Doggie Dip at Cool Waters for Labor Day

Cool Waterslocated at 2028 S. 124 St. in West Alliscloses for the human swimming season on Labor Day, but before it is drained for the year, it will reopen at 6:30 p.m. for the 9th Annual Doggie Dip. Dogs of all abilities, breeds, and sizes are welcome to come for a swim in the pool. The event, cosponsored by Residents for Off-Leash Milwaukee Parks and the Milwaukee County Parks, will run 6:30 to 8 p.m., Monday, Sept. 2. Due to the popularity of the Doggie Dips, advance-admission wrist bands will be on sale the day before the event, Sunday, Sept. 1, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The wristband will allow the patron and dog to enter the pool without waiting in the admissions line. Admission is $5 per dog. A special on the 2013 Dog Exercise Area permits will be available. For one dog, regardless of the patrons residency, the special price is $10. HARLEY-DAVIDSON CELEBRATION
Special events planned for Harley-Davidson anniversary
A celebration 110 years in the making will be held in Milwaukee from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, as devoted Harley-Davidson owners from across the world will hit the road and converge on Milwaukee for several days of music, factory tours and displays about the companys history. With a theme of "110 Years of Freedom," the Harley-Davidson anniversary will feature 60 bands over three days on five stages on the Summerfest grounds over three days. Tours of the company's facilities will also be offered. The following is a sampling of events and activities during the celebration. party will be held at the Summerfest grounds from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 29. A 110th celebration ticket and H.O.G. membership card is required for admission.

STREET PARTY
A street party will be held from 4-11:30 p.m. Aug. 30 on North Avenue from Prospect to Oakland avenues. The party moves to Milwaukee Street between Wisconsin Avenue and Mason Street from 3-11:30 p.m. the next day. The final street party will be held from 2-11:30 p.m. Sept. 1 on Juneau Avenue from Edison to Water streets.

Seeing the history: Museum documents companys history
"Serial Number One" is the vehicle closest to the very beginning of HarleyDavidson. It is the model that is at the start of a tour of the Harley-Davidson Museum, which is located at 400 W. Canal Street in Milwaukee. The museum is regularly open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day and until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. There will be special hours during the company's 110th anniversary, as the museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 29-31. According to information with the display, a 1996 restoration of the Serial Number One Cycle revealed that several components had been stamped with the serial number "1" indicating that they were among the first parts created for the first Harley-Davidson cycles. The cycle is described as a "touchstone" in company lore. Serial Number One is at the starting point of a company that was started by friends Bill Harley and Arthur Davidson, along with Bills brothers Walter and William Davidson. The museum has cycles from each decade on display, along with artifacts from dealers and competitions. Along the way, visitors can learn when Harley-Davidson signatures such as the low frame and teardrop gas tanks were first implemented. The museum also shows how the company changed as America changed. Cycles used by police and the US Post Office are on display, as are cycles that were developed for use by the Army during World War II. Signs of dealers and from the past 110 years and advertisements fill the walls of the museum. A section of the museum is set aside for how Harley-Davidson cycles became part of America's popular culture. Replicas of the cycles driven in the 1969 movie "Easy Rider" are on display, as are movie posters and album covers featuring Harley-Davidson cycles. AAA: 34.1 million traveling for Labor Day

AAA Travel projects 34.1 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the upcoming Labor Day holiday, a 4.2 percent increase from the 32.7 million people who traveled last year. The anticipated increase in holiday travel is predominantly due to increased consumer spending and the improving housing market. The total number of 2013 Labor Day holiday travelers is expected to reach a new post-recession high. The Labor Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, Aug. 29 to Monday, Sept. 2. AAA is forecasting a lift in Labor Day travel this year due to the increasingly positive economic outlook and optimism in the housing market, said AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet. For many Americans, their home is also their biggest asset. As home prices improve in many parts of the country more families are feeling comfortable about traveling this Labor Day holiday. In Wisconsin, the forecast is for 713,000 travelers to hit the road for the last of the summer holidays. It would be a 3.4 percent increase from a year ago and it would also mark the busiest Labor Day since 2008. AAA expects 637,719 Wisconsinites to travel by automobile and 26,334 by plane with the remaining travelers choosing other modes of transportation. Highlights from 2013 AAA Labor Day Holiday Travel Forecast include: Labor Day holiday travelers to total 34.1 million, an increase of 4.2 percent from the 32.7 million who traveled last year. Eighty-five percent of travelers (29.2 million) to travel by automobile, an increase of 4.3 percent from 28 million last year. Holiday air travel is expected to increase nearly three percent to 2.61 million. The largest share of travelers (46 percent) will depart on Friday, Aug. 30 and Monday, Sept. 2, is the most popular date of return for holiday trips with 43 percent planning to return that day. The average traveler is expected to travel a round-trip distance of 594 miles and spend $804. As schools across the nation usher in their next session of students, the Labor Day holiday provides families with the opportunity for one final extended summer weekend getaway, continued Darbelnet. AAA reminds drivers that safety should remain top of mind. It is important to remain distraction-free and keep their mind on the task of driving.
