July 1, 2013 Dear Parent/Guardian: This registration packet is an essential part of beginning a successful school year at Glenbard West. The purpose of this information is to provide you with all of the details required to prepare for the upcoming school year. Please take time to examine every page carefully so that you understand the process involved with registration, book acquisition, and other steps important to a good start. Please note that we are sending one registration packet per family. If you have more than one student attending Glenbard, you will be able to register and pay for each student via our online registration system. Here are some important things to remember: Online Registration & Payment Our easy to use system will streamline your registration and payment process. A flier is enclosed in this packet that explains the steps to follow to register your student. Online registration will be available starting July 15. Note: If you do not have Internet access, computers are available at school during summer evening hours and your local library has computers available. Registration and payment of fees are due by midnight Aug. 8. Please follow the system prompts to pay your fees online. Registration payments made after Aug. 8 will be assessed a $35 late fee. Registration and payment of fees are required prior to students receiving books and schedules during back-to-school week. Back-to-school week Back-to-school week will be held Thursday, August 15, through Tuesday, August 20th. It is important that students attend on their scheduled day. During back-to-school week, students will receive their class schedules and textbooks; purchase consumable items (e.g. workbooks, novels, PE uniforms and goggles); have their ID/yearbook pictures taken and receive transportation information, if applicable. Textbook Rental Program We offer a textbook rental program that provides an efficient and affordable approach to providing textbooks. The annual textbook rental fee per student is $125, which covers all textbooks issued to your student. Students will receive their textbooks during back-to-school week in August. Consumable items such as workbooks, paperback novels, PE uniforms and goggles are not included in the $125 textbook rental fee and must be purchased during back-to-school week. Please note that all textbooks rented from the bookstore must be turned back in similar condition at the end of the year to avoid charges. New: Extended lunch period with academic support Beginning this year, we will implement an adjusted schedule that gives students more time during the school day and greater opportunity for success. The Board of Education approved this schedule in April. The 2013-2014 school day schedule will feature an 8-period day that includes 48-minute periods, including lunch. The 48-minute lunch provides time for all students to access academic assistance and get a head start on their homework. Students may use the extended lunch period to: Join subject area study groups Visit the test center to make up assessments Meet with their guidance counselor Attend study skills sessions

Every year we look for ways to improve the overall educational experience for our students. We are so grateful for the families and parent groups who support us in this endeavor. Glenbard West is committed to serving our students and communities every day. As principal, I am dedicated to meeting the challenges of our future while maintaining the pride, tradition and excellence that has come to define Glenbard West. I am looking forward to seeing all of you in August for the beginning of another exciting school year. Sincerely, Peter Monaghan

June 2013

The Glenbard West Boosters would like to welcome you to the upcoming 2013-2014 school year. Great high schools are significantly enhanced by the involvement and support of the entire community. One of the best ways to show your support is to join the Glenbard West Boosters. Here are some facts about the Boosters: Membership revenues represent about 40% of our revenue. West is the only D87 school to provide financial assistance to academic, athletic, and extra-curricular activities, raising about $130,000 annually. Activity passes provide admission to most district-wide sporting and music events. Your support will assist in continuing the Pride, Tradition and Excellence that are the hallmarks of Glenbard West High School. We look forward to another great year and our sincere hope is that the entire community takes advantage of all Glenbard West has to offer! To learn more please visit: www.gwboosters.com. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! Sign up and pay for Boosters membership on-line at www.gwboosters.com/join.html during the school registration process. 2013-2014 Community Action Resource Education (CARES) Safe House Network

The CARES Parent Connection invites you to sign the Safe House Pledge. Families that sign the pledge are identified in the VIP Directory. The goals of the pledge are: To ensure that our childrens social activities are properly chaperoned and are alcohol and drug free. To provide a communication network for parents that enables them to feel comfortable calling one another with questions regarding any social activity. Carefully read the Safe House Pledge below. If you agree, please make a check mark in the space provided.

CARES Safe House Pledge

1. I will encourage wholesome activities for our children, by actively chaperoning and prohibiting the use of alcohol, tobacco or any other drug by minors in our home.
2. My student does not have my permission to attend social activities in homes or other locations where no adult is present. 3. I agree to communicate with the appropriate adults to ensure that events outside of our homes are actively chaperoned and do not include the use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs by minors. 4. I encourage calls from other parents before social activities to verify my commitment to this pledge. 5. Because I understand that my home could be a potential party site in my absence, I will inform friends and neighbors of the Safe House Network goals and request their cooperation during my absences. 6. I will allow Glenbard West High School to note that I have signed the pledge in the VIP Student Directory so that other parents know of my commitment to these principles. I, _______________________, have discussed this pledge with my Glenbard West student. I have read the CARES Safe House Pledge and I wish to participate in the pledge program. Please identify my name in the VIP Directory, the Glenbard West student phone directory. Please return this sheet to: Glenbard West High School-CARES, 670 Crescent Blvd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.
