System design
DMCplus characteristics: The DMCplus is a digital amplifier system with up to 28 channels (2 channels per amplifier plug-in unit) that is 100% computer-controlled. The system design is characterised by its bus structure similar to that of a microprocessor system. All amplifier plug-in units and function boards in the DMCplus are connected to theCP03 Central processing unit in parallel via a data and control bus. The individual device plug-in units can be connected as desired. Free slots are also possible. DMCplus features: D The system is controlled by a microprocessor. It enables up to 28 quantities to be measured simultaneously on all channels and converts the analogue measurements into digital signals. D Digital filtering enables the frequency response for each channel to be optimally adapted to the measurement task. D Measuring rates of up to 9600 measurements per second and per channel make the DMCplus the right solution for the complete range of mechanical measurement problems. D Its high accuracy and a resolution of max. 20 bits also enable the DMCplus to be used for precision measurements. D The integral measurement memory for up to 40.000 measured values (optionally 500.000 measurements) enhances the realtime-capacities of the connected computer. D The device parameters and the measurements are stored and the data is protected against power failure.

Analogue-to-digital conversion HBM has developed a special ADC method based on a dual-channel 16-bit-converter. Contrary to conventional methods, the HBM converter does not restrict the resolution and converts without loss of information over the whole bandwidth even with highly dynamic processes. A prerequisite for the HBM ADC-method are very short internal signal propagation times which could only be achieved by an IC chip, developed by HBM in gate-array technology. The high-resolution digitisation permits an uncritical selection of the amplifiers input sensitivity and avoids restrictions and overmodulations. The signal transmitted from the transducer is boosted in the amplifier and then digitised in the whole signal range without loss of information. Each amplifier channel has been equipped with such a component. Measurement conditioning If a channel has been zero-balanced and tared before the actual measurement, the zero-balance and tare value will be added to the current measurement, thus producing a conditioned value that is available for output on the interface. To enhance the measurement accuracy, a calibration can be started by an external command thus mathematically compensating all internal deviations. The measurements are accessible to the computer without reprocessing.
B-6
System design
Data transmission rates The amplifiers supply measurements at data rates between 75 and 9600measurements/s. With data transmission rates smaller than 9600measurements/s, measurements are averaged in the gate-array. With even smaller data transmission rates (between 1 and 60measurements/s, the CPU determines an additional average value. Due to this averaging, resolutions of up to 20 bits are obtained. For measurement acquisition, 40 000 measurements (standard) are stored in an intermediate memory and measurements from up to 10 channels are transmitted via the IEEE interface at measuring rates of 9600 measurements per second and stored externally. Therefore, the DMCplus enables a total of almost 100 000 measurements per second to be transmitted.

The digital counter board enables pulses to be counted, period lengths or frequencies to be measured and acquired isochronously with the measurements resulting from the other channels. There are two separate counter channels A and B. If channel A operates in the preset-counter mode, channel B can be used as carry counter. There are no switches on the board; all setups required for transducer adaptation such as operating mode, measuring range, input hysteresis and lowpass filter and counter reset are computer controlled. Operating modes: a) Up/down counter b) Preset counter c) Continuous period measurement d) Frequency measurement a) Up/down counter This operating mode is used to count pulses from different sources, to measure displacements or angles with incremental transmitters or to count piece numbers, machine cycles, etc. The nominal counting range is +/ 4,000,000, however, up to a maximum value of +/ 8,000,000 counting without data loss is possible. An adjustable stepwidth (scale factor) enables the number of counter steps to be reduced or increased, for example, in order to ensure measurement output up to +/ 15,625 for binary 2-byte output during which the least significant 8 bits are not transmitted.

b) Preset counter Pulses are counted consecutively until the preset number (adjustable from 2...4,000,000) has been reached. The preset number cannot be output as measurement due to the fact that the counter is immediately set to zero when the preset number has been reached and counting is restarted. With down-counting, the counter reading is set from zero to the preset number minus 1 at the next counter pulse and counts back to zero. If channel B is used as carry counter, it functions like a standard up/down counter, and, each time channel A is set to zero, the counter is set one step up or down. This mode is suitable, for example, for the measurement of the angle of rotation. Channel A is scaled to 0...360. Channel B measures the number of rotations. c) Continuous period measurement This operating mode is used to measure the time period elapsing between two input pulses. With several pulses in one measurement period (which is determined by the selected measurement rate), the computed average is output as measurement. The selected time-measurement range is represented by 4,000,000 digits. d) Frequency measurement The frequency for the applied input pulses is determined. The selected frequency measuring-range is represented by 4,000,000 digits. This operating mode is only suitable, for example, for speed measurement.

b) Configuration The IN1...IN3 inputs are differential inputs with voltage levels between 15V and +15V. The switching hysteresis can be adjusted (through software via the computer) to suppress interferences and to determine the switching threshold (triggering). This permits safe operation even with signals that are changing very slowly. Furthermore, a 1st-order low-pass filter with a cutoff frequency of 20kHz can be activated to reduce all higher frequencies. The inputs can be connected as differential inputs or also single-ended related to ground.
Signal flow
IN
+250mV 250mV +250mV
Differential input With the hysteresis adjusted to 500mV the signal present at IN+ must exceed the signal at IN by 250mV to be recognized positive (High). Then IN+ must be 250mV lower than IN to generate a Low signal for internal processing.
IN + High Low IN

Function boards
Input signal related to ground TTL signals (0...5V) or CMOS signals (0...15V) can be connected directly to the IN+ inputs or to the IN inputs, if the negative edge is to be counted. The open-ended inputs are connected to 2.5V internally thus making superfluous other connections. The switching hysteresis is symmetrical to this reference level.

2) Current supply for the transducer Internal supply voltages of +15V, 15V and +5V are available for each channel to supply the measurement transducers that are connected. The +15V and 15V voltages are connected via internal protective resistors of 100 ohms each, thus reducing the output resistance according to the load. The limit of performance for the protective resistors is 250mW, therefore, the maximum loading currents permissible are limited to 50mA. Correspondingly, the supply voltage available may drop to about 10V. The +5V supply is protected by a common electro-thermal fuse for both channels A and B. A steady-state current of 300mA is permissible. The fuse reacts at a current of about 600mA. After a non-permissible load having been removed, regular operation is only possible after a reset time of about 20s.
B-60
Function boards
OUT2 (Pin 14): Counter control-output 2 For monitoring purposes, e.g., to adjust the hysteresis (trigger threshold) or for transducer adjustment, the outputs OUT1 and OUT2 permit connection to an oscilloscope. OUT1 and OUT2 are HC-MOS outputs with 0...5V level. Depending on the selected DZ65 setup such as: count one edge of input signal IN1 only, count two edges of input signal IN1, or count all four edges of input signals IN1 and IN2, and the selected hysteresis, output OUT1 is used for the output of every edge recognized valid as a 0.25s-wide pulse. At output OUT2, the level changes from 0V to 5V or from 5V to 0V with every edge recognized valid, i.e. the frequency present at output OUT2 amounts to half the frequency at output OUT1.

Measurement data is stored in standard DOS files; every measurement occupies 4 bytes. The maximum file size is limited by the maximum data depth of 1 million measurements per DMCplus channel. The maximum number of files is subject to the DOS conventions. The files can be read on a computer with appropriate PCMCIA slot. Expanding the currently used computer software:
D D
Before transmitting the measure instruction, open a file. Close the file after measurement and data transmission to the computer (see operating manual Operation with computer or terminal, instructions: FOD and PCC).
After software expansion, the DMCplus maximum data throughput is reduced to about 40,000 measurements per second.

The DMCplus includes two serial interfaces: RS-232-C and RS-422/485 An IEEE488-78 Bus interface can be installed as an option. The instrument can only be operated via one interface at a time. Each interface has special advantages but also some restrictions. This chapter is to ease your decision on which interface to use. For details on the interfaces mode of operation refer to the appropriate chapter.
RS-232-C interface D Relatively low transmission speed. D Requires a 3-core cable for transmission in both directions (duplex or bidirectional) as minimum arrangement. D Only one device can be connected. RS-422/485 interface D Transmission speed corresponds to RS-232-C. D Requires a 4-wire bus. D A number of devices can be connected to one serial interface in your computer.

A START bit is set before each character (data byte). Then follow the data bits and a STOP bit. Due to the fact that data is transmitted successively, the transmitting speed must correspond to the receiving speed. The number of bits per second is called baud rate. The exact receiver baud-rate is synchronised with the START bit with each byte transmitted. Then follow the data bits that are all of the same length. When the STOP bit is reached, the receiver changes to wait state until reactivated by the next START bit.

Data transmission is computer-controlled with the X-ON (DC1) and X-OFF (DC3) software handshake or with the RTS and CTS hardware handshake. If the computer is ready to receive data, it issues the X-ON (DC1) control character. If it cannot receive any data, e.g. if there is no free memory space, the X-OFF (DC3) control character is issued. With the hardware handshake, the CTS line is used for this function. The two plugs are electrically equivalent; the drawback of the 25-pin plug is that it can easily be mistaken for the RS-232-C plug. For this reason, HBM has used the 24-pin Amphenol plug on the IE01 function card. This bus enables max. 15 devices to be interconnected in parallel to form a system. Data is transmitted in parallel and asynchronous handshaking.
Interfaces
D-11
The bus comprises 16 lines; three groups are distinguished: 8 data lines 3 handshake lines 5 control lines The devices are electrically interconnected via the bus. Instructions and data are transmitted from device to device via the bus. There are two groups of instructions: Device instructions: Are transmitted to one or several devices by the controller for evaluation and processing. Interface instructions: Control the interface system. When interconnecting several devices to form a system, we recommend to use the chain-type connection and not the star-type connection. Open circuits also must be avoided (reflexions).

3.3 Addressing
Every device operating in an interconnected system (max. 15) must have its own address to enable the controller to correctly distinguish the individual devices. In general, the address is set using a switch on the device and numbered in sequence from 0 to 30. Each device can be addressed with its individual address. For HBM devices, the factory-set address is 4.

The status bits transmitted during a serial poll have the following meaning:
Bit:
7 RQS ESB MAV 3 2 1 0
Status-byte register
16 32 64 Data available Error-sum bit SRQ code Request service Event-status bit Message available
The computer must respond to the Data available message with an INPUT or ENTER and accept data. Only when all data included in an instruction has been output, can the DMCplus interpret the next instruction. Errors are set in the Standard event status register and can be queried with the *ESR? instruction. For detailed information on the error, enter the EST? instruction (see manual Operation with computer or terminal). Furthermore, the errors are summed in the Status byte register to obtain an Error sum bit (ESB). When the Standard event status register is read, the individual error bits and the sum bit are cleared.

Addressing instructions
Sets all devices to the precisely defined switch-on condition. Starts a serial poll; the device addressed as talker transmits a status byte. Deactivates the serial-poll state. They act only on the devices currently addressed by the controller. Starts the trigger function in all addressed devices. Resets the addressed device to the manual-operation condition. Deactivates remote control. Resets one or several devices to the defined initial state.
TAG - Talker address group LAG - Listener address group Unaddressing instructions UNL - Unlisten UNT - Untalk
Disables all devices addressed as listener. Disables the last talker on the bus.
