collection of hauiths, as collecteu by the esteemeu scholai Imam
An-Nawawi. It is a collection that has gaineu populaiity uue to its
compiehensive natuie; tiying to encompass all aspects of attaining
a sacieu life, both foi the scholai anu laypeison alike.

This small anu basic explanation is a collection of my notes that I as
a laypeison hau wiitten foi my own self. Bowevei, uue to the
natuie anu compiehensiveness of the hauiths, I felt it was best foi
me to allow othei laypeisons like myself to also benefit fiom it. The
explanations aie as commentateu on by the !"#$%%&'#, Shaykh Bi.

Scholais agieeu that it is a weak hauith uespite its many lines of

Aslam Al-Tusi, the gouly scholai, then Al-Basan bin Sufiyan Al-

This hauith is founu in many hauith collections, incluuing in
Bukhaii fiom Imam Nalik. Eveiyone agiees that this hauith is one
of the founuations of Islam, with Imam Ahmau mentioning this
being one of the funuamental thiee hauiths of Islam. What is
suipiising howevei is that foi the fiist foui geneiations, it only hau
a single naiiatoi in each chain. Bowevei, when it went to Yahya, it
spieau to ovei thiee hunuieu people. Bukhaii himself mentions
this hauith seven times, with the fiist time incluuing only the fiist
pait.

Imam An-Nawawi staiteu this collection with the hauith to
emphasise that this is a funuamental aspect of Islam, anu that
eveiything staits with one's )&**$# (intention).

Abuui Rahman ibn Nahui saiu iegaiuing this hauith, that it shoulu
be the beginning of eveiy chaptei. Imam Shafi'i commenteu that it
coulu be useu foi seventy chapteis ueuicateu to knowleuge. Imam
Ahmau, Abu Bawuu, Tiimiuhi anu many moie all agieeu that this
hauith is equal to one-thiiu of ieligion.

Theie aie two types of )&**$#: the minu anu the heait. The minu is
that which makes cleai to one what he is to uo. The heait is one
that makes it sinceie, so that it is only foi the sake of Allah. These
two aie cleaily uiffeient as one coulu make a cleai intention with
the minu to piay +$(,, but if the action is not sinceie anu foi show -
then it is not coiiect. Foi this ieason, some even say that the )&**$#
of the tongue is a -&%.$# (innovation), as it shoulu be fiom the

heait. This )&**$# shoulu accompany the action at all times, as
sinceiity is something that cannot be agieeu foi many actions at
one time. As mentioneu by Nalik, the intention foi fasting the
whole of Ramauan can be uone at the beginning of the month,
howevei, this is only a iefeience to the intention of the minu.

Theie is no uoubt about the authenticity of the naiiatoi of this
hauith. 0pon ieauing, it seems that the fiist sentence is being
iepeateu twice, but in fact it is not. The fiist pait is the /#$,&.$# anu
the intention of the slave himself, but the seconu pait is what Allah
gives him in ietuin foi his intention.

Shaykh Abul Basan Ali Nauwi mentions that the pioblem with
Nuslims is not that they have bau intentions, but simply that they
uo not have any intentions. Shaykh Akiam Nauwi auus that to this
by mentioning that we uo many simple things such as eating with
the iight hanu etc., but we fail to make the intention of /"))$#
(piophetic saying, piactice oi appioval) anu theiefoie may not
ieap its benefits.

The seconu pait of the hauith coulu possibly iefei to the situation
of the ($#$$-& (companion) who emigiateu to Nauinah to maiiy
0mm Nuqais, anu this hauith claiifies that it is not the same as the
iewaiu foi making #&0,$# (migiation) foi the sake of Allah. It coulu
also be that the hauith coulu iefei to othei than this, oi foi moie
than this.

This hauith is so impoitant that some people of 1&2#
(juiispiuuence) say that it is possible to ueiive thiee hunuieu
iulings fiom this hauith. Shaykh Akiam Nauwi notes that one of his
teacheis mentioneu that it is not even thiee hunuieu, but only one;
(&)34,&'*. If one weie to uo thiee hunuieu goou ueeus but was not
sinceie in any, then it is to no avail. Yahya ibn Kathii (consiueieu to
be one of the six pillais of hauith naiiation) saiu one shoulu leain
how to make an intention, as it is bettei than +$56 (goou conuuct).

Sufyan Thawii mentions that he nevei founu anything moie
uifficult than that of making )&**$#, as it is always changing. Nafi

The haiuest thing foi one's ego is sinceiity, as that is one in which
man cannot show off.

This hauith contains all of ieligion. In fact, it is so impoitant that a
laige numbei of scholais begin theii woiks with this hauith. In this
iegaiu, Imam An-Nawawi mentioneu this hauith aftei his
commentaiy of Nuslim.

This hauith is founu naiiateu fiom many of the ($#$$-$, but mainly
useu fiom 0mai (RA) anu Abu Buiayiah (RA). The naiiation of
0mai (RA) is piefeiieu ovei that of Abu Buiayia (RA) as it is moie
complete. This collection incluues the naiiation fiom 0mai (RA)
fiom the collection of Nuslim, while Bukhaii only has the naiiation
fiom Abu Buiayia (RA), which Nuslim also has.

The station in which this hauith took place was a high place that
the ($#$$-$ hau built, so that they coulu all see the Piophet (SAW)
(Abu Bawuu), when suuuenly this man appeaieu befoie them. If
one came fiom afai, his clothes will not be so clean as that of this
man, anu his haii will be uusty - which is why the non-appeaiance
of these aie emphasiseu by 0mai (RA) in this hauith. If he uiu not
have these, he must be local, but he was not. No one knew him in
Nauinah.

Anothei thing to note fiom this hauith is that one shoulu weai theii
best clothes in fiont of otheis. In the past, Nuslims useu to gieet
each othei in theii best clothes. Fiom these, the best is the white
cloth as this is also useu in the giave as the final uiess, as well as in
weuuings. But this is not necessaiy as the Piophet (SAW) woie
many colouis - the main thing is to be clean anu of goou
appeaiance. These aie all pait of Islam, anu it is not against it - the
only time beautification is against Islam is when aiiogance anu
extiavagance enteis it. The notions of being uiity to please Allah
enteieu into thought fiom outsiue influences. In one stoiy, Faiqat,
(who was a gieat ascetic) was helu back by Basan Al-Basii. Be tolu
him that piety is not fiom ones clothes. Theiefoie, to make one's
appeaiance as goou as possible is a ("))$#.

The clean anu well-uiesseu man came anu sat with the Piophet
(SAW). In this hauith, the 7($6$$5< is not mentioneu, but theie is no

(SAW) uislikeu because of this. But Allah was happy with Wahshi
(RA) as he became a Nuslim afteiwaius. Similaily, A'isha (RA) hau

Allah nevei lies oi bieaks Bis piomise. Be tells his slaves that we

Similaily, we aie all nakeu unless he clothes us - so we shoulu ask

coveis all of this foi us anu is still available foi us to ask foi Bis
foigiveness. If someone is uiity of sin, theie is no way to puiify his
self but to tuin to Allah. If he weie to tuin to people, they will enjoy

puiify it. All he has to uo is ask foi foigiveness.

We can nevei come close to Allah; we cannot haim him noi benefit
him. Even if the whole of mankinu anu jinn tiieu to become like the
most pious peison of all, it will not inciease anything in Bis
kinguom. So when we ask foi guiuance, it is of no benefit to Bim,
but only to benefit ouiselves. Similaily, if we weie to join togethei
anu be like the woist of cieation, like that of Shaytan, it will not
ueciease anything at all fiom Bis kinguom.

If we all stoou togethei anu askeu foi all that we uesiieu, it will not

Whatevei we uo, Allah keeps them foi us anu we will be iewaiueu
