Quota system may be
abolished, says Hisham

PUTRAJAYA: Future Umno elections may see the
abolition of the quota system if the proposal were
approved by the delegates of a special assembly to
be held end of the year.
Party vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin
Hussein said the Constitution Amendment Techni-
cal Committee which met yesterday has agreed to
bring the motion to the assembly.
“As soon as the proposal is approved, the party
constitution will be immediately amended,” he told
a press conference after chairing the meeting here
yesterday.
The qualification to contest for the presiden-
tial seat needs at least 30% out of the 191 Umno
divisions, deputy president (20%), vice-presidents
(10%) and supreme council members (5%).
Hishammuddin said with the abolishment of the
quota system, any members who feel they qualify
for the post can offer themselves.
“This is seen as an effort which is more trans-
parent, free and gives more chance to anybody to
offer themselves and hold a position if they received
support from members,” he added.
Puteri Umno gets two years to restore party image
PUTRAJAYA: Puteri Umno has been given two
years to help restore Umno’s image and change
society’s negative perception of the party especially
among the younger generation.
Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin
Yassin said the time frame was given to ensure that
Puteri Umno would be more focused in carrying
out its task.
“The important thing is for the movement to
step up its effort by organising more community-
based programmes, especially for youths so that
they will be with us.
“Information programmes must also be intensi-
fied to counter distortion of facts by certain quarters
which can affect support for Umno,” he said after
meeting with Puteri Umno leaders at his office.

SHAH ALAM: PAS will be looking into ways
and means in its upcoming muktamar (annual
general meeting) from June 5 to 7 to deal with
the “rejuvenated” Umno under the leader-
ship of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul
Razak, its Selangor commissioner, Datuk Dr
“For example, Najib has chosen to lead
Selangor and I am sure the state must be
one of the most wanted states by the Barisan
Nasional. We have to be responsive and as
PAS, we need to come out with measures
and tactics,” he told a press conference
here.
“We should also have the right political
reading and I am confident the delegates will
be able to suggest to us on how to deal with
the Umno, which had had a rejuvenation
process (after the Umno election in March).”
Hasan said the party might discuss the
performance of its elected representatives
who have been given some responsibility in
the states governed by Pakatan Rakyat to see
whether they had performed up to the party’s
expectation.
He said the party might also discuss the
next general election because “Najib needs
to get a fresh mandate from the people on his
leadership, so we expect the general election
to come earlier than 2013.
“PAS may also touch on the strengthening
the party’s inter and intra relationship with
Pakatan component parties like DAP and Parti
Keadilan Rakyat as well as its divisions.
“I believe there are still room for im-
provement and we may get some inputs

In addition, he said the committee also has
considered the proposal to hold division meetings
and elections simultaneously at all levels involving
some 60,000 members.
He said it was seen as a more realistic approach
in terms of logistic compared to simultaneous
meetings at branch level which would involve a
much bigger group of some 3.4 million members.
He also said the committee would also recom-
mend certain measures of improvements such as
to facilitate payment of nomination fees, to open
membership to NGO members and easy member-
ship registration process through modern technol-
ogy such as information technology.
Hishammuddin, who is also Terengganu Umno
liaison chairman, said he had a meeting with Men-
tri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, former mentri
besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh and all division heads
as well as all assemblymen on Wednesday to trash
out the problems faced by the party.
“This is the first time involving all parties with
interest. Alhamdulillah, all groups have realised
the importance of giving priority to the party’s and
state interests,” he said, adding the perception that
there are fractions and groups within the party
must be put to an end.
Asked whether the two-year period was
sufficient for Puteri Umno to achieve the target,
Muhyiddin was confident that the movement was
up to the challenge.
“It is not long, so Puteri Umno has a big respon-
sibility and must be proactive and not act only after
something has happened,” he said.
On Barisan Nasional component parties at the
supreme council meeting recently agreeing to the
proposed setting up of Puteri BN, Muhyiddin said
he welcomed the idea, although it was left to the
component parties to decide and was not a direc-
tive.

be representatives from the young group in society

However, he said the resolutions for the
muktamar are yet to be finalised and a com-
mittee led by information chief Mahfuz Omar
has been set up to go through all proposed
resolutions submitted from the divisions and
decide which are the important resolutions
that will be debated during the muktamar.
Hasan also said the voting for the deputy
president, three vice-presidents and 18 execu-
tive committee members’ posts will begin at
3pm on the first day of the muktamar after
the opening address by party president Datuk
Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
“I was told by our party election director
(Datuk Mustafa Ali) that the polling results
will be announced as and when (they are
ready), whenever the situation is possible.
This is unlike the previous elections when
the results were announced only at the final
stage,” he said.
“This is the outcome from the past discus-
sions the leaders had and also the demand
of the party members who wished to see an-
nouncements are being made through out the
counting process.”
Hasan disclosed that the elections for
the uztaz, youth and women wings will be
conducted on June 4, a day before the central
election.
He also said the muktamar will be attended
by 1,000 delegates and about 6,000 observers
from all 137 divisions.
On the nomination for him to contest the
vice-presidency, Hasan, who had held the
post for two terms, said he has yet to decide
whether he will accept to nomination to
contest, but it is fine for him if he is given the
chance to make a comeback.
