Date : 19 September 2013 (Thursday) Time : 5.30pm 7.30pm (Refreshment will be served at 5.00pm) Venue : Tan Sri Prof. Chin Fung Kee Auditorium, Wisma IEM Speaker : S. Vignaeswaran MIEA, CPEng (Queensland, Australia) SYNOPSIS
This paper attempts to explore the reasons behind much of the practical as well as the academic worlds woes in project management issues. The literature and corporate endeavors are filled with bad after-taste of past project activities and promises of better future undertakings. However, this does not seem to be the case, while the changing global trends, dictates that this must be so. Hence, to resolve this, the general reasons for project management failure is dissected into its fundamental components and analyzed. This will give an insight into why the problems persist and will continue to plague future projects undertaken. In trying to understand the micro-causes of project management failure, there seems to be an urgency to address its actual causes from its subsequent symptoms, which need to be clearly defined and segregated. This advocates the application of making informed decisions towards choices as the former is intertwined with the latter proportionately. In addition, the suitability of applying Control & Instrumentation concepts to Project Management is highlighted. In doing so, the various traditional project management tools are examined in detail and their modes of failure highlighted. This puts project management failures in a very much holistic setting via an out-of-the-box approach.
