Showcase for Filipino design and craftsmanship By Lolita Villa Source: Entrepreneur Magazine July 2013 Issue

Summary: The DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) created a project to give opportunities for Filipino Entrepreneurs. The Project is named One -Town-OneProduct-Tindahang Pinoy. Its main purpose is to help our entrepreneurs in their businesses by setting up a trade fair where they can put their booths and sell their products. Normally, attending bazaars and trade fairs, hauling goods and peripherals, renting and designing booths, and hiring sales people, take away time and capital from producing goods. Thanks to Tindahang Pinoy, local entrepreneurs have a permanent and presentable location seven days a week, zero store operation expenses, subsidized participation in events, and have their business matched to event organizers, trade missions and other buyers. The trep shells out a one -time membership fee of P3,000, a monthly P800 rental fee per square meter for food products or a monthly rental of P1200 per 1.5 square meter for non-food products. The OTOP Tindahang Pinoy is a public-private partnership of the DTI with presence in the three areas in the country: in Clark, Pampanga, in Davao and in Cebu.

Reaction: I am glad to hear that DTI has set up OTOP-Tindahang Pinoy to help our Filipino entrepreneurs boost their business capabilities and opportunities. This project could help in maintaining our economy and sustain a resourceful livelihood for small Filipino manufacturers. This seems to be a good start in preparing our Filipino manufacturers in competing with the products all over the world. Good job DTI!

Playboy biz mate By M.C. Carlos Source: Entrepreneur Magazine July 2013 Issue

Summary: The liquor firm VuQo has always taken the road-less travelled ever since it set up eight years ago. It is the only Vodka in the world that is made from coconut nectar. VuQo caught the attention of Playboy Enterprises Inc. when some Philippine companies dared to take the brand to Hollywood to create a global buzz. In January, VuQo sealed a licensing deal with Playboy to develop and produce Playboy Vodka, a premium brand of Vodka made from sugarcane that would be launched in the Asia-Pacific in July. Rich Cabael, VuQo founder and CEO said that the deal is complementary because of the strength of the Playboy brand which has been around for almost 60 years and VuQos track record in the spirits industry. On the other hand, Playboy says the partnership with VuQo is a good fit. Playboy also said that with VuQos superior product knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit, combined with the power of Playboy brand, will result in an effective partnership. Rich Cabaels advice to Philippine companies who want to take the same route as VuQo? Do it if they have the stomach to deal with big companies and the capability to deliver quality products.

Reaction: This article has brought a certain thought in my mind that Filipino manufacturers has always been good in producing quality products that will suite the taste of worldwide consumers. If it wasnt for the resourcefulness of the VuQo company, it wouldnt have caught the attention of Playboy Enterprises Inc. This seems to be a good start in the booming performance of the Filipino manufacturers in the global market.
