THEORY OF THE EXPERIMENT: A forward-biased thyristor is usually turned on by applying a positive gate voltage between gate and cathode. There is, however, a transition time from forward on state. This transition time, called thyristor turn-on time, is defined as the time during which it changes from forward blocking state to final on-state. Total turnon time can be divided into three intervals; 1. Delay Time (td) 2. Rise Time (tr)

3. Spread Time (tp) Thyristor turn-off means that it has changed from on to off state and is capable of blocking the forward voltage. The turn-off time tq of a thyristor is defined as the time between the instant anode current becomes zero and the instant SCR regains forward blocking capability. The turn-off time is divided into two intervals ; 1. Reverse Recovery Time(trr) 2. Gate Recovery Time(tgr) In this experiment, transient characteristics of SCR is find by using class-c commutation technique. This technique is also called as complementary commutation method.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:

PROCEDURE: 1. Connections are made as per the circuit diagram. 2. Adjust 12V DC supply such that two SCRs are in forward bias condition. 3. Also adjust 5V DC supply such that it is capable of trigerring a forward bias SCR. 4. First trigger the main SCR by giving gate votage to it. 5. Note turn-on time of main SCR by using D.S.O. 6. Now trigger the complementary SCR. Due to the triggering of complementary SCR, main SCR which is already in conduction will turn-off. 7. Note turn-off time of main SCR by using D.S.O. 8. Tabulate the turn-on and turn-off time of main SCR.
