STAAD Graphical Environment

Model Generation
2.2.7 Geometry | Composite Deck Page

Purpose A new interface has been created to define a composite floor deck system. Using this new interface, users can quickly generate a composite flooring system. This new interface addresses the limitations which existed in the old method of composite deck definition. Old system (STAAD.Pro 2004 and older) Previously, the definition of the composite deck was disjointed. For example, the concrete grade, density, width, etc. had to be entered through one property box and the rib width, rib height, thickness of slab above the form steel deck, etc. had to be specified in the Design New system (STAAD.Pro 2004 SE) The new system provides an integrated environment in which the full definition of the decking system can be done in one place.

When we select the Geometry | Composite Deck Page , t he Composite Deck dialog box will appear on the right hand side as shown below.

Figure 2.12 The various options in the dialog box are explained below: Create New Deck Enables the user to define the deck in any of the two methods stated below. Clicking on Nodes The Clicking on Nodes option enables the user to define the deck by clicking on the nodal points that comprise the deck boundary. Click on the Create New Deck button to begin selecting the deck boundary using the composite boundary cursor Once the deck is created, it will be shown with a hatch pattern. .

Figure 2.13 Use Selected Beams This option enables the user to define the deck by selecting the beams that comprise the deck boundary. Using the Beams cursor boundary of the deck. , select the beams which will define the outer

Once the deck is identified by any one of the aforementioned methods, a dialog box as shown below will prompt for the deck name. Enter an appropriate deck name in the edit box provided.

Figure 2.14 The deck will then be defined and the deck name will appear in the Composite Deck box as shown below.

Select the deck in the tree control to define the properties of the deck. The various options in the Composite Deck box are explained as follows. Create Direction The user can define the deck direction or direction of the longitudinal flutes or ribs in the deck by highlighting any two beams and clicking the Create Direction button. The deck direction will be defined to run perpendicular to the two beams that were selected. A symbol shown below will appear to indicate the direction of the deck. This symbol will be placed at the centroid of the deck area.

Figure 2.16 Concrete Properties The user can input the concrete thickness above the flutes, the unit weight of concrete and the grade of concrete in the respective edit boxes. Update Deck Property Synchronizes the graphical window and updates any changes made to the deck definition. Rib Properties Rib properties can now be defined either using the database or by entering the properties manually. Use Database Use Database provides the user a dropdown list of the various standards incorporated in STAAD.Pro. Users can currently choose from any of the three available standards which include ASC, VULCRAFT and VERCO. The rib properties will be pulled from the database provided. Apart from using the available standards, users have a choice to define their own rib properties by providing the width and height of the rib. Rib Width The user can define the width of the rib in this box. Rib Height The user can define the height of the rib in this box. Stud Diameter The user may enter a diameter for the Stud by choosing the Custom option or can choose from the three available diameters: 3/4, 5/8, 1/2. Stud Length The user can specify the length of the stud in this box. Shored Choose the appropriate radio button depending on whether or not shoring is to be used during construction. Once the direction of the deck is specified through the Create Direction option, the beam numbers which comprise the deck will be displayed as shown in the dialog box in the next figure. Clicking on any of these beams will highlight the beam in the model and the section property for the beam will be displayed as the Current Property . The property of the beam can be changed, if required, by clicking on the Add/Change Property button which in turn, brings up the steel tables from where an appropriate section can be chosen.

The effective width for each beam is automatically calculated by STAAD.Pro and is displayed in the Effective Width box. The user can modify the effective width for any individual beam by inputting the value in the Effective Width box and clicking on the update button.

Figure 2.17 To specify loading on the composite deck, go to the General | Load page. Define a new load case or select an existing load case. Click on Add to apply the load. In the resulting Add New Load Items box (as shown in the following figure), select Floor Load .

Figure 2.18 Choose the Group option and the deck name will appear in the Member Group box. You do not have to create a group. When a composite deck is formed, a new deck group is automatically created. The name of the group is identical to the name provided to the deck. Select the deck name. Define the value for the pressure in the Pressure edit box. Choose the direction of application of the pressure load. Check the box for One Way Distribution (if necessary) and click on the Add button to add the load. The load will be applied on the deck following the rules of one way distribution as shown below.

An important feature to note is that when the structure is modified, the deck automatically gets modified with it. This is shown in the next figure. Note that when the dimension of the structure is changed along the length from 30 ft to 40 ft, the deck gets modified with the structure and there is no need to redefine the deck all over again. The deck loading is also revised automatically. Original structure Modified structure

Figure 2.20 The design parameters for the composite deck are already defined through the interface. Few additional design parameters like TRACK can be assigned, if so desired, and finally, design commands like CHECK CODE has to be assigned to the composite deck. For all these assignments, the deck can be selected as a whole by clicking on the Select Group Deck button from within the Steel Design Whole Structure dialog box shown below.

Member query dialog box, which comes up on double clicking a member, has been modified to reflect the composite beam properties as shown in the next figure.

Figure 2.23 The dialog box displays various properties for the composite beam including effective width, whether shoring during construction has been considered or not, grade of concrete, unit weight of concrete, thickness of concrete above flutes, rib properties, stud properties etc. These data will enable the user to get a clear picture of the geometric properties for the composite beam. Once the design is completed the Steel Design page in the same query dialog box will be populated with the design information related to the composite beam as shown in the next figure.

Figure 2.24 The design information include:
