The building site is located near the centre of Bucharest, between a residential dwelling zone and the monumental Museum of the Socialist Republic of Romania. The simple exterior expression of the building, as well as the variation in height pays respect to the historical surroundings, multitudinous as they are. The landscaping around the building was designed so that it creates a friendly and inviting atmosphere, a location where pavement, vegetation and water offer a public space of high quality. The design theme includes different functions: performance spaces (a large performance hall with 650 seats, and a small one with 250 seats), two cinemas (300, and 140 seats), a library, classrooms for workshops and arts learning, a generous exhibition space, relaxation spaces, as well as a culture-oriented shopping mall. Coffee shops and a small restaurant with a view allow visitors to enjoy a cup of tea or a good meal between engaging in more formative activities. The multipurpose atrium connects areas through a vertical, skylight space. It contains the main vertical circulations (elevators, sculptural stairways and mechanical escalators) that give the space a buzzing, dynamic feeling. The atrium may be used as a foyer, exhibition space and performance space. The atriums feeling that is both a connector and a function in itself is highlighted by the elevated plaza that precedes it, the plaza being, in its own right, a zone that belongs to the street and to the Centre alike.

Erstens muss das neue Gebude der zentralen Universittsbibliothek in Cluj Raum fr die Ausweitung der Lageraum fr Bcher sicherstellen. Dies wird durch offene Bibliothek gelst; eine Lsung fast ausschlielich fr moderne Bibliotheken. Nebeneinanderstel Dadurch wird es eine Nebeneinanderstellung der Lagerumen mit den Lesesle, in einer funktionalen Konfiguration, die den freien Zugang zu Bcher bietet, beabsichtigt. Damit wird es eine direkte und einfache Verbindung zwischen dem Leser und dem Buch sichergestellt und die Wartezeit, aber auch die unntige Arbeitskrfte eliminiert. Die berlappung der Funktionen von Lage-und Leseraum fhrt zu einer Einsparung von Oberflchen - mit positiven Auswirkungen auf Investitionsbudget. Die natrliche Beleuchtung ist eine Prioritt fr die Lesesle. Die rumliche und einfach volumetrische Konzeption muss mit einer schlichten architektonischen Sprache assoziert werden, in deren Rahmen die opaken und aus Glas Plne die Ausdruskkraft der Fassaden sicherstellen werden. Die Einbeziehung des Neubautes im aufgebauten Kontext des Gebietes sollte durch eine neutrale, sorgfltig dosierte Volumetrie durchgefhrt werden. Die architektonische Sprache sollte die zeitgenssischen Stillrichtungen wiederspielen und die Nachbildung von formalen oder materialen Elementen vom eklektischen Gebude vermieden werden.

Union Square is a place of great historical importance for Romania in general and Iasi in particular. Here, the unification of two of the three major romanian provinces was celebrated. The Square was re-designed in the 60s, when appartment blocks and a hotel were built to replace historical houses demolished by the communist regime. Today, the architecture students are called to update the Square into the 21st century. The neon lighitng and the green spaces that we suggested for the intervention would bring even more dynamic to the area - which is already a major pedestrian hub. However, we realize that an upgrade in the urban furniture would be necessary, so we proposed a series of multipurpose modules. In respect to the auto traffic, we buried the motorway, leaving only the tramway at the surface, because of its historical relevance and charm. To adress the increasing problem of parking in the center of cities, we expanded the parking lot by placing it also underground.

The memory of a city lives through the buildings that marked its evolution, therefore this historical fragment of the city was the major element that generates the subdued proposal. We have created a public space at the same level with the Cathedral that becomes an urban balcony opened to the city landscape and nature. The project proposes three public spaces connected to each other, but on different levels. The biggest public space is at the highest level and it is connected to the next public space which marks the main entrance to the art museum and info center. The third plaza connects to the one above it and offers a lush green ambiance. The art museum and the info center stand out through their transparency. The different opacity used has a simbolic element: art is extroverted, putting light on the feelings and emotions that became symbols, while studying is encouraged by a discrete, introverted environment. light The exhibition space is varied (natural lighting vs artificial lighting, enclosed vs free) and intertwines with resting and commercial functions (cafe, bookshop). The aula and its foyer contain eating and relaxation places. It can function independently, which generates new opportunities for the revitalization of the area by organizing congresses, conferences and shows.

The project was meant to bring together a complex mix of office spaces, a shopping mall, and an entertainment area with a focus on the audio-visual. The choice of a monolythical volume came natural, as teh functions from the project merged together closer and closer. Also, this alowed the ground spaces to remain free and made way for monumental landscaping. The office tower stands tall above all other spaces, signifying the major project requirement as well as bein a social commentary on the prevalence of in-doors work, in contrast with the free park downstairs. The facade is, in itself, a feat of engineering: it allows for pedestrians to look inside at certain angles, whereas at other angles, the glass seems opaque. Apart from sheltering the workers inside from the sunrays, this special type of glass stands for the complex relationship between transparency and obscurity in todays corporations.
