were making up a program for schools to help stop kids hurting each other
in these ways, what sort of things would you include in your program? How would this work? Thank you very much for answering all these questions, you really did a great job. Is there anything else you would like to tell me about anything weve talked about today, or do you have any questions to ask me? Before you go, I need to tell you that if answering any of these questions today raised any issues or feelings and you would like to talk to someone, please talk to an adult you can trust, for example, a parent or caregiver, school counsellor, school nurse and social worker or an adult in the school you trust. You can also phone Kids Help Line and I will give you a card with their details. They provide a free, confidential, anonymous, 24-hour telephone and online counselling service specifically for young people aged between 5 and 18 years. [Give Kids Helpline card and incentive to student] [if student identified bullying was something they didnt like about school (Q3), suggest they talk to someone they trust, like their parent, class teacher, or one of the other school staff mentioned above.] Thank you again for helping us with our research. You can go back to class now/XX will take you back to class now.

Please read the following description of bullying: You may have noticed that students sometimes bully other students. There are lots of different ways that students can be bullied. Bullying is when these things happen AGAIN AND AGAIN to someone who finds it hard to stop it from happening:

Examples of FACE to FACE or OVERT bullying are described in pictures 1 and 2. 1 Hit, kicked or pushed around 2 Made fun of and teased in a mean and hurtful way.

Bullying in ways not easily seen by others or COVERT bullying is described in pictures 3 to 6. 3 Lies or nasty stories told about someone behind their back. 4 Made afraid of getting hurt. 5 Ignored, excluded, left out on purpose, or not allowed to join in. 6 Mean and nasty pictures or words posted/sent on the Internet or mobile phone. However, it is NOT considered bullying: When teasing is done in a friendly and playful way. When two students who are AS STRONG AS each other get into a fight. While fighting is wrong, it is not bullying. (adapted from Olweus, 1996, Hinduja, Patchin & Burgess Proctor 2007)

CONFIDENTIAL SURVEY
Dear Staff Member, The Child Health Promotion Research Centre (CHPRC) at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia has been contracted by the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) to conduct research into indirect or covert bullying in Australian schools. This project aims to improve the knowledge and understanding of covert bullying (including cyber bullying) in primary and secondary schools to ultimately determine effective policy and practice to address this problem. Thank you for agreeing to complete the survey. We will ask you about two types of bullying. 1) Overt bullying this type of bullying is done face-to-face and includes: being physically aggressive like hitting, kicking or pushing someone around; or making fun of or teasing others in mean or hurtful ways . 2) Covert bullying this type of bullying is not easily seen by adults or others and includes: telling lies or nasty stories about someone behind their back; making someone feel afraid they may get hurt; or ignoring, excluding, or leaving someone out on purpose, or not letting someone join in. When covert bullying is done electronically using technology it is known as CYBER bullying. This refers to sending mean and nasty pictures or words on the Internet or mobile phone. We have used these pictures with your students to explain these two major types of bullying. These behaviours are only considered bullying when they are done AGAIN and AGAIN to deliberately hurt someone who finds it hard to stop it from happening. It is not considered bullying when teasing is done in a friendly and playful way OR when two students who are AS STRONG AS each other get into a fight. The questions in this survey primarily relate to covert bullying. Please consider the definition of covert bullying as you answer the following questions.

Thank you for taking part in the Covert Bulling Project. Your schools participation will assist us to improve the knowledge and understanding of covert bullying among Australian primary school and secondary school students. This new knowledge will also help to determine effective policy and practice to address this problem. You have received a Classroom Pack of materials containing the following:

Teachers Guide (survey administration protocol) Student surveys (one per student with consent) Yellow C4 envelopes (one per student survey) 1x large yellow envelope (to collect your class student surveys) Kids Help Line information (one per student) Student Consent List: list of students who have parent permission to participate in the
survey Please see your schools Covert Bullying Project Coordinator if any of these items listed above are not in your Classroom Pack. The information presented in this document outlines the actions you need to take as a survey administrator for the Covert Bullying Project in your school. If you have any questions about the survey process, please contact your schools Covert Bullying Project Coordinator. We greatly appreciate your participation in the Covert Bullying Project. Ste p 1 2 3 4 Survey Administration Guidelines Using the Student Consent List, identify students who may have difficulty completing the survey and decide whether they will need extra help. Introduce the activity to the class by reading the first page of the survey protocol. Distribute surveys to students who have parent consent to participate using the Student Consent List. Distribute alternate school work or activities to students not completing the survey. Begin the survey. 5 Note: the class time to allow for student survey administration is approximately one hour for students in Years 4-6. During the survey: please do not move around the room or look at students answers as it may change they way they respond. Finished: collect completed surveys. Please complete the Questionnaire Summary Table (found at the bottom of the Student Consent List) with students who: completed a survey; refused to participate; were absent; or were unable to complete a survey due to learning/literacy difficulties.

79

The following pages provide more detail about the above steps.

Survey administration guide for the Covert Bullying Project

Note: Please read out all information to your class, except statements written in Italics.

Ste p1

Using the Student Consent List, identify students who may have difficulty completing the survey and decide whether they will need extra help. Please make sure there is someone available to assist these students. If you decide that it would be better for them not to participate please give these students alternate school work or activities. Please place a line through these students names on the Student Consent List, and mark with the comment not able to complete. Introduce the activity to the class. Please read aloud the statement below.

Ste p2

I am giving you a survey today to help us all make sure our school continues to be a safe place that promotes learning and healthy relationships. This is an individual activity and it is important that you work quietly and follow my instructions. Some students in the class will be doing another activity. If this is you, someone from your home has sent back a consent form indicating that they would not like you to complete a survey. Instead you will complete alternate class work. Please do not talk to the students doing the survey or look at what they are writing. To start with, I will hand out the surveys. Please listen quietly for your name. As I call your name, please come to me and collect your survey. Once you have received your survey, please place it neatly on your desk and wait quietly until all the surveys have been handed out. Once everyone has a survey, we will all start together, so please sit quietly and get a pen or pencil ready. Please do not open the survey until I say to do so. Ste p3 Distribute surveys one at a time. Please hand out a survey to each student in your class who has parental consent as indicated on the Student Consent List. If a student has consent to complete a survey, but is absent, please write the students name on a survey in PENCIL and ask them to complete the survey when is next suitable. Ask the student to erase their name from the top of the survey before sealing in the yellow envelope. Please ensure that any students who are not present on the day of the survey Step administration completes the survey at a later time THIS TERM. If a student refuses to do the survey, ask them to wait until the class has begun the survey. Encourage, but dont force them to participate. Remind them that they dont have to answer any questions they dont want to. Also emphasize the confidentiality of the surveys. If a student still refuses, provide them with an alternate activity. Keep your conversation with them quiet to avoid others around them joining in and also refusing to participate. Please record the number of students who refuse to participate on the Student Consent
80

List. Please make sure that students completing the survey are seated in test conditions. Ste p4 Distribute alternate school work or activities to students not completing the survey. Please ensure that students completing the alternate activity are NOT seated next to those completing the survey. Begin the survey. Slowly read aloud each of the questions, including the question number, question and responses. Read the questions, prompts and responses exactly as they are written.Do not expand on or explain the question. Do not paraphrase (say a question in your own words). All students in all classes must receive exactly the same information. This means they are only toreceive the information as it is written in the Teachers Guide. You may repeat a question. Do this if a student asks you to repeat a question or if they say theydo not understand a word. Remind students to not race ahead. Praise students for staying with you. If many students are racing ahead, ask all students to stop and put their pencils down. Ask all students to turn to the question number you are up to. When you see all students have thisquestion in front of them, tell students they can pick up their pencils. Tell students that if they have already completed the question to check their answer to make sure they understood the question. Remind students that we are interested in what they have to say and to keep their eyes on their own survey and not on what others are writing. Use lots of praise. The survey is long, so please praise students for working hard and staying with the task. Remind them we will give them something at the end if they keep working well.

Ste p5

POSSIBLE STUDENT QUESTIONS AND APPROPRIATE RESPONSES What does this mean? If a student does not understand a question, please dont reword the question or give the answer. Its best to read the question to the student clearly and tell them to answer as best they can or to leave it blank. What do I do with the pictures on Page 2? These pictures provide a definition of bullying. When the student is answering the next questions they should think about bullying in this way. They can look back at this definition to remind themselves what bullying is. Does it count as bullying if it was your brother or sister? If the behaviour is occurring at school the student can include their brother or sister when answering. What does the number on top of the survey mean? The number on the top right-hand corner of the survey is used to identify your school and year level only. It is not possible to find out who completed a survey. The surveys are anonymous.

Please read out the information below: Lets read the cover of the survey together. You read in your head and Ill read aloud. Dear Student

81

We are using this survey to find out how students treat each other at your school. We will be asking you some questions about bullying and your experiences while using the Internet or a mobile phone. All information you provide will remain confidential. No one at your school or your home will see your answers. Your survey will be sealed in an envelope and mailed to University researchers. Please DO NOT put your name on this survey. This is not a test and there are no right or wrong answers. Please answer all the questions as honestly as you can. We are very interested in what you have to say and not what others around you think. If you dont want to answer any questions, you dont have to. If you do not want to complete this survey you do not have to.

Before you turn the page and we start the survey, there are a few things we need to talk about. Lots of questions in this survey ask you about THIS TERM. Who would like to tell the class what we mean by THIS TERM? THIS TERM is: The term you are currently in. Can everyone please think about THIS TERM when they answer the questions in this survey. Remember, your answers and the answers of other students are private. So please feel comfortable in answering each question based on what you think, not what you think your friends will write or what you think we want you to say. There are no right or wrong answers and everyone will answer differently. Remember, no-one at school not even me, will see your answers. Your parents will not see them either. When you are finished, your surveys will be collected and placed in an envelope, then sent to Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. Please raise your hand if you have any questions. Before you begin answering the questions, I would first like to read aloud some examples of different types of bullying. Please turn the page Lets look at the following descriptions of bullying. You may have noticed that students sometimes bully other students and there are many ways that students can be bullied. Bullying is when these things happen AGAIN and AGAIN to someone who finds it hard to stop it from happening. Again and again means that these things keep happening to someone lots of times. Please look at the descriptions below (while the students look at these descriptions, please read out the descriptions on the next page).

1. Hit, kicked or pushed around. 2. Made fun of and teased in a mean and hurtful way
82

3. Lies or nasty stories told about someone behind their back. 4. Made afraid of getting hurt. 5. Ignored, excluded, left out on purpose, or not allowed to join in. 6. Mean and nasty pictures or words posted/sent on the internet or mobile phone.

Some types of bullying can be physical, like hitting, kicking or pushing someone around, as seen in description number 1; Others are done face to face, like making fun of or teasing others in mean or hurtful ways as seen in description number 2; Other types of bullying are done in ways that are not easily seen by adults or others. This type of bullying includes: Telling lies or nasty stories about someone behind their back, as seen in picture 3; Making someone feel afraid that they may get hurt, seen in picture 4; Ignoring, excluding, or leaving someone out on purpose, or not letting someone join in, seen in picture 5; or Sending or posting mean and nasty pictures or words on the Internet or mobile phone, seen in picture 6. This definition refers to the Internet. Who can tell the class what the Internet is? (If further clarification of the Internet is required: The Internet is a collection of interconnected computer networks, which allows access to things like websites and email). Does anyone have any questions about these types of bullying? When you answer the questions about bullying, please think about bullying in these ways. You can look back at the pictures at any time while answering the survey to help you remember what we mean by bullying.
83

Before we continue, it is important to understand that it is not considered bullying when teasing is done in a friendly and playful way OR when two students who are AS STRONG AS each other get into a fight. Remember, while fighting is wrong, it is not bullying if those involved are as strong as each other. Now it is time to begin the survey. For each question, you will be asked to pick a response by circling a number. If you want to change an answer you have circled, put a cross through it and then circle the answer for that question that best describes you. Does anyone have any questions about how to answer the survey? It is really important that we complete each question together as I read it out. Dont jump ahead or turn the page until I say. If I am reading too fast or too slow, please raise your hand and let me know.
Step 6 DURING ADMINISTRATION: Please DONT move around the room and look at what students are writing. If there are no more questions, please turn the page and we will begin Question 1.

Covert Bullying Project: Teachers Guide (Year 7 to 9)

Thank you for taking part in the Covert Bulling Project. Your schools participation will assist us to improve the knowledge and understanding of covert bullying among Australian primary school and secondary school students. This new knowledge will also help to determine effective policy and practice to address this problem. You have received a Classroom Pack of materials containing the following:

Teachers Guide (survey administration protocol) Student surveys (one per student with consent) Yellow C4 envelopes (one per student survey) 1x large yellow envelope (to collect you class student surveys) Kids Help Line information (one per student) Student Consent List: list of students who have parent permission to participate in the
survey Please see your schools Covert Bullying Project Coordinator if any of these items listed above are not in your Classroom Pack. 5 Note: the class time to allow for student survey administration is approximately 40 minutes for students in years 7-9. During the survey: please do not move around the room or look at students answers as it may change the way they respond.

117

Finished: collect completed surveys. Please complete the Questionnaire Summary Table (found at the bottom of the Student Consent List) with students who: completed a survey; refused to participate; were absent; or were unable to complete a survey due to learning/literacy difficulties.

The following pages provide more detail about the above steps.

118

Survey administration guide for the Covert Bullying Project Note: Please read out all information to your class, except statements written in Italics. Step 1 Using the Student Consent List, identify students who may have difficulty completing the survey and decide whether they will need extra help. Please make sure there is someone available to assist these students. If you decide that it would be better for them not to participate please place a line through these students names on the Student Consent List, and mark with the comment not able to complete.

Step 2 Introduce the activity to the class. Please read aloud the statement below. Step 3 Distribute surveys one at a time. Please record the number of students who refuse to participate on the Student Consent List. Please make sure that students completing the survey are seated in test conditions. Step 4. Distribute alternate school work or activities to students not completing the survey. Please ensure that students completing the alternate activity are NOT seated next to those completing the survey.

119

Step 5 Begin the survey. Remind students that we are interested in what they have to say and to feel comfortable and confident to answer all questions as honestly as they can. ALL surveys are confidential.

120

To get started I will read aloud the instructions on the cover. Dear Student We are using this survey to find out how students treat each other at your school. Please turn the page
121

122

Lets look at the following descriptions of bullying. You may have noticed that students sometimes bully other students and there are many ways that students can be bullied. Bullying is when these things happen AGAIN and AGAIN to someone who finds it hard to stop it from happening. Again and again means that these things keep happening to someone lots of times. Please look at the pictures below (while the students look at these pictures, please read out the descriptions below the illustration box). Some types of bullying can be physical, like hitting, kicking or pushing someone around; Others are done face to face, like making fun of or teasing others in mean or hurtful ways; Other types of bullying are done in ways that are not easily seen by adults or others. This type of bullying includes: Telling lies or nasty stories about someone behind their back; Making someone feel afraid that they may get hurt; Ignoring, excluding, or leaving someone out on purpose, or not letting someone join in; or Sending or posting mean and nasty pictures or words on the Internet or mobile phone. Does anyone have any questions about these types of bullying?

123

When you answer the questions about bullying, please think about bullying in these ways. You can look back at the pictures at any time while answering the survey to help you remember what we mean by bullying. Once you have finished the survey, please place it in the yellow envelope provided.

Step 6 DURING ADMINISTRATION: Please DONT move around the room and look at what students are writing.

Step 7 Once the survey is completed: please ask students to close their surveys and seal it in the yellow envelope provided. Ask a student to collect the surveys in the large student survey collection envelope. Stop students 2 minutes before the end of class even if not everyone has finished. Please complete the Questionnaire Summary Table at the bottom of your Student Consent List indicating: number of student surveys completed; number of absent students on the day of the survey administration; the number refused to complete the survey; and the number unable to complete a survey due to learning/literacy difficulties.

Thank you for completing this survey. If answering questions in this survey raises any
issues or feelings that concern you please talk to an adult you trust (e.g. parent, school counsellor, school nurse, or social worker). You can also phone the Kids Help Line. They provide free, confidential, anonymous, 24-hour telephone and online counselling service for young people aged between 5 and 18 years. I will hand out a card to everyone once all the surveys have been collected.

Please return the large yellow envelope containing all your students surveys, to the Covert Bullying Project Coordinator.

Chapter 5, Appendix 6
Quantitative Research: Quantitative Survey Confidence Intervals

125

The confidence intervals contained in this appendix, reflect the precision of the prevalence estimates for the bullying outcomes presented in Chapter 5. The confidence interval for the percentages presented give a range of values around the percentages where the true (population) prevalence can be expected to be located with 95% certainty. A smaller range indicates an estimate that is more precise. Small sample sizes with low numbers of students generate less precise estimates and will have wider confidence intervals. The confidence intervals were calculated using the technique of bootstrapping (using the R statistical package) due to the complex multistage sampling design and similarly complex weighting procedures used in this study. General Bullying Behaviour: Being bullied Q14. This term, how often were you bullied again and again by another student or group of students?
