Load Factors and Power Supplies

Installing I/O Network Boards: Power Supplies, Enclosures and Alternative Mounting
Each of the boards made for use in the I/O network has a load factor. There are three power supply types. The IOPS will supply power to any group of boards whose load factors total 7 or less. The IOPS2 will handle up to a load factor total of 26. The IOPSWM is a plug-in power supply which will handle any single I/O device. The load factors of the I/O boards are as follows:

I/O Device RO8 or RO8S SI8 OI8 or OIL8 VO2 LD 1000 OAB-1 OVR8

Load Factor 2 1 1 1 2 1 1

The IOPS Power Supply The Danfoss IOPS power supply is designed to provide 12 VAC for a number of I/O boards with an aggregate load factor of 7 or less. Be careful to observe the maximum power supply cable lengths given in the table on the instruction sheet (there is a copy in Appendix B). Line voltage to the power supply can be either 110 VAC or 220 VAC, and is selected by positioning a plug-in jumper as for the AKC 55. If 120 VAC power is applied to an IOPS power supply with the jumpers set for 220 VAC, and the output voltage is connected to I/O boards, the green LEDs on the I/O boards will be lighted, but it will not be possible to bring the I/O boards on line.

Dont let the load factor total exceed 7 on an IOPS !

The IOPS2 Power Supply The Danfoss IOPS2 power supply is designed to provide 15 VDC for a number of I/O boards with an aggregate load factor of 26 or less. Cable lengths from the IOPS2 power supply to I/O boards must be in accordance with the table in the IOPS2 instruction sheet (there is a copy in Appendix B). The IOPSWM Power Supply

The IOPSWM plugs into a 120 VAC outlet and supplies power to any single I/O device.

IO4R Enclosure

The IO4R rainproof enclosure contains an IOPS power supply to provide 12 VAC to the I/O boards mounted in it up to a load factor total of 7 (see the IOPS instruction sheet in Appendix B. The IO4R enclosure has four 3" snap tracks and is designed to contain 4 full-size I/O boards (RO8, SI8, or OI8). Since VO2 boards are comparatively short, one or more of the snap-tracks can be used for two VO2s. The enclosure is provided with rear mounting holes and has labeled cable knockouts for class 1 and class 2 wiring in both top and bottom.

IO12 Enclosures

The IO12 enclosure series allow for mounting up to twelve I/O boards of any mixture per enclosure. Each IO12 contains one or more IOPS power supplies as follows: IO12-1 IO12-2 IO12-3 IO12-4 1 2 3 4 IOPS IOPS IOPS IOPS

Alternative Mounting for I/O Boards

In OEM control panels or other enclosed spaces where the IO4R enclosure is not appropriate, snap track for I/O boards can be mounted on any flat surface where codes and good electrical practice permit. A Danfoss IOPS-series (IOPS, IOPS2, or IOPSWM) 12 VAC or 15 VDC power supply should be used to provide operating voltage for I/O boards not mounted in Danfoss I/O enclosures.

RO8 Description and Identification

Installing RO8 and RO8S Relay Output Boards

RO8 and RO8S Relay Output boards are identical except for the override switches found on the RO8S board. The RO8 Relay Output board provides 8 relay outputs in an AKC 55 system for control of a variety of loads. Normally open, normally closed, and common terminals are furnished for each RO8 output. RO8 outputs are individually fused at 5 amps. Each output has an LED which lights when the relay coil is energized. Each RO8 or RO8S is supplied with two spare relay fuses in holders at the right edge of the board. Since they are nodes on the I/O network, RO8 and RO8S boards communicate with a host AKC 55 over TP-78K twisted-pair shielded cable. The boards name and version number are printed on the board as shown in the illustration below:

Mounting

RO8 and RO8S boards are designed for 3" snaptrack mounting in either a Danfoss IO4R or IO12 enclosure, an OEM control panel, or other enclosed spaces. Snaptrack for I/O boards can be mounted on any flat surface where codes and good electrical practice permit. A Danfoss power supply (IOPSseries) should be used to provide operating power for I/O boards not mounted in a Danfoss IO4R or IO12 enclosure. Select mounting locations so that the wiring distance between the RO8 and its power supply is in accordance with the table on the appropriate IOPS-series instruction sheet (see Appendix B).

Addressing an RO8 or RO8S

Each RO8 board connected to an AKC 55 must have a unique address in the range 01-99. The address is set by the two rotary switches located side-by-side beneath the boards status and service LEDs. Each switch has an arrow pointer which serves also as a screwdriver slot. Use a small screwdriver to rotate the arrowhead on each switch until the left arrowhead points to the first digit, and the right arrowhead to the second digit of the correct address.

Network Connections

RO8 and RO8S boards are connected to the I/O network at the terminal strip labeled NETWORK. When connecting from board to board (point-to-point or daisy-chain wiring), use only twisted-pair cable meeting the specifications given in the illustration below. There is no polarity to observe; connect the two signal wires to the terminals labeled A and B, and the cable shield to the terminal labeled shield.

Youve heard this before....Terminate the last board on every main I/O cable run!

Controlled Load Connections

Each load to be controlled is connected to a relay output by wiring to the common (C) and either the normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) screw terminal on one of the eight sets of terminals along the bottom edge of the board.

RO8 Power Connections

As with all I/O boards in the AKC 55 system, 12 VAC from a Danfoss IOPS-series power supply is connected to a terminal strip labeled 12 VAC on the RO8 board. The power terminal strip is shown in the upper left corner of the illustration.

Make sure the distance from your IOPS-series power supply to the I/O board is within the limits given in the table in the IOPS instruction sheet !

Inspection of the Installed RO8

When an RO8 Relay Output Board is ready for operation, you should be able to observe the following, proceeding clockwise around the board from the power terminal strip: 1. Power (12 VAC or 15 VDC) has been connected to the 12 VAC terminal strip. 2. The status LED should be blinking. If the status LED is off, there is no power to the board (check the fuses). If the status LED is constantly on (not blinking), the board is not communicating with its AKC 55. Make sure the AKC 55 has been configured for this board; if configured, there will be information in at least one of the Board and Points screens; you can investigate, and supply configuration information, if necessary, by following the procedures described in Section IV of this manual. 3. The service LED will normally blink briefly when the network is scanned, but if the service LED remains steadily on, or blinks repeatedly, the RO8 board is defective and should be replaced. 4. The address switches have been set to a valid address. 5. Loads are connected to one or more of the terminal strips numbered from 1 to 8. When a control action by the AKC 55 causes a relay coil to be energized, the outputs LED lights. 6. Connection has been made to the I/O network of an AKC 55 at the NETWORK terminal. 7. If this board is the last node on a main run, make sure that it is terminated by using one of the terminators supplied with the AKC 55.
