He received a B.A. in Medieval History from Harvard University (19 61), and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago (1966), where he studied under David M. Schneider. He conducted fieldwork among the Daribi of Ka rimui, in the Simbu Province of Papua New Guinea, as well as the Usen Barok of N ew Ireland. Wagner taught at Southern Illinois University and Northwestern Unive rsity before accepting the chairmanship of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Virginia, where he currently teaches. He resides in Charlottesvil le, Virginia. Wagner has been probably one of the world's most influential anthropologists. Wa gner is known for his eccentric teaching style and is loved by many of his stude nts. His book The Invention of Culture (1975; 1981) is considered a classic of e thnography and theory, and has been translated into Japanese, Portuguese and Ita lian. His concepts of symbolic obviation, figure-ground reversal, analogic kinsh ip, holography and fractality of personhood have been critical in the developmen t of anthropological theory in the last decades. Anthropologists influenced by W agner include Marilyn Strathern, Jadran Mimica, James Weiner, and Eduardo Viveir os de Castro.
