Sahib-e-imroz
i.

Wahi hai saahib-e-imroz (today's master) jis ne apni mehnat se Zamaane ke samundar se nikaala gohar-e-fardaN (tomorrows pearl)

Reh guzar
i.

Tu abhi reh guzar mein hai qaid-e-makaam se guzar Misar(Egypt)-o-hijaaz se guzar, paares(Paris)-o-shaam se guzar [It means that don't confine yourself to any one particular place, you are in a proccess/transit of learning and therefore visit different places without desire reward.]

ii.

Jis ka amal hai be-gard, us ki jaza kuch aur hai Hur-o-khayam se guzar, baadh-o-jaam (wine) se guzar [One who does deeds without the desire of janat (hur & wine), he will get higher rewards. Although he will also get both the things, but do things without keeping these points in mind.]

iii.

Tera imaam be-huzoor, teri namaaz be-suroor Aisi namaz se guzar, aise imam se guzar

Khird
i.

Khird (dimaag) ke paas khabar ke siwa kuch aur nahi Tera ilaaj nazar ke siwa kuch aur nahi [This is referred to Allah that our brains have nothing but information about you. But if we could see you then all the problems of believing would be solved.]

ii.

Har makam se aage makaam hai tera Hayaat zoq-e-safar ke siwa kuch aur nahi [Always keep travelling in search of new goals because life is nothing but a pleasurous journey.]

iii.

GiraN baha (costly price) hai to hifz-e-khudi (preservation of self) se hai warna Gohar mein aab-e-gohar ke siwa kuch aur nahi [A pearl is just a drop of water which has preserved itself in a shell.

It is because of this preservation ability that it is so costly or else it is just a drop of water. It implies that one should guard his khudi to become valuable in the sight of others.] Kaza
i.

Teri dua se kaza to badal nahi sakti Magar hai is se yeh mumkin ke tu badal jaye. [Although you can not change your destiny, you can change yourself.]

ii.

Teri dua hai ke ho teri aarzoo poori Meri dua hai teri aarzoo badal jaaye.

Musalmaan
i.

Hum mashriq ke musalmaano ka dil maghrib mein jaa atka hai Waha kuntar (glass) sab billori (crystal) hai, yaha ek puraana matka hai Is daur mein sab mit jaayenge, haN baaqi woh reh jaayega Jo qaayam apni raah pe hai, aur pakka apni hut (maqsad) ka hai Ay! Sheikh-o-brahman sunte ho kya ahl-e-baseerat (witnessers) kehte hai GardoN (storms) ne kitni bulandi se un qaumo ko de patka hai. [People have witnessed the doom of great empires, kingdoms and kings. So those countries who are off track are bound to face annihilation.]

ii.

iii.

Directed to Allah
i.

Ghaisoo-e-taabdaar (lustrous hair) ko aur bhi taabdaar (lustrous) kar Hosh-o-khird shikar kar qalb-o-nazar shikar kar. [Its implied meaning is that Allah make your signs more & more powerful. Make my mind & heart your captive such that they are used only for your purpose.]

ii.

Ishq bhi ho hijaab mein husn bhi ho hijaab mein Ya tu khud aashkaar (visible) ho ya mujh ko aashkar kar [My origination is also unseen (unknown) and you are also unseen. Either you make yourself visible or make my purpose of origination clear.]

iii.

Baag-e-bahisht se mujhe hukm-e-safar diya tha kyon Kaar-e-jahaaN daraz hai ab mera intezaar kar [Why did you ask me to leave the garden of paradise. Now, I am so busy with the activities of this world, that I am not willing to come back to you.]

iv.

Roz-e-hisaab jab mera pesh ho daftar-e-amal Aap bhi sharmsaar ho, mujh ko bhi sharmsaar kar [When my book of deeds is bought in the open on the day of judgement, it will bring shame to both you and me.]

Bahaara
i.

Mumkin hai ke tu jisko samajhta hai bahaara AuroN ki nigaaho mein ho mausam woh khizaaN ka Shayad ke zamiN hai woh kisi aur jahaN ki Tu jisko samajhta hai falak apne jahaN ka

ii.

Mohabbat ka junoon
i.

Mohabbat ka junoon baki nahi hai Musalmaano mein khoon baki nahi hai SafeN kaj, dil pareshan, sajda bezook Ke jazba-e-androoN baki nahi hai RagoN mein lahu baki nahi hai Woh dil, woh aawaaz baki nahi hai Namaaz-o-roza-o-qurbaani-o-haj Yeh sab baki hai tu baki nahi hai

ii.

iii.

iv.

Ishq ke imtihaan
i.

Sitaro se aage jahaan aur bhi hai Abhi ishk ke imtihaan aur bhi hai Tahi (only yours) zindagi se nahi yeh fizaae Yaha saikdooN kaarvaaN aur bhi hai

ii.

iii.

Kina'at (contentment) na kar aalam-e-rang-o-bu par Chaman aur bhi, aashiyaan aur bhi hai Agar kho gaya ek nasheman to kya gham Makaamat-e-aah-o-fagaaN (weeping and crying) aur bhi hai Tu shaheen hai parwaaz hai kaam tera Tere saamne aasmaaN aur bhi hai Isi roz-o-shab mein ulhaj kar na reh jaa Ke tere zamaano-o-makaaN (destinations) aur bhi hai Gaye din ki tanha tha mein anjuman mein Yaha ab mere razdaan (confidantes) aur bhi hai

iv.

v.

vi.

vii.

Nukta-e-sulaiman
i.

Hai yaad mujhe nukta-e-sulaiman-e-khush ahang Dunya nahi mardaan-e-jafakash ke liye tang [I still remember the words of Suleman, the (man) with good voice that "the world is not small for a hardworking person", he can get work anywhere.]

ii.

Cheetah ka jigar chahiye shaheen ka tajassus Jee sakta hai be-roshni daanish-o-farhang [You need the housla (courage) of a cheetah and good research like the falcon. (The falcon sees its prey on land far-away from the sky, because of its research/finding/study of the land). And if u have these two qualities then you can survive (live) without the light of intelligence and understanding.]

iii.

Kar bulbul-o-taoos ki takhleed se tauba Bulbul fakat awaaz hai, taoos fakat rang [Do not imitate the bulbul or the peacock. As bulbul has nothing but good voice, and peacock has nothing but good color. Yyour inner self is more important.]

Kaafir aur Musalmaan

i.

Pooch us se ke maqbool hai fitrat ki gavaahi Tu saahib-e-manzil hai ke bhatka huwa rahi

ii.

Kaafir hai musalmaaN to na shahi na fakiri Momin hai to karta hai fakiri mein bhi shahi Kaafir hai to shamseer (sword) pe karta hai bharosa Momin hai to be-tegh (sword) bhi ladta hai sipaahi Kaafir hai to taab-e-taqdeer musalmaaN Momin hai to woh aap hai taqdeer-e-ilaahi

iii.

iv.

Dil
i.

Dil zinda-o-bedaar (alert) agar ho to ba-tadreej (gradually) Bande ko ata karta hai chashme-nigraaN (way to look) aur [If your heart is alive and alert then gradually Allah gives his banda different ways (perspective) to look at things.]

ii.

Alfaz-o-maani mein tafawat (difference) nahi lekin Mullah (religious person) ki azaaN aur, mujaahid (holy warrior) ki azaaN aur [The mullah and the mujaahid both utter the same words Allah-O-Akbar, but there is a difference in the forcefulness of each.]

iii.

Parwaaz hai dono ki isi ek fizaaN mein Karghaz (vulture) ka jahaN aur hai, shaheen (falcon) ka jahaaN aur [The vulture and the falcon fly in the same sky, but both have different ways of living. A vulture eats carrion while a falcon preys. So which is more majestic and awesome.]

Maikhaane
i.

Bahut dekhe hai maine mashriq-o-maghrib ke maikhaane Yaha saqi nahi paida, wahaN be-zook (tasteless) hai sehba (wine) [I have visited numerous wine-houses in the east as well as west. Here I find no saqi and there the wine has no taste.]

ii.

Na iraN mein rahe baaki, na turaaN mein rahe baaki Woh bande fikr tha jin ka hilaak qaisar-o-kasra [Neither in Iran nor in Turkey there remains the like of those who could conquer the two thrones (qaisar-o-kasra)]

On Muslims
i.

Sar shak(tears)-e-chashm(eyes)-e-muslim mein hai nesaaN ka asar paida Khalilullah (Moses) ke darya mein hoNga phir gohar (pearl) paida [Iqbal says, I see the tears in the eyes of muslims which shows that they are begining to realise themselves. The magnitude of tears are compared to nesaaN (month of rain).]

ii.

Agar usmaaniyoo (Turks) par koh-e-gham toota to kya gham hai Ke khoon-e-sad hazaar anjum (stars) se hoti hai sehr paida [Usmaaniyoo are the turks who were very strong at one time. In Urdu it is referred to as the Daur-e-Usmaaniyaa, in English, the Great Ottoman Empire. Iqbal says, so what if they were defeated. The day breaks only after the death of a hundred-thousand stars (ie. after the passing away of the night).]

iii.

Hazaaro saal nargis (a flower) apni benoori (blindness) pe roti hai Badi mushkil se hota hai chaman mein deeda-e-war (intellectual) paida [Nargis is a name of a white flower, which has the shape of an eye. So, although it has the shape of an eye, it does not have vision, therefore it is called benoori. But the sheyr, just means that it really takes a long long time, only after which one deeda-war (intellectual, gehri nazar rakhne-wala, daana) is born.]

iv.

Noha (sorrow) paida ho, ae! bulbul, ke ho tere tarannum (melody) se Kabootar ke tan-e-nazuk (weak body) mein shaheeN ka jigar paida [Here Iqbal is refering to himself, as a bulbul, and is saying that Iqbal brings so much sorrow in his shairs, that even a weak pigeon gets the daring of a falcon. (It refers to weak muslims)]

Majnu ne shahr choda hai

i.

Majnu ne shahr chhoda hai sahra bhi chhod de Nazaare ki hawas ho to Laila bhi chhod de Majnu has renounced the world, let him renounce the wilds too If he seeks the vision sublime (God), let him forsake Laila too Waaiz kamaal-e-tarq se milti hai yaaN muraad Duniya jo chhod di hai to uqba bhi chhod de

ii.

Complete self surrender, priest, is the price of the goal Abandon too the world to come (Uqba), not this world alone
iii.

Taqlid ki rawish se to behtar hai khud kashi Rasta bhi dhoondh, Khizr ka sauda bhi chhod de Suicide is better than servile imitation, Go, find your own path, look not for a Khizr [Khizr is a person referred to in the Quran, who was highly knowledgeable (even more knowledgeable than the prophets who lived during his times), and who also lived an extraordinarily long life.] Shabnam ki tarah phoolon pe ro aur chaman se chal Is bagh mein qayaam ka sauda bhi chhod de Weep like dew over the flowers then quit the grove Give up the idle dream of a permanent stay Saudaagri nahin, yeh ibaadat Khuda ki hai Ai be-khabar jaza ki tamanna bhi chhod de It's not dealing, but it is worship divine Eschew, ye ignorant, even the hope of reward Achha hai dil ke saath rahe pasbaan-e-aql Lekin kabhi kabhi ise tanha bhi chhod de Good, if reasoning of the mind controls the heart But let it (heart) have it's own way, once in a while Jeena woh kya hai jo ho nafas-e-ghair par madaar Shohrat ki zindagi ka bharosa bhi chhod de 'Tis no life that sustains/depends itself on others Give up dependence on life of earthly fame Waiz sabut laae koi mai ke jawaaz mein Iqbal ko yeh zid hai ke peena bhi chhod de Should the priest produce evidence against the wine Iqbal too will pledge to give up drinking

Nukta-e-tawheed
i.

BayaaN mein nukta-e-tawheed aa to sakta hai Tere dimaag mein but khaana ho to kya kahiye [You can speak of tawheed (belief in the unity of God), but what to say about the shirk (setting up partners in worship with God) that you have at the back of ur mind.]

ii.

Makam-e-fakr (darwaish) hai kitna buland shaheen (royalness) se Ravish (attitude) kisi ki gadaayana (katoora) ho to kya kahiye [The position of a fakir, darwaish is higher than that of a king. But, what to say about a fakir who has taken up the attitude of asking for money.]

Parinde ki faryaad
i.

Aata hai yaad mujhko guzraa huwa zamaana Woh baag ki bahaare woh sab ka chechahana Azaadiyaa kaha woh ab apne ghosle ki Apni khushi se aana, apni khusi se jaana Lagti hao chot dil par, aata hai yaad jis dam Shabnam ke aasuoo par kaliyoo ka muskuraana Woh pyaari pyaari surat, woh kaamini si murat Aabad jis ke dam se tha mera aashiyaana Aati nahi sadaayee us ki mere kafas (cage) mein Hoti meri rihaahi ay kaash mere bas mein Kya bad-naseeb hoo mein ghar ko taras raha hoon Saathi to hai watan mein, mein kaid mein pada hoon Aayi bahaar, kaliya phoolo ki has rahi hai Mein is andhere ghar mein kismat ko ro raha hoon Is kaid ka ilaahi, dukhda kise sunaoo Dar hai yahee kafas mein, mein gham se mar na jaooo Jab se chaman choota hai yeh haal ho gaya hai Dil gham ko kha raha hai, gham dil ko kha raha hai Gaana ise samajh kar khush ho na sunnewale Dukhe huwee diloo ki faryaad, yeh sada hai Azaad mujh ko kar de oh qaid karne wale Mein bezoobaa hoon qaidi, mujhe chod kar dua le

Azaad bande
i.

Tere azaad bandon ki na yeh duniya na woh duniya Yaha marne ki paabandi vahaan jeene ki paabandi

KharadmandoN
i.

KharadmandoN (intellectuals) se kya poocho ke mera ibtada (beginning) kya hai Ke mein is fiqr mein rehtaa hooN mera intehaa (end) kya hai Khudi ko kar buland itna ke har taqdeer se pehle Khuda bande se khud pooche, bataa teri razaa kya hai

ii.

Na tu zameeN ke liye
i.

Na tu zameeN ke liye hai na aasmaaN ke liye Jahaan hai tere liye tu nahi jahaaN ke liye Nishaane raah dikhaate the jo sitaaroN ko Taras gaye hai kisi mard-e-raahdaaN ke liye
