PREFACE
What you can do
Introduction
A useful shopping list app does more than just remind you what to buy. A paper list can do that,
or even the native Notes app in every iPhone and iPod Touch. In fact, the more ways an app can
help you prepare for a shopping trip and get your shopping done at the store, the more valuable
part of your lifestyle it will be. Thousands of users world-wide have contributed most of the neat
ideas which make Grocery Gadget the smartest shopping list app today. This guide describes the
features in the latest version and suggests ways to get the most from the app to meet your
individual needs and interests.
3
A simple checklist of favorites
On the most basic level you can add items to your list throughout the day as you realize you need
particular items. At the store you can remove each item from the list as you get it. If this is all you
want to do, then you may skip to the “Adding and deleting items to your shopping list” section of
the guide, but you will miss out on many great features.
If you prefer to prepare your shopping list during a single sitting, we recommend scanning the
master list of items in order to select your needed items, and then adding all the selected items at
once to your shopping list. We also recommend removing items you will never need from the
master list, as well as adding any missing items you use, so your master list ends up being a list
of your favorite items. You can even easily add photographs of items with unique features.
The above approaches simply add and remove items from a list and work well for small lists, but
if you have large lists or want the app to be more helpful as you prepare at home and shop at the
store, you should consider reusable shopping lists, described next.
4
A systematic approach at home and at the store
We recommend adding to the shopping list all items you ever buy at the store, and reusing the list
every time you visit the store. If you visit different stores you can have a list for each one, with all
the items you ever get at each.
The app offers two modes for working with a shopping list, Prepare mode and Shop mode. Each
mode displays the information and offers the functions specific to the task at hand.
5
After you have created the reusable list, use Prepare
mode to arrange the items in any desired order. We
recommend arranging the items in the order you keep
them throughout your home: pantry, cupboard,
refrigerator, freezer, bathrooms, laundry room, etc. This
will facilitate a physical inspection of the items as you go
down the list, marking the quantity of each item you
need to buy.
When the same list is viewed at the store in Shop mode, only
those items with quantity greater than 0 are shown.
6
Between shopping trips you reset the quantity and checkmarks of the items in your reusable list in
preparation for the next trip.
The above process ensures the quickest preparation of a complete shopping list as well as the
most efficient way to complete a shopping trip. Additional optional features also help you monitor
prices and any special information you want to note about each item. An indispensible feature for
families and users who sometimes prefer working with their desktop computers is the Group
account, which automatically keeps the shopping lists synchronized in all iPhones, iPods Touch
and desktop computers connected to the group.
The next section of this guide describes in detail the use of each feature in the app. The last
section describes other topics of interest related to the app, including how to contact us with your
comments, questions, requests, suggestions and other feedback.

APP FEATURES
Preparing a list
The master list is displayed whenever you are viewing a shopping list (in Prepare or Shop mode)
and you tap the + button to add an item to the shopping list.
The items in the master list can be viewed in alphabetic order by tapping the ABC button or in
category order by tapping the Category button.
In alphabetic order, you can jump to items beginning with a desired first letter by tapping on the
letter in the index column on the right. Similarly, in category order, you can jump to items in a
desired category by tapping on the category in the index column on the right.
8
Searching the master list
You can search for a portion of an item name by tapping on the searchbox. This will display the
keyboard, and you can type the characters you want to search for and tap Search.
If the item you search for is not found, you can tap the Add New button to simultaneously add it to
both the master list and your shopping list.
9
Adding and deleting items to your shopping list
10
Changing the needed quantity of an item
You can change the quantity of an item in a shopping list by spinning the quantity thumbwheel to
the desired quantity.
If you need to enter a fractional quantity or a quantity not in the thumbwheel selector, tap on the
item in order to bring up its Details page, and tap on the Quantity box to bring up the quantity
drum.
Spin the digit dials in the drum to the desired quantity and tap Done, then tap Back.
11
Arranging items in a shopping list
You can arrange the items in your shopping list in any order you want, or you can view them
sorted alphabetically or by category.
You can use the handle of an item to drag it up or down the list to a desired location.
12
Alphabetic sort
Category sort
13
Shopping with your list
At the store, in Shop mode, you can choose one of 4 possible sort orders in which to view the
items in a shopping list.
Checkbox sort
Alphabetic sort
14
Category sort
User-arranged sort
15
Removing purchased items
To remove an item from a list in Shop mode use the swipe-delete gesture and tap the displayed
Delete button. Note you should not remove items from a list if you plan to reuse the list.
16
Reusable lists
The Shopping Lists page shows you the names of all the shopping lists you have created. At the
right of each line is a number inside a grey oval which indicates the number of items in that list
with quantity greater than zero.
To create additional shopping lists tap the + button, enter the name of the new list and tap Save.
Tap the red circle at the left of the list you want to delete and
tap the displayed Delete button.
17
To rename a list, tap the Edit button in the Shopping Lists
page and tap on the desired list.
18
Resetting for a new shopping trip
In order to reuse a list after a completed shopping trip, you may want to reset some or all of the
old quantity and purchase information.
The red reset button displays different options in Prepare and in Shop mode.
Remove all items – this option deletes all items from the shopping list (but not from the master
list).
Zero all items – this option sets to 0 the quantity of all items in the list.
Remove all bought items – this option deletes from the shopping list (but not from the master list)
all items marked with a checkmark
Zero all bought items – this option sets to 0 the quantity of all items marked with a checkmark.
Clear all checkboxes – this option clears all checkmarks and X’s from the checkboxes, and does
not affect the quantity.
We recommend the last 2 options, in that order, when planning to reuse a shopping list because
needed items which were not bought will remain in the list together with their needed quantities
for next time.
19
Updating the list
After you have reset the information from your last shopping trip in your reusable list, you are
ready to update it with the items you now need. When you view the list in Prepare mode we
recommend using the User Arrangement sort. This is the order in which you arrange items to
correspond with the actual order in which you keep them at home.
You can then easily inspect your shelves and storage areas and together go down the list using
the quantity thumbwheels to set the quantity of each item you need. The quantity of items not
needed is left at 0, and these items will not appear in your list at the store in Shop mode.
20
Using the checkboxes at the store
At the store you view your list in Shop mode and only items with quantity greater than 0 will be
displayed. As you get each items you check it off by tapping the checkbox at the right of the item.
If you are viewing the items in checkbox sort the item will move to the bottom of
the list.
You may come to an item you are not going to buy, for example, if the store is out of stock or if
the price is unacceptable. In this case tap the checkbox twice to put an X in it. This tells the app
where the item is normally found, in relation to the other items you are getting. It also lets you
know it is not one of the remaining items to be bought.
21
Modifying the master list
To modify any information about a master list item tap on the item from a shopping list.
Tap on the information you desire to change: Name, Quantity, Price, Category, Picture, or Taxes.
After completing all modifications tap Back.
Changes to the Remarks information apply only to the shopping list item, not to the master list
item. All other changes apply to the master list and all shopping lists, except changes to Price
which only apply to the master list and the current shopping list, not other shopping lists.
To add a new item to the master list, tap the Add New button in the master list page.
22
Modifying a category and adding your own
Tap Edit and tap on the category you wish to rename. Modify
the name and tap Save.
23
Deleting all items from the master list
To delete all items from the master list, tap on the + button in any shopping list and tap the Edit
button. Tap the Select All button and tap Delete.
Note if you delete all items in the master list you will have to reinstall the app in order to restore
them.
24
Adding more information to your items
Adding prices
If you add prices to your items the app will calculate and display the total amount of the items in
your list and in your shopping cart.
To add the price of an item tap on the item in a shopping list, tap the price textbox and use the
price drum to enter the price.
25
Setting taxes
You can specify up to two tax rates as well designate each item as tax exempt or not.
In order to set the tax rates, quit the app and tap on the Settings icon in the home page.
Scroll down and tap Grocery Gadget. Enter a name for the applicable tax and its percent, and
repeat if a second tax applies.
26
In order to designate an item as tax exempt, tap on the item in a shopping list and scroll down to
the Use Taxes toggle switches. Set to OFF the switch(es) which correspond to the tax(es) which
the item is exempt from.
27
Adding photos
You can move, resize and rotate the image using the built-in
photo editor, then tap Details when done.
To delete the image, tap the camera icon and tap the Delete
button.
28
Adding notes
To add a note to an item in a shopping list, tap on the item and tap on the Remarks box.
Items having remarks are shown with a yellow notepad icon in Prepare mode and Shop mode.
29
Sharing with friends, family and co-workers
Emailing a list
You can email a shopping list by tapping the email icon at the bottom left of
the Prepare mode and Shop mode pages. This will display your contacts.
After you select an email recipient, the email message will be displayed for
any final editing you may wish to make before sending it.
You may share your group name and password with other
persons having iPhones or iPods Touch with whom you want
to synchronize your information. To sign-in to an existing
group account, tap the Group button, enter the Group Name
and Password and tap Sign In.
To sign-out of the group, tap the Group button and tap the Sign out button. You should not sign-
out when the app is not in use. Any updates you make while signed-out will be overwritten next
time you sign-in.
Users signed-in to a group account will automatically stay synched to other users signed-in to the
same group, so any changes made by one user will be synched to all other users within seconds.
30
BEYOND THE APP
Sharing with your desktop computer
The web portal www.grocerygadgets.com lets you sign-in to your group account. Many users
prefer a traditional keyboard and display for working with data-intensive apps. The portal also
offers features not available with the mobile app, such as shopping list printing, cloning, merging,
export and import of recipe ingredients information.
Safari
FireFox
Internet Explorer
Chrome
Improvements are being made and new features are being added to the portal on a frequent
basis. Some “coming attractions” include store and product coupon notifications, shopping history
and analysis, store price comparisons and per-unit price comparisons.
31
Installation and configuration options
The app will load the appropriate foreign language grocery items
when it is installed with the International, Region Format setting of
your device set to Germany, France, Spanish, Russian or Japan.
Once the app is installed, the only way to change the language of
the master list items is to delete the app and re-install it again.
The app displays labels and messages in one of the following languages, according to the
International, Language setting of your device: German, French, Spanish, Russian or Japanese.
Changing the setting automatically changes the language used by the app to display labels and
messages, but it will not change the language of the master list items.
