LOCAL NEWS and EVENTS Thursday 17th May UBRCN General Meeting to be held at the Toogoolawah Showgrounds hall from 9am. There will be general discussions and updates from all Groups within the region and a special presentation of Updates from SEQ Catchments CEO, Simon Warner and staff. This event is a chance for community groups and SEQ Catchments to celebrate our collective achievements in natural resource management throughout the region over the last 12 months, as well as an opportunity to raise issues, concerns and priorities for the future. FLOOD RECOVER WORKS UNDERWAY


SEQ Catchments worked with both State and Federal Governments to secure assistance to help farmers to rectify flood damage. The State Government provided the money needed to take river restoration specialists to the sites and work with SEQ Catchments to develop restoration plans. and the Federal

Erosion damage to banks of Brisbane River at Fulham Government, through its Caring for Our Country program, provided funding to undertake the restoration works. Toogoolawah farmer, Bill Gulbransen Restoration project underway experienced significant damage to his property , which fronts the upper Brisbane River, during the January 2011 floods. This erosion and slumping of the rivers banks resulted in significant loss of productive land, fencing and irrigation equipment. Major earthworks were undertaken to batter the banks and Toogoolawah Pasture Management Field Day As part of SEQ Catchments ongoing sustainable grazing program a Pasture Management Field Day was held at Toogoolawah Showgrounds on Friday 4th May. It was supported by funding through the Australian Governments Caring for our Country Achieving groundcover targets in SEQ project and was attended by over 25 local landholders. The day focused on managing and monitoring native and sown pastures to maintain good land condition. The Presenter, Damien OSullivan from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation led the discussions on many topics which covered basics of grazing management, the principles to balance pasture growth and how to use indicator species to assess and monitor pasture condition, plus many other crucial factors necessary for maximising sustainability and profitability of a grazing business.

Saturday 19th May Pasture and Weed Workshop Peachester Assessing the health of your grazing land This workshop will provide landholders an introduction to: Grazing Land Management Pasture Identification Land Condition Assessment Weed Identification and management Feral animal management This workshop is being presented by the Pumicestone FarmFLOW Project Peter Bell from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council will be talking on weeds & pests and Bruce Lord from SEQ Catchments will be presenting the grazing & pasture session. 15 Jun Friday AgForce Property Computer Mapping Workshop at Toogoolawah, 8.45am to 4pm Learn about property computer mapping and how it can help you Workshop topics include: Developing a property map that identifies farm infrastructure, productive areas and future developments New mapping capabilities and foundational computer mapping principles How to use this technology to improve property management, productivity, infrastructure planning/building, succession planning and to assist with regulative requirements Adding bio and physical features to maps such as land types and infrastructure and linking GPS for data upload and download Workshop participants will receive their property's latest digital data and a mapping software demonstration program free through funding from the Queensland Government. The course also goes towards a unit of a Certificate IV in Conservation and Land Management. Registrations are required 10 days prior to event in order to ensure enough resources are available for all participants including information packs and digital data. Participant numbers are limited. Landcare groups play a big role in safeguarding our natural resources and bring together people from all walks of life all with the same goal a more sustainable Queensland. Now in its 23rd year running, share and visit first-hand projects in South East Queensland, with field trips facilitated by not-for-profit group SEQ Catchments. Key note speakers include Professor Tim Flannery, from Macquarie University, who will provide a global perspective to landcare in Australia and Les Robinson, Director of Enabling Change, who is a specialist in the fields of behavior change social marketing, community development and social change. Registration now open, take advantage of the early-bird rate until 15th May 2012 Recycling Grants available through Keep Australia Beautiful The Keep Australia Beautiful grants, funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation, are open to all communities across Australia and range from $3,000 to $10,000 for projects that will result in a measurable increase in beverage container recycling. The applications are open to community groups, local associations, schools, small to medium enterprises and local government authorities Applications for the 2012 grants funding close on Friday 15th June 2012 with successful applicants confirmed at the end of July.
