Design II began with a group project that made students explore organizational structures found in every day life. This project took for inspiration the organizational system of a genetics laboratory, and from it was abstracted the form that will be seen in the following pages.

In this course, students were asked to combine design with the body and technology. The next two projects are studies in extending the limits of the body through the use of almost prosthetic devices. 14

PERCEPTIONS

Extension
In this project, students were asked to create a sort of prosthetic mask which combined two of the senses. The two senses chosen were sight and taste, or tongue-feel, the limits of the tongue. The device, when extended, gives the tongue greater length as it uncovers the face with the umbrella-like device. When the device is not extended, the tongue has greater flexibility, but the eyes are covered.

The device is modular in nature, using a system of hinges and triangular puzzle like pieces that fit into one another based on rotation. 20

Immobilization Extension
This device restricts the movement of the hand while simultaneously extending the fingers, allowing them to indirectly touch the back of the hand.

LERNER SPACE
This small space, made for reading and study, was to bo constructed on the Lerner Ramps. The form was taken from a series of diagrams created earlier in the semester.

In Design I, students were required to make a project to revitalize the abandoned market under a bridge in New York. It would be called Direct Fresh, and contain a multitude of services that would cater to the needs of the community.

This project explores the use of technology to create a unique shopping experience. Five technologies are used, some of which include atrium cloud technology, hydroponics, and tensegrity structures. Food is grown inside the store, and is either purchased in house or delivered. There is a cafe, bakery, and butchery, and the building also serves as a community space.

This course focused on architectural solutions for use in emergency situations--Emergency Architecture. In the class we were asked to merge two technologies to create a sort of shelter for people in dangerous situations. In my project, I chose two complex technologies, Quadror folding panels and Dshape 3D printing on the large scale, to create a rehabilitation center for the child soldiers of Uganda.

Students in this class constructed two main projects, the first, which had to do with fabricating an object out of the negative space created between their body and two surfaces, and the second, in which students were instructed to create a new social landscape in the Seagram Plaza. 36

This drawing shows the change a pile of flour goes through as passersby walk on through. The blend of peoples footprints create a sort of zone in which people lose their identities (footprints), so that the footprints of a man can be seen entering the pile, but the footprints of a dog can be seen exiting.
