KIERAN MATHERS PORTFOLIO

Produced with kind permission from my clients

Project: The Travel Corporation Corporate Website Rebuild

On the above site, I was principally responsible for the highlight text for each brand (Blue arrow). This was a careful process of refinement, as I had to isolate the key areas for each brand and then present it in a short form which would immediately catch the eye of the reader. As you can see, there are twelve items of text which are available to scroll over. I was briefed to create each of these individually to reflect the specific concerns of each brand. I also drafted the body text as well (red arrow) introducing the Travel Corporation and its key selling points. This again had to be distilled down from the existing brand marketing materials. This would have to successfully engage with the customer, ensuring they were immediately interested and then would use the links above to seek further information.

Re-drafting this page from its old format was another part of my commission. The design and text on the front page was crucial (blue arrow) as we were aiming to demonstrate the importance of our conservation project to the clients. It has to grab the customer immediately, and show the importance of our project in adding value to the brand. I was also involved in writing some of the content for the pages linking to these sites, including About Us and editing content for the Projects page.

Project: The Department

The Department is a creative and story based board game, which takes place in an imagined world where fabricated humans have taken over many roles from human workers. Players take up the role of agents working for the Department of Fabricant Affairs, investigating crimes committed by these fabricated beings. The project was instituted by the project chief, Joe Dragovich, who was instrumental in the raising of USD$5000 in independent funding from the Kickstarter website. I was brought in as chief writer for the creative fiction that would be required

In this role, I was the principal writer of all the fiction involved in this game, as demonstrated above. This is content which was used to build a sense of the world in which the game takes place, building the players enjoyment through engagement with their imaginations. It was also to create a mythology and background, allowing further products to be created as part of the expanding range relating to this game.

As part of building our brand, we also created exclusive web-fiction to attract the customer to the website. This is shown as above. This was part of our customer engagement program, as the website also links to the online shop and figure hopefully increasing sales. The web content was deliberately written in the same style as the book, carefully observing the style guide that we had created at the start of the project.

Project: BuyClub.ch Direct Mailing (Yet to be released)

Buy Club Copy June-2012 Client: Nir at Buyclub.ch Offer: 50% off Micro-needling at Clinic Lemanic Style: Direct Marketing

Opening Tag line: 'Shape up your skin for summer.' Body-text: Indulge in a revolutionary new process from Clinic Lemanic. Micro-needling, a non-invasive skin treatment, visibly reduces the signs of ageing and wrinkles in minutes. No more wrinkles, no more hiding. Be proud of your skin. Using tiny collagen injections, mico-needling helps stimulate your bodys own process to restore your skin to its natural youth. Acting as an exfoliate this also helps to let your skin breath once more. Go from age lines to vibrant skin in one short session, with results which can several months. So good, Elle magazine said they saw 'found immense improvement in fine lines' after just one treatment! Micro-needling is performed using a small roller applied straight onto the skin, and with needles going no deeper than 2mm, it causes little pain for great results. No surgery and no complications, this great new treatment is suitable for all types of skin. This is a Buyclub.ch exclusive offer by Clinic Lemanic. Based in the centre of Lausanne and easily accessible by train or car, the clinic is a leading provider of beauty and cosmetic treatments. With twenty years of experience Clinic Lemanic offers the best combination of experience and efficiency in all their procedures and after care. The offer has strictly limited numbers and will no doubt sell out quickly. So take a step towards better skin and buy today. We know you won't be disappointed by the results.

I was approached by the voucher company Buycub.ch, based in Geneva, to produce a direct mailing for their clients as above. This was for a cosmetic process called Micro-needling, which involved exfoliating the skin through a series of small injections. The company offer time limited vouchers sent to their client base, and so an engagement with their client profile was the key to the brief. This brief was accepted, and the voucher is in the process of having graphics applied and then to be released.

Project: ALICE ITS Report for CERN Chapter 5

Mechanical layout, services and integration

5.1 Introduction and System Overview

This section contains some basic considerations about the mechanical and geometrical requirements for the ITS upgrade. In section 5.1.1, the present ALICE layout is briefly described together with some considerations on how to improve the accessibility to the new ITS detector. The proposed installation principle allows the insertion of the detector inside the TPC from the Mini Frame, and will not require moving the TPC to its parking position. This results in a much faster and lighter i n t e r v e n t i o n inside the experiment that can be carried out in a winter technical stop. The requirements of the mechanical structure, for the new ITS are summarized in section 5.1.2.

5.1.1

ALICE layout and ITS a c c e s s i b i l i t y

The present layout of the ALICE central barrel, with the TPC and ITS detectors, is shown in figure 5.1. The location of the four patch-panels (PP1 to PP4) for the ITS services (power cables, cooling pipes and data links) is also shown in this figure. The ITS is connected to both A and C sides: the services coming from the A-side (from PP1 to PP2) are housed in the service-chariot (SC), while those coming from the C-side (from PP4 to PP3) are routed in cable-trays placed along the front absorber (FA). The layout of the present ITS detector is shown in figure 5.2. The ITS is made of two distinct parts: the SPD and the SDD-SSD barrel. These two parts are installed separately and attached together in correspondence of the cones, which are also used to hold the services in place. The SDDSSD and the SPD services (not shown) are routed respectively outside and inside the SPD cone. The ITS is fixed to the inner aperture of the TPC by two hooks which are located at the top of the SDD-SSD cones. FMD2 and FMD-3 are attached to the ITS, while V0 and T0 are supported on the front-absorber and beampipe respectively. The beampipe is attached to FMD-2 and FMD-3 and the central valve

The above is produced with kind permission from CERN. Due to the report still being a work in progress, I only have permission to reproduce a single page from the work. Chapter 5 is indicative of the work I have continued with the ALICE ITS report. Proofing for good use of language was the first part of the job, and then engaging with the details such as sentence structure and style guidance for the whole document. For example, I brought in the style of starting with a summary paragraph, separate from the body text, to aid the reader in looking at the

document. I also brought up the style of the document, ensuring that there were sufficient paragraphs breaks to allow the readers eyes to rest. While still technical, the document is much more readable than it once was. I have also worked to homogenise the numerous varieties of English which had been used, as this document was collated from seven different departments and therefore seven different writers. For most, written English is a second or even third language. This project is still on-going, with the final report to be issued sometime in September pending approval by the CERN board.
