Std 10 EXAM PRIMER 1 50 marks Chapter 1 Force Contact forces and Non-contact forces; C.G.S and S.I. units, Turning forces concept; moment of force; forces in equilibrium; centre of gravity (discussions using simple examples and simple direct problems) Chapter 2 Work, Energy and Power Work, energy and power and their relation with force, Different types of energy, Energy sources, and principle of conservation of energy. Chapter 4 Refraction of light with plane surfaces Refractions of light through glass block and triangular prism, qualitative treatment of simple application such as real and apparent depth of objects in water and apparent bending of sticks in water. Total internal reflection; Critical angle; examples in triangular glass prisms; comparisons with reflections from a plane mirror (qualitative only) Chapter 5- Refraction through a lens Lenses (converging and diverging) including characteristics of the image formed (using ray diagrams only.) magnifying glass, location of images using ray diagrams and thereby determining magnification (sign convention and problems using the lens formulae are excluded.) Chapter 6 Spectrum Using a triangular prism to produce a visible spectrum from white light. Electromagnetic spectrum. Scattering of light EXAM PRIMER 2 - 80 marks In addition to the syllabus of Exam Primer 1, the following topics will be assessed. Chapter 3 Machines Machines as force multipliers, load, effort, mechanical advantage, velocity ratio and efficiency; simple treatment of levers; inclined plane and pulley systems showing the utility of each type of machines. Chapter 7 Sound Reflection of sound waves; echoes, their use; simple numerical problems on echoes, Forced, Natural vibrations, resonance (through examples), Loudness, pitch, and quality of sound Chapter 8 Current Electricity Ohms law, concepts of e.m.f, potential difference; resistance in series and parallel; simple direct problems using combinations of resistors in circuits Chapter 9 Electrical Power and household circuits Electrical Power and energy, Household circuits: main circuiting, switches, fuses, earthing, safety precautions, three in plugs, colour coding of wires. 2013-14

Chapter 10 - Electro-magnetism Magnetic effects of current (principles only, laws not required); Electromagnetic induction (elementary); transformer Chapter 11 Calorimetery Specific heat capacities, Principles of method of mixtures, Problems on specific heat capacity using heat loss and gain and the method of mixtures. Latent heat; loss and gain of heat involving change of state for fusion only. Green house effect Chapter 12 Thermionic Emission and Radioactivity Thermionic emission; simple qualitative treatment of a hot cathode ray tube, Radioactivity and changes in the nucleus; background radiation and safety precautions PRE-BOARD EXAM - 80 marks The syllabus of Exam Primer 1 and 2 will be assessed.
