B52 in Huu tiep lake

The B52 historical remains in Huu Tiep lake - Hanoi The B52 historical remains in Huu Tiep lake - Hanoi

The B52 historical remains in Huu Tiep Lake in Ngoc Ha Precinct, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi, is hard evidence of the glorious victory of the people and the soldiers of Vietnam over Americans. From the end of 1967, the Vietnamese Communist Party and the Government had anticipated the expansion of the American war to the north with the participation of its B52 fleet in order to save the American Army from defeat. On December 18th, 1972, the American Army forces launched the expected. The bombing lasted for 12 days, from December 18th to December 29th. [ Although 40 years have passed, the memories of the US terrible carpet-bombing attack on Hanoi and some other cities in the North in the winter of 1972 are always in the minds of Hanoians. During the US 12 day long Linebacker II operation, 444 flights of B.52 bombers and over 1,000 flights of tactical airplanes dropped over 10,000 tonnes of bombs (equal to 5 atomic bombs of the kind that the US used to drop in Hirosima, Japan) on Hanoi with the aim of sending Hanoi back to the stone age. The attack killed 2,380 locals and injured 1,355 ] Thanks to improved forces, war strategies and an undaunted will, the army and people of Vietnam defeated the US air blitz on Hanoi, shooting down 34 B52 Stratefortresses out of 81 airplanes of different kinds and killing and capturing alive hundreds of pilots. The aerial victory 40 years ago has become a momentous historical event, showing the intelligence, solidarity and war strategy of the Vietnamese people. It was completely defeated by Hanoi citizens and soldiers: 25 B52 aircraft were shot down. Especially, the B52G was shot down on December 7th by battalion 72. The aircraft broke into pieces and fell on Ngoc Ha Precinct, particularly in Huu Tiep Lake. The remains are mostly under water. The visible part is about one-meter high, two wide and four long. It was the middle of the aircraft including the steering wheels. From the southeast side of the lake, you can see the America Air Force insignia: a white star in a black circle with a diameter of about 30cm. The B52 historical remains in the 38mx42m Huu Tiep Lake is the only vestige of the resounding "Dien Bien Phu in the air" battle. The remains were recognized as a national historical monument by the Ministry of Culture and Information on April 22nd, 1992.
