Mr. A. M. Naik heads an organisation that is among the most admired companies in the country, reputed for the technological sophistication that characterises its projects and products, for its contribution to the development of indigenous engineering capability and, most of all, for its inherent professionalism and the value systems that lie at its core. Few heads of companies mirror the values of the organisation as faithfully as Mr. Naik. Dynamism, professionalism and a high ethical quotient are synonymous with Mr. Naik.

Joining the Company as a Junior Engineer in 1965, Mr. Naik rapidly rose to positions of increasing responsibility as he moved from General Manager to Managing Director and CEO, culminating in his appointment as Chairman on December 29, 2003. Mr. Naik has successfully led the Company through some of its most challenging times and enabled it to emerge stronger. His broad global perspective has seen the Company expanding its horizons beyond domestic frontiers, positioning itself to become a true international player.

Mr. Naik spearheaded the move to de-merge L&Ts cement business to unlock value for shareholders. He played an active part in conceptualising the proposal of an Employees Foundation/ Trust to strengthen the employees sense of belonging and to enable L&T retain its identity and unique character. Mr. Naik infused a global perspective into L&Ts business orientation. This involved much more than increasing the international component of the Companys turnover. It meant changing mindsets and institutionalising systems to benchmark virtually every critical activity in the Company against international standards. The international thrust under Mr. Naik has seen spectacular breakthroughs into Gulf, US and South-East Asia. Earlier in his tenure as Vice President, Mr. Naik kick-started the process of indigenising the manufacture of critical equipment for the process industries. This enabled L&T achieve major successes in the indigenisation of critical technology in the defence and nuclear sectors. L&T is now closely associated with the nations defence establishment in the development of weapon and missile systems.

Mr. Naik has always put the nation before self and company, and in the process he has helped create an organisation where nationalism and patriotism are embedded in the very consciousness of the employees. At a function on December 21, 2007, to commemorate L&Ts 70 year record, a senior Union Minister coined a unique phrase, describing L&T as Indias only national sector company. L&T is a private sector partner to India in key national endeavors. It made a critical contribution to Indias first nuclear-powered submarine, Indias first moon mission, and the successful PSLV programme. L&T has also provided indigenous engineering expertise for critical defence projects. Other national missions for which L&T either supplied vital equipment or offered critical construction services include the 'White Revolution' and the nuclear power programme. The familiar L&T logo has come to represent a benchmark of excellence on its wide range of products. To lead L&T on a path of sustained, profitable growth, Mr. Naik set in motion the process of organisational re-modeling. The Company was restructured into Independent Companies that facilitated aggressive growth across a large revenue base. Mr. Naik has been principally responsible for the extensive use of IT as a major enabler across L&Ts businesses. Since an efficient management of human resources within the Company is of paramount importance, Mr. Naik recognises the need to respect and reward intellectual capital within L&T. He believes that the worth of this intangible asset is invaluable. The organisation, under his leadership, took major initiatives to attract, retain and groom talent.

A concern for social and welfare issues complement Mr. Naik's keen business interests. Having grown up as the son of a school teacher, modest in means but rich in values and cultural heritage, Mr. Naik is deeply committed to social uplift. He has provided both monetary assistance and management expertise in setting up educational institutions and a hospital in Gujarat. He is now the Chairman & President of Kharel Education Society which runs a high school with the latest education facilities. Mr. Naik has always maintained that there is another India beyond the major cities. This is an India which needs intervention to create proper healthcare facilities and build educational institutions that can reach out to the underprivileged. He remains deeply committed to these concerns, and under his leadership L&T has embraced the platforms of health and education as a part of its commitment towards creating a more equitable community in and around the companys facilities. Under Mr. Naik, L&T has brought healthcare to the underprivileged. Medical and para-medical professionals use state-of-the-art equipment at L&Ts welfare centres and factories to prevent, diagnose and cure disease. Services include skin treatment, TB consultation, leprosy diagnosis and treatment, ultrasound facilities, ante-natal care, dental treatment, eye care and cataract referrals for the aged, yoga for women, psychiatry and counselling. Immunisation drives play a crucial role in preventing disease. Mobile health clinics extend the reach of L&Ts health services.

A priority is mother-and-child care. Extending the reach of these services, a number of health care centres were opened in Mumbai. Countrywide, a large number of health camps target specific diseases and specific groups. Health services are provided to children through regular health camps. HIV/AIDS awareness, care & support continue to be a thrust area. L&T regularly organises HIV/AIDS awareness and counselling camps for mobile populations like migrant workers at construction sites. L&T contributes to improving healthcare, education, safety and to the welfare & development of the L&T family and community in which it operates. Mr. Naik was instrumental in setting up the Larsen & Toubro Public Charitable Trust. Its skill training centres have changed the face and future of sections of society, giving opportunities to school dropouts and unemployed youths. After training, they are professionals who have a future to look forward to. L&Ts skill training centres are engines of social change. Even more importantly, skill training is somewhat of a life transforming experience giving youth selfbelief and helping them win back the confidence of the very society that had considered them misfits. The Larsen & Toubro Public Charitable Trust conducts skill training at several locations around the country. In addition, L&T runs Construction Skills Training Institutes for the underprivileged. L&T also contributes to education in many different ways. It builds schools, donates computers, sets up libraries & laboratories, distributes books, organises enrichment classes, donates gym equipment, and offers vocational guidance and awards scholarships. Mr. Naik is also associated with several educational and charitable trusts to uplift the rural populace of India. He is a member of Board of Trustees of the Indian Business Trust for HIV/AIDS.

In addition to being the Chairman & MD and Director of the L&T Group of Companies in India and abroad, Mr. Naik is also the Honorary Consul General for Denmark. Mr. Naik's drive and dynamism is further visible in the myriad activities that he is involved in:

Nominated as the Co-leader of the India-Malaysia CEOs Forum, by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. He is a senior and active member of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National Council. He has contributed several innovative ideas to promote Capital Goods Industry

in India and abroad.

Mr. Naik led the Indian industry's delegation to the 17th Congress of World Energy Council held at Houston in 1998. He is Member of the Board of Trade, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineers (INAE), and Member of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Mr. Naik also participated in the 6th India-EU Business Summit held in New Delhi in September 2005. The theme of the summit was: Building Strategic Business Partnerships.

Mr. Naik was appointed as Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog by the Queen of Denmark, Her Majesty Queen Margarethe. The Knight Cross was formally presented to Mr. Naik by the Ambassador of Denmark, Mr. Ole Lansmann Poulsen, in Mumbai on February 25, 2008.
