RURAL
PROJECT A hospital to be designed in a remote
rural area, on the outskirts of Mumbai, a small village near Panvel.
HOSPITAL
CONCEPT Aim of the design was that the structure should relate to
to the surrounding environment. Rural elements were used in the design, like sloping roofs, courtyards. A hint of minimalism is added to the design to give a touch of modernism, so that it does not look obsolete though in the rural environment.
COURTYARD STRUCTURE
facilities for the ailing people in the area and far across, with other special treatments too.
range from poor people to the visiting affluent doctors who will treat the patients with their respective specialities.
Courtyards are the main element in the design. They are the lungs of the structure, providing continuous MINIMALISM The facade of the structure is minimalistic, with straight
walls short and wide windows, glass facade at certain area. light and ventilation, even during the power-cut. The structure surrounds these 4 courtyards.
SLOPING ROOF Sloping roofs are an important element as, the climate
in this region is rough with heavy rainfall.
TREE

PROJECT
- The project was an initiative to give the people of Shivaji Nagar, a better living. A space which does not look like slums, but a cluster of houses. - It was made Affordable with the materials and construction techniques learnt during case studies with the URBZ Team (non-profitable firm which initiates on Affordable housing). - Brief for this project was to provide living spaces, some commercial spaces, a community space with a temple and services layouts
HOUSING
CONCEPT
- SHIVAJI NAGAR
- Inspired from Charles Correa s work on Artist Village in Belapur. - He resuscitates the courtyard style of buildings, which inherently have communal spaces built within their layout. - His cluster modules, which although very simple, relate to each other in a complex way.
CHALLENGE
- It was a challenge to provide houses atleast for 275-280 families, in an acre. - To give atleast minimum space with necessary facilities like kitchen and bathroom, with proper ventilation, was a task. ARTIST VILLAGE IN BELAPUR, DESIGNED BY CHARLES CORREA
DESIGN
- Aim of the design was to create a spacious environment in a congested area. - Creating cross-ventilation for every house was a difficult task, but was achieved. - Shared courtyard was incorporated in the design, giving the tenants a pleasure to sit outside and even use the space for household works. - Services are been taken care in this design, with proper water supply and good drainage system. - A Community space with a temple at the centre of the site is provided. Space can be used by the people for some occasions and functions or meetings or a playing area for children. - Shops (commercial spaces) were facing the main street rather than the internal street, which was the case earlier.
CLUSTER
COMBINATION OF 3 CLUSTERS, CREATING COURTYARDS AND CENTRAL OPENSPACE. SYMMETRICAL, KEEPING SIMPLE FOR PATHWAYS.
WORKSHOP REDESIGN
- The project was to built a building for a post graduation department with all the necessary facilities. - It was supposed to be built on the current workshop footprint. - The idea was to design as per the time-line. The surrounding buildings speak about their time. - As a result a modern design was thought of, for the building.

THESIS
Music is a global human phenomenon and also an intimate personal experience that affects our lives everyday. The interaction of people, instruments and imagination makes music. The interaction of music and society causes shifts in musical styles, innovation in musical instruments and the uses of instruments in making music.
The centre will provide amenities such as exhibition space, jam rooms for practice purpose, interactive studios where an individual has access to an array of instruments and a merchandise store for purchasing music related goods. Overall, the centre will increase awareness and encourage this genre of music. It will provide upcoming musicians a platform and an incentive to express themselves through rock music which is the centre's objective. The history of rock and the expertise that goes into creating soulful music will also be taught at the Rock Music Centre.
Showcase and celebrate the rock music product industry. To serve as educational source preserving the rich history and evolution of rock music. Opportunities for cultural enrichment. Pressuring musical heritage through special exhibition. Organised chronologically featuring historic milestones, popular music and instruments of those eras. Special exhibitions with music presentation and workshops highlighting renowned international and national musicians. Jam rooms and recording studios provides onsite services for busy professional musicians, a convenient place to accomplish all your musical needs while you rehearse and recording provides everything you might need before, during and after rehearsals such as guitars and base strings, cables, drum sticks, heads etc. Dedicated to rock music education showcase and will accommodate a multitude of concerts and music related activities.
The unique building will also serve as the main entrance to the rest of the museum complex. This ambitious design doubled the size of the museum allowing for an even greater expansion of the art inside of the daring aesthetic exterior. The complex geometrical design of the building consists of titanium shingles that cover the sloping planes of the structure. While the majority of the artwork is within the buildings, there are also significant works of outdoor sculptures. There is also designed a landscaped pedestrian plaza to go along with the Rock Music Museum complex as a whole
MATERIAL PALLETE
The museum clad is proposed to be Titanium cladding. Clad thinness can be greatly reduced even with large plate sizes. Any alloy of titanium or zirconium can be used. Surface quality is very high. Flatness quality is very high. Easier fabrication, improving vessel design and integrity. Larger plate size means fewer welds required for vessel fabrication. Lower fabrication costs.
The Bandra Kurla Complex is a planned commercial complex in the suburbs of the Indian city of Mumbai. According to MMRDA, the complex is the first of a series of "growth centres" created to "arrest further concentration" of offices and commercial activities in South Mumbai. The complex was built on marshy land on the north side of Mahim Creek and is bound by the suburbs of Kurla in the east and Bandra in the west. Santacruz lies to its North. BKC houses a number of commercial buildings . There are approximately 400,000 (4 Lakh) people working in various offices throughout the BKC. Rock music in India began its infancy in Mumbai. The site chosen is present in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. The site in the complex is well connected to all corners of the city. The complex is nested in the heart of the city. Western suburbs are more responsive towards rock music. Rock concerts are also held in BKC. These concerts attract a huge throng from the city and from different parts of the country. Hence, I have chosen the above mentioned site in Bandra Kurla Complex.
Deconstructivism is a development of postmodern architecture that began in the late 1980s. It is influenced by the theory of "Deconstruction", which is a form of semiotic analysis. It is characterized by ideas of fragmentation, an interest in manipulating ideas of a structure's surface or skin, non-rectilinear shapes which serve to distort and dislocate some of the elements of architecture, such as structure and envelope. The finished visual appearance of buildings that exhibit the many deconstructivist "styles" is characterized by a stimulating unpredictability and a controlled chaos. The attempt in deconstructivism throughout is to move architecture away from what its practitioners see as the constricting 'rules' of modernism such as "form follows function," "purity of form," and "truth to materials.
The seeds of Mumbai rock were sown back in the early 1960s. Bell-bottomed, hair-waxed, cleanshaven boys and girls would tell their parents they were headed out for overnight study group meetings and make their way to The Venice at Hotel Astoria near Churchgate to watch 'beat' bands like The Savages, The Trojans and The Jets perform covers of groups like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Ventures. Right up to the late 1990s, Indian rock was all about the covers. Bands that did perform original material sounded like budget versions of the bands they previously tried to cover. While this had much to do with the availability of recorded music in stores and via radio and TV, it also stemmed from the fact that bands were performing to essentially a stagnant audience. The same kids who'd check out bands at I-Rock would be at college festival gigs; the only other source of live rock in Mumbai -- the club-rock scene -- had, for all practical purposes, gone up in smoke. These extended growing pains of Mumbai rock into the late 1990s were reflective of the Indian scene in general -- a dated subculture struggling to be taken seriously. Essentially, Indian rock was finding it hard to reach out to newer audiences, those that didn't know it existed. It languished in the same way that independent film culture and graffiti art did, without support from the mainstream.

DESIGN EVOLUTION
SITE FORCES
There are various Site forces that come into play and become a necessary consideration for designing. Such as, Sunpath, Site Location (commercial sector of the city), type of users, surrounding building masses, Roads, traffic junctions.
AUDITORIUM
CAF MUSEUM
CONCERT AREA
The main axis of designing this proposal is along the Music street, which is a periodically changing canvas of events around the City, portraying music festivals, activities, open exhibitions etc, where its weaves to be an interesting Public space for all visitors. All in all it becomes a holistic entity for Music, Entertainment, and Learning for people also giving support to the commercial sector of Music production.
FUNCTIONAL ZONING
The zoning of the site is done along two major axis. The Museum being the focal design feature is centered to emphasize the promotion of Rock music, its history. its culture and learning. This building expresses architectural modernism and an edgy, rebellious, extrovert nature of this music genre. The other functions support this very promotion, along with encouraging activities related to the Rock music culture.
